When Russell’s eccentric, storytelling grandpa moves in with the family, Russell loses his bedroom and has to take Grandpa to the carousel in the park every day. As if he doesn’t have enough to deal with already. He’s flunking fifth grade, bullied at school, and his dad’s drinking has made him feel like a failure. Russell dreams of being a firefighter but fears he isn’t courageous enough.
Then Russell rides a carousel horse with Grandpa. Thanks to a magic brass ring, he finds himself magically transported into the past, where he faces life-and-death challenges. Each ride is a new, risky adventure. If he’s not careful, he could be trapped in one of his wild adventures forever!
This is the award-winning first story in the Brass Ring Series.
K. L. Small writes fiction for young readers and the young at heart. A Dress To Remember: A Fairy Tale is her debut middle grade novel. The Magic Carousel is Book 1 of The Brass Ring Series. The Christmas Carousel is Book 2 in the series. In 2024, the third book will be The Haunted Carousel.
This was a fantastic story and I just loved the overall feeling of magic, family, imagination and life lessons. The story is geared from ages 9-12 but truly this story can be enjoyed for the young and the young at heart (like me). I am already eagerly waiting for more in The Brass Ring series. Highly recommend read and just overall wonderful story.
Russell is trying to survive 5th grade so he can make it to middle school. With his grandfather living with the family, an unruly bully on his heels and some family drama....all Russell wants is to grown up and become a firefighter. When a daily outing with his grandfather to the local carousel takes Russell and his grandfather on a magical journey, Russell learns new challenges may make or break from him wanting to become the firefighter he wants one day.
As each journey on the Magic Carousel embarks on just a new adventure for Russell, he will learn not only to be brave when he thinks he cannot but to also make his grandfather happy.
Magical wonderful story........I cannot wait to see where the Magic Carousel takes me next.
I just want a Grandpa with a magical brass ring and I want to go on a carousel 😍
I’m blessed to be a librarian at a local school and my visitors are aged between 6-14 years of age so what kids have to deal with isn’t unknown to me ( I’m also a mum of 3) and I’ve a few that come to visit my place of safety just to escape , read, colour or build puzzle and with all these different little personalities this read became so real to me on many levels as I could see some of my little friends in this stunning read ❣️📚
I just love Russell’s grandpa and I’ve created a picture in my mind of what he looks like and obviously the kids know I’m reading and they want constant updates and what fun it’s like we’re living the story together in between classes and break times ❣️
My heart broke when grandpa took ill but at the same time it was Russell’s time to be bold and brave and this is where he grows and my mommy heart swells with pride but my childlike side is so envious !
I actually want to get a little toy carousel to put in the library and when kids ask I can share this story as inspiration for them ! I just adored this read !
What a great story! I enjoyed all the adventures that Russ goes on with the magical carousel. This is a wonderful story but has a lot of factual information and some learning/growing that takes place. This author has an imagination and I like how she incorporated it into the different horses on the carousel. I myself have often wondered about the history or back story of each horse. That she brought that to life as well as show us how important horses were to our history is just excellent.
This is written for a median age child but I enjoyed it and think it would be a cool book to read to a child and keep an eye out for illustrations of our hero in action. Many discussions could take place after each chapter. I also recommend reading the “Things you might want to know” after reading. It is very interesting and might answer some questions from a child. I especially like the author's thoughts on horses and her cute photo at the back. It rounds out the whole book nicely.
I read this book in one sitting and I imagine many others will as well.
We meet Russell right away. He's in the 5th grade, and well, it's just not his year. So many changes have occurred over the past year that it's really affected his performance in school. Grandpa moved in, resulting in his room to change, his dad starting drinking more, and Tyler became a bully. That's a bit much for a young man to have to take on.
Grandpa loves going to the carousel everyday, much to Russell's chagrin. One day, that all changes for both Rusty and Grandpa though. Things will never be the same again...and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
This book is pretty deep and one that teenagers could likely relate to. There are some intense topics covered and there are ways to help those issues throughout the story. I'll also admit, I cried at the end!!! Have a box of tissues handy if you're soft hearted!!
