December 26, 2024I read it (again) purely out of nostalgia reasons. BM used to be one of my favorite books >35 years ago, when I was a small kid (7-8 yo). Just so you can understand the context, Poland was still a communist country, and the selection of books (especially ones from the West) was not super wide, but Karl May was very popular and generally available - even if under changed titles (!), translated by unknown individuals (!), and published as stapled notebooks printed on low-quality paper (!). For me, those books were not just a reservoir of fascinating adventures but also ... a way to learn English - some sentences were put in original form, with translations in the footnotes, so I kept coping them to a separate notebook & memorizing the whole sentences :)
OK, so you get my idea - I only wanted to check - how much fun is Karl May today, when I'm way older, my taste (for books) has evolved & (probably) my expectations are a tad higher. Let's see ...
First of all, this is really disturbing, but it's not that I could remember the general story - I could also recall all the names (even the more tricky ones like Iltschi, Hatatitla, Yuvaruva or Mungwi Eknan Makik - sorry for the potential typos) and even the whole passages from the book (e.g., about the "higher gentlemen" or Hum revealing himself to Cas & Has). Well, I read BM several times when I was a kid, but that was plenty of time ago ...
Anyway, about the book itself:
- first of all, it was written >100 years ago, one can definitely feel the differences between the "then" style and what we're used to these days - but TBH it didn't affect my pleasure from reading much, however ...
- ... you need to know one thing about KM's style: he's totally idolizing his heroes (Old Shatterhand, Winnetou) - they are literally perfect, don't make mistakes, their intentions are crystal clear, and their motives are always righteously lawful. They don't feel like real people at all and that MAY be annoying unless you accept this convention
- the story itself ain't bad - it's more or less logical, has a good pace, and there are no slowdowns (except maybe of tirades made by Hobble Frank - they used to be far more funny in the 1980s ...)
- one may be worried about racist language or statements someone may find offensive these days - well, I don't ;) but I also want to be straightforward with you - there'll be a few bits of that (mostly related to Chinese workers) - my suggestion is to apply common sense and try to understand the historical context
So, in the end:
1. YES, it's still a classic
2. YES, it's still fun
3. NO, I can't imagine TV series made upon that today
4. I'm not so sure if modern kids would appreciate this one as much as I did

Leider einer der schwächeren Romane vom lieben "Scharlih"

Einer der schwächeren Outputs des guten Karl und definitiv der schwächste aus der Reihe der bei Spemann erschienen "Jugendromane". - Zwei Sterne für Story und Komposition.
Was wirklich ärgerlich ist, ist der hier explizite Rassismus gegenüber den Chinesen - die "Chinesenlawine" hätte lustig sein können, hätte man sie eben nicht in diesen Kontext gestellt und am besten überhaupt keiner Natio-Ethnie zugeordnet.
War ein Re-Read meinerseits nach langer Zeit - und das erste Mal, dass ich das Original gelesen habe. Verändert ist beim Karl-May-Verlag vor allem das Ende, das ausnahmsweise im Original einmal nicht brutaler ist, dafür leider erzwungener wirkt. Überhaupt scheint das Schlusskapitel (Orig.) nur hinzugefügt worden zu sein, um noch schnell den anfangs mit viel Humor und TamTam eingeführten Strang um "Timpes Erben" zuende zu führen.
Zahlreiche Plotholes und unlogische Wendungen runden das Machwerk ab.
Einen halben zusätzlichen Stern gibt's von mir für die beiden Timpes und v.a. den Hobble-Frank, der hier auf seinem absoluten Höhepunkt ist und das einzige wirklich Highlight des Romans darstellt. Oft hat man den Eindruck, dass May ihn (eine der vielen Inkarnationen seiner selbst) ellenlang plaudern lässt, um mit der Handlung nicht weiter machen zu müssen - oftmals gegen Old Shatterhand (weitere Inkarnation) oder den hier mit OS nicht übereinstimmenden Erzähler (quasi nächste Inkarnation); kann auf die Dauer etwas ermüdend sein, aber nicht so sehr wie der Roman selbst.
2,5 Sterne kann man hier nicht geben - also runde ich auf drei auf, schließlich handelt es sich um Karl May mit vertrautem Personal, man kann sich hier schon wohlfühlen.
Fazit: Lieber einen anderen der Jugendromane Mays lesen und nur zu dem hier greifen, wenn man sie alle kennen will. Für den am Gesamtwerk Interessierten natürlich dennoch unentbehrlich - und in dem großen Rahmen gibt's denn auch wirklich Schlimmeres.

