Life sucks... And then you get turned into a werelion...
Curvaceous, blonde bombshell Maya Josephs is looking for a little action to take her mind off of her recent break-up. Crazy werecats or not, an evening at Genesis is exactly what she needs. And when she meets the hotter than hot, super-sexy owner, Alex O'Connell, the alpha lion shifter is just the man to fit the bill for a one-night stand.
Dumped like a rotting piece of meat by her ex, Maya is on the prowl, fixin' to do whatever it takes to get herself a piece of the gorgeous furball. Besides, what's the harm in a girl having a little bit of fun?
I read this book as part of the Shifter Romance Boxed Set. This was an unapologetic hilarious read. It was sexy and silly and never took itself seriously. There was rude language, WereLions, tons of sex, and one seriously sassy plus-sized woman.

There was not a lot of romance, though it is technically a paranormal-romance... Id say it was more of a Sexy Shape-Shifter Comedy. I like it for what it was. If you're looking for substance and romance... this is probably not for you. But if you need an amusing and unique read for an evening, go pick it up! It was short, and you can buy it was part of a 99¢ Boxed Set with ten other stories, so I say Go for it!

It was a short, fun, erotic read.

Alpha Alex O'Connell is anxiously waiting to participate and oversea the mating frenzy that occurs every few months and if lucky a pregnancy occurs. However, Alex doesn't need an unaware human entering the premises and plans to shoo her away immediately until he catches her scent.
Maya Joseph has an itch she needs scratched, she has been told about the orgy that will occur and figures it is the perfect time for a one night stand. Alex looks like a perfect candidate for her, but Maya has know clue that the sensual bite he gave her during sex is about to turn her world upside down.
Funny, seductive, and a heck of a lot of fun. Loved Alex, he seems so unsure about his mate. Maya is a hoot, she is unpredictable and determined. Great book.
I'm not really sure of the details on how this ended up on my Kindle other than my babes Ange and Sarah got this for free awhile back from Amazon and we were going to BR it at some point. I decided to DNF the Accidental Alchemist, I needed something short to fill the rest of my night. So, here we are. Turns out this was kind of awesome. I wouldn't necessarily peg myself as a were-smut-lover, it is a specific niche, but I'm glad I gave it a try. I spent the night giggling, blushing, and totally enjoying all the things.
First up, Kyle does not mess around and you are not going to find a lot of wooing and romance here. Literally, the first page, third paragraph he's talking about banging the girl that walks into his club. Snort. Naughty sex ensues a whopping 7 pages later. He does all sorts of macho manly bullshit that typically sends me over the edge into feminist rant land, but not this time. I like smut that doesn't take itself too seriously, and Kyle hit the mark here.
I also think a shorter book can get away with a little more nonsense when written with a sense of humor, and this is exactly that. The sex is good, the characters are funny, it's got a great pace to it, and doesn't drown you in gross. Looking for a little campy-smutty-quirky fun read, this is it! I also really love books like this as pallet cleansers, it resets your mind so you can go back into reading something a little heavier. Good thing she's got a whole bunch more to read!
I liked the premise of Celia Kyle's first book in the Ridgeville series. I like that it's set in NC (though we only here one reference to it being in NC). I like that there is the potential for some fun/different animal shifters than we've seen in other books. So why less than three stars...since you asked:
The BAD:
Damn something about the heroine was annoying. She went from being heartbroken, to trying to justify hoeing around for one night, to angry about (which lasted about an hour), to fully accepting the fact that her life had inevitably changed overnight. Well damn, I wish I was that well adjusted. The story went quick so I know we can't stay on anything for a while but still, some sort of righteous indignation NOT coupled with horniness is warranted.
I also didn't like that most of the book, at least half involved sex scenes. They were just so damn loooooong.
The UGLY:
Something about the way it was written turned me all the way off. I found myself rolling my eyes. I like light, humorous PNR. This was straight up fluff.
I'm going to continue reading: 1. because I bought a box set for .99 cents and 2.because I really want to like to series therefore my rounding up to three stars than rounding down to 2, and 3. I love shifters.
This was a pretty good story and I liked Maya and Alex. The story was pretty typical PNR fair as far as story line goes but it was infused with a bit of humor and outrageousness that kept me interested.
