Brush Strokes

Rate this book
Tanya spends hours at a time painting renditions of the masculine - and very nude - glory that is Joe, her gorgeous blue-eyed model. The things an artist has to suffer for her craft. When he offers to help her learn how to improve her work, simple lessons in touching and learning his body, she’s willing to suffer that much more...for the sake of her craft, of course.

When tragedy strikes, her career is left dangling by a thin thread. The secret she’s harbored - that she’s been unable to finish her artwork - is exposed. Now she has little more than twenty-four hours to not only create the best piece of her life, but also finish it in time to be shown or lose everything she’s tried to build.

What began as erotic lessons in art becomes a study in love and perseverance that Joe will never let her forget.

Hot! Hot! Hot!

From the start this little novel it was hot.

Tanya is an artist, she spends pretty much all day painting her male (nude) model. Joe is a very attractive man... And he is in love with Tanya, he not only finds her attractive but also admires her and really believes in her.

Tanya is having a little difficulty with her art, she's experiencing a form of writer's block but in this case would be am artist's block. Lucky for her Joe is more than happy to help and he might just surprise Tanya as he has a few tricks up his sleeves to help her overcome her block.
But when disaster strikes Tanya will really have to draw strength to surpass it and Joe will have to show Tanya that he is more than just a nude body.

Tanya spends all day every day staring at the nude form of her male model Joe. A very attractive man, it’s certainly no hardship, but the paintings don’t seem to be working for anyone. She has a room full of unfinished paintings and a patron who is getting antsy about the lack of finished work. When Joe offers to help her try a new technique to improve her work, she jumps at the chance at working more closely with him.

What Tanya doesn’t realize is that Joe is attracted to her. He’s been thinking of ways to get her to notice him as something other than an object to paint, and this seems like the perfect way to do it. By opening up Tanya’s senses and making her see him as a whole man, Joe unleashes Tanya’s desire for him. As they utilize all of her senses to explore his body, they embark on sexual journey like neither of them have ever experienced.

When tragedy strikes, Tanya’s career is left dangling by a thread. Her Patron has also decided to demand enough work to exhibit in a show and now the pressure is on. Can Joe help Tanya get together a portfolio at the same time as trying to build on the already fragile foundations of a relationship.

I was contacted by the author for a review of this book. First up, a big apology because this review should have been done a while ago. I agreed to this review as I have read Dee Carney’s work before. I like her style of writing and I find the plots inventive and original. This one was no different.

The central point of this story is the burgeoning sexual relationship between an artist and her model. It was different, I’d go so far to say unique, and the whole premise intrigued me. The fact that it was a novella worked for me too; sometimes, I just need a bite sized book to fit into one day’s reading.

For a novella, there was a hell of a lot of sex; it is a very hot little number. It begins from one of the first scenes and is a constant theme throughout. When Joe convinces Tanya that she can’t look at him as a 2D image to paint, he encourages her to stop using her eyes to explore his body and use her other senses. What follows is a very happy ending for him and a bucket load of confusion for her. They continue to explore his body in the same way, amping up the sexual tension and creating a whole heap of hot flushes for me. I loved this scene; it was so erotic yet so tender!

The progression of their story was very well plotted out. I did feel that Joe was more emotionally invested in their relationship than Tanya was; Joe’s entire focus was on them, but Tanya always had one eye on the paintings. I guess I can understand that, but it did make for a slightly lopsided tale. Again when disaster strikes, Joe was the more emotionally invested out of the two and actively created solutions and kept them together.

This is a short and sexy tale with an original premise and a lovely, dreamy leading man. With plenty of sex and an engaging plot, it’s definitely a fun read.

Joe has been modeling nude for Tanya for about two months but recently, Tanya has been struggling with her paintings. Joe encourages Tanya to close her eyes and open up her other senses and tells her to touch him. With her eyes closed she starts to experience the contours of his body. This touch session sets off the sexual tension that has been hanging around them for weeks, and it ends with a happy ending for Joe. But it also gives Tanya the push she needs to complete her painting. She has a renewed passion and vigor to her art.

