A Younger Man
Recently divorced and out of the closet, Noah Maitland is a regular-Joe, salt-of-the-earth guy who is newly navigating the world of dating other men. So far he hasn’t had a lot of luck. Re-read February 2017
Not a good one to re-read when I'm in a bad mood. I remember this being very romantic and fluffy, but it was just so full of SEX. I normally like that, but it wasn't really romantic sex. Just hot and heavy and UGG! I hate being crabby. I gotta take a star away because this just didn't work for me this time.

Comfort re-read November 2015 This one packed the emotional punch like the first time I read it and I absolutely loved it! Highly recommended.
There wasn't one thing I didn't love about this fabulous M/M romance. It swept me away, in every cheesy, stereotypical way you want to imagine.
I normally shy away from May/December romance stories, but this is one of my friend Tina K.'s favorite M/M romance stories ever, and it is a Cameron Dane book, so of course I had to read it in spite of the age difference. FUCK, am I glad I did! I just keep kicking myself that it took me so long! MCs Zane and Noah could not have been more perfect and loyal and loving and sweet. This was 100% a romance and I felt like I was floating on a cloud as I read. Guilty, sweet, sticky pleasure that I will happily share with everyone by yelling from the rooftop's. I cannot WAIT to read it again.
HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended. Read this NOW if you haven't already. Fuck yeah, 5+ stars shelf and absolute favorites shelf.

On paper this book has everything I love. Age-gap, a young man in need, kids who act their age and don’t get in the way of the story, some hurt/comfort. Now this all sounds like it should be a total winner for me. And it wasn't. I’m not even sure why, just that the writing bothered me a bit.
The sexy times were described in a way that was almost crude (and I did not like the carrot scene at all), and the rest of the story bored me a bit. While I was re-reading this I kept thinking why it was that I wasn’t more engaged with the story, the characters, but I still can’t figure it out exactly.

Zane is a 24 year old young man who has custody of his younger brother and sister. He is barely scraping by as it is when he loses his job. Now he is being evicted out of his apartment as well. That is when he meets Noah, a 42 year old divorced man.
Noah witnesses how a young man gets shoved out on the streets and is not allowed to get his things from his apartment. He steps in before things can get out of hand. When he sees the young man, he knows he can’t just walk away and he offers Zane a place to stay in a cabin he is fixing up for someone else.
Zane feels immensely grateful that Noah came by when he did. Now he has a place to stay with his brother and sister.
When Noah, a handyman, suddenly needs a new employee after the last one showed up drunk, he asks Zane if he is able to help out . Zane has no experience with physical labour, but he is a quick learner.
When the two work together closely every day it is becoming clear to Zane that he might not be straight. He has no sexual experience, but he always assumed he would date a girl one day. But Noah makes his heart beat faster, and Zane has no idea what to do about that.
Noah got divorced because he could no longer deny his feelings towards men anymore. Luckily his ex-wife is still his best friend and they work great together as co-parents. But now he has to go out into the dating world and actually date men. He would rather date Zane, the young man who can never be his….
Now this looks like an amazing book. But there was still something missing throughout the story that made me feel disconnected from the characters. Noah was just so darn sensible all the time, he bored me a bit. I think I liked Zane more, but he didn’t completely win me over either.
There was some hurt/comfort going on that I normally swoon over, but here… it was just okay.
It wasn’t a bad story, and there were parts I did like. So 3.5 stars it is.

This was another one on the TBR clean-up pile. But I'm sad to say it just didn't work for me.
It was just too damn sappy and cheesy.
I wanted to be all....
But the reality was more...
It kind of made me cringe....and roll my eyes. Lots of eye rolling going on.
It was just too much.
I didn't make it to the infamous carrot scene. But my curiostiy got the best of me....
So yeah, this one wasn't for me. :)

This one is actually a difficult one to rate.
On the one hand some of the dialogue was just-
Straight up. I couldn't help but snort a couple times. And the carrot-
Don't even get me started. It was almost too much. It was bordering 3.5 stars for a bit. But then at the same time- that cheesy dialogue often had me going a little like this:

So despite some serious cheese: I loved it. It was sweet and sexy. One of my favorite parts in any romance is sexual tension. Innocent touches, longing looks- that dance between two characters who are falling in love. This book certainly delivered on that end. Then a little bit of angst sprinkled at the end- it won me over. These two characters were great together. If you enjoy a nice fluffy read (like myself)-

