Before I start with my review, I just want to clarify that I read the novel in Chinese raw, but my review is written in English because I can express myself better with English.
It took me longer than usual reading this novel because I read it in Chinese, but it was worth it. I hope there would be an English translation for this novel i. The future. I have a feeling the English danmei fandom would enjoy reading this as much as I did. It’s not even listed in Novel Updates and I’m the first to rate it here on Goodreads. Lmao.
This is a story about childhood sweethearts that suddenly became stepbrothers 8 years later. There will be a flashback that will bring you to the past before continuing with the present. Personally not a fan of long flashbacks so that was a bit meh for me, but the story got interesting as I read on. I just love the author’s choice of words and the way she described the scenes, bringing her readers to the scene of the plot and making the readers feel exactly how the characters are feeling.
Although the push and pull almost killed me (figuratively speaking), the way the plot was written had a balanced mix of emotions; fluffiness, amusement, frustration, angst and anxiousness. It wasn’t like a rollercoaster, it was more like a train ride from one stop to another and back. Slow burn start with a slow burn end. A lot of the scenes in the novel tickled my funny bone. I laughed every after a chapter or two. Also, there were a lot of scenes and lines in which reading between the lines is a must to be able to fully understand the story.
If I have to say one thing that made me rolled my eyes, I was honestly a bit put off by several “coincidences” in the story. I understand that the author wanted to express it as “fate”, but it was just too much. Then again, this is a fictional novel, so I guess it’s understandable? Aside from those coincidences, all the other questions I had in my mind were fully answered before the end of the novel, so that was a plus!
I was looking forward to the side CP but the author only dropped hints and vague lines. I really wanted to read their story! Hopefully, the author would write about them someday.
The author also wrote another novel called “Hope You’ve Been Well” and I highly recommend giving that a read as well. It’s not related to this story but it did have a similar plot line.
