I loved this book. Just when I thought this series was getting stagnant, the author takes it in a new direction that I found so exciting and interesting when she bonded a bear with a wolf which forces these two hated rivals to work together in order for their respective species to survive.

Definitely one of my favorites in the series but I’m a bit miffed that the introduction of Maxwell to the sloth and the twinning between their pair and Ryan-Philip’s pair wasn’t included. But overall it was good!

2012 Review:
** Maybe somewhat spoilerish. **

I don’t like the wolves. I don’t like their differences. Their shifting. I see how this development makes sense and how it works, but I really don’t like their rules and hierarchy. Rape as a form of maintaining the order? In wolf form, no less. I can’t accept that. They really are more like their animal counterparts than like their human side and that irks me and makes me uneasy. Their entire society is giving me the willies.

It’s strange because this book’s theme clearly rests on the fact that Maxwell broke something, and through this he actually broke something in the entire series. I don’t like it. It broke the alpha/omega pattern, and it broke the sloth to an extent. Specifically, it broke at least one of the predestined pairings (so what about the omega and possibly a beta as well who will never be claimed?) and thus the entire sloth’s purpose. In my opinion, anyway.

The only thing I really like and consider a thing of beauty is the matter of the two nexus (or nexi? XD).

Well, what I am left with is the fact that I really like the sloth’s cohesion when it’s not being messed with, and I love both Danny and Dylan. They’re pivotal figures and each in his own way contributes beautifully and at personal cost to the entire series. Without being a couple, heh.

So yeah. This volume did not fill me with joy, even if I understand its workings and appreciate a certain logic. It also makes me wonder where things will go from here. I suppose that’s a downside of a progressive series: Things change and sometimes this won’t be to everyone’s liking.

So while I get the protagonists’ relationship here, I just don’t feel comfortable with this type of dominance, exhibitionism, and so forth, and it’s not enough that their bond simultaneously is suffused with the bears’ attitude. Oddly, instead of helping matters, that mix just makes it more confusing. I much prefer the bear way of handling matters; sometimes D/s, sometimes so equal that it’s not even clear which one is the alpha and which one the omega in the pairing, but unfailingly devoted, caring, faithful and utterly respectful. Yeah, I guess that’s really the big issue I have with this: respect or lack thereof in the exhibited behaviour.

Oh well.

Not a bad book by any means, just a dip for me in a series I have come to cherish.
