Pillar of the Wolves

Rate this book
CONFUSED. DETERMINED. QUEEN.

With my identity in the open, I expect the Blood Pack to despise me.

But… they don't.

They still consider me one of them, but I'm not sure that's where I belong anymore.

The traitor still lives among my guards.

The fight to determine my mate begins.

But my pack's at war and the Tidals are still working against me.

Despite my confusion, my ever-growing attraction and attachment to the Blood Alpha, and the many people determined to either claim me or kill me, I refuse to curl up and hide.

I may not be a shifter, but I'm not powerless anymore… and I'll do whatever it takes to remain the Queen.

Welp this had a hell of an ending 😲

Smooth transition from book 1 to book 2. The action and betrayal of allies picks up dramatically in Pillar of Wolves. We get a clear picture there is someone within Mesa's inner circle who is a betrayer, but when it comes out....it is just killer (literally).

Not a lot of heat in this series, probably a 🔥🔥. The storyline though is wonderful. The originality is a huge plus to this series!

Love me some Tuslan and Mesa! Now in this book Tuslan is coming to terms with the lies... well she did not lie she omitted.... anyways he is dealing with some hard facts. One being he will have to fight hundreds of males that want his mate. Tuslan is about to show everyone why he is called the Blood Alpha.

Loved it, even with the low heat rating.

Happy reading,
DD 🥂

"Wow, that sounds fun," -From Pillar of the Wolves

3 stars

This book starts really slow, picking up from the wonderful cliffhanger of the last book. At first, plot is really mostly dialogue back and forth, mainly banter between out main couple. Instead of creating more character depth for them though, it made him seem more unlikable, possessive, and stereotypical "alpha"; for the genre. I was really looking forward to the desedra, learning more about the castle politics, who the traitor was, and about the other clans. This wasn't really explored. Mesa goes from, "no I can't show favorites"; to being in bed with Tuslan after several possessive food and jewel related conversations. The numerous nicknames for Mesa, especially when they know some of them aren't true get a little tiresome. The pacing picks up at about the midpoint with an anticlimactic reveal of the traitor. It ends with another cliffhanger making you want to grab the next book.

Sadly DNF. What happened here? The first book in this series was so solid, but then this book just kind of went off the rails.

This one entirely tanked for me. The characterization of the FMC was all over the place. In one breathe she's pissed that the MMC even considered putting the queen (not knowing it was her) in a tower. And then later on, she's totally fine that he dropped her in his hoard and left her there. Not to mention she didn't have enough water left with her. And then she has a whole tantrum that MMC isn't giving her all the information, and then a few chapters later proposes not telling him very key information about how the trials are won. She's all about saving her pack, but then seems totally fine just letting them go and do their own thing and we only see her pack on-page a handful of times.

Honestly, I'll probably just read spoilers for the last book and call it good.

YIKES. I really wanted to love this book because Soul of the Pack was such a good and promising start to the series. But my god, there was so much wrong with this book that I couldn't force myself to read another page. It definitely feels like it belongs in the YA genre, with a rudimentary writing style, immature characters and stupid plot. I've been avoiding the genre with a 10-foot pole, but somehow this one slipped through my defences and I was under the impression it'd be NA or adult.

I'm going to put a spoiler warning for here on out, so read at your own discretion:

Unfortunately, I'm going to call it here with this series because I feel like the characters and plot are going to piss me off too much from here on out. Peace out!

4.25 - Another great instalment in the Shifter Queen Series! Pillar of the Wolves takes Mesa back to the Royal Castle, for the rite to pick her Alpha Consort, now that she is ending her transition period. It picks up after the cliffhanger and reveal that things will be changing in book 1. The Human Queen is not the weak and fragile person they thought she was. A traitor needs to be revealed, a mate chosen and the race to save the Human Queen begins.

I still love Tuslan and Mesa and look forward to seeing more from the Blood Pack lead wolves. Once again we end on a huge cliffhanger.

Blood queen

So I found my skimming frequently because of the wishy washy back and fourth of our H and her main man. I felt like the entire book was just to focused on her continuously whining that he wouldn't win " so what was the point of hoping for him to win? It just was so annoying after awhile, I wished for more of a story as to what the old queen did, and not such a rushed ending that happened in this book. I will continue on to the next book

This trilogy is turning out to be really good.

