NEW ENTRY IN THE MONSTER HUNTER MEMOIRS Chloe Mendoza and her team from Monster Hunter International must seek out and destroy an ancient evil threatening Los Angeles at the height of Disco Fever.
Los the 1970s.
Disco is king and the nightclubs are full of young, beautiful people with Saturday night fever. From the Sunset Strip to Hollywood Boulevard, a new era is dawning. But below the glitz and glamor, a darkness lurks.
Chloe Mendoza knows darkness. She is a nagualii, a half-demon created by the gods of Central and South America, a daughter of the Court of Feathers, a group of demigods who ruled Mesoamerica before the Spanish arrived.
Now, she is a member of Monster Hunter International’s latest team, based in the L.A. Basin. Business is good in the City of Angels, but soon Chloe gets a message from the Court of Feathers, warning her of a Dark Master who is building up its power in the region. Whatever it is, it brings death and carnage with it.
Time to boogie.

Larry Correia (born 1977) is the New York Times bestselling author of the Monster Hunter International series, the Grimnoir Chronicles, and the thriller Dead Six.
As this book has not come out yet I'm rating it on 2 factors. 1 the rest of the series is superb & 2nd I figured if some jackass can give it a 1 star for nothing I'll do the same but in support. Fix this shit.
There are idiots on here giving one-star reviews to a book that Larry and Jason HAVEN’T FINISHED WRITING YET. So I’m voting five stars to restore some balance.
As outlined in the Goodreads Review Guidelines, pre-publication reviews are allowed. So even though the manuscript isn't even finished yet, I just have to say this is an awesome addition to the Monster Hunter series and a "must buy" for anyone that likes to be entertained.
Jason Cordova and Larry Correia have written a masterful take on Disco and the Supernatural in 1970s LA. Do you want great plotting? Do you want heroic characters? Do you like nostalgia? Do you want a fun read? THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! Buy it when it's actually published and ignore the one star reviews on GoodReads. That's just sour grapes because they can't write a book a great as this one!
I had been looking for something to read between round trips killing baby Hitler and then unkilling him due to the ripples I inadvertently caused in the space time continuum. Boredom often settles in, as it does on long trips, especially when you're treading the same old ground.
There's only so much dingy blue-grey interior of the Circuits of Time that you can watch race past before you're contemplating the choices you made in your life. They really need to hire better switchboard operators. And it's not like we all have a Mr. Fusion instantaneously generating atomic energy out of nowhere. That folks is fiction. There's the charging. And the waiting. And the charging. Bending the laws of the space time continuum is an energy hog. And with that-comes a lot of downtime.
So I happened over to the time terminal to see what they had. MHM: Fever's cover caught my eye. Looked like a lot of fun punching and kicking with monsters. And boy, was it!
But I wasn't expecting to find characters I love, villains I loved to hate, and modern twists on classic fairytale creatures that are both poignant and hilarious.
I can't wait for the next book!
So I won't.
I'm postponing my followup trip to the Triassic and firing up the Flux Capacitor, setting the time to 2024, and the space to Middle of Nowhere, Utah (remember kids, time AND space. That's a mistake you only make once. Trust me). You suckers, here in the present haven't even read MHM #4 yet, and I'm already enroute to MHM#5. Look, I know, I know, there are higher priority tasks. Introducing COVID-19 to a family of Triceratops wasn't my finest moment. But it's not like they're going anywhere. I can fix that anytime I like. I mean, after charging. And the trip. And the hours spent staring at the inside of dreary... well, you get it. That's what the book is for.
Larry crafts excellent, engaging stories and since Goodreads has seen fit to allow reviews for A BOOK THAT HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED, I'm adding my anticipated review for balance. 2023-04-08 Alberta, Canada
What a fun book! I've been enjoying the Monster Hunter Books with International and Vendetta, but I wanted a shorter read in the series next, and this book is significantly shorter than the early Monster Hunter Books. And I asked the co-author on this book (Jason Cordova) if I could read this without reading any more in the series, and he said yes.
I'm so glad I did, because I loved this book!
First of all, this is a very tightly plotted book. I don't think there was any fluff to it whatsover, and I wouldn't advise cutting anything at all. I also thought the characters were given enough for this entry, while leaving open some possibilities for future entries in the series (and I really hope we get a sequel!)
The action was easy to follow, and the action scenes never felt like they overstayed their welcome. As such, the book breezed through quickly, and I found myself finishing it even faster than I anticipated.
The main character, Chloe Mendoza, is a very compelling character, and is significantly different than the main series' main character Owen Zestava Pitt. Her journey in this book was really well done, having to be both a leader and also reaclimate to American society, as well as face her past with her parentage. And as I said earlier Correia and Cordova left enough room for her character to grow in a sequel.
The side characters were all interesting as well. Handled just right.
