Yet another great one from Osprey. Great easy to read info and history on Vikings and the illustrations are flat out amazing. Highly recomended for anybody interested in the Vikings as well as reenactors and SCA types!

2.5 stars. The usual short format Osprey book, well illustrated, covering the 8th to 11th centuries.
Apart from a sentence at the start and one at the end to say how the role of a hersir changed, it doesn't actually explain much about the role or position of them. Focuses mostly on weapons, clothing and armour, with a few paragraphs about some battles.

Having read my share of books from Osprey, I have come to two conclussions. First and foremost, one needs to keep in mind that booklets from Osprey are ment to be introduction to the topic they deal with. Second, quality of an individual Osprey volume depends on content and structure. This specific volume does a good job regarding the first of those two conditions. However, in an effort to cover as much ground as possible, the author insists on rapidly jumping from one unrelated topic to another and fails to provide a red thread that binds the material into a cohesive whole.

While this book has great detail about the arms and armaments of a Viking hersir, it assumes that the reader knows more about the Viking age then it gives. It alludes to battles, royalty, sagas, and other references that make you want to understand the Viking age better, but places them with know context or explanation.