Even though this book a four instead of a five like the first book, it is definitely worth reading. I think part of the problem is that the MC doesn’t 100% believe he can win or at least not let him know she has doubts. He backs her totally and she should too and put her fear on the back burner. I keep picturing Jason Momoa for Tulsan, which makes Tulsan all that more appealing, swoon.

*I received an ARC for an honest review*

Pillar of Wolves picks up right where the last book left off. . This book is non-stop from scene to scene, and it was very difficult to put it down. I will say that Mesa did seem to have a mood shift very quickly in the beginning of the story, however in real life we see similar situations happen as well. I loved watching her relationship with Tuslan flourish and grow over the course of this book. I devoured this book in one sitting, and I can't wait for the next one!

I'm loving this world!! Lola Glass really shines in fantasy. We're still in the midst of the desedra and seeing more of the competition. There's a lot of tension and intrigue in this one too. I liked seeing more of Mesa and Tuslan, as well as the rest of the Blood Pack gang. We learn more about the world and the magic as it goes on.
I liked Tuslan and Mesa's development in this one. They learn how to compromise a bit and what they need from each other. Tuslan gets a little more typical alpha in this one, but I didn't mind. There's a little more tension and build up with them too. I'm really liking their relationship and how they're both fighting for it.
Mesa is really coming into her own in this one, and I loved seeing it. She's showing her strength and not letting people underestimate her.
The ending has me so ready for the next book because wow!! I can't wait for more!!!

Needs to be rated mature

This really needs to be rated for a mature audience due to the language, violence, torture, and sexual content. I like the story, but can’t continue reading it because of the reasons listed above. It honestly made me feel nauseous. It’s unfortunate, because I really do like the basic story and love the main characters. I’ve often wondered why fantasy writers would presume to use foul profanity used on our world in a fantasy world that is supposed to be so different from our own. From my perspective, it’s shows a lack of imagination on the part of the author.

When soon to be Shifter Queen Mesa Royal runs from her home after an attack on her life, she hides in the dreaded Blood pack, lead by the terrifying Alpha Tuslan, in this fantasy romance series.

I read the trilogy back-to-back so I figured I would write a review about the entire series rather than each individual book. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the first two books of the series. Mesa and Tuslan had tons of chemistry, and the circumstances surrounding Mesa's arrival in the Blood kingdom create a perfect amount of tension and secrecy between the two. The second installment of the series continues to build their romance as Mesa's lies unravel in the face of her true identity. While their romance and character development starts strong, it fizzles out in the third book. Their characters both become too powerful and too perfect to create any sort of tension.

If found family is your thing, you might love this series. The Blood Pack members all play a part in creating a fun, found family vibe. In particular, I enjoyed the comradery the girls found with each other. It's always nice to see ladies supporting ladies in these stories. However, the last book introduces some new characters that, quite frankly, never needed to be in the story as they were only used as plot devices.

Probably the biggest let down is the magic system. The first two books were able to gloss over the world building issues, but the last installment requires a certain amount of understanding of the magic system to be interesting or understandable. The worldbuilding was murky at best, particularly the nuances of the magic system and the legend behind the Human Queens. While the ending may have been a let down, I enjoyed most of my time reading this series.

I had reservations going into this one but wanted to give it a chance because the world the author has created is SO unique and cool. Seriously, if there’s one thing I can happily gush about, it’s the world building in this series. It’s awesome!!

But.

BUT. Everything else? Ugh…. It’s not that great, if I’m honest. Mesa is really inconsistent. She goes from acting like she’s super proud to be a human and “squishy” to super duper insecure about being one. And then what is up with her acting horrified about violence and how awful it is? Like, girl, come on. Look at where you live! I just didn’t get her.

Tuslan was boring. Seriously, he was all growl and barely any bite. And don’t get me started on the supposed “love” between him and Mesa. It was lukewarm at best, y’all. Absolutely zero tension.

Speaking of zero tension, let’s discuss the plot. Or, rather, the lack of it. The whole point to this second book (I thought lol) was to go through the desedra and win the competition. It should’ve been filled with political/court intrigue and backstabbing and horrible things to make me fear for the characters, right? LOL is all I have to say about that. The “competition” was a joke and barely had any page time. This book was basically just random events slapped together for bonding purposes for all the characters (side characters aren’t even worth talking about they’re so one-dimensional).

