Brutal Never Boys #1

King of Nothing

Rate this book
A Dark RH Romance Peter Pan retelling - the series is now complete!   No man has ever managed to satisfy me—until Peter Pan carries me away to Neverland and now all bets are off…   I never thought that there is another reality beyond this one. My life is normal—work, routine, a few disappointing flings—when a man grabs me from the street and carries me off the Neverland. A madman. Granted, he probably saved my life, and the island he has brought me to is beautiful, the sights including three more hunks like him. He says his name is Peter Pan and this is Neverland, he says they have been waiting for me and I may be the one… Yeah, he sounds like a madman, all right. A pity. He's so pretty. And so are his friends. Peter and the Lost Boys, living on an island where the mermaids sing in the sea and creatures named Reds roam the land. It sounds like a fairytale. But if Peter is mad, the rest aren't much better. Dark forces seem to be at work here, and I'm caught in a web of fear and doubt. The Lost Boys turn out to be violent, vicious men and I am their plaything. Caught in a web of desire and pleasure. Am I really the one they have been expecting? Can I save them? And do I even want to?

I can't put down a reading, no matter how horrible it is. This is the only reason I finished reading "King of nothing".

2/5 ⭐️⭐️ overall
2/5 🌶🌶 spice
2/5 👱‍♀️🧔characters
2/5 📗📘 plot

After reading the blurb, I had really high hopes for this book, but unfortunately the writing, grammar, combined with unlikable characters who had no development,  just let the whole thing fall flat for me.

The pacing was all over the place, the writing was confusing, the grammar was chaotic and there was no explanation or resolution to what was actually happening. Not a lot actually happened with the plot, and the story was dragged out when it could have been much shorter and more succinct. The whole thing just felt very repetitive, which was a shame because there was a really missed opportunity here for a light bulb moment reveal at the end, but we just never got one.
The story follows Peter Pan who's searching for 'the right Wendy', but we never find out what makes her the right one or what she actually is supposed to do because Peter is losing his memory. It's very confusing. He's aggressive and domineering and not in a sexy way. I actually found Wendy to be annoying as well. She is inexplicabley attracted to Peter and the lost boys but we never get a reason why, especially when they treat her like shit the entire time. There is zero chemistry between them and it makes the sex scenes awkward and illogical.

The spice: ok so there is a lot of dub-con/non-con in this book. Several of the sex scenes are the mmcs forcing themselves on the fmc while she's tied up, so if this isnt your thing then definitely skip this book. I didnt feel like there was a believable connection between Peter, Wendy, Tink, Wes and Colt and it impacted my ability to get imerged in the sex scenes. The two characters who had the most chemistry were actually the twins Wes and Colt, and we got one measily mm scene with no penatration. The spice was definitely a let down for me, it just didn't flow or make sense. Like at one point Peter and Wendy were fighting the Reds, then in the next scene Tink stumbles across them having sex over a rock. Like... what? No explanation, no lead up to it, they are just suddenly banging after a fight 🤔

Having said all that, its like a bad soapy that I cant stop watching. I will probably read the next book just to see exactly why Peter is losing his memory, what Wendy has to do with it and in hopes of a sexy scene with Hook and Pan 😅

Bad writing

This just felt off and forced. The author felt like she was trying to cash in on the success of the Vicious Lost Boys series with a bad rewrite. The storyline was way too close but not as well done. It didn't grab me. I tried to DNF, but...... it's Peter Pan, and I have a weird obsession.
The smut, which was supposedly the ploy to the book, just wasn't there. Almost fade to black but not. Idk how to describe it other than badly done.
Not well written, characters weren't engaging, the scenery was painted to be believable. It's just was not my cup of tea.

“I’m not inside nor out, not at night nor in the day, not of Fae but also not of man, not really born but delivered, not quite dead but not alive, either.”

3/5⭐ - 3.5/5🌶️

Peter Pan retellings seem to be popular these days! This one had some very interesting concepts, the most exciting one was making Tinkerbell into a man, who was a part of the RH. This was the first book of the series and mostly set the foundation of Neverland and set the embers for the future relationship of the Lost Boys and Wendy. In addition to that, the relationships between the Lost Boys were not fully grown, there were vague points, past events, and little secrets that remained unreached to the reader and created obstacles between all the mcs.