Maya is a BBW that's nice and has a bit of spirit. She was recently in a relationship with a guy who sounds like he was rather unadventurous and didn't treat her very well. Now she wants forget about the breakup and to do this she's decided to indulge in a one night stand. Maya goes to a club where a woman she knows tells her she's sure to get some action. Maya think she's going in to something like a swingers night at a shifters club when in reality it's their mating festival.
Alex is a lion shifter and the Prime (alpha) of their pride. He's secure in his leadership and is overseeing the mating festival taking place at a shifter owned bar (people know shifters exist in this world but most people don't know who the shifters are). He's surprised to see a human woman walk in that's not one of the pride's human "familiars" and no other humans should be there. He has he brought to his office, intending to throw her out. Plans get changed when he realizes that she's his fated mate.
Maya gets to the bar and is surprised that so many men seem interested in her. She's a BBW (or as she calls herself, fluffy) and doesn't usually have men appreciating her attributes so well. Her last boyfriend certainly didn't. She ends up escorted to an upstairs office and there she meets Alex. She sees him and is all "here kitty, kitty" (in her head of course) because she wants him badly. He seems mad at first but as he breaths in her scent he seems to have a harder time pulling back and soon they're on each other. They end up in bed together and while Alex doesn't tell her she's his mate, he does get her to promise to stay the night and let him feed her breakfast the next morning. She should have lived up to her promise because Alex bit her during sex which starts the transformation process for her...into a lioness. She leaves and Alex realizes a smidge too late and is frantic to find her. He finds her before anything bad happens but not without some unexpected help and even then it's a close call. Alex messed up majorly and has to do some grovelling to get back in Maya's good graces. Fortunately for Alex, Maya's lioness is all for claiming her mate so it doesn't take too long before their making up and starting their HEA together.
I enjoyed this story. Alex and Maya made a good couple and the story was fun and kept me interested throughout. I'm looking forward to trying more of this series. I'd recommend this story. :D
The "Ridgeville" series has the big three-erotic romance, shifters, and humor. Throughout the series, Maya (the heroine of "He Ain't Lion"), offers up rollicking "Maya-isms". Having read the series, my all time favorite words of wisdom are "Live by the three 'F' rule: If they don't fuck you, feed you, or finance you, they don't matter." I just could not stop laughing!
The story: "Life sucks...and then you get turned into werelion. Curvy Maya Josephs is looking for a little fun after a bad break up. When she meets the hotter-than-hot, super-sexy bar owner Alex O'Connell, the alpha lion shifter is just the man to fit the bill for a one-night stand." And with that bit of the book, you can see the story just gets better. No wimpy, skinny heroine here-Maya is a bodacious, bad BBW.
Celia Kyle's books are kind of the "Reader's Digest Condensed Version" of Shelly Laurenston's shifter series. If you've never read her, start with "He Ain't Lion"! It's short in length, but can be bought as a set very inexpensively; go ahead and buy it that way-you won't regret it.
MARCH 2014 UPDATE:
Some books just never get old! I love to re-read Celia Kyle's books and recommend them to anyone who will listen to a raging readaholic...
Re-read: 10.08.2016 *Might contain spoilers* The awkward moment I had forgotten I had read the book before.... Probably because I didn't have internet, and couldn't see here on Goodreads if I had indeed read it before. Anyways, so I ended up with a re-read of He Ain't Lion. I completely understand why I had forgotten it.
It involves insta-love (though the words were not told), I didn't understand the use of the sentence: 'shit, fuck, damn and growl' that was used multiple times. And that 'grrr, roar, huff and puff' use? Umm, no thank you. Overuse of words, is what I think.
Also, it was so damn awkward (second time using the word awkward...perhaps it was an awkward book? Who knows...) when Alex stumbles while waking towards the bed...I mean, come on! He's a lion, for god's sake! His reflexes should have been better, I'm just sayin'.Guess it's understandable why I had forgotten I had read it before... Rate: 1.5 stars
As I mentioned in my Spotlight Sunday post I did a ton of binge reading this year. I would start a series and read it till have read all of them. Many are less than 150 pages so it's not too bad. The reading part was easy, the hard part was getting off my lazy butt and reviewing them all. As you will see on the blog for the rest of the year a mad dash of reviews.
The life of a lazy person!
He Ain't Lion is the first in the Ridgeville series and starts off the series with a bang. I loved it. Maya who's sad after a breakup wants to party with the big boys but gets a little more than she bargains for.
One second she's human, the next she's trying to eat her best friend and bunny shifter.
You will love Maya how throughout the series will crack you up. Her quick wit had me laughing often as I read the story. I really enjoyed her. I also loved Alex! He's hot and alpha what's not to love!