The Magic Carousel is the unique award-winning first book in this series the Brass Ring. It is an adventure story for tweens between 8 – 12 years old but will capture the heart of anyone. Rusty soon learns there is more to the crazy old man he calls Grandpa, and his adventure begins. Time travel, a brass ring, magical powers, a gateway to magic are what you will find in this magical adventure fantasy. There is fun, heartache, drama, tragedy, bullying and much more. The characters are relatable with the story is told in the first-person. The Magic Carousel is an exciting educational history lesson. It is original and imaginative and an action-packed wild adventure where a young boy Rusty learns true courage and bravery. I wonder what new adventure will come next for Rusty.
Some of the best books are adventure books especially if they are geared toward a tween who can read and go on adventures they otherwise wouldn't have. This book is perfectly written for that age group and can compete with some of my kids' favorites that also involved magic and adventure. In this story, we see a young boy who doesn't have a great home life but encounters a magical carousel that changes everything. Wonderfully written, really engaging for tweens, and an adventure for anybody. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
This book was a very entertaining and interesting read. its about a boy named Russell who wants to be a firefighter when he grows up but doesn’t believe he’s brave enough to do it. with this magic of the carousel and his grandpa’s tales, Russell goes on an adventure he sees different places, learns new skills and in the grand of it all learns to be brave. This book was wonderfully written and was so amazing about how no matter what you can be brave deep down too. I felt like I was swept away with Russell and his adventure. This was a surprisingly amazing and well done.
This historical time traveling book will be loved by kids!! I am an older adult and enjoyed it immensely. Russell is not happy when his grandfather moves in with his family and things begin to change. Add to that a bully and an abusive drunk father and Russell begins failing at school. But, one day his grandfather shares something magical with him and things begin to change. Such an inspirational book!!
Russell is bullied at school, doesn’t have the best home life, and on top of it all, he has to take his grandpa to the park to ride the carousel every afternoon. He makes up his mind that this is the last time to take his grandpa when an amazing adventure begins. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to sharing it with my granddaughter.
OMG OMG OMG! I would like to see this as a movie! I think that this is extremely well-written! I absolutely love the character development and the way Rusty becomes a stronger, happier, and more confident boy because of his adventures. I absolutely want my second grader to read this book because I am truly thrilled about the message of the story!
Loved the idea of this. Read it all in one day, wish it could have been one sitting. An action packed adventure story. Rooted for Rusty all the way through. Well researched imaginative story. Looking forward to more from Rusty.
This was an easy, great read. We meet Russel who is finishing up 5th grade. He is having a tough time this year. Grandpa had to move in and Russel and him go the carousel, one day something magical happens. Cannot wait for the next book.
I would have loved this book as a kid. Horses and time travel, two of my favorite things!
This is a perfect read-aloud for elementary-aged students or older readers. For homeschooling families, this book could serve as a fun stepping-off point for further exploration, particularly for those families who are structuring elementary unit studies around historical novels.
The premise is inventive, with each carousel horse taking Russell on a different, well-researched time travel adventure. Along with the fast-paced adventures, Russell builds character strengths throughout the novel as he struggles with common childhood challenges, and everything resolves on a hopeful note at the end.
The author provides excellent historical notes for each chapter. I learned a few new things myself about historical horses!
The Magic Carousel is Book One in The Brass Ring Series. It is a Kids Fantasy book designed for children ages nine to twelve years of age. This book was very entertaining and would be a good read for anyone that considers themselves to be young at heart. The story centers around the character of Russell who has dreamed of becoming a firefighter when he grows up, but he feels like he will never be brave enough. Ever since his seventh birthday his young life seems to be going downhill and he feels like a failure. Russell is failing fifth grade, his dad is a drunk, his mom works all the time, and he is being bullied by someone who used to be his best friend. When Russell’s grandfather moved in not only did he lose his room but he was moved into the cold, damp, smelly basement.
Now Russell is expected to take his grandfather to the park everyday after school so that his grandfather can ride the carousel. He loves his grandfather and enjoys hearing stories of his wild adventures but is afraid he will be bullied farther if someone sees him at the park. When Russell reluctantly agrees to ride the carousel with his grandfather everything changes, and he realizes that his grandfather’s tall tales are actually true. With the help of a bit of magic he sets off on a series of adventures on the carousel that transport him back in time. During each adventure he sees new places, learns new things, and eventually learns how to be brave.
