About the author

Through her global travels and explorations Jacqueline DeCarlo became convinced of the benefits of Fair Trade to both producers and consumers. Believing that Fair Trade offers a sustainable and empowering framework for understanding consumption and trade, Jackie travels throughout the United States determined to help educate other consumers about Fair Trades power and potential. She was the director of the Fair Trade Resource Network from 2001 until she joined Catholic Relief Services in 2005, where she serves as a Senior Program Advisor. Jackie resides in Washington, D.C. and in addition to her first book regularly posts to her blog, Fair Trade Beginners."

“Một dollar, một bảng Anh hay một đồng Euro là một lá phiếu kinh tế. Hàng ngày, người tiêu dùng phải đưa ra những lựa chọn về cách họ tiêu tiền như thế nào và thực thi quyền lực kinh tế của họ. Khi người tiêu dùng đưa ra những quyết định có ý thức về việc làm thế nào để chi tiền mua những loại hàng hoá không dựa trên sự bóc lột sức lao động, sự tàn hại môi trường hay sự đồng hoá về văn hoá, cũng là lúc họ đang bỏ phiếu cho một thế giới mà họ muốn sống trong đó. Và họ đang tham gia vào việc kiến tạo thế giới đó.
Tuy nhiên, giống như thành ngữ: “Cá trong hồ nước không biết rằng chúng ướt”, người tiêu dùng thường không nghĩ đến các phương thức trao đổi mà họ sử dụng để đổi sức lao động lấy tiền, hoặc dùng tiền thành toán cho bữa tối hay một đôi giày mới. Em thích cách đặt vấn đề này của Jacqueline, một cách tiếp cận không chỉ áp dụng được với thương mại công bằng mà còn có thể áp dụng với nhóm doanh nghiệp xã hội nữa. Trân trọng những nỗ lực của tác giá nhằm truyền tải kiến thức này theo một cách gần gũi và thân thiện nhất cho người đọc phổ thông.

A well written book about the history, current practices, and the future of FAIR TRADE. The author provides a guide for beginners, and stories of real people engaged in what seems, a very logical business model for commerce. FAIR TRADE is about making sure the actual producers, and not multiple middle-men, are the ones getting a majority % of the profit generated by their products.
Although it sounds logical, it appears from the chapters that it is an uphill battle to implement. The author does describe the problems and explains how a lot of organizations and grass roots movements have helped solve the problem.

My take on this is that fair trade is probably the right thing to do, but it won’t happen on a large scale until governments of various countries overwhelmingly and consciously act on it. The current impact of fair trade practices described by the author is very heartening and positive.

If you're interested in Fair Trade this is a handy must read, it's a good introduction and sets out clear reasons why Fair Trade is the way forward, the arguments are convincing and it even bravely attempts to address some of the criticisms levelled at Fair Trade. A good, quick read for those who are interested.

A solid, well-rounded introduction to the Fair Trade movement. There are a lot of other issues and questions that the author touched upon that I would have liked her to go into in further detail, however, I believe she intentionally didn't in order to keep this a "Beginner's Guide".