He Ain't Lion sets up the series perfectly and leaves you wanting more. Yes at times Maya can be over the top but for some reason you just like her. Like with so many of Kyle's series this has humor and is well-written. You almost forget that it's only 95 pages. I didn't feel like I was missing anything with the small word count. I think the great thing with shifters is you don't have to waste time with all the mess that comes before the forever. They pretty much know who's their mates right away.
He Ain’t Lion is a short story I picked up to getting over a book hangover by Surge, a deeply emotional, intense zombie apocalypse novel. While I got over my book hangover, I picked up a new favorite series! He Ain’t Lion turned out to be a hilarious short story, designed to make readers laugh – and maybe a little horny.
Recently dumped by her hurtful ex, Maya Josephs is looking for one night of dirty sex to get her ex’s harsh words out of her system. A “friend” pointed her in the direction of a Genesis, a shifter club known to have shifter orgies the night of the Gaian Moon.It was the perfect scenario; an orgy means one night of dirty, hot sex, right? Sure they do. . . except when you walk out mated to the Prime of the lion shifter, and turned into a were-lion.
Maya is a character comfortable in her own skin. She doesn’t have the many hang ups that go along with a curvy body in the 21st century. This book may have been written to give us a laugh with our sexy times, but it’s also inspirational as well. I loved her as a main character. She walks into Genesis wearing a stoplight red skin-tight dress, and everybody stops and stares (Although that may be because the full moon makes fur people sex crazed). She attracts male attention, and they attract hers as well. In my opinion, she was born to be furry. She just has that personality – and I love it!
Maya may have been turned on by all the alpha males, but when she meets Alex, Prime of the lions and owner of Genesis the insta-attraction (NOT love. . . I think) is palpable. He’s built, sensual, and ultimate alpha-male. . . why wouldn’t she have delicious, strings-free sex with him? Except he know she’s his mate, and won’t her let go so easily.
Alex seems a bit manipulative, but not in an abusive way. Plus, they get their happily ever after, the book is sexy, and I had a few laughs. What can I complain about?
This was a light, slightly cliché erotic story. I laughed, I gasped, I had a good time. Basically, I recommend He Ain’t Lion for those looking for a light read with a character driven plot. Thankfully, I loved the characters, so it made for a fun, laugh-out-loud times. Can’t wait to read the next story in the series!

I love this book. This was a cute little short story and a first time author for me. Maya goes to a local place that was highly recommended to her by a good friend to help feed her inner naughty girl and help recover from a recent break-up. She's immediately in her glory once she enters Genesis and sees almost all eyes are on her. It's like a kid in a candy store and Maya is going to shop! Just about to get her first drink of the evening, she approached by a handsome male and calmly asked if she would follow him. She's escorted to the owner's office and once she lays eyes on him, none of the other candy looks quite as tasty any longer. She's also very happy that she did not make a move on another just yet. Alex is the local lion clan alpha and owner of Genesis. When this beautiful human walks into his place on a night not meant for humans at all, he immediately wants her escorted out. The reason is to help protect the secret of shifters and protect any humans from harm during such an event that's full of shifters all ready willing and able to mate up a storm and shifters do tend to get a bit rough. But he cannot seem to ask this woman to leave, there's something about her, her scent that just calls to him and his cat to take and mark as his. This was a good start to a new series and I am looking forward to reading the next in this series to see what will happen next in Ridgeville. The whole rabbit shifter seems interesting.
I got this one free off Amazon. He Ain’t Lion is book 1 in the Ridgeville series by Celia Kyle.
I enjoyed this short erotica. It’s a Quick, Fun, HOT hilarious read! It was sexy and silly. There was rude language, WereLions, tons of sex and one sassy plus-sized woman. Not a lot of romance, so if your looking for substance and romance this is probably not for you. But if you need an amusing and unique read to get you through an evening, pick this one up!
I blame Ange for making me download this one! It was supposed to be a buddy read with her & Erica but we lost track & Erica ended up reading it long before I did.
I'm really behind on writing reviews so since this is only a short story I'm not going to spend much time on this one. He Ain't Lion is a short and hot story that doesn't take itself too seriously and was fun to read.