I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to read more in this series! The storyline was riveting, the settings throughout were spectacular, and the characters were relatable and lovable. I loved watching the transformation of Russell as he grew and learned how to be brave. Through a series of terrifying near-death experiences, he was able to overcome his fears. The horses and secondary characters all played a part in how Russell was able to push through his fears and face them head on. Now I want my own magic carousel so I can be transported through time and go on exciting new adventures. I highly recommend this book!
Adventure. While this isn’t the first book, I have read by the talented K.L. Small this one was very different. Its life, a ten-year-old boy named Russell is in fifth grade, he’s bullied by his old best friend Tyler and thinks he is nothing but a failure in everything he does. Russ dreams of being a firefighter like his Uncle Ethan, but his fears of everything get in the way. In the past year everything has fallen around Russ, his grandma passed away leading to his grandpa moving in with his family. He lost his room to his grandpa, now his room is the unfinished damp basement that smells like dirty socks. All his grades have dropped this year, his father only ever thinks he has done something wrong and tells him he fails. Grandpa always tells amazing stories not fantasy stories but true stories of horses throughout history, he talks about them like they are people and not just an animal that people ride. Everyday after school he must take grandpa to the park to ride the carousel, something he tries to hide from while there because of Tyler and Matt. In a moment of panic after a run in with the bullies he tells his grandpa today is the last time. Grandpa’s only request it to have one more ride. Roscoe, river, bear. Grandpa tells him they were there in 1827 and that it was magic, but then he has a stroke giving Russell his brass ring as he is taken away in the ambulance. Little Bit, mine, explosion. How is it possible? Did grandpa ever take mom for an adventure when she was little? No explanations on how just told magic, then the magic seems to be tugging him back to the carousel everyday making him yearn for another adventure. The world is ours; reality is both the good and the bad. The author’s ability to mix in some magic while not losing the overall story of life is interesting and easy for the age group to understand and hold on to the magic in the world. Heroes are everyday people or in this case animals that accomplished amazing feats throughout time. I truly cannot wait for the next instalment of this new series.
What a cute book!! I got this for my 10 almost 11 year old, but as I read it I really enjoyed it myself! I was captivated by each horse/pony! What little/big girl doesn't love horses?! Poor Russell's' life is been all downs lately in life's' crazy ups and downs. He's not been doing well at school (about failing!), his over the top storytelling grandfather moved in and took his room (plus he has to care for him after school!), he was basically banished to the basement (yelling up and down stairs all the time. ugh!), and he can't seem to do anything right (dad's drinking isn't helping!). Pre-teen life at it's finest! He has big dreams of being a firefighter like his uncle, but he really isn't courageous/brave enough. He can't stand up to school bullies, his grandpa keeps making him go to the park for a baby ride (the carousel), and everyone seems to yell at him for everything. Life sucks. One day after fighting with his grandfather (about that stupid baby carousel), he rides the carousel with him and they're magically sent for a ride!! Shot back into the past where they face a life and death experience, has Russell looking at his grandfather's "crazy" stories closer. Has he really lived all these stories? Different lives almost? Each time he rides a horse, he is brought into that horses' world and he gets to experience their life for a short song. Each ride has it's own obstacles and adventures though, and when Russell looses the magic brass ring (his grandfather gave him) he could be stuck forever!! Can he make it back? Will he learn all the secrets to the ring and the horses? What about the lead horse? Will he find it?? There are so many questions you will find yourself asking throughout this book (I suggest you ask your kids what they think while you read together for more interaction!), but it is so wonderful! I really enjoyed "getting to know" each of the different horses on the carousel and so did my daughter. I can't wait to read more from this author!!

To Sum It Up: ‘A cleverly plotted, fantasy adventure full of twists, turns – and a few life lessons. A RED RIBBON WINNER and highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
A delightful pacy read to captivate young and old.
