The Dammerung

Rate this book
He awakens in the middle of nowhere . . .

When tensions explode between the Earth colonists and the native inhabitants of Nasa, a gas attack upon the cities wrenches people’s souls from their bodies and reorders them at random. Avan opens his eyes to a cornfield, wearing a stranger’s clothes and with mere minutes to find shelter before the deadly swarm of insects arises at sunset.

When any face could hide the soul of a loved one, Avan struggles to locate his younger brother Fong and their foster sisters among the millions of casualties in a world plunging into chaos. Weaving sinuously between characters and time, The Dammerung explores the collapse and reconstruction of a society through one family caught in the aftermath.

A compelling and excellent pre-and post-apocalyptic sci fi novel that bends and twists everything you think you know about storytelling. The story is told from the point of view of multiple characters, but wait: the chronology is reverse, and at one point, the characters have shifted bodies. . . you actually have to pay attention while you are reading this novel! But it challenges assumptions about gender, intelligence, love, families. Or, it's a novel about colonization and oppression, and fighting back. It is all of these things and more. Mind bending and mind blowing. Highly recommended.