I can't quite put my finger on why but A Younger Man couldn't and didn't even come close to matching the brilliance of Grey's Awakening and that's the issue for me, I was expecting too much and that obviously was a big mistake. Is it fair of me to compare? I'm torn because this was a surprise, I had high hopes but ended up with a family orientated story that didn't fit the picture I had conjured up in my mind. In my defense though Cameron Dane's writing has changed that special element which makes her books so raw and irresistible was missing. The length of the book could have been a factor as well, too long and a slow start. Then again it could just be me having a bad day.
I did enjoy Zane and Noah's relationship although it did take a bit of a back seat but when they were together it was the usual hot and steamy stuff with some kink thrown in. Zane the cutey and virgin, was a very enthusiastic partner he got the hang of it beautifully. The other part of the story with the Aunt, the kids, Noah's dad, and loan shark wasn't bad just not great, I only wish the focus was on Zane and Noah more. Highlight for me was Sirus and Grey those two kill me with how much sexual chemistry they have hot hot! All in all I am still not over my disappointment...........

I'm sorry, but this one just wasn't for me. Younger man/older man combo is awesome...in theory, but then it got kind of daddy-relationship-y to me. Maybe I just read it that way, but yeah, that's how I read it, even without any overt "f**k me, daddy!" comments.
I ended up skimming beginning about halfway into the story. The sex scenes were a little excessive, the dialogue was a little unrealistically candid and flowery and verbose, and just...I didn't vibe well with the story or characters ultimately.
Also, while the sexytimes in Dane's stories tend to be over the top, I seem to remember fewer references to "rectums" and "anal canals" and the like in the previous books I've read of this author's.

They’re baaack….God I missed steaming cocks, taints and fluttering channels. With every flutter of a channel I know I’m reading the one, the only erotic writer extraordinaire, Cameron Dane!
A Younger Man is about Noah Maitland, a secondary, yet memorable character in Grey's Awakening. Noah had a strong interest in one of that books MC's, Sirus; he also came out and, with much soul searching, ended his 20 year marriage. I'm so glad he's back with his own story. The other MC is Zane Halliday, a young man who has lost his parents and is trying to keep his two younger (step) siblings with him against difficult odds. Zane is down on his luck and being evicted from his meagre accomodation when Noah first meets him, feeling concern for the young man and helping him out - because that's the kind of guy Noah is.
It would be easy to peg the two MC's as just too darn nice, but they are written so well that you can't help but really like if not love them both. Noah as this respectful, courteous, kind, family orientated 42 year old man, that has genuine fears about being gay. He doesn't know how to be with a man, tries dating, but finds it all too overwhelming. When he gives his affection he wants it to be real. He also worries about the impact it has on his family; not to mention his concern over growing desires for a 24 year old that is close in age to his own 19 year old son, Seth. Zane is this 'mature before his years' 24 year old that had nursed his ill step father from 15-19 and then continued to raise his siblings, Duncan and Hailey, whilst trying to hold down a job. He has put his life on hold to be responsible.
Cameron Dane has writen a contemporary novel here and subtlely touches on current issues, such as the difficulty one faces coming out, particularly when one has been married; and, most timely, marriage equality -
Sirus said in a raspy voice, “You’ve never called me your husband before.”
Defiant, almost angry sounding, Grey spat, “I don’t care what this state says, or if it’ll ever give us a paper that legally allows me to call you so.” He stalked Sirus, adding, “You are the person I trust and believe in most in this world; you are my partner for life; you own my heart, and that makes you my husband. Don’t ever forget it or think you’re getting away.”
It is not lost on me that this book is set in North Carolina.
There is a lot to love about A Younger Man; mostly it's the well written protagonists, Noah and Zane. There are other factors too, such as the love Zane has for his family mirroring the love Noah has for his, the constant awareness of the responsibility both men have to their families in their own ways. The understanding they both share of extened family - Zane's loss of his mother and step father and the struggle Noah is having to gain a solid relationship with his dad, a man he deeply admires, since coming out as gay.
Cameron Dane is a good writer and, for me, what sits her a rung above many in this genre is her ability to wring the very depths of the souls of her characters out on the page. Noah and Zane with another writer could have just come off as M/M versions of a Mary Sue, and that would have been awful. I like a flawed character and I like darkness in a lot of my books. A Younger Man, whilst having two antagonists in the background, and periods of self reflection from both MC's - Zane never having had the time to work out his sexuality before, and Noah dealing with his concern at wanting someone so young, so inexperienced - is a very sweet book at heart. The passion between the two men is palpable though - from when they are originally working it out, including glances, light touches, fantasizing, to when they do get together. The sex is plentiful and erotic to the max, Cameron Dane writes some kinky-arse sex at times but, let me say, very few writers can write sex as well as Cameron Dane. Very few writers can write as well as Cameron Dane full stop. I loved this book.