As for the one who betrayed Mesa? Completely anti-climatic. And rushed! I won’t spoil it but I was so disappointed how it was revealed and handled. Just… disappointed.

Ugh. The first book had its issues but was entertaining and unique enough I was willing to overlook them. But with how things went with this second book (seriously, what the hell was that ending???) not even the cool world is enough to convince me to keep going with this series

Overly dramatic Mesa

Mesa was a little over the top with her power trip and it was pretty annoying. She went on and on about packs the fairness of the blood pack and was trying to promote it, then turned around and treated innocents like shit. Also, she was constantly trying to assert dominance over Tuslan by belittling him when he acted on instinct.

Mesa was unreasonably dramatic. Tuslan joined the competition and she went on and on about how they wouldn’t end up together. She also went on and on when she eavesdropped and heard the blood pack saying the human queen was weak. If she would have spoke up, they might have said something different. Her hurt is her own fault. There was no faith and she got mad when she overheard slight uncertainty in Tuslan when he gave her confidence. While they were messing around, she wouldn’t say she was his mate because the competition wasn’t over. Tulsa decided to wait to sleep with her until it was official and she got so mad that she cried. She was so neglected that she wants to take and take without giving back. I’m glad he didn’t give in. What do you want from him?! She needs to make up her mind.

Tuslan was perfect. Haha! So sweet, funny, playful, and sexy. He doesn’t need to change.

While Mesa was annoying, she wasn’t too annoying and I ended up enjoying the story overall.

DNF 35%. This was an incredibly disappointing second installment. All the pieces are there to create an amazing book. Political intrigue, betrayal, awesome shifter stuff, fun magic but the execution just didn't do any justice to the world.

The constant inner monologue Mesa had about her body was terrible. Plus having her squeeze into clothes that did not fit her took up way too much page time. Tuslan continued to be a flat seemingly emotionless character. There was no tension and the whole pack was immediately on board with keeping her even though she was human. It felt too easy. It made all the problems in the first book feel manufactured.

The focus also shifted almost entirely to sexual tension between Mesa and Tuslan and that was not done particularly well. I would have been way more interested in getting more detail about the relationship between Tomo and Keena. I don't imagine that the book will become what I want it to be so I am done with the series and back to my Lola Glass hiatus.

Loved the book but disliked the way it ended

I love this storyline and the characters. You can't help but get attached to everyone and it goes beyond the leads. The story started right after the first book. Here you learn more abt the Queen and her world. What she is supposed to be doing. We see Mesa stepping up and Tulsan's vulnerability. So why the 4 stars? The ending. I think the ending took away from the story. I hated how this ended. For me it was a cross between the cliffhanger and dragging things out a bit. I would have like it better if we ended Tulsan and Mesa's story and moved on to another set of characters. That being said I'm vested and need to know what happens. I would recommend this series though. Fresh take on Shifters with great storytelling. Believable amd nuanced characters that all draw you in. Has some steam to it but it's mixed in there beautifully.

serious cliffhanger!

I would have given this 5⭐️’s, if not for the end.
Too climatic, then, bam, cliffhanger. Yes the next book is written, but still hugely annoying, grrr.

This started sooo well! Loved the way the info was spread out, the way the story was involved and moving right from the beginning.
The way more of the characters started developing.
The world building took a bit of a back step sadly, but was willing to forgive that, in exchange for fun, likeable characters.

The MMC is divine, so strong and gentle, protective and dangerous, thoroughly sexy!

But that ending… too many twists and angsts, all crammed into a couple of chapters, culminating in a dramatic cliffhanger.
Frustrating and disappointing after having gone on the journey, reached the end, and not be rewarded.

Of course, will still read the next. After all, it still got 4⭐️ 😬🥸🥰

Again, decent book and some entertaining storylines.
Mesa's magic is described more - the sections of her helping the pups was too damn adorable.
I appreciated that there wasn't a heavy dose of b.s. of "does he love me or is it the bond?" I appreciated that they were together and showed they were.
The desedra was lame, mostly because there wasn't really an explanation.. other than whoever the music thought could be a mate would lead to Queen Mesa through some invisible maze/barrier.
Ellery was a great addition to the group
When the packs killed Mesa and the barrier fell, even with Tuslan feral he didn't leave her and wanted to protect her. And the interesting way she figured out how to get him to shift to his dragon to take them to the lair.
All the time Tuslan was in the wolf form made me really want a dog. lol.

