Gull Rock is the first in a series of thrilling crime novels. It's set in Cornwall and the author is able to pain an extremely vivid picture of the area from his opening chapter and this continues to develop throughout making the scene just as important at the characters which is an effect I particularly enjoyed. A quick read, I got through it in a few sessions and found myself not wanting to put it down at times. The characters were well rounded and believable and as the plot thickens it becomes even more difficult to leave the story. There is scope for further plot development and the same with the characters but as the first in a series this is something that can be dealt with in further installments. My only problem with this novel is that I found the dialogue a little lacking at times, some of the conversations just didn't flow naturally which detracted from the generally strong characterisation. This author clearly has a gift for creating fascinating and believable scenes, setting a fantastic environment for his tale and this is matched by the strength of plot and the ending leaves enough wanting to make reading the next novel certainly seem worthwhile.
A fan of Gull Rock and Trebarwith Strand in Cornwall, the title of this book and the cover stood out immediately for me. Beginning it, I wondered whether the author could do the location he had chosen to set the story of fugitive Dan Lawrie in justice - he did. In fact, for me, the location is the star of the show - the rugged coastline of this unique and beautiful area described in perfect detail. As for the story - Dan on the run from the police, who are drawing closer and closer ever day is a good one - with some unique twists en-route. The characters are believable and, in the most part, likeable. Dan, we know, despite being on the run, is a good guy and, as the net closes round him, mainly because he stays to long in one place thanks to love interest Sophie, we find ourselves rooting for him with the turning of each page. Part of a trilogy, the chase doesn't end in Cornwall but continues across the UK - I look forward to finding out how Dan fares.