Ummm, so I'm going to go with 3.5 on this one. There is a five star story in here but it was buried under too much dialogue, too much prose, too many repetitive corny declarations...just too much. I found myself skimming until I found something of interest, then I'd have to back up, become engrossed for a chapter or so, then start skimming again.
The good is done really, really well. There are kernels of gooey goodness buried here - gems that will make you smile, make you teary, make you proud. The characters are all lovable. I LOVED the relationships between the MCs' kids/siblings and totally enjoyed the scenes where they were all together. I loved Zane and Noah and Noah's fierce protectiveness. I enjoyed their journey to each other and mutual discovery of m/m loving and I LOVED the cameo by Sirus and Grey of Book 2, Grey especially.
Parts of the story were repetitive (I skimmed most of the sex) and as with most CD books, the characters just talk too much and are way too flowery for male MCs. Still, I did love them and found their story worth reading.
PS. This book is extremely similar to Andrew Grey's A Taste of Love which I also loved.

May 7, 2014NFTY. Not even the lure of GMO carrot fornication could tempt me to finish this. I made it 100 pages, which is a miracle in itself that I gave it that long.
I knew it had a dim prognosis right out the start gate with this shit:
WHO does that? F'ing Noah (a fictional MC) does.
And the homeless Zane-a young (straight) guy suffering a chia-parenting garden-variety siblings-conflict..because who does this? Takes care of siblings because their parents are MIA-when he can't even take care of himself?
F'ing Zane (another fictional MC) does. And IDEK or care what tragedy made that conflict possible..I just knew I wasn't going to babysit those rugrats through the story..(when my first thought was-wtf are we gonna do w/the kids during the sex?)

F'ing Zane (another fictional MC) does. And IDEK or care what tragedy made that conflict possible..I just knew I wasn't going to babysit those rugrats through the story..(when my first thought was-wtf are we gonna do w/the kids during the sex?)

I've been waiting for this book since Noah made his appearance in Cabin Fever#2: Grey's Awakening. He's a handyman who after acknowledging his attraction to one the GA protagonists, Sirus, decides to end his 20 year marriage and come out so he can pursue his infatuation. Unfortunately for him Sirus isn't interested in him that way so Noah is at a bit of a loose end and this is where we see him at the start of this book.
He wants to be in a relationship but he's reluctant to start dating, mostly because he feels awkward and unsure of how to act. The awkardness is absolutely adorable. Noah is an extremely attractive man, both in looks and personality, so seeing him try to make his way in unfamiliar territory was so interesting.
I think another reason for his awkwardness is his father. Since coming out Noah has had a strained relationship with both his parents, his father especially. This is really heart breaking to read as his tries to regain that bond.
So here we have Noah, ready and interested in dating men but tentative. Into his life walks Zane. A man too young with too many responsibilities, and straight.
My heart broke for Zane. He's doing everything he can to honour a promise made to his step-father and keep his family together. Noah is there for Zane when Zane desperately needs help. While Noah helps Zane out of bind their friendship never seems unbalanced, it was really interesting to see their relationship deepen and become stronger. While Noah is attracted to Zane he never lets that influence his actions in helping Zane and his siblings.
The sexual chemistry couldn't be hotter. I think that has a lot to do with newness on both their parts. They're both open and willing to explore the attraction and just going for what feels right for them both.
I was so curious where Dane was going take Noah's character and it was so worth the wait. This was a great story about finding love and loving your family, as well as making tough choices and sacrifices.
Even though this story is a part of a series it can be read as a standalone story. Recommended.