The setting of California in the 1970s worked really well here. Not only is it a great change of pace for the series, but it allows for some fun things to happen (night clubs, hollywood movie sets, deserts and mountains and more).
It didn't have a really deep theme behind it that might have bumped it up even more, but really it didn't even need it. It's entertaining enough as is and fits the series MO.
Overall, I loved this book. Definitely my favorite Monster Hunter International Universe book thus far. 9.0 out of 10! Excellently done Larry Correia and Jason Cordova.
This book hasn’t been written yet. Not published, WRITTEN! Yet GoodReads is allowing ratings and reviews under the excuse that people may have access to prerelease copies. No prerelease copies are possible for a book that hasn’t been written.
As this book has been neither written nor published in any capacity so far i had to sadly ressort to time travel inorder to leave a review. Wondering what could possibly draw the ire of so many time travelling review bombers I took my time machine to the 22th century to discover what the fuzz is about.
The Experience has changed my life in unexpected ways. Hhis book undoubtly the greatest work of literature that has ever been created, easily combining high intensity action scenes (i liked the 5 way gunfight while riding prehistoric animals through the time vortex best), superb character drama and and intense plot. Whatsmore its profound examinations of deep philosophical and theological themes have also produced a key religious awakening not just in me but all of future humanity. Especially its skilled unification of deontological and utilitarian ethics (brilliantly encapsulated by the riveting 34 pave conversation the protagonist has with the extradimensional entity appearing as a pink flamingo that is really a metaphor for the universal presence of god in all creation) has sparked a new Religion now as "Hooonism" that will, by the late 21th century, supplant most other forms of forms of religion and political ideology. By the early 22th century the new ethical revolution brought about by hoonism will see solutions to worldhunger, peace in the middle east, a global end of Poverty and voting rights for manatees a implemented by consensus worldwide. It has even gotten people to stop talking in the cinema.
In the end this is the most important book written in he history of mankind and it is therefore up to us to stop the malevolent conspiracy of vile reactionary timetravelling reviewbombers trying to nip the great transformation this book will bring in he bud. Also Meditating over the illustration of the Flamingo on page 2045 opens your head chakra and allows you to shoot lasers out of your eyes so that is nifty.
Super excited to read this when it comes out. I've loved all the others and am sure this one will be amazing! Reviewers who poorly review before a book is finishes are dicks!
Monster Hunter Memoirs: Fever is the fourth book in the 'MONSTER HUNTER MEMOIRS" series which is a spin-off of the main Monster Hunters International series. The memoirs are tales of hunters from earlier times. In this case, the height of the disco era. In this one, after a long absence, Chloe Mendoza decides to return to the ranks of Monster Hunters International. Unknown to everyone but the Shacklefords Chloe is a nahualii, a half-demon created by the gods of Central and South America. She has learned to control her demon half and has gotten a puff exemption so she can hunt monsters. She is assigned to start a new unit in Los Angeles with two experienced hunters and several newbies. She soon learns that hunting werewolves and other monsters will just be the start of her troubles. An evil force of great power is organizing the monsters of L.A. and it will be up to Chloe and her team to stop them. This book is a great addition to this series.
The latest in the Monster Hunter Memoirs pairs Larry with another co-author for a story set in the 70's featuring an MHI team.
Enjoyed it more than the previous Memoirs books, mainly because the featured character is not a douche-canoe. A new character, returns to MHI after 30+ years and is assigned to a new squad. She's a half supernatural creature, and that brings issues of its own.
Apparently Goodreads allows reviews prior to the book being finished and sent to the publisher. Fortunately I’m insured by Tom Stranger and he got me a copy from an alternate Earth. As always it’s a great read. Larry and Jason did excellent work on this one.
Wow! What a ride! This was a great story from start to well, not sure I can say end. Hope we GET more about Chloe and her team members and learn more about Pandora.
As Goodreads is allowing prepublication reviews, and even though the manuscript is not yet finished, I figured I'd come drop my two cents. All of the Monster Hunter books, and the associated Memoirs have been a great deal of fun. Even my teens love them. So I am looking forward to this new book. I will update my review when I finally get to read the book.
I wasn't sure how I felt about Correia allowing other authors into his universe, especially after Ringo's trilogy - with its Mary Sue MC and ridiculous levels of sexism (he says, as a decent human being rather than a woketard). I still think Correia felt forced into allowing that one because of the clout behind Ringo's name. But this was a much better and more natural feeling addition to the universe.
I like Chloe as an MC and look forward to the next book. It was also fun to see some other favorites.
Solid narration, though I miss Wyman. Ichore ≠ Ick-or
A story in the Monster Hunter universe that follows a team from the 70s. It's not quite on par with the OG Monster Hunter stories, but it's not bad either. I like that it introduces many more types of strange monsters and less well-known mythologies.
