It took me way to long to read this book. I had no problems putting it down and I just had to force myself to finish it so I could move on to something else. The twist on how vampires were created wasn't enough to keep my interest. Several times I thought, "Oh, I think it's going to pick up now," only to have my attention held for 2 or 3 pages.

It needs editing or even proof reading would have worked better because the author got her facts a little mixed up, she was calling one twin the others name, missing words and used the wrong words like read for red. She does flash backs and at one point said in 1912 her mother gave her a hair pin when she was 10, then in the flash back to 1912 she was getting a corset put on and I'm trying to figure out if they tortured 10 year olds like that back then only to discover that she was 23???

The book just started getting good at the end because I don't think Ani handles her powers very well. I don't know if seeing her outcome would be enough to pull me in to read the next book.

*THIS BOOK WAS GIVEN TO ME IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW via FMB BLOG TOURS*

Janiera Eldridge introduces you to a whole new world of vampires. How they're made? Well, that's still a question left unanswered. There is a creator and the process is a secret. *shrugs* Dana and Ani are soul sisters. Dana is human and will live as long as her soul sister Ani, who is a vampire and was created by Donovan. Dana is immortal and will live as long as her soul sister is alive. But when Dana is drugged and attacked behind a club, Ani steps in to protector her sister and ends up killing a witness who sees her feeding from her sisters attacker and triggers Donovan to put an end to Ani and Dana.

Soul Sisters was a pretty interesting read, it definitely had it's flaws but if you could manage to look past them, then it was pretty good story that could definitely be better. I thought the whole idea for Soul Sisters is pretty danged cool, but with all the errors in the book, I found it very hard to read. There are different POVs but there is no distinct mention of a change until you actually realize that you're now reading from another characters POV. Ahhh. All my romance junkies out there. There is romance in this book, but it's very muted. Not too much spark going on, but the characters did show a bit of spark between them. Though, I do wish there was more umph and less uhh. lol My poor unfulfilled romantic heart.

I did get this book a few months back on Amazon while it was free & then when I got an email to participate in the blog tour, I figured why not knock out a book in my TBR pile and join the tour. So, with that being said, I read the version I got from Amazon (and not the copy sent for the blog tour) before it was pulled and there was quite a bit of spelling tragedies. As well as mixing up of characters. There were times when Dana would say something or think something and then it would shift as if Ani had said/thought it. Again, the throwing off of the POV. Very confusing. I'm on the fence with the characters. I liked some of them, and some of them I was wondering WTF. Donovan, the Creator, is supposed to be this bad guy, but I never really got a "tread-slowly-he's-dangerous" vibe off of him. Which made me skeptical when Ani, Dani and the rest of the gang were training to whoop some creator ass.

Towards the ending, I was building up to this awesome showdown between the Creator and Ani, Dana and the rest of the group. (Thought, I just finished watching The Walking Dead then jumped back into reading and was still in an ass kicking mood) Well, a lot of build up and training and then BAAAAM. It's over. That was not a good ending for me. It was like a whole bunch of teasing and building up and then it all stops. I was disappointed to say the least.

I think this book could definitely be something great, it just wasn't a wow factor for me. The book fell and rose quite a bit, it wasn't boring, but it didn't keep my attention and wasn't very satisfying. I was on the fence with the rating for this book. I'm going with 2 Tropical Drinks because it could definitely use some work but it was decent. Easy to read and a nice twist to vampires.

Dana became an immortal in the early 19th century. Though she is not a vampire--that would be the soul sister she helped create, Ani. But when Ani goes a little too far in protecting Dana one night, their creator does not approve...and he wants to destroy them.

Ani and Dana must come together with unlikely allies as they figure out a way to keep themselves alive.

This was quite a short book. It started off with a lot of promise that kind of fizzled for me as it went along.

The story is told with rotating chapters that go between Dana and Ani's life in the present, and her origin story in the past. I really liked this format, as it gave a deeper look into what happened to the girls and how they became immortals. Though, I can't say I understand the whole soul sister/soul brother process. This wasn't really explained too much and I believe the book could have benefited from that. But the premise was definitely a unique one, and I respect that.