This book is well-written, the characters are interesting, lovely people and are attractive, and the storyline is compelling.
The reason I have stopped reading is because of the fact that it contains elements that personally bother me...this book might well work for others.
1. I hate secrets. I hate secrets as a plot device. I hate secrets around issues that can be resolved by simply communicating. I hate secrets that are of stupid mistakes that will cause harm because it was sat on and not shared and resolved. There is a secret in here that's dumb and unnecessary especially since Zane was so open prior and received the help he needed upon sharing.
2. The hallucinatory fantasy masturbation scenes are perturbing to me at the very most and just plain not sexy at the least while also striking me as a cheap way to insert sex early into the book before the MCs get together. It's unnecessary and weird. It's like a Star Trek holodeck situation. Ummm, no!
3. Abuse. Noah allowing the dumb bimbo blonde girlfriend of the alcoholic ex-employee he was forced to fire from his job (because he kept calling out drunk and then drank on the job during lunch) to slap him and verbally lash out at him, spewing nasty homophobic insults was too much. He seems to be carrying this guilt because he came out of the closet and there's a sort of willingness to turn the other cheek etc. Again, no. I prefer my gay romance guilt free. Grow some balls and don't slap her back but don't stand and apologetically take it. You don't play nice with neurotic bitches...
Anyway, so that's why I DNFed.

I enjoyed this book more than "Grey's Awakening", which was rather overwrought sexually for me. "A Younger Man" is more of a romance and I liked the May/Dec aspect and the virginal younger MC. The characters were both admirable, and there was lots of sexual tension leading up to the first kiss. After that I still was eager to finish the book to find out what happened on the various subplots and to see the couple establish themselves among family and friends.

Noah’s a 42 year old man, is recently divorced but is reluctant to date.. He has never been intimate with a man. He just never seems to have a click with the right man.
He meets Zane. Zane has been kicked out of his home because he was behind with his rent. He lives with his siblings in a motel and has nearly run out of money. Noah offers him help with giving him the opportunity to live in a cabin till he is on his feet again.
There is an immediately attraction between the men. But Noah would never get involved with a younger man. And not to mention, Zane is straight!!! They become real good friends and Noah even gives him a parttime job in his construction business.
Zane is 24 years old and is doing everything in his power to provide for his brother and sister. He is such a mature young man because of his responsibilities at a young age… Zane is confused about his growing feelings for Noah. He has never been able to discover his sexuality and has no clue to act on his feelings for a man.
Again, the growing sexual tension was so good described. It never felt like porn, but boy did these men luuvvve exploring and having sex with each other. Hot damnnn, Cameron Dane surely can write sex scenes!!!

There was a little bit angst in the story but that didn’t bother me.
“When I’m with you, no matter what we’re doing, it’s like there’s this beast clawing inside me, pushing at me to touch you and fuck you, because it feeds on that connection, and it needs it for its very survival.”

I will definitely be reading this book multiple times and I’ll sure be checking out some other books of Cameron Dane…

It's a sweet story, but it lacks the sense of bat-shit-crazy sexual overload which coloured the previous book (although there's a carrot used in unexpected ways, as I'm sure you've noticed popping up in the feeds of everyone reading this book!)
There's still a lot of very graphic and lovely sex, and some classic Dane lines ("...sending Zane's rectum into a confused state of bewilderment"), but here it's played as astraight more traditional romance.
Also there's a deus ex machina, which is a cheap trick.
The age gap is handled very sensitively: I believe 100% in this ship.
A nice (and long!) read, that delivers more than the average m/m.

1.5 stars. Meh m/m romance about a fortyish handyman who gets a twenty-something man and his siblings a place to live in exchange for fixing up the place. The handyman doesn't want to be attracted to the younger man, but... The sex scenes were frequent, lengthy, and excessively euphemistic to the point of being purple prose. "Striated bud"? "Pulsing channel"? Just ugh. I only made it through the book because I finally gave up reading the sex scenes.

February 24, 2016I guess this would have been a 4-5 star read several years ago when I started reading M/M. Now, with all the books I have read in between, I just lose my patience to read another book with a well-known storyline. It started out very nice and engaging, but when there was the bad guy demanding his money back and then the relative wanting to get the kids - same old same old. Everything felt constructed, thrown at me as the reader without any build-up, so I couldn't really believe any of it. Not even the out-of-the-blue attraction Zane felt for Noah was credible. So, I'm done with it.

I can't find anything to fault this book, so 5 star it is, carrot and all. The characters, both main and secondary, the feelings, the sexual tension, the hotness, the love, the... everything!