What fascinated me the most was Wendy’s influence on Neverland, and how her dreams and nightmares shaped the world. That was a very interesting concept to add. Wendy was a seemingly strong character. She had grown a backbone and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. Hook also had a very different role to play. He remained the antagonist but there was something more hidden behind it.

Although I liked the book's concept, it left me utterly confused. Perhaps it was the writing or the plot but it jumped from one point to the other, it left plot holes and questions that in many cases did not make sense. There was a lack of chemistry between the mcs. Most of the time they acted really hatefully or spasmodically toward each other and it left something to be desired. They were also acting a bit too annoying for half the book.

Finally, that cover is just gorgeous!

Did I like it? I liked the concept.

The spice was there but that was about it hence the 1 star.

I love Peter Pan Retellings and this just didn't give for me unfortunately. I found the writing style quite hard to read and the characters fell flat for me.
I was going to DNF at 60% because I still couldn't understand the plotline but pushed through to still, not understand the plotline.
Don't get me wrong the spice was there, but that was about it. I understand a slow burn but that's normally when there's something burning in the 1st place. The title King of Nothing.. to me it gave nothing.

I normally go out on a whim and buy pb copies of pan retellings because it's instant love for me.. but I'm glad that for some reason I read this on KU.

This really wasn't how I wanted to end my reading challenge for this year so I'm going to pretend this doesn't count towards my goal...

What a disappointment.

Wendy is just an average girl, living paycheck-to-paycheck when she is attacked in the street on her way to work. She wakes up on a beach with a tall, dark, and handsome tattooed man who can't seem to recall much of anything. He takes her to his own bunker, where he lives with three other men he calls the Lost Boys, and then proceeds to tell Wendy that she is in Neverland, also known as the Fae realm. Wendy is their only hope to overcome the nightmares plaguing the world, but she may be taken by madness before she can help.

Unfortunately, the more I read this book, the more confused I became. The beginning was pretty decent, but then about halfway through things just started all happening at once and with all of the alternating perspectives, it just got too overwhelming. There were so many plot points just thrown at you with no further explanation. Things ended up being overly vague and so much was happening at one point, it just became too much.

I also found Wendy's character overly mouthy and quite annoying. Peter's persona was briefly intriguing, with the handsome man/mysterious life thing going for him, but then things quickly turned wacky and confusing. I liked the idea of Tink being a male, half-human half-fae, but he was too angry and angsty the entire time that I felt that I was back to my own emo stage in middle school. The Twins were just.... odd.... too odd for my liking.

The only good thing going on in this is probably the spice. Hence the two stars. (09/2023)

King of Nothing is Book One in Mona Black’s Dark, Why Choose, Peter Pan/Lost Boys Retelling - Brutal Never Boys series. It ends on a cliffhanger. These books are scheduled for rapid release.

Wendy is an average young woman living an average existence. She has always felt like she didn’t quite fit in. Different. One day, she’s accosted on the street and her rescuer saves her but at a price. She has been kidnapped to Neverland.

Peter Pan and the Lost Boys have been waiting for this Wendy for many years. She’s their hope of breaking a magical curse on themselves and the island. They’ll just have to break her first to do it.

This is NOT the Disney version you grew up with. This retelling is dark and gritty. The characters are flawed. The Lost Boys are morally gray Alphaholes who are loyal to each other and determined to do whatever is necessary to break the curse. The world building is wonderful with an array of magical creatures. I look forward to finding out what happens in book two.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)

"King of Nothing" by Mona Black had so much potential, but unfortunately, it fell a bit flat for me. The plot makes big jumps that left me feeling disconnected from the story. I was hoping for some real character depth, but it just wasn’t there.

While there were moments that caught my interest, the overall execution made it difficult to stay invested in the characters or their journey. It’s disappointing because the concept had a lot of promise.

Overall, I’m giving this one 3 stars. I’ll be putting this series on hold for now.