Russell can never do anything right. Not since his disastrous seventh birthday party. His once best friend now bullies him and he’s failing his grades. His life ambition is to be a fireman, but he knows he’ll never be brave enough, that he’ll mess that up too. To add insult to injury, he’s also expected to take his grandfather to ride the carousel in the park every afternoon, as if Granddad was a little kid. But when Granddad insists one day that Russell rides too, the boy discovers what being brave is really about.
Russell is a sympathetic hero with all the worries of his age, and young readers will relate to him. The author dips him, and the reader, in and out of wonderfully told hair-raising adventures with heartache, drama and near death experiences, which challenge the boy’s courage both physically and mentally. Along the way he learns lessons he can carry through to his own everyday world. The secondary characters play their parts well, especially the horses with their different personalities and circumstances.
The book is also – whisper it – educational, but there’s no bogging things down with turgid history lessons. Russell is thrown into times and situations where he is totally ignorant and has to make things up as he goes along, but the author has cleverly reinforced these subliminal history lessons with an appendix which briefly gives the background.
Highly recommended – after all, I read it in one sitting. (And you kind of have to buy it for that gorgeous cover by Brandon Dorman alone – that horse is coming right at you!)
Embarking on a captivating journey, 'The Magic Carousel' by K.L. Small unfolds a delightful narrative brimming with imaginative adventures featuring Rusty and his beloved grandpa. The narrative skillfully weaves intricate descriptions of each carousel horse, inviting readers into a world where the beauty of these creatures transcends the visible signs of wear and tear, embodying years of joy shared with the young and the old alike.
What sets this enchanting tale apart is Rusty's ability to perceive the intrinsic beauty within each horse, a sentiment echoed by the younger children who share in the wonder of the carousel. The narrative emphasizes the profound connection between Rusty and his grandpa, as they navigate the magical tales embedded within each horse. These stories not only serve as a conduit for Rusty's own adventures but also deepen the bond with his grandpa, who holds him dear.
'The Magic Carousel' is a celebration of the fleeting joys of youth, offering a poignant reminder to appreciate the precious moments and hold loved ones close to our hearts. Beyond the enchanting imagery, the narrative imparts valuable life lessons, making it a heartwarming and insightful read. With its perfect blend of wonderful images, meaningful life lessons, and heartfelt fun, this book stands as a testament to the magic inherent in appreciating both the simplicity and complexity of life's carousel ride. For those seeking a literary gem that captivates the imagination, imparts wisdom, and delivers genuine joy, look no further—this book has it all.
Russell feels like a failure in everything to do with his life. He is flunking school, being bullied by his old best friend and his own alcoholic father. His dream is to be a firefighter when he grows up but he knows he’s too weak and not brave enough to actually be one. On top of all that, his grandfather moved in and stole his bedroom. Russell’s mother works full time so it’s on Russell to take his grandfather to the park where there is a carousel his grandfather wants to ride everyday. Everyone thinks his grandfather is crazy. He always has these unbelievable stories he tells. Russell hates being seen with his grandfather as he thinks the bullying will get worse.
One day, Russell’s grandfather convinces him to ride the carousel with him. Reluctantly, Russell agrees. The duo was transported into another time and place on the horses they were on via the carousel. Russell realizes that the stories grandpa told might be real and his grandfather isn’t as crazy as originally believed.
From that day forward, Russell rides a different horse everyday and is transported into different scenarios, learning lessons about bravery and standing up for oneself.
Even though this is technically a kids book, I really enjoyed it. I like how every adventure was different and Russell was able to take something from each ride. The author did a good job with Russells character coming into his own as he embraces himself and becomes more confident with the help of magic.
As someone who loves horses, carousels, and middle grade books, “The Magic Carousel” was fun to read. I highly recommend it for middle grade readers who love horses and adventure books. It's also a good book for boys (obviously girls can read it too, but many horse books are written more for girls). Fifth-grade Russell wants to grow up to be a firefighter, but fears that he isn’t brave enough. He’s struggling with school and bullied by his former best friend. His alcoholic father tells Russ he’s a failure. Russ is responsible for taking his elderly grandfather on walks to the town's carousel, which his grandfather insists on riding every day, much to Russ’s embarrassment. But his grandfather has a secret—a brass ring that magically transports him by horseback into the past. He convinces his grandson to ride with him. I don’t want to spoil the story with specifics, but the carousel horses can talk and when they go back in time, they become “real” horses and go on dangerous adventures where Rusty must learn to confront his fears and discover strength to do the right thing. The writing is simple enough for younger readers, with lots of action and adventure and relatable struggles. It also deals with alcoholism and a serious medical emergency in an age-appropriate and sympathetic way.
