Secrets: Joan not only knows how to keep them, she hoards information. After all, blurting truths could prolong her life and that’s not something she’s willing to allow.
As a renowned journalist, exposing lies is Wesley’s job, but being honest extends to revealing his own agenda as well. He admits on the application he’s been asked to write a story kicking up any dirt he can on Madam Evangeline’s dating service.
Desires: Joan has a reputation to uphold. Labeled a promiscuous monster, authorities shouldn’t be surprised her offer to finally tell them where the skeletons are comes at a price. One date, one night, one final fling.
Wesley doesn’t need one date, one night, a simple fling. Women eyeball him all the time. He knows some hookup service can’t find him his heart’s desire, a sweetheart to cherish for a long and committed lifespan, but he won’t make it a slam-dunk for them by saying otherwise.
Warning Notice: If secrets stay buried and desire is feared instead of embraced, electricity will flow and not in a good way.
In what could be a highly controversial move, Arlene Webb uses her 1Night Stand story to introduce us to a convicted multiple-murderer, Joan, looking for her one chance to know a man. Of course, Madam Eve, the particularly reclusive yet ever-helpful mistress of the agency grants this wish, and finds the one man that will unlock the secrets buried within Joan’s head.
Wesley is a journalist, and spent the entirety of Joan’s trial marveling at the composure, beauty and moral depravity of the teenager on trial. He had written to Madame Eve with a goal to exposing her operation and perhaps winning a Pulitzer in the bargain.
What neither expected was the attraction and connection, nor would Wesley sleep at all that night, working to get a stay of Joan’s execution as he unravels the trail of deceptions involved in her story. Far more a psychological story that a wholly sexual romp, Webb manages to create a character that is both vulnerable and empathetic in Joan, even as we are informed of the crimes she is scheduled to die for.
The 1Night Stand series of books are simply premised: no-holds barred sex for one night, with no requirement or expectation of relationship. While this is the premise, the stories often uncover hidden longings and deep emotional connection between the participants, and this book was no exception. Short and quick to read, this story that put a smile on my face as truth, and love won the day.
I received an eBook from the publisher for purpose of honest review for the Jeep Diva. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
What would you ask for if you were being put to death tomorrow and had one last request? Joan Bennett decided to forgo the customary last meal and asked, instead, for an unprecedented conjugal visit.
I can say, without a doubt, this is the most unusual and unexpected story I've ever read. Set twenty years in the future, Joan is a convicted killer on the fast track to the electric chair. She emails the head of a dating service, asking for a hook up of one night before she's put to death. Unknown to her, Wesley Jenkins had been assigned to investigate that same dating service and had placed a similar request. Fireworks explode when the investigative reporter discovers his date is the convicted murderer he'd covered two years prior.
Ms. Webb has a very unusual and sophisticated writing style. I had to read a little slower than I usually do to catch all the details and piece together the story, but once I got used to it, I enjoyed the surprises and turns she took. This particular tale was perfect in the short story format, any longer and it would have lost some of its pizzazz.
I will say the happily ever after was a bit of a stretch, and may have been a little easier to accept in a longer story with more development, but in a fairy tale mindset, it was a satisfying end. If you're looking for a short, unusual love story, Last Request is a fun one to pick up.
This was an amazing story of courage and strength. Joan has done the most extraordinary thing, she is willing to die for the one person she loves and cherishes the most. What everyone believes about Joan is all lies and misconceptions. Wesley is initially taken back by his 1 Night Stand date but he realizes just how innocent Joan is in so many different ways. There is an instant connection between Joan and Wesley, but Joan isn’t willing to risk the life she is saving for any more than one night of passion. The 1 Night Stand series has something for everyone with their novellas. Passion, hot sex, and lives brought together by Madame Evangeline’s 1 Night Stand service.
This is a really quick read like all the 1NightStand series. It has a surprisingly serious topic for a smexy book. I was not sure how I felt about it most of the time. While you get the feeling things are not exactly as they seem, it is still a strange concept for an erotic romance.
It is very well written and keeps you attention, if in a slightly morbid manner. Strangely I was rather weepy through the read, it is that time of the month and I am emotional. This will definitely tug at those heart strings.
Only one steamy scene and it could have been hotter. But given the circumstances, there wasn't much of an option for more than one go around.
Ms Webb is new to me but I am definitely going to look into her backlist. She has loads of potential for stalking, um following!
After reading Arlene Webb's fantastic series of novels featuring the infamous Colors (starting with Splintered Energy), I was a little wary to pick up her 'non-color' stories for fear I might be disappointed. Geez, was I wrong. Loved every moment of it. As always, her characters come alive within the first few words, even Joan although the mystery surrounding her past unravels slowly. Highly recommended.
