Collected Works Tomie Part 2 Basement Painter Murder (Assassin) Hair Orphan Girl (Adopted Daughter)
Tomie returns in a collection of stories even more shocking and unsettling than the first. In this volume, a surgeon implants part of Tomie's regenerating anatomy into a young patient, with macabre results. In "Painter," Tomie becomes the object of competition between struggling artists looking for the perfect muse. Their art suffers, among other things. "Murder" is a (relatively) whimsical story of a hapless young man who must house a particularly demanding piece of Tomie while she is regrowing. "Half" examines the insecurities and societal pressures placed upon teenage gids, as two school chums go to great lengths to obtain Tomie's vibrant glossy sheen. WARNING: Tomie is not recommended for those with delicate constitutions of weak stomachs.
Junji Itō (Japanese: 伊藤潤二, Ito Junji) is a Japanese cartoonist and illustrator, best known for his horror manga. Ito was born in Gifu Prefecture, Japan in 1963. He was inspired to make art from a young age by his older sister's drawing and Kazuo Umezu's horror comics. Until the early 1990s he worked as a dental technician, while making comics as a side job. By the time he turned into a full time mangaka, Ito was already an acclaimed horror artists. His comics are celebrated for their finely depicted body horrors, while also retaining some elements of psychological horror and erotism. Although he mostly produces short stories, Ito is best known for his longer comic series: Tomie (1987-2000), about a beautiful high school girl who inspires her admirers to commit atrocities; Uzumaki (1998-1999), set in a town cursed with spiral patterns; Gyo (2001-2002), featuring a horde of metal-legged undead fishes. Tomie and Uzumaki in particular have been adapted multiple times in live-action and animation.
Asuka might not kill you, But Tomie definitely will. Holy fucking freaking everything, such a simple idea, such freakish art, and it will keep producing as long as Tomie is regenerating from her cut to pieces body!
Isn't it the duty of a beautiful person to leave a record of themselves in their prime?
Tomie is nothing if not humble, gotta admire that girl!
Something new or maybe not? In This volume, That i didn't notice before or forgot about! Tomie regenerating from different pieces of her body, hates all her other selves, and wants them dead, and guess what they want her Dead too! The Only way to kill Tomie is by burning her, So they specifically ask men they hypnotize, by their weird curse, into going after the others and Burn Them!
I had this open since the end of May! Forgetting about it and getting side tracked, is a me issue, not an issue about this manga, i am just bad at staying in focus when it's short stories, that are not tied to each other, except by the main character, that's why i will probably never watch a tv show like supernatural, or House MD, or Buffy! Give me a big story with a beginning a middle and an end, i am your guy, i will forever be interested, give me bits and pieces of a story in the middle of different cases or whatever is making you dish out 24 episodes each year for 10 years, i am running the other way!
Short stories and Poetry and essays or articles books, have always been like this for me, i just can't stay focused, when i have already finished a story, and now can go explore and get distracted by something else that just ties me to it, with continuity!
Well, this volume was definitely better than the first one. I can see the Junji Ito I love, his beautiful women and interesting characters! Still not one of my favourite works, but very interesting.
I just think that this series is not as scary as his other works.
But I am glad I'm doing this re-reading marathon because I appreciated this volume more the second time round.
Some beautiful portraits, and some creepy turns. Nice!
Here's my problem, I get it. Junji Ito is the new sensation and everything, he's awesome, his artwork is great (mostly) and his stories from what I've read so far are mostly good, with amazing ideas but the execution is what I have a problem with.
See, there's a main theme in his stories and there are episodes of sorts of each chapter after chapter that something happens to someone you don't care in the slightest and it's pretty much insignificant to the main story most of the time but it happens so you can see some creepy dismemberment or something like that.
There's no character development and that's just what hurts me the most. The characters' reactions and choices are mostly dumb as fuck without reason or logic and that also hurts my intelligence.
Other than that it's fun to read and you for sure want to see what happens next and at the end but it was a chore to read some of the stories and that takes it down a star, sadly.
this part was heavier on the horror elements which is great but I am a little bit disappointed that I didn't get an explanation of where Tomie first came to be what she is.
Far better than the first volume, all of the stories in this collection happen to be strong and inspired at equal measures. Ito can be scarier than this of course, though I might be a bit desensitized at this point.
I think this volume was creepier than the last one, still not scary though. I am still wondering how Tomie came to be. Hope, the third volume will reveal that.
Tomie is a lovecraftian monstrosity trapped in the body of a stunningly beautiful girl. She can seduce nearly any man with nothing but a single glance, driving them mad with lust and envy until eventually pushing them to commit brutal murders. Though strangely enough, the victim of the murders are almost always Tomie herself. Countless men and women have fallen victim to Tomie's supernatural charms and Tomie herself has fallen victim to hundreds of atrocities as a result, but soon the world begins to realize that no matter how many times they kill Tomie, the world will never be free of her cruelty. She keeps coming back.