This was a beautiful story. It is one that children and adults will enjoy. The idea of this story is really unique and I love how each horse that Rusty rode on taught him a different thing about himself and made him realise just how brave and competent he is as a child growing into an adult. Rusty is a sweet kid. But his life has problems, his dad is a alcoholic, he lost his bedroom to his grandad, he's failing school and he is being bullied daily by someone who used to be his friend. Everyday is a fight as with every fight he loses his confidence in himself and his abilities gets less and less. His grandad was always telling him fantastical stories. They were so crazy they couldn't possible be real. One day when his grandad forced him to ride the carousel with him, Rusty sion finds out where his stories come from. What follows is an adventure that will take Rusty through time, meeting different horses and their lives and through it all learning just how brave and capable he is.
The horses characters were amazingly written and each one had a unique story and lesson to teach which really made it special. This is a very magical ride which you will love no matter what your age.
Russel is a young boy in fifth grade and over the last year, a lot has happened to him, but the main thing was having to move his room into the basement so that his ageing grandpa could move in with them, this has led Russel to have new responsibilities which include taking his grandpa to the local park to ride on the carousel. He is also failing at school because of this upheaval, as well as being bullied by another of the boys in his class, there is name calling and pushing and Russel doesn’t know how to deal with it, so he just hopes that he isn’t seen with his grandpa because that could become something else he is teased for and finally, his dad drinks, a lot and he always shouts at Russel when he drinks, so this has also been affecting his schoolwork and he is worried that his dream to become a firefighter is slipping away.
One day, when his mum asks him to take his grandpa to the park again, his grandpa is riding on one of the outside horses and things seem to be going Russel’s way for once, the bullies haven’t seen him and his grandpa isn’t being too embarrassing, but just as he is hoping they can leave, his fears come to pass and the bullies turn up and when they leave, his grandpa asks him to join him for a ride. Russel is really reluctant because he is already embarrassed and annoyed, especially when his grandpa wants him to hold his hand as well, but eventually Russel agrees and settles onto the horse that his grandpa points to, but when he does, it does not go as he expects.
When he rides, he is magically transported to another place and time, but surely it can’t be real, they were just on the carousel and this is not it, so what has happened and why has this rude turned into an adventure of a lifetime? This is a brilliant book which takes something familiar and puts a new magical spin on it, with plenty of adventures, danger and magic, this is a wonderful little adventure where important lessons are learned and fun is had while doing it, it is also a book you will not want to put down.
This is such a wonderful magical read that you don't want to miss. This book has it all magic, historical knowledge, adventure, time travel, and a brave 10 year old learning to trust himself and believe in himself as he faces adversity.
Feeling almost neglected Russell is forced to move to the unfinished basement of his home, because his grandfather has come to live with them. He is already feeling bad and his grades are slipping when he has to deal with his former friend now bullying him on a daily basis. The last thing Russell wants to do is babysit his grandfather by walking him to the park carousel everyday, but his mother insists. When Russell tells his grandfather that he can't take him to the park anymore his grandfather picks two carousel horses for them to ride and shares with Russell the magic of the brass ring!
K. L. Small has written an imaginative captivating book that will capture the hearts of readers everywhere, me included. Your imagination and spark will light up as you read this book causing you to dream and get excited! I can't wait to see what's instore next for our brave 10 year old and his adorable grandfather with his eccentric stories!
Imagine if your beloved grandfather opened a gateway to magic! I LOVED this book. A unique fantasy idea, relatable characters, excitement, drama, tragedy, and a wonderful happy ending!
The author’s love for horses shines through the story, and her writing is compelling and fun. One of my favorite parts was when, climbing on the merry-go-round, Rusty our protagonist finds his brass ring contains magic powers. “As I closed my fingers around the ring, a tingle ran up my arm. The sound of stomping hooves and horses snorting surrounded me. Bits jiggles and stirrups rattled.” The first-person narrative really draws the reader into the story.
