ABEL BOTELHO nasceu em Tabuaço, a 23 de Setembro de 1856. Oficial do Exército, deputado republicano, senador, académico e diplomata, romancista e dramaturgo, a sua obra literária situa-se na encruzilhada do naturalismo e decadentismo e pode, a esse título, considerar-se exemplar. Entre 1891 e 1910 publicou, sob a designação genérica de «Patologia Social» cinco romances – O Barão de Lavos, O Livro de Alda, Amanhã, Fatal Dilema e Próspero Fortuna –, que ainda hoje surpreendem pela ousadia dos temas abordados e pela solidez da construção. Por sua vez, nos contos de Mulheres da Beira (1898) encontram-se algumas das melhores páginas do naturalismo rural português. Usou, como poeta e dramaturgo, o pseudónimo de Abel Acácio. Faleceu a 24 de Abril de 1917.