This book is now released, so let the ACTUAL reviews begin!
Monster Hunter Memoirs: Fever is the first book in a new collaboration between Larry Correia and Jason Cordova. The first three in the MHI: Memoirs series were in collaboration between Larry and John Ringo, hatched in one of those legendary John Ringo moments ("Hey, Larry, I really like your Monster Hunter universe. I wrote a sidequest trilogy in it last weekend. Interested in a collaboration?")
Fever is set in a different decade from that trilogy, and follows a new character: Chloe Mendoza, a PUFF-exempt half-nagualii monster hunter who is...older than she looks (early twenties). When we meet her, she's working with a Mossad strike team, taking down a demon summoned to take down Anwar Sadat (which helps set the timeline). Things are going badly until she lets out her nagualii side...when things go very badly, and not just for the demon. Soon Chloe's on a plane to the US for a new job; the action soon moves to 1970s Los Angeles where the fan gets pooped up in earnest. But to say too much more would be spoilery. I will say we meet some characters from the main Monster Hunter storyline, including Earl Harbinger and...someone from the MCB.
There's a good mix of Aztec, Maya and Olmec mythology, some disco-era Angeleno nostalgia for this expat who grew up in that time and place, and the usual blend of action and humor that make the MHI universe worth revisiting - whether Larry Correia is writing in his main epic, or his guests such as Ringo, Sara Hoyt, the many who contributed to Monster Hunter Files, and now Jason Cordova have added their own voices to.
A side note.
It's frustrating that Goodreads permits "reviews" of books long before their actual release, with no verification of actual contact with the books (some haven't even been written yet - just an author announcing, 'next book will be tentatively titled X' - enough for a placeholder, and thus "reviews").
Naturally, fans will say "I love author Y so book Z will surely be uhmaaaaaazing!" but there's also that brand of author or topic deemed controversial for whatever combination of reasons, some of which have nothing to do with the quality of the specific book. You know, *the thing you're supposed to be reviewing AFTER you've read the darn thing*. Larry Correia is one such author: hated by many, beloved by many, and thus the target of one star/five star "just because it's Larry, I don't need to read the book to have an opinion" (p)reviews.
I don't check reviews to see whether an author is popular, a saint, or a jerk; I check reviews to see whether a given book is worth reading. Goodreads is significantly less helpful when it enables this nonsense.
I wasn't a big fan of this book. It was slow and lacked the diversity of character and sass of the other books in this series. The narrator had very little range on distinct voices and I wonder if she listened to the other books in the series.
So, this is nothing special. I've loved all the previous monster books by LC. But this is just "off." Like it was written by AI, after it was fed the other monster books. There's no life in it. It's someone pretending to write a monster book. I forced myself to finish it, and it's not long. We advised.
Another fantastic entry into the world of Monster Hunter International.
The memoirs are tales of hunters from earlier times. In this case, the height of the disco era.
Chad was a chosen one, Owen is a chosen one, Chloe is something else. Her unusual heritage makes her uniquely qualified to be a hunter.
This comes at hunting from a completely different direction and it is great. Chloe is already one of my favorite characters. Join her and her new team as they set out to stop, what else, great earth shattering evil of course.
Absolutely any fan of MHI should read this book! And if you are unfamiliar with the setting you have an entire world of heart pounding adventure awaiting. If this is the case, honestly, I suggest starting with Monster Hunter International. That is the first book of the series. Then after a few of the original series, circle back to the Memoirs. I feel you will have a better experience that way.
This is a great book, it visits a culture mostly overlooked in fiction I feel. It is wall to wall heart pounding action.
Give it a try. I don't think you will be disappointed.
I needed a Monster Hunter fix, and this fit the bill nicely. I found some of the technological references a bit heavy handed, but then, I'm old, so maybe I just resented that I remembered many of them.
Chloe is a decent protagonist, and I see some good potential for at least one more book.
This new MHI novel is a Memoirs story, meaning it's (1) not taking place in the current time period of the main novels, and (2) a collaboration between Larry Correia and another novelist, in this case, Jason Cordova of the well-known Four Horsemen Space Mercenaries shared universe. This is an exciting read, well-paced, with fully formed characters, an intriguing, action-filled plot, and plenty of monsters. I'm looking forward to more stories in this memoir, as it is planned as a possible trilogy.
I really appreciate the research that goes into these books so that I don't end up reading just another European monster story. The authors work on giving us a glimpse into the mythologies of many cultures.
The only problem is that now I have to wait for the next one.
Read every last Monster Hunter book you find. They are all awesome. I better not have to wait years for another book because I live this series and want more!!!!
Terrific new central character, clear plot, and tight pacing. Supporting newbie cast is fun, Larry Correia's established characters don't overly intrude, and they don't save the day.
