The Pittsburgh Pirates have thrilled their fans for more than 120 years. Beginning as the Allegheny's, the Pirates boast 35 hall of famers, five world champions, nine National League pennants, and nine division titles. Treasured memories, from Honus Wagner's all-around excellence and Mazeroski's remarkable 1960 World Series blast to Roberto Clemente's grace on and off the field, are captured in this book.
David Finoli's history of the Pittsburgh Pirates in this 2006 book while needing an update is actually a decent abbreviated history of this franchise whose history dates back to 1881 and over the years has brought, we the fans moments of great joy & a 20 year losing streak that tested us all. The book out of the "Images of Baseball" series takes a decade by decade look at the franchise throughout the 20th century highlighting the highs and lows of the team as well as picking a team of the decade which is a nice touch as well. What this reader also appreciated was the refences to the Homestead Grays & Pittsburgh Crawfords which gave the city 3 teams to root for during the heyday of Negro League baseball. As one who grew up as a fan of the Pirates, this book is a nice souvenir to have on the franchise and is one anyone with an interesting in this team or baseball in general will enjoy.
Given to me as a gift, I actually read this in about 2 hours. It is much less a biographical depiction of the team’s history as it is a photo montage with captions. I also found a few errors, as well as a bit of a poor job describing a few photos.
I did enjoy going through it as we are all missing baseball due to the COVI-19 outbreak. Hopefully, some good history is still to be written by the Pirates in the upcoming years.