Did I read this is one sitting 🫣 I did… lemme tell u woof wtf did I just read. I’m all for an adult fairytale retelling and I love me some Peter Pan but dayum plot didn’t make sense at all. Boys were just using her 🛑 and fl was trying so hard to be spunky but actually wasn’t. Fl felt like y/n and I absolutely knew nothing about her. One fae I did like was Tink Bell 🧚 and he was cuteeee. The twins creeped me out that was incest 🫣. And Peter, well he obsessive, pedo creep and confusing as hell. Anyways 3 stars since some 🌶️ was 😮‍💨. Will not be reading on tho😬

Couldn't finish

I'm not against dark romances but rape is something I'm not ok with. They all admit they pretty much raped all the other Wendys so much they jumped off a cliff to end their suffering. That I am not on board with.

The first time they have a legit sexual encounter she is crying and begging them to stop. They leave her there to choke on a gun. There is no chemistry between they do it to abuse and scare her.

That's not ok. I'm out.

I love a dark retell. This was not it. The story moved too fast and lacked so many details that could have made the plot somewhat better. Almost DNF, but didn’t want to start the year like that.

I am a huge fan of retellings so when I saw this series I knew I had to read it. This was a dark, spicy Peter Pan story that ended on a huge cliffhanger. I did feel like there were some plot holes and maybe at times the story was a bit rushed but I loved the twists that were put on the characters and the world. First off Tink is a male, who is half human half fae, Neverland is actually the world of Faerie, the twin lost boys are actually not twins at all but one human and one changling and instead of Peter missing his shadow as in most of the stories and needing the Wendy to find it, the Wendy is controlling the layout of Neverland in her dreams. I will definitely say that there are a ton of trigger warnings for this book! But overall the story was unique and the characters were well developed ( atleast what we have been told so far). So now I’m stuck here wondering if Wendy will save Neverland or just stay in the human world and live her life forgetting about everything until I read book two.

Dark Romantasy

I ate this up. Finished in nearly a day and can’t wait to read the next one! This is a storybook retelling of Peter Pan with a twist and spice. I will admit, I felt confused from time to time with the story progression and the unreliability of some of the characters, but overall I really enjoyed it. Getting to know each character and having multiple POV’s throughout the story gave me a better insight on their stories and the mix of different fantasy aspects was unexpected, but fun to read in this setting.

This book does end in a cliffhanger, so be prepared to want to start the second book just as quickly as you put this one down. But if you enjoy dark romantasy, why choose, hidden agendas, and troubled men… you’ll love this book!

Well it’s a Peter Pan book so I HAD to read it.

But…it had a lot of similarities to another Peter Pan series which is fine ebcause because you’re building off one book world.

I didn’t feel like I knew any of the characters, which was a bit weird but I’ll end up reading this series regardless because Neverland 🤷🏻‍♀️

I really want to give it 3.5 not just 3. There is a lot left to be desired, I'm hoping the fact that there are 3 more books means it will get better as the story unfolds more. It goes from 0 to 100 really quickly without much explanation.

In this dark Peter Pan retelling, some characters are familiar, and some are quite a departure from what we are used to – Peter, Hook, and Wendy are much darker than their Disney counterparts, and Tinker is not a Belle but a man. The story itself is dark and twisted, with Neverland being a place of nightmares instead of the fantasy land one escaped to to avoid growing up.

This book was a hard one to rate. I was so confused about what was going on almost the entire book, but I was also so caught up trying to figure it out that the pages flew by. I am still not 100% sure what I read, but I enjoyed reading it and am hooked for the rest of the series.

I think the confusion is intended, as Peter Pan is suffering serious memory loss, and Tinker and the twins refuse to give Wendy all the answers to her questions. Neverland is full of secrets and shifting alliances.

There is really no romance in this book, as I didn’t feel any emotional connection between the characters, but it still has a healthy amount of smut. The boys intentionally avoid becoming attached to the Wendys and punish them or use them, as they see fit. It just so happens that their current Wendy likes it. Their brand of punishment includes restraints, gun, and knife play. This book contains MM scenes.

That cliffhanger ending has me aching for more. I hope things begin to become clearer in the next book.