There isn't much in the way of romance or character development, in only 60 pages you don't have a lot of time to get into the nitty gritty but there is instant attraction, a lot of hot sex and a HEA at the end. If you're looking for a palette cleanser & like them spicey you can't go far wrong with this one & I wouldn't actually mind continuing with the series at some point in the future
This is an paranormal, shape shifter, romance, book one in the Ridgeville Series. This can be a stand alone, but I recommend to read the other books in the series. The book does have some sexual content so I advise this book for adults. I adore Celia Kyle and her style of writing, she writes these books to be amazing. I love the full figured women with backbone, and she hasn't let me down in this book. This book makes me laugh so hard, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I adore the friendship that Maya has with her bestie. And her determination not to allow a ex to bring her down. When she refers to herself as acting slutty, she is meaning she knows she is doing something out of her ordinary, but she is ok with that... well one time, lol. I love she excepts herself unconditionally. And Alex wow, he is dreamy.... drool.
This is a short story about Maya Josephs whom is a voluptuous blonde, with an appetite for well, a night to distract her from her new status of being single. Not that he deserved her, yes, a little fun at a club called Genesis is what she needs. Its raining men... omg... sexy, werecats, muscles, did I say sexy? Can it get any better? Yes, yes it can. Alex O'Connell the owner of the club, can someone say Alpha, lion shifter, yes one night stand material.
Maybe a certain someone didn't appreciate her extra love handles.... but maybe this werecat will. Yes, she will have to make sure he is well aware she wants to make his cat ROAR. Here kitty kitty. Girls just wanna have fun, at least once in a while.
favorite passages:
"But wait, weren’t dogs the droolers?" "It seemed these men were into fluffy women." "Maya definitely wouldn’t return in six months, though. nope. Well, maybe." "Maybe she shoulda brought catnip along, as a peace offering or something." "o, she was all about Mr. Alex O’Connell and his bad self." "Good thing momma liked." "Yes, she had a good chance of winning the “Slut of the Year” award this time around." "She wanted to make him roar…:" “Uh, no, I’m a big girl. Besides, I know Tae Bo. I’ll be fine.” “You a**-sniffing, butt-crack licking, litter box-using f***hole." * (some might find the author's word choice offending) "Hah! Alex belonged to her now! Take that bi*****! * (some might find the author's word choice offending) "Yeah, sure, blah, blah, blah… and all that queenly stuff she’d no doubt have to do now." "God save Maya from every overprotective, pigheaded, butt sniffing, meddling men—even if they were lions." "Apparently, her lioness was just as excited as Maya was about Chunky Monkey ice cream." “C*** blockers don’t deserve to eat my ice cream. None for you!” <3 "Now, I’m thinking that ‘Lions Rule, Tigers Drool’ carved right here would be just perfect. How ‘bout you?” "Heh. You ain’t lyin’.”
Before I get to my review I just wanted to preface it this with a note. If your under eighteen, don't like coarse language or hard sex these books and this review are not for you. So, I stumbled across this series of books purely by accident one day. Shifter books are at the top of my list for genre of books I like to read. The thing is for the most part the books are about wolf packs. After a while when you have read a substantial quantity of them they start to get a little similar. So, I decided to do a bit of a search and see what other type of shape-shifter books were out there. That was how I found the Ridgeville Lions. The first thing that caught my eye about these books was the covers. The colours were eye catching and the men on the cover FUCK HOT!!!! I am going to admit I read this series of books out of order. The first book I found was Ball of Furry, which I started reading before I realised it was a series. I was extremely intrigued by a book in which a lion and rabbit get together. When I got to the end of Ball of Furry, I immediately purchased He Ain't Lion, because I just wanted more. You're Lion had been on my TBR pile for a few weeks now but it had to wait as I had a few other books I needed to read for reviews. When the opportunity came up to review all three books, I jumped at the chance. These books a hot well written romances. If you like your sex on the more erotic side, these are definitely for you. That means that these Lions fuck and they fuck hard. That doesn't mean there isn’t a good dose of emotion wrapped up in there, as well as a nice dose of humour. In book 1 we meet Alex O'Connell Prime of the Ridgeville werelion pride. Unbeknownst to him his mate is about to walk into his club and turn his life upside down. Maya who is only looking for a one-night stand gets a lot more than she bargains for when she can't resist the pull she feels to the sexy club owner. In book 1.5 Alex and Maya are, for all intents and purposes, a happy couple ruling their pride but when Maya finds out she is pregnant her hormones send her into a bit of a tail spin that ends with her fucking her mate hard and fast. In book 2 we get Carly’s story we met her in book 1 she is Maya’s best friend and a wererabbit to boot. She is trying to avoid the mating call of Neal a member of the pride but he pounces when she least expects it. Overall I give this series of books 4 out of 5 If you like a short sexy read then each of these books are for you.
