Stuart The Bug Eating Man

Rate this book
The Tiny Twisted Tales are a collection of short stories and poems from the rather strange mind of Calvin Innes.

Each Tiny Twisted Tale is about another weird, scary, wonderfully gruesome character, from people who eat bugs, to tiny toga-wearing goblins. Each book is packed with dozens of Calvin’s quirky illustrations.

Stuart The Bug Eating Man is about a man with an unusual taste for all things creepy and crawly. He likes nothing better than munching on a centipede sandwich or guzzling down a tall frosty glass of liquidized slug. Unfortunately his family don’t share his taste in snacks.

Stuart would eat bugs,
with his fork and with his knife.
Much to the disgust of Harriet, his wife.

He’d munch them, and crunch them,
legs and all.
While they’d wriggle and squirm
and scurry and crawl.

My 7 yr old thinks this book is hilarious. Whilst reading it he giggled and I said the equivalent of yuck, gross, disgusting, Ewwww and icky, especially when it came to Stuart drinking liquidized bugs.(*Shiver*)
It is the perfect book for children who love any kind of insect or bug and think things like boogers, slime and worm sandwiches are entertaining.
I count my son amongst those children, in fact he was highly interested in whether Stuart would be eating any really hairy spiders and if so did I think they were crunchy.*sigh*
The text is written in two sentence rhymes per page. Reading age around 7yrs upwards and advanced readers. The text is also kept fun and simplistic with words that children of that age will understand and relate to.
The Illustrations are what make this book so much fun. It brings those simple words to life.
Seeing Stuart hang his head out of train window so he can catch bugs in his mouth or seeing him drink a tall glass of super yummy liquid bugs with a straw.
Have I mentioned how totally yuck this book is?
The Illustrations are in black and white. Personally I think it helps the child focus more on the words, but I do believe that this book in colour would be an absolute monstrous delight.
It is perfect for the reluctant reader, well if they like disgusting things that is. The child becomes so engrossed in all the bugs and ensuing laughter that they forget that they are fulfilling the task of reading.
It would make a great scholastic book.
I received a free copy of this book for my review.

Stuart liked eating bugs. The squirmier the better. Sadly, his family didn’t share his unusual taste. His wife wanted him to get a job but Stuart didn’t know what to do. He never went to school and he has no talent other than eating bugs. Stuart finally realizes that being himself and doing what he likes is the perfect answer (even if it is kind of gross).

I am not a fan of gross-out books, but somewhere in all the bug-eating in this book is a nice message about believing in yourself. There are illustrations on each page of bugs or Stuart eating bugs (**shiver**) that went well with the story. The number of words on a page is small and I think younger kids and reluctant readers would love this book. The story is told in simple rhyme that doesn’t always flow the best, but is fun to read. The message of believing in yourself no matter what others think, is a good one. This is a great book for boys! “Stuart the Bug Eating Man” is part of a series called the “Tiny Twisted Tales” series, where each book can stand alone and be read out of order. The other titles in the series are- Pale Henry (about a kid who is afraid to go outside)and Jenny about an 8-year-old werewolf hunter.
All the books in the series are about whacky/odd characters, but they also have a nice message in each book too. I recommend these books to kids 7+.

**NOTE I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Book number one of the Tiny Twisted Tales is Stuart The Bug Eating Man - a tale about Stuart who loves to eat bugs, any kind of bugs. He spends all day collecting the most awful and ugly insects and delights in chomping them down, accompanied by a glass of liquidized slug. Stuart's wife and children are horrified by his behaviour and just want him to get a job and be a normal husband and father. One day Stuart has a light-bulb moment and his idea allows him to carry on eating bugs, but also to provide handsomely for his family.

Each one of the Tiny Twisted Tales are wonderfully produced. Calvin Innes has such an imagination, just perfect for small children who really enjoy reading about yuk and slime and all things horrid. These stories are not only very entertaining, but are a perfect way of introducing poetry to children, making it funny and accessible and sometimes downright gruesome. There is no doubt that Calvin Innes' illustrations add so much to the books - each one is so precisely drawn and the cartoon characters suit the stories perfectly.

I will enjoy sharing these stories with my little nephew, he will adore the silliness. These books make you smile just by looking at the front cover, you will continue to smile right through to the last page.

This story is not for the squeamish so it's perfect for primary aged children! Listening to my daughter reading to my son had my stomach churning as Stuart chomps his way through a range of insects. Reading it myself and seeing the illustrations made it worse!

Much to the disgust of his wife Harriet the eponymous Stuart just can't resist eating bugs and drinking slug juice... Each little verse in the story is accompanied by an appropriate cartoon with plenty of creepy crawlies.

Stuart turns his unusual habit into a job by coming a pest controller! The book shows how to make something gross into a money making venture. I just hope my children don't try to follow suit...

I am sure this will appeal to most young readers or even some older ones. Think I will leave the bugs to the children though..

My daughter is five almost six years old and she loves to read. When she was given Stuart The bug Eating Man she sat on the sofa and quietly read the book to herself and all I could hear was little chuckles coming from her every now and then.
The book is a rhyming book about Stuart who loves to eat bugs, the wriggly the better. His wife wants him to get a job and he comes up with a great idea, a pest control man.
This was a really funny little tale and a very quick read, brilliant for kids.

An hilarious book that will have most kids in fits of giggles as well as thinking Stuart should be on 'I'm A Celebrity'. The book also shows kids how to make use of their talent even if the rest of the world think its gross, not everyone is the same but some one will see your talent shine through. Kids we read this book with loved it, especially the boys.