She needs this new energy because her patron, Mr. Killian is ready to show her work. He has invested a lot of money into Tanya and is now demanding six pieces to show and Tanya only has four days to get them all ready. Tanya has started several amazing pieces, but hasn’t finished any of them. Joe has deep feelings for Tanya and is ready to put in the extra hours so she can finish this show, and hopefully realize Joe is means more to her than just a nude model.

Brush Strokes starts off with a very sexually intense scene, as Joe gives Tanya permission to touch him. The sexual tension is very thick, as she slowly goes over his body, and eventually turns into a sexual release for Joe. I like this scene, but I wish the ramifications of what happened between them were explored more. Instead, Tanya gets Joe off, and then there isn’t really any awkwardness between them. Tanya goes off to paint, and Joe continues to moon over Tanya and try to figure out how to get her to really see him.

Shortly after this, a crisis hits Tanya, and Joe is there to pick up the pieces. I kind of felt like Joe is the only one in this book who puts effort into courtship. Even by the end, I didn’t really feel Tanya’s love for Joe. I also had issues with his professionalism. Things get clouded between them as Joe goes from male model to physical lover. Joe gets frustrated (with good reason) at Tanya because he loves her and yet he only sees her looking at him as a model. But he explodes at her at a public event, and it just seemed really immature. He even thinks to himself that she might shun him because they are each of a different race, which seemed to come out of nowhere in the story. All of these issues are deep ones, and I think reasonable to question, yet needed much more time to be explored. I think this novella offers a good start to a relationship, but I wasn’t convinced of the romance. Joe felt too immature and Tanya too wrapped up in her career to appreciate what Joe is to her.

My Review:
Whoa, this book starts off with a seriously erotic sizzle. I loved the way it just jumped right in there...that first scene was incredibly HOT! mmm, Joe....

Joe is a paid nude model for Tanya, an artist who works with paints on canvas. She's extremely serious about her art...she does it full-time, lives with little else besides art supplies, and she has a patron. It's hard to divert her attention away from it. When Joe realizes she's having issues getting her paintings to work for her, he suggests she take a different approach to his body...using her senses rather than her eyes to explore and define him. Yep, it gets pretty erotic pretty quickly from there and I loved it.

Joe has been fighting an attraction to Tanya which has been growing for months. What he doesn't realize is that she's fighting the same attraction. She stares at his gorgeous naked body for hours on end....there's definitely an attraction. But for Joe, it definitely goes deeper than just physical and he's trying to show that to Tanya.

The whole artistic side to this book was amazingly well written. Every scene and Tanya's process in creating her paintings, I could completely see in my mind's eye. It was really gorgeous exploring Joe's body through her in this book. There is definitely a sexual edge to it all, but beyond that, this book is truly a glorification of the male form. I loved watching Tanya's process as she painted and discovered Joe.

On the other side is Joe. While Tanya focuses on him in the purely physical side, he has hours on end to watch her with her passion and he likes what he sees. He is such a fabulous character. I loved his insight into her and his description of his favorite painting of hers. He's a fabulously sexy character....both inside and out.

This is a book about art and it has an artistic flair to it in the wording and the imagery. Overall, I really liked that feel of it, although I'll admit there were a couple of paragraphs at the end that almost seemed over the top in the way that they were worded. It was enough to take me momentarily out of the story there at the end. But overall, it was a really fabulous read. I fell in love with Tanya and Joe and now only wish that I could actaully buy one of her paintings of him. ;o)

I liked it, but I didn't like it as much as I expected to. I liked Joe, I liked Tanya, and I liked Joe and Tanya together, but... I don't know. Maybe because I don't recall finding out how Joe earned his income, besides modeling for Tanya, that is. I'll probably go back and try to see if I missed it because it'll drive me nuts otherwise.

This book was just ok. I found Joe to be a really likable character but unfortunately nothing else about this story really stood out to me and grabbed my attention.