I've griped before about m/m romances that have the two main characters jumping into bed, doing the horizontal mambo within a couple of pages and then having sex every other paragraph!
Well, HURRAH!! This lovely story gets it just right. Noah and Zanes romance is perfect.
What I really loved was that Cameron Dane kept the sexual attraction between the two of them simmering for a long time and the will they/won't they tension was written so well that I was almost sorry when the inevitable happened. Once they do get together the sex is sizzling but it never feels repetitive. The actual story that runs alongside the romance contains some conflict and angst but is well balanced, so you never feel bogged down and it leads to a HEA that left me feeling contented and very satisfied. It was a lovely ending, full of new starts for everybody involved but especially Zane who starts the story with not a lot going for him till he meets Noah. Bless him!
The story before this ' Greys Awakening ' introduces Noah and was also a cracking book. It's not essential to get it first but you'd be doing yourself a disfavour if you don't, as it's also a 5* read and keeper. Get them both now!

3.5 stars. This was not as magical for me as some of Cameron Dane's other books (especially the previous one in this series), but still a pleasant way to spend a few hours.
What I liked: The intense gotta-have-you-now attraction and lust that is typical of this author's stories. Both main characters are good-hearted and sweet, and I was rooting for them.
What didn't work for me: I expect a fair amount of hyperbole in Cameron Dane's writing, but here it seemed particularly dense. I found myself rolling my eyes more than once, which is a shame, considering that the relationship between Noah and Zane is actually quite lovely. I just don't understand the need to overwhelm it with over-the-top descriptions.

While I loved Grey's Awakening and I like this author, this book just didn't work for me and was a struggle to finish. While I normally don't mind the age difference between characters, Zane just came across too immature and I don't think fit with Noah, but that is just my opinion. The pacing in the beginning for me was slow and then it seemed the second half of the book was nothing but a non-stop sex fest every time they got together that I ended up just skimming through the remaining book. This book was just a disappointment to me after reading Grey's Awakening.

OK, this one had serious potential, but it was another book that got bogged down in its own melodrama and repetition. The sex scenes became a chore to read, and the dialogue between Noah and Zane devolved from shy, gruff friendliness to unrealistic, soap-opera monologues. It actually became kind of embarrassing witnessing these two characters proclaim their love for each other, and that's never a good thing in a romance.
Also, the terms "ass channel" and "fluttering in his chute"? Not anything I wanna read again, thanks.

Why I read it: I heard the buzz on Twitter. The words "carrot sex" were used. I bought.
What it's about: (from Goodreads) Recently divorced and out of the closet, Noah Maitland is a regular-Joe, salt-of-the-earth guy who is newly navigating the world of dating other men. So far he hasn’t had a lot of luck. Noah is a father first -- he has two teenage sons. As the owner of a handyman business in a small community, Noah wants someone to love who is also appropriate for where he is in his life.
Zane Halliday is a young man -- much too young for Noah -- who is struggling to take care of his brother and sister and meet his bills every month. Recently thrown out of his apartment, Zane stumbles on Noah, literally. Noah offers Zane a place where he and his siblings can temporarily live, and later gives him a part time job.
Each man is dealing with his own set of problems, and both crave someone to talk to and trust. Soon a friendship between Noah and Zane blossoms. But Noah could never fall for someone so much younger than he is -- not to mention Zane is not gay. But what if sexually innocent Zane isn’t as straight as he assumed he was? How will Noah be able to resist this much younger man once Zane figures out the only person he wants is Noah?
What worked for me (and what didn't): I read Grey's Awakening some time ago and barely remember it now. I haven't read others in the series but I think this one works fine as a standalone novel. Unfortunately, the novel didn't work that well for me overall.
I felt that it dragged in parts - a lot of the first third/half of the book was spent with Noah and Zane separately angsting about how they ought not be together and how they should hide their feelings. I had thought, from the blurb, that there would be an initial development of a friendship which would then become attraction - on that basis the over 300 pages seemed appropriate. But the attraction was pretty much immediate and the angsting felt drawn out to me.
Parts of the dialogue felt very unrealistic to me - more suited to the narrative perhaps but not what people would actually say. Here's an example of what I mean:
“I was going to tell you something like that a minute ago,” Zane chuckled, and new pink bloomed under the afterglow still making his skin glisten, “but when you started coming so powerfully, I lost myself, and all I could do was fall into the pleasure you were feeling and willfully let it suck me into the abyss too.”
I mean, who talks like that?
So, there were some problems. I did enjoy the way Noah was with his sons and I'm glad that Noah was able to reconcile with his father. It took time and that felt realistic to me. But, There was one point in the book where Zane is threatened with some naked/sex photos regarding the custody of his brother and sister. Given the estrangement between Noah and his dad, it did feel like a strange choice for him to come to the legal rescue for Zane - surely he would have had to see the photos?
The set up, with Noah meeting Zane and then immediately helping him out with a place to live and lending him his car indefinitely made me raise my eyebrows a bit - Noah's "good guy radar" must be stellar. Zane wanted to be considered an equal to Noah in the relationship and I can certainly see how he would struggle with that. But, Zane clearly read as a much younger man to Noah - older than his years maybe but very much younger than Noah and I'm not sure that was really addressed in the book by anyone.
Zane and Noah do like to have sex outdoors - it's a wonder they weren't sprung more often considering. For an older man, Noah certainly has a short recovery time! And, then there's the carrot sex. Yep, sex and a carrot. Enough said.
What else? I'm not a gay man so I can't speak with any authority on this, but it seemed odd to me that a self described gay man (as opposed to say, a bisexual man) would refer to his heterosexual sex life as very satisfying. Admittedly, I haven't spoken to many any gay men on the topic (can you imagine how that conversation would go? o-0) but I've heard Dan Savage say on his podcast that gay guys don't like to have sex with women. Maybe he's wrong? Anyway, it felt odd in the book and didn't quite explain to me why he would leave an otherwise happy marriage to go have sex with guys if everything was so wonderful with his wife. Just sayin'.