Starting immediately where the first book in the series left off, Mesa must deal with the fact that Tuslan and the Blood Pack now know exactly who she is and what that means for their relationship. Mesa's upbringing leaves it very hard for her to trust others, but Tuslan, Paik, Alyx, Keena and Tomo soon become a select few that Mesa knows deep inside have her best interests at heart. I loved seeing her embrace her own power and position and make decisions that put her first, even as you can see just how much she truly cares in general for the good of other people. The tension in this book ratchets up a full notch and danger seems to come from all sides. What happens in the final moments... wow. I need book three as soon as possible!!

I think this is my favorite series by Lola. Book 2 was better than book 1. Her style of right is interesting to me especially with how she develops her character. The women in the book are strong and refuse to beg for anything especially from a man.

The writing is very descriptive to where you can visualize the scenes described in the book. Space the plot in the story is well written and mannish throughout the book. The author doesn’t veer off on another topic or cause the reader to get lost in what is supposed to be occurring like some books.
I do recommend for people to read it and they were looking for a book that is based off of shifters favorite mates and strong lead female characters

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW of Pillar of the Wolves, the second book in the Shifter Queen series by Lola Glass. I really love this series! It has a little A Knight's Tale vibe and reads like a throw down saga! Mesa is back in the Royal Capitol dealing with the desedra games going on, the Royal Pack falling apart, assassinations being bandied about, few people to trust and a lot to lose at the outcome of the choosing. Here is a read that was hard to put down what with all the action, adventure, drama, sexy shifters and a human queen in play. This story does not resolve, it sets up for the next book. Definitely worth the read, but must be read in series order.

Evolving plot

Oh for the love of cliff hangers. Not. Good plot. Fresh, new and unique. Character dynamics were solid too. Character growth and development between packs as well as towards one fierce alpha, very good. Ready for a resolution between our main leads and between the packs and between two other fated mates. Gotta say that belly splotch is weird. I like that they wear a mark but I guess a huge round print on your belly is...not jiving with me. I gave 4 stars be cause there are some weak descriptions and metaphors written that are just completely off when considering the whole story. The rest of the story his solid and there are phrases that totally miss the mark. They are either too weak or so random that nothing makes sense.

Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice 🌶️.5
Romance 💘💘💘💘💘
Vibes ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book picks right up where we left off and shows the trials of the desedra (aka husband trials). It doesn't get super detailed on what happens other than describing a few mazes. This sequel focuses on the relationships and then sometimes they have to step out to do the day's trial. Tuslan's commitment and desire for Mesa never wavers despite her unsureness on how he would take the truth of who she actually was. Another quick read but the banter and verbiage used just completely immersed me into the story. A few punctuation errors but not very many. Steam kicks up a bit but not very much. But the romance and tension between our MCs is still climbing! Let's go book 3!

i know covers aren't everything but i would like to request that the author have something less edited looking in her next books because the e-book i read had the cover on every chapter and it's quite jarring to see. too ai looking?

anyways, this was my fav book in the series which is interesting because usually middle books don't get a lot of love. but i loved that tuslin had to compete with others to win mesa and how devoted he is to her. he shares his vulnerabilities (or tries to) but he still remains absolutely fixated on winning mesa and her heart.

finally mesa doesn't have to hide and she can be real with the blood pack, and it doesn't take long for tuslin to win her over. i will say, the author is so good at cliffhanger endings.

Are authors still paid by the line?

I just don't like it when authors decide to take a story that could easily be told in one book and drag it out into three books or more. I really believe that this book could have been condensed and included in the first book.
I kept wondering if the author was paid by the number of words or the number of sentences. Seriously this book could have been condensed and used to introduce a new couple relationship. At least that way once the original characters save the world in the next book the reader would be invested in a new relationship and a new world power structure.
It's a well written book with a story that could have been made better.

After each book in this series I’m dying to get my hands on the next! Book two definitely didn’t disappoint.

We get to see Mesa back in her castle with some of her power back and flaunting her strength. This book is focused on the desedra competition (which will decide who she takes as a mate), but there is a lot of intrigue happening outside the games. As we get to know her former guards we learn more about Mesa’s former life, and see how she wants to change the status quo.

I loved Tuscan so much in this installation! He is so understanding and powerful, and just really sees Mesa for who she is. I loved their relationship and can’t wait to see more of it.