As for characters, they aren't that deep either. The story is told in third person, and frequently hope from character to character's mind. Dana is kind of a square, boring girl. If I were immortal I would be having a lot more fun with it than she was! Ani is much more interesting. I love that she is passionate about things, and especially fiery when it comes to protecting her sister.

This being a self-published novel, there were several mistakes; left out words and misspellings. Normally that type of thing doesn't bother me but they were quite distracting here.

There wasn't too much action in the story, but what was there was done well. The main thing that disappointed me was the ending. There was all this build up to a big fight that just kind of didn't happen. The ending was quite sudden and left me with several unanswered questions.

Ms. Eldridge had some fantastic, original ideas for her novel, but in the end they just needed some more development.

I don't think we need to compare vampire stories with other vampire stories. Our society is so fixated on this OR that, can't it be this AND that. Baskin Robins has 31 flavors so can we....Smile
I truly enjoyed this book for exactly what it is a story about love and survival amongst woman, who happen to be Soul Sisters. They favor one another in appearance but are as different as night and day. But there is one thing they both agree on and that is the dedication and love they have for one another.

Soul Sisters pulled at my heart on several levels love vs. sisterhood, life and death, obedience vs. disobedience and light and darkness. The story moved from two different worlds and time periods, but not once is the reader left wondering where they are. The conflicts can cause a reader to stop only for a second to breath that's just how emotional the story can get at times.

You definitely want to continue on to find out what happens next, but continuing means saying good bye to characters who have become friends.
If you take nothing else from this book remember this no matter how different we are, on the inside we are ALL the same.

From the cradle to the grave, Ani and Dana!

* Thank you to the author, Janiera Eldridge, for allowing me to be a Early Reviewer on the JeepDiva Blog http://www.thejeepdiva.com. *

AUTHOR: Soul Sister is Janiera’s first published book. In my opinion, Janiera has the potential of someday becoming a great author. At this time, “in my opinion”, she has some improvements to make in providing her written work with the right balance of dialogue, action and adventure and details of events….”in my opinion”.

GENRE: Paranormal, Fiction, Contemporary fiction, Multicultural fiction, Urban fiction, Fantasy fiction

SETTING:
Harlem, New York to Europe and back to New York. Switches back and force between Modern Day and the 13th century

CENTRAL FEMALE CHARACTER: Twin sisters but only one is a vampire. The other twin however, has lived for as many years as her vampire sister.

CENTRAL MALE CHARACTER: For centuries he has always made it possible for people to live beyond their time. He can provide for them the riches of life should they so desire. The problem? He demands something from them that that money cannot buy.

SYNOPSIS: She married the man of her dreams. His life suddenly ended but her twin sister ensured that she would always be with her. She would always be her protector.

PARANORMAL: How does one live with a twin and yet that twin has a different need in order to survive?

CONTEMPORARY fiction: This book is not so much “romance” as it is “contemporary paranormal”. The major setting takes place in the modern day century. Spurts of having relationships is included but not the main thrust.

WHAT I LIKED: Actions starts towards the end of the book and leads to a cliff hanger. Whoa!

WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: While it is a great story overall, the book lacks depth. It does not pull the reader into the storyline. It is written with basic events occurring with very little detail description of moods, character and facial expressions. As an example, what was the shape of their eyes and mouth; were her teeth white and elongated as she saw the pulse beating in his neck; what was the reaction of the victim, did he scream; what did the door sound like as it opened, did it creak open?

Unfortunately this book gets (2) vrooms out of (5) Jeep Diva blog vrooms. The engine started but the tires would not roll. http://www.thejeepdiva.com/

WHY (2 ) STARS: Lacks depth. Reader is just dropped into one scene after the other.