2.5 stars Holy Mother of God these guys never shut the fuck up! Never, in the history of EVER, have two men been so effen long winded regarding every single emotion or thought that crosses their mind!
OK, so let's break it down. First 50 pages or so, I thought this was gonna be a 4 star for me. I liked both men and the situations they found themselves in, and I liked the set up of how they got thrown together There began the secret lusting and stolen glances, etc, which was all good.
The problem was that it all got a bit repetitive. And given the length and flowery nature of both the dialogue and the inner monologues, that got old fast. The first thing to drag a bit was the two of them secretly pining for each other. Again, the time-frame made sense but it was the way it was written that got repetitive and a bit tiresome. Then they get together.
I will say, that when they finally get to the sex, it is indeed hot. The problem is that even that got repetitive and long winded. Once they started having sex it seemed like every other scene was them doing it. And I would have to skim upwards of 10+ pages of description about a blowjob to move the story along faster. This is also where the excessively emotional chatter began. Don't get me wrong, I like dirty talk, and I like when people's emotions get away from them during sex. But... this got to be a bit ridiculous. Some examples that had me rolling me eyes:
--"I can't think of anything better than feeling you inside me for the first time outside, under the sun, in the place where you let me know a little more about you every day we spend talking and eating lunch together."
--“I was going to tell you something like that a minute ago,” Zane chuckled, and new pink bloomed under the afterglow still making his skin glisten, “but when you started coming so powerfully, I lost myself, and all I could do was fall into the pleasure you were feeling and willfully let it suck me into the abyss too.”
--"A minute ago something inside forced me to hold back from coming. I don't want to let go until I'm deep inside you, giving you a little bit of that raw, hot screwing you give me whenever we come together."
--Another good one I couldn't find from before they got together, where Noah describes being jealous of the sun because it got to touch Zane's beautiful skin as it glinted off him by the lake... are you effen kidding me?!?
And despite both having the need to be discrete, they would constantly do it outdoors or in the open where they could get caught. During those sex scenes every time I turned the page I would jump to the bottom first to make sure they hadn't gotten busted before beginning to read the page cuz it was so stressful!
Eh anyway, I just got bored cuz it started dragging on and on and the dialogue got way too flowery and cheesy to feel realistic for me.