I picked this up as a freebie to fulfill a cat shifter requirement for a challenge I'm in. While it wasn't a bad read overall, there were several things that kept it from being a better read for me. First, it is entirely too short! We see one 24 hour period in these character's lives, and it is a very confusing yet erotic day. The reader is given very little to no world building whatsoever, but clues are hinted at that there is a much bigger world than we are being allowed to see. The plot was laughable, and not in an amusing way, meaning that there really wasn't much of one. While the book was very descriptive, the characters came across as too accepting or high-handed to be really enjoyable. If the remaining books in the series were free, I might pick them up, but if I had to pay for them, I'd pass!
What a good shifter book! This is a short , yet very hot story! Maya is a human that basically sneaks into Genesis nightclub ( with the help of a spiteful female ) during the Gaian Moon, a time when the were's and there friends have sexual orgies , some in hopes of having cubs. Alex is the clubs owner and the Prime Lion, he sniffs Maya out immediately and has his second go to get her before the doors are locked and bring her to him, which he does. Maya is ready for her one night stand and Alex is more then willing to sex her up, down every which way around . Alex realizes she's his mate and does what he needs to satisfy her and keep her. What happens next had me rolling on the floor laughing! Buy this book , you'll enjoy it as much as I did!
I picked up a bunch of these books because they sounded like fun. And this one definitely was lighthearted. It was also >50% sex, which I wasn't expecting. So, I'll read these judiciously as the mood strikes. At least the sex isn't completely gratuitous. And the main characters are likable. The heroine is happy with her curvy body, but does do some self-directed slut-shaming. And the hero thinks with his little brain, putting her in a position where her life is changed without giving her any idea of the changes until well after the fact. And then, it is a friend who tells her what happened, not him. He just drags her along without any preparation or guidance. She gets over it pretty quickly, so it's not traumatic for her. So, cute and light, but not a lot of depth other than the sex.
I really like this smexy shifter read, just wish there were more story. Most of the book is steamy sexin. Don't get me wrong, it is totally hot and well written, I just wanted more meat in the story.
Loved sassy Maya and he take no prisoners attitude. She meets her match in sexy Alpha Alex. They have a great dynamic and uber chemistry in the bedroom. The feelings will take more time. It is easy to see they are on the way to love but it is really too soon for undying confessions.
I loved their friends and pride members. Really hope we see more of them in future pairings!! Grayson, Carly and Ian all need mates.
Can't wait to see the story continue in the next novella!
There’s a lot of seriously hot sex, humor and a great story packed into this novella. For the length of the story I laughed quite a bit.
Alex is the typical hot alpha except that he’s fallible and admits it. I really liked him and his inner dialogues. The way he handled Maya and her spunky attitude was great. I also loved Maya’s pet name for Alex and was impressed with how well she handled what happened to her.
Without spoiling the story all I can say is this was a great quick read that left me hot and smiling. I will read You're Lion, a continuation of Maya and Alex's story.
...enjoy a rousing night of sexin' with the local shifters! ...get a kick out of a big, strong Alpha being taken down (metaphorically) by a human girl. ...don't mind when said Alpha marks his mate without telling her what's what. ...like it when newly changed werelion asserts herself.
Heh. I liked this one. Plenty of hot sex, a leader who definitely needs some alone time with his lady, and a happy ending. Niiiiiice.
The first book from the series was so short but intense. A very hilarious mating between Alex and Maya, made me laugh a lot and I guess this is what saved the book for me. There is not much to it except sex and claiming but the dialog made my day. My favorite:
Celia Kyle has these expressions that make all her situations and her characters funny. I am looking forward to the second story that I know will continue the action, or better said the character's life from this book.
This is a freebie and it's a lot better than I expected! It's only short and is an introduction to the series, but it's HOT, has strong H and h, and a solid story line considering it only 63 pages (or so, depending on your edition). I wanted just a bit more, but if PNR with a curvy blonde (plus size?) and superhot hunk are up your alley, definitely give this a go.
But apparently he is a lion. So why say he ain't? He's a lion shifter and so is the new lady in the bar. The book is one sex scene. If instalust and discussion of shifter morals and mates is what you want, fine. I prefer more romance and story in stories. Copious strong language from the start.