The story begins with Tomie seducing her teacher and a group of male students. They go insane with rage and lust, brutally dismembering her corpse, scattering her by a river all while fighting amongst each other like a flock of savages. Tomie’s streak of seducing victims with her demonic charm finally comes to an end, until she shows up to school the very next day to continue driving everyone insane. It turns out that chopping up Tomie didn’t kill her, it only allowed her to divide, spread and conquer like an army of humanoid cancer cells.
The book is a series of stand-alone stories revolving around the many replicas of Tomie. Each story gives us a way of seeing different sides of the same monstrous girl. She appears as the daughter of a mourning elderly couple, the narcissistic model for a wannabe millionaire painter, a perverted child seducer, a medical experiment gone wrong, we see many faces of Tomie and we’re never truly certain on which face is the real her. She’s like every mythological seductress all rolled into one. She’s a siren, succubus, lamia, Lilith, medusa and every other deadly seductress you can possibly think of. On top of this there’s Ito’s signature grotesque body horror to go along with each version of the wicked maiden.
Tomie is an enigma. If you slice her open, she heals right back up. If you cut her into a hundred pieces, each piece will regenerate and take on its own form and personality. At first we see her as a victim because of how brutally she's murdered by a teacher and a group of students, but as we come to learn more about her, it's almost as if she wants to be killed over and over. She's intentionally cruel, manipulative and psychotic, playing the damsel in distress one moment and happily destroying the lives of innocent people the next. She intentionally pushes people beyond their limits, taking a sick pleasure in the chaos she creates as the world goes mad with lust over her beauty. And since she keeps coming back, there's no limits or consequences to the amount of chaos she can conjure up. It's a very interesting take on lovecraftian horror, interweaving folklore from mythological creatures scattered throughout history wrapped up in the body of a seemingly innocent beautiful girl.
Tomie is the first manga Junji Ito ever published, so its age does show a bit at times, especially near the beginning of the story. It was also published over a very long period of time, there’s a massive difference between the first few chapters and the later chapters. If you’re not too impressed with the beginning, the art, quality and storytelling improve significantly over time, so it’s still great for a first published work and gives you a taste of the weirdness and brutality Ito is capable of. I would recommend Uzumaki first if you’re new to Ito, but Tomie is still definitely worth checking out.
Continuing the story in volume 2, Tomie is still indestructible. No one will see the last of Tomie.
I’m so intrigued by this plot, and how people want to be around Tomie, to the point of obsession and murder… and with the illustrations the point is out there.
Sooo this is my first Junji Ito manga and i loved it. This to me, is the equivalent to fairytales but make them bloody, unsettling and well, terrifying. As someone who really values character driven manga/books i really enjoyed this one who lacked that. Not to mention that the art is absolutely gorgeous. Tomie is very conflicting. On one hand i really sympathise with her and what she’s gone through but on the other, whatever possesses her is simultaneously causing more harm than good, and for some strange reason, i love it. The way her vanity is the only attribute that represents her value and how others are determined to honor it, which will eventually cost them their lives. Because there is something about Tomie that either makes you want to kill her or kill yourself. At first i thought that whatever was possessing tomie was possessing them, but no. Tomie’s gaslighting and victim mentality pushes them over the edge — or maybe SHE pushes them? Whatever it is, i loved it. She weaponizes victimhood not because she IS a victim — no no it’s because she LOVES the drama. SHE still wants to have the upper hand even if she knows she already does. Tomie isn’t a person, she’s the embodiment of a doomed beautiful parasite who will make sure you rot from inside and out for her own pleasure.
One thing i wish we had more was just a more realistic thinking process. All the characters in these short stories were incredibly naïve, but then again, i feel like they got “blinded” by tomie’s beauty (which is as i said, a parasite)
Chapters 1and 2: What the fuck •_• That was disturbing. And Disgusting. Idk how much power this Tomie thing have.
Chapter 3: Technically, we're just watching her getting Murdered in the same way for different reasons. Her life kinda sucks though.
Chapter 4: Bitch just kill them both. They're fucking with your head.
Chapter 5: Can anyone please stop this bitch!? I'm annoyed.
Chapter 6: That was a good twist 👁👄👁
Okay I really hope that the last volume will provide me all the answers about this Tomie monster because I've read Uzumaki and I'm highly disappointed that we were played to the end and nothing Was revealed.
Fascination with Tomie continues with certain bizarrarie. You wouldn’t want Tomie’s blood in your veins, nor hair on your head no matter how beautiful the strands. Sometimes even artists can’t capture the true essence of Tomie, regardless of how much work. One can never be satisfied. Never mind the fact that girl’s playing with everybody’s head. Especially, the one called, “Orphan Girl.” These two of the elder couple, are they really the villains they were made to be? Hmmm. As always, the artwork of Junji Ito is very good. The stories have spooky moments if not entirely scary. Still, the weirdness counts. Strongly recommended.
What's that one quote? A man's biggest fear is that a woman will laugh at him, but a woman's biggest fear is that a man will kill her. Pretty adept that quote.
The whole lore behind Tomie is super interesting and very Japanese. I think it shows how creepy men can be, but also that a woman's only weapon is her beauty and body which, in my opinion, is a tired trope regardless if it's true or not.
Anyway, Junji Ito's work is mesmerizing and horrifying and beautiful and dark, I love it.