I have a rambly and long winded review which can basically be summed up perfectly by this quote from Nile Princess:
"There is a five star story in here but it was buried under too much dialogue, too much prose, too many repetitive corny declarations...just too much"
OK, so let's break it down. First 50 pages or so, I thought this was gonna be a 4 star for me. I liked both men and the situations they found themselves in, and I liked the set up of how they got thrown together There began the secret lusting and stolen glances, etc, which was all good.
The problem was that it all got a bit repetitive. And given the length and flowery nature of both the dialogue and the inner monologues, that got old fast. The first thing to drag a bit was the two of them secretly pining for each other. Again, the time-frame made sense but it was the way it was written that got repetitive and a bit tiresome. Then they get together.
I will say, that when they finally get to the sex, it is indeed hot. The problem is that even that got repetitive and long winded. Once they started having sex it seemed like every other scene was them doing it. And I would have to skim upwards of 10+ pages of description about a blowjob to move the story along faster. This is also where the excessively emotional chatter began. Don't get me wrong, I like dirty talk, and I like when people's emotions get away from them during sex. But... this got to be a bit ridiculous. Some examples that had me rolling me eyes:
--"I can't think of anything better than feeling you inside me for the first time outside, under the sun, in the place where you let me know a little more about you every day we spend talking and eating lunch together."
--“I was going to tell you something like that a minute ago,” Zane chuckled, and new pink bloomed under the afterglow still making his skin glisten, “but when you started coming so powerfully, I lost myself, and all I could do was fall into the pleasure you were feeling and willfully let it suck me into the abyss too.”
--"A minute ago something inside forced me to hold back from coming. I don't want to let go until I'm deep inside you, giving you a little bit of that raw, hot screwing you give me whenever we come together."
--Another good one I couldn't find from before they got together, where Noah describes being jealous of the sun because it got to touch Zane's beautiful skin as it glinted off him by the lake... are you effen kidding me?!?
And despite both having the need to be discrete, they would constantly do it outdoors or in the open where they could get caught. While I wouldn't actually call this a May/December romance, maybe a May/October, I do like the dynamic of the older man and the younger man who has had to deal with so much responsibility he is older than his years.
Noah recently came out to his wife and started divorce proceedings so they could both be free to find actual happiness. Wonderfully, they managed to remain actual friends and not just for the sake of their sons, but because they do actually care for each other. So that's great, but Noah isn't having any much on the dating front. Noah is not a clubbing, get off in the bathroom with a random man sort of guy. He's monogamous and commitment-centric. A few of his dates have gone ok, but something just isn't there for him.
Zane is a young man in his mid-20's that has been handed way too much responsibility. He wouldn't have it any other way, though, and he will do nearly anything to keep his aunt from taking his brother and sister from him. He is young, though, and hasn't always had the luxury of having good choices to make. Combine that with getting laid off from one job when the business folded and you have a recipe for homelessness.
In fact, that is exactly what Noah rescues Zane from. Noah sees someone that needs help and doesn't think twice about offering it. As they get to know one another, their attraction to one another gets stronger. Zane didn't actually know he was gay. He has had exactly zero free time to explore anything sexual since he was a young teen. So he hasn't really thought about sex at all. But when Noah comes along, Zane is suddenly not only thinking about sex -- but he is thinking about sex with Noah. Steamy!
Watching Noah and Zane circle each other was fun. They both wanted so much, but they also had their reasons why they thought it was a bad idea. Zane was convinced that if his aunt found out he was gay, that she could take the kids and Noah was stuck in the 'he's too young for me' place.
Let me tell you, though, when they do finally break, Oh. My. Word. is it hot. Zane has a really good imagination, it turns out and when he is comfortable, he is mighty creative. Holy Mackerel, playing with your food never sounded so fun.
So, yeah, I loved this book. Even more than the previous one.

This book ranges from "great" to "cheesy" to "ick?" and "again??".
The storyline is sweet and awesome and in the beginning I fell hard for the characters. Both are immediately loveable. There interaction is equally written well, you feel the chemistry, everything is peachy. That ist the "great"-part.
Only complaint about the first half of the book I have is, that I didn't like the detailed imagined sex. That felt like the attempt of the author to add sex to that part of the book when the MCs don't have some.
Especially if you take the second part in condsideration where they have non-stop ferocious sex...okay..there are still some page without but really..everything in their life is accompanied by or commented through sex then. That would be the "again??" part.
I like sex in my books, really, but this was even a bit too much for me, especially because it's soooo over the board. They go batshit crazy about each other every time, every time they get harder than they've ever been before, they went from 0 to 100 in less than a second (we remember, both inexperienced...duh). And wow, they feel things in places that make me wonder if I've been born without nevers...duh. Adding to that a slight "ick"-factor - and I'm not talking about the carott but the butt sex after and during work days with the only cleaning afterwards with wipes and then a blow job...okay, that was my "ick"-moment.
What they lack in tenderness during their physical lovemaking is added as cheesy talking in between. The constant telling how they adore each other...well, maybe I just should read the first part twice and skip the second.
All in all I think 4 stars for the first part and 2 for the second...makes 3 as an end result.