I am so glad to be through with this. I don't mean that in a bad way. It's a good story, but it does have problems. I went into this with a "Cool! African-American Vampire Chicks!" attitude, since most YA books fail to focus on women of color these days, and the story did a great job of that there. And, it definitely leaves you wanting to read Book #2, out of curiosity. But, it does fail in some areas.
There are several punctuation mistakes, which seem to almost double towards the end of the novel, and the author sometimes confuses words and uses them as each other. Like "then" for "than" and "to" for "too". But, that's relatively easy to look past, till you see it happen a dozen+ times.
Also, the story keeps bouncing back and forth between present times (which I assumed were the 90s, since this seemed like a 90s YA book to me), and the early 1900s. So, if you are not taking notes, you will get confused from time to time.
-------------
I loved Bryson. He seemed so perfect for Dana, and then, even after she made the deal with Donovan, Bryson was killed off so soon. I have to agree with Dana in the fact that I believe Donovan had something to with Bryson's death. But, we never find out for sure or not.
I also loved that Ani and Deigo got back together, regardless of the fact that their lives were all going straight to Hell in a handbasket at the time. Those two seem like soulmates. I hope they stay together.
Also, I wish that Dana and Christian, the werewolf, had gotten together. It was so clear that Dana was crushing on him like a giddy schoolgirl, but was afraid to tell him because of the situation. I really home she tells him in book 2.
--------------
The one thing that disappointed me the most about this book was that a third (or more) of the story is spent building up to this huge fight/battle where Ani has to kill Donovan to become Creator. And, the book ended with no fight, just Donovan being a real pushover, letting Ani just take the ring and his position away from him as she killed him.
It's sad to build it up like that, and just let us down. But, I still somewhat enjoyed the story. On to book 2 now!!

Soul Sisters is a very interesting read. I have to say that the book grabbed me from the first page and kept me reading until the end. When I got to the end I needed to know what happens next but I will have to wait for book two. As I was reading this book two things stuck out to me, first what would you do for the love of your life? and second what would you do for your sister? These questions were answered for me as the story progressed and I loved how the author drew you in slowly giving you just enough info to hold you over to the next chapter where things started to come together.

Dana and Ani are twins soul sisters in every way. Dana is happily in love with her husband when tragedy strikes. She meets a guy Donovan who says he can help her husband but at a cost. Dana is so in love with her husband that she will do anything and agrees to Donovan's terms. Dana is about to find out that you don't make a deal with the devil unless you know what your getting into. What Dana gets in return is a twin a soul sister Ani.

Ani is nothing like Dana. Ani is adventurous and mischievous but she is a fierce protector of her sister. When Dana is attacked Ani kills the person who hurt her sister. What they don't realize is there is a witness and soon Donovan has sends word to kill the two sisters. Ani and Dana will have to fight Donovan and his minions. This is no easy task so Ani and Dana call for help. The fight that comes is crazy and swift and Dana and Ani will have to fight for their lives as well as the lives of their friends.

Will Ani and Dana be able to defeat Donovan? Will they lose their friends? Will they lose each other? This is a great read with lot's of action. This is a MUST read because it is totally different from the regular Vampire and Werewolf books I have read!

*****Gladys #XOXOtheNerdGirl #NerdGirlOffical Review:

I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I struggled with this review for a week after I read the book. So I re-read the book again. Twice!!! Looking for something that would spark something so profound and earth shattering that Janiera, who I believe has become an awesome fan of Nerd Girl would thank me for. BUT, as Melanie (Nerd Girl Vamp), knows I am not a fan of YES-MEN and people who follow the pied pipers melodic music. NOW don’t get me wrong please. This book isn’t bad. I just think it lacks a few things that me myself desire in a “first in a series” book.