Tuhle mayovku si z dětství nepamatuju, takže jsem se na ni docela těšil, ale bohužel mě zklamala. Jednoduchý příběh líčí osud náčelníka Komančů Černého mustanga, který společně se svým vnukem a menší armádou indiánů brání svoji zem před stavbou železnice a lačnými zlatokopy. Plány na obranu rodné hroudy ale zmaří duo kazisvětů Shatterhand-Vinnettou (a parta komických nohsledů), kteří navíc zničí Mustangovo kariéru velkého náčelníka, takže v závěru knihy zešílí.
Tohle je samozřejmě alternativní čtení knihy, autor jednoznačně stojí na straně Šárlího a rudého bratra, přičemž jakékoliv nároky Komančů na obranu kmenových držav odbyde jednou jedinou větou Shatterhanda, která tak nějak zapadne ve víru příprav na konečnou likvidaci Černého mustanga "Koneckonců jsou tady doma, na svém území... a brání se. Pochopitelná věc."
Takže smůla, musíte fandit kolonizátorům a jejich přisluhovačům, kteří sice milostivě nechají Komanče naživu, ale oberou je o všechno, včetně náboženské medicíny, takže jako vydědění trhani smutně bloudí prérií a žerou syrové dýně, zatímco jim za humny staví cestu pro železného oře. (Patrně nejlepší kapitola celé knihy.)
Taky jste v těchhle jednoduchých příbězích vždycky fandili gaunerům? :)
Na knize jsou tak vlastně zajímavé jen dvě věci. Za prvé ilustrace Zdeňka Buriana, které prostě zbožňuju. A druhá je douška v úvodu "Karel May: Černý mustang: volně vypráví Jiří Bernard". Nikoliv překládá, ale volně vypráví. Což je v případě mayovek docela podstatná věc. Před pár lety jsem takhle ve snaze procvičit svoji bídnou němčinu četl Vinnettoua v originále a nestačil jsem se divit. Komunističtí cenzoři totiž tohle dílo celkem masivně zredigovali, zejména pak křesťanské aspekty vyprávění, ze kterých zbyly jen filmové zvony ze Santa Fé. Něco podobného se tedy patrně stalo i v případě Mustanga, kterého "převyprávěl" Bernard (pseudonym Vítězslava Kocourka, jehož skvělá Vzpoura na Bounty také vyšla v edici KOD). Takže kdo ví, jaký je vlastně příběh v originále? Třeba se to někdy dozvím, až se k německé verzi zas jednou dokopu.

Първата книга на Карл Май, която прочетох. Приключенското чувство, което усетих, докато я четях завинаги ще остане в мен.

Ilustrace to má pěkné, příběh už je o trochu slabší. Jakože, pořád mě to bavilo, minimálně ta krádež zbraní hlavních hrdinů je zajímavý nápad.
Jenže, jak už to tak u Mayovek bývá, a jak to i níže spousta lidí zmiňuje, jde to moc snadno. OS a Vinnetou každého tajně vyslechnou, odhadnou jeho záměry až do třetího kolene, a chraň Bůh, aby jim něco nevyšlo. Teda je pravda, že to nevyjde na 100% (Úplně se mi v tomhle příběhu nelíbil závěr.), ale i tak jsou pánové dokonalejší než dokonalost sama. Ještě že je takhle máme rádi. ;)
Jo a taky musím ještě zmínit ten překlad nebo co to je. Jiří Bernard to nepřekládá, on 'volně vypráví'. Jak a proč se to stalo, to radši nehodlám ani zjišťovat. Každopádně je vidět, že ty knihy pořád překladatele střídaly - třeba Tetku Drollovou v každé knize od Maye berou trochu jinak. Jednou je to "Droll přišel", příště "Drollová přišel" a potřetí "Drollová přišla". Tak třeba to čtenáře aspoň udrží ve střehu. :D

This is truly one of the greatest books.
I initially suspected that this was a toilet paper brand.
But, then I read it, and I found it to be one of the greatest paperbacks of the century. I also found it to be quite absorbent for the tougher stains.
Initially, I was not convinced after seeing that it was made in 1916, and also because there was no talking dog.
But, I was instantly attracted to it after I realized that it was a book about the wild west.
This is a book about trapping and shooting people, which I suspect proves to be invigorating for a large demographic.
I give this book 1 star because 5 of them would collide together and form one star, or a massive explosion.

Čierny mustang, kniha od svetoznámeho spisovateľa, ktorá pojednáva o dvoch bratrancoch, ktorí sú na ceste za ukradnutým dedičstvom, pričom po ceste stretnú famózneho Old Shatterhanda a Winnetoua.
Po pravde, od tohto som nečakala doslovne nič. Nie žeby som chcela znehodnocovať svetovú klasiku, len to proste nie je môj šálok čaju. Neberiem názor, že Karl May je spisovateľská špička, len proste ja sa neviem stotožniť skoro so žiadnou klasikou, s výnimkou Jacka Londona.
V podstate príbehu veľmi nemám ani čo vytknúť. Bol približne taký, aký som si ho prestavovala, ale tam to asi končí. Áno, knihu som dočítala, miestami ma aj celkom zaujala, ale nemôžem povedať, že by som v najbližšej dobe siahla po nejakom inom diele od Maya.

An interesting book that explores Winnetou's and Old Shatterhand's adventures throughout the wild west. This one follows the story of the Black Mustang's Comanche tribe launching an attack on the railroad campus, as well as the chase that follows.
Much weaker than the original series, but an interesting read nevertheless.

Iskra obecna w trylogii obecna, tylko taka jakby przytłumiona.
Szkoda, że główny zły jest takim nieudacznikiem.
Old Shatterhand lub Winnetou poradziliby sobie z nim w pojedynkę, a tu działają w duecie. I chyba się trochę nudzą.

Klasická Mayovka, která mě vrátila do dětství. Vtipné, míle a s napínavým dějem. Mezi mých top 5 Mayovek bych ji ovšem nezařadila, autor určitě napsal i lepší příběhy.

Klassische Wild-West Erzählung mit Old Shatterhand und Winnetou. Unterhaltsam geschrieben aber mit der May typischen Mischung aus Deutschtümelei und Rassismus. Daher heutzutage nur noch mit erheblichem Maß an Fremdschämen zu lesen.

Auf dem Buch steht zwar "Der schwarze Mustang und andere Erzählungen", es handelt sich aber um eine durchgehende Geschichte.

A fun short read set in the fictional West created by May. Really enjoyed it and recommend it to everyone who likes May's books and isn't looking for something very long.