The author has added a glossary and some helpful historical references at the end of the novel to help teachers and students understand the background of the adventures, making this book educational as well as a thrilling read. I would highly recommend this to middle grade readers and children of all ages. Loved this—I only hope more of Rusty’s adventures are on the way!
The Magical Carousel was a cute story. It is geared toward probably early elementary ages, but I enjoyed it as an adult. The author was great at painting the scenes. The characters were great and I'm glad it had a happy ending. I love that the author took the time to add the history lessons and glossary at the end of the book. What a fun way to learn a little of history and use of horses through the years. I see that the author previously released the book with another title, I like this one better. I love the relationship Rusty build with his grandpa. I like that the author created a strained relationship based on real life situations. I went through a similar situation as a teen, and the relationship I was able to build with my grandfather was one of a kind; a blessing. I was kind of caught off guard with the alcoholism added to the story, and how it was a turning point for Rusty. But I guess a lot of kids have to deal with that, so it can help them understand how it impacts their life, and it's not their fault.
What a wonderful story and start to this series! This is the second time I’ve read from this author and just loved this one as well! These books are great for those older elementary and middle school age groups and love when their imagination takes over! This book is also great to read out loud or for bedtime reading with your imaginative youngins. The main character Russell has been going down a downward spiral as far as bad grades and bullies from school but the one thing that remains consistent is him taking his grandfather to the carousel everyday after school, his grandpa’s favorite spot. What Russell ends up finding out is the magic brass ring that belongs to his grandpa unlocks the magic within through a time travel adventure. Through this adventure that Russell embarks, he becomes a stronger person to conquer those areas in which he feels weak and defeated. Read this book with your kids and you get to go on the adventure as well! Can’t wait to read the others in this series!
The Magic Carousel was a great read, full of imaginative adventures with Rusty and his grandpa. I loved how in-depth the descriptions of each carousel horse were, and the beauty that was found in such creatures that showed years of wear and tear. Rusty could enjoy the love that all of the younger children felt in seeing within each of the horses' inner beauty and not the chips and wear and tear that showed the extent of years of bringing joy to young and old. I love that each horse had a different tale for Rusty to live through, which brought him closer to his grandpa, who loved him so dearly. This was such a great story teaching us to appreciate the joy of our youth and to hold those we cherish close to our hearts. What a beautiful story that helps to unlock our imaginations and live the thrill of the ride of such amazing horses on the carousel. If you are looking for a book that has wonderful images, life lessons, and heartfelt fun, then look no further, this is the book for you, it has everything! @Brandy Rymer 08/2023
The Magic Carousel (The Brass Ring Series Book 1) by K.L. Small. This is the perfect read for a middle school boy or girl. I think boys will relate better because the main character is a boy. I really enjoyed it as a older woman. Its about Russell who is in 5th grade and dreams of being a firefighter but is scared he's not brave enough. He is bullied at school by one of his former friends and his dad is a raging alcoholic. When his eccentric grandfather has to be walked to the park everyday its Russell's job. When his grandfather wants to ride the Carousel everyday its embarrassing. When his grandfather convinces him he has a secret ring that will get them to the past with horses and adventure Russell ends up riding the Carousel too. What ensues it all kinds of fun and adventures. This story is so good and it has the lesson that you can be anything you want as long as you try and believe in yourself!
Reminiscent of the popular Magic Tree House series, I enjoyed the time traveling historical fiction book The Magic Carousel even better. Kept my interest as well, because you never knew which chapter would land you on which year or story, and I could see kids looking up even more about a favorite story (as a side note, I would have liked to know about the historical notes for each chapter/adventure- I did the ebook and didn't think to flip to the end).
Loved how the storyline was unique and you grew to love the characters and the bond between grandparent and grandchild. The problems he encounters children (and adults) can relate to. Unlike the previously mentioned series that oftentimes seems flat (let's go to the Middle Ages.... with not much story line), this reads like a novel/story. I can't wait to see the series continue.
