Once upon a time, there was a beautiful kingdom, with a cursed princess.
The curse could only be broken with the princess’s true love.
Of course. Cue excessive eye rolling.
My kingdom has been cursed for eight years now, trapped within a magical border, with no contact from anyone outside of Sweet Briar. The stagnation is affecting our crops and cattle. We are reaching a breaking point in this curse. Lords from each of my villages have presented a new edict, the True Love Edict. Up to ten men will come live in the castle with me, in hopes of discovering who my true love is. I’ve grown quite accustomed to being alone and am perfectly happy to continue that. My people need me to break the curse, though. Here’s to hoping my true love shows up soon.
Curses and Thunder is a medieval fantasy romance. Content includes adult situations, SA, infertility, violence, alcohol, and language. Curses is suited for people who are 18+. This book contains a cliffhanger and is the first book in a series. Curses and Thunder is not a stand-alone.
The characters were one dimensional, there were quite a few grammatical errors, and the plot was weirdly convoluted and horribly explained. I think the author thought she was doing complex world building, but it just felt like everything was out of order then given in huge info dumps. It’s also a LOT of gratuitous “romance” scenes (like bordering on too many, even for fantasy romance) that often didn’t make any sense for the narrative or the characters.
Given, it was also free on kindle, so my expectations were low and the book met those expectations! If you want an easy read, a straightforward love story, and a tiny bit of atmosphere, then this is a perfectly adequate read.
I had no idea what I was getting into when deciding to read this book and I'm really glad I gave it a chance. I immediately was drawn to the simple yet whimsical cover. The story begins exploring the journey of Jasmin (FMC), a princess, who needs to find her true love to break the curse surrounding her kingdom. I was really enjoying the lighter fantasy side of the story, but the further I read, a more twisted and complicated story began to unravel. An emotional past threatened to burst through. I read this book in almost one complete sitting. I love the unique quirks and qualities of the characters as well as the not so wonderful characters. As I neared the end of the book, I knew I was going to be left with unanswered questions, but I loved it either way. Now to impatiently wait for book two. Highly recommend this book for fantasy lovers who want a twist plot, romance, banter, and mild-moderate spice. If you don't want any of that, at least read for the adorable dog Finn.
Content includes explicit adult situations, SA, infertility, violence, alcohol, and language. Curses is suited for people who are 18+.
I enjoyed the story, but, tons of parts frustrated me and sucked
Good book, not great. So many moments were so frustrating. There are lots of typos and the ending absolutely sucks. There are so many moments built up, that absolutely let me down. Spoiler alert: once Clem and Jasmin find out they are fated, the scene where they both realize it was a total let down. All the attempts at jokes were never actually funny. The sex scenes weren’t hot to me, more uncomfortable and forced than anything. There were moments where I really was enjoying the story, and then total moments of let down - like the ending. Dahlia disrupting the ceremony at the last second? So annoying. Dumb. & We still don’t know who cursed her? Also dumb.
2.5/5- The bricks were there, but there was no cement and no bricklayer. there were holes, big ones. the spicy scenes were too much. the characters were bland. the prose was mostly five word, choppy sentences. Very basic, fantasy romance. no interest in continuing.
I finished this the other night and needed to share!
April does it again, pouring their heart and soul into this book. I was sucked in from chapter 1. Fantasy is not my usual go to, but I dont discriminate and if it's from one of my favorite authors I can't and won't say no.
Ya'll, this book sucks you in from the beginning. It has the spice, humor, and loveable (and not so loveable) characters that I love in a book! There is a perfect mix of spice and story, some twists that are unexpected, some that are expected, strong FMC, and a cliffhanger that has me wanting more.
I cant for the second book to be released. I need to know what happens! #sweetbriarseriesagaisford
Their other book Roomates is worth the read too! This was one of my top 10 books I read last year 💕 Check them out!
For the love of everything that is good and holy…Do. Not. Read. This. Book. Thankfully, I got it for free on Stuff Your Kindle Day, so I only wasted time on it. Don’t listen to the reviews that say “oh wow such unique character quirks.” No, that’s just ASTOUNDING emotional immaturity. And the writing style? Hoooooly cowwwwwww was it bad. It felt reminiscent to when my 14-year-old self tried to write a novel just for fun; the choppy simple sentences, the odd choice of words, and the nearly total lack of world/character building. Um and also? The premise of it is for Jasmin to find her true love and break the curse, but when she is listing the characteristics of the men she likes, she always adds “most importantly, how good are they at sex?” Yikes. Don’t read this.
Jasmin is a princess who needs to find her one true love to break the curse that is killing her kingdom. To do this, up to ten men from the villages surrounding her castle will come to stay with her. Hopefully one of them is her true love and can break the curse before it’s too late. What follows is a great read that has some spice, some twists and will leave you wanting more! It does have some sexually explicit content and would recommend for 18+.
Great fantastic read! I knew right away this book was straight up my alley and I loved every freaking bit of it. It has everything you need in a great story. Playful banter, strong and realistic main characters, diverse character dynamics, awesome humor, a good dose of "involved" scenes (steamy), and fantastic details and original story concept. I actually considered immediately rereading it as soon as I finished this book.
I got this book for free. I don’t know what to say other than I’m happy I finished it, the only thing that kept me going was my completionism. While the idea of kind of like the fantasy version of the bachelorette is really new and intriguing, the execution was lacking quite a lot. For me the entirety of this story felt like “women written by men” especially the spicy scenes.

This book was beautiful, and well written. I loved the way she found her true love and darker story behind this. It's funny, good banter, amazing spice and such an awesome store