World building and Character development is a huge factor for me. The concept of the book deserves depth. It’s intriguing, it’s alluring and it’s infectious BUT it was left flat. The whole storyline and plot was genius. Two “sisters” who look exactly alike but are not really sisters but share a soul to allow the HUMAN (Dana) to stay immortal and the VAMPIRE (Ani) is her protector though the years. Ani is reckless, her Master wants her “put down”, but if she dies so does Dana. If Dana’s life is threatened it’s up to Ani to protect her. So their plan is to get the Master…. Yes Yes Yes… A long run on sentence but the story line although basic is filled to the brim with emotional ups and downs; bonding and a huge dose of sisterhood. Lastly the mythology although different from the all vampire lore is compelling. I just wish one thing for any “first in a series” books. Give me depth, Give me world Building and give me character development.

I did enjoy this book. I do recommend it. It’s short and would be perfect for a palette cleanser

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. Early 1900's, Dana meets and marries Bryson and is very much in love until Bryson is in a hiking accident. He is at deaths door when Dana is approached by Donovan, a vampire, who tells her that he can save her husband if she gives him her soul. In return she will be immortal and get a soul sister, a twin, that is vampire and will always be with her. She will do anything to save Bryson and takes the deal, unfortunately Bryson is killed in another accident a couple of years later. This is when Dana first meets her twin soul sister Ani. Ani is devoted to Dana but has some self control issues that end up landing them in a load of trouble. Dana is attacked by a drunk man and Ani kills hime, problem is there was a witness. Now the counsel, headed by Donovan are coming to kill Ani. Due to the bond between them, if one dies, so does the other. They are over 100 years old and look 25 and neither of them is ready to die. The enlist the help of Ani's ex boyfriend and his werewolf friend along with a vampire who works for the councel but switched sides. They are in for the battle of their lives, literally. A quote from the book that I liked was "You shouldn't try so hard to be perfect, it isn't becoming of anyone." Words to live by. I liked this book, it has different ethnicities, species, and some cool twists. Having reviewed many books I appreciate the fact that the author concentrated on the story and didn't feel the need to describe every flower, door, and skyline, too much description drives me nuts and I start to skim. I didn't have to do that with this story at all. It's got an ending that will for sure lead to another book. Check it out, it's worth the read. WaAr

This is a unique premise with characters that are rarely seen in most of the vampire stories I have read. Additionally, the ‘creation story’ for Ani was very cleverly presented, and provided a pair of immortals who are inexorably connected in so many ways. The author shows great promise, dealing with characters that develop into fully realized beings while still providing a very clearly defined set of differences for the two sisters. Attitudes and responses are well delineated with a sense of reality that is easy to relate to, even though the situations the characters encounter are wholly unfamiliar to most readers.

Sadly, there were too many issues in the construct and presentation of the book that would not allow a higher rating. The book most certainly could have used another round with a professional editor, and at least one more Beta Reader. There are grammatical errors and some character contradictions where one sister’s name is quite clearly misplaced. Additionally, I had previously purchased a copy of this book before the opportunity to review arrived – and there are some fairly frequent and glaring formatting errors: left side justifications that are incorrect, some paragraph errors where one paragraph ends without warning and another starts, text formatting errors, etc.: severely impacting the reading experience. Sadly, the finished product did detract from the expectations and promise shown.

I would most certainly keep an eye out for other work by this author, in the hopes that future works take the need for editing and beta readers into account.

I reviewed a previously purchased copy of the book for purpose of honest review for Full Moon Bites tours. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This was a unique take on vampires, especially on their creation, the hierarchy and the way they are involved in society. It follows Dana, the main character, throughout her life in the 1800’s to the present day, alternating between now and then. I enjoyed the flashbacks, they enriched the depth of who Dana was and eventually, how Ani came into being and the relationship between the two as ‘soul sisters’. I liked the idea that if one died, the other would too, making the vampires vulnerable in a very interesting way.

Great storytelling! I was deeply invested in the characters and felt their heartbreak, their loss and their tribulations throughout the novel. Traditional vampire characteristics are used, which is awesome! I love the hardcore vampire stuff and am glad that this stuck to the violent nature they do possess when it came to feeding.

My only qualm was that kept it from being an easy 4.5 star read, the ending, OMG, that ending. There was just so much build up through the entire book, the dread, the shock, the fear−that anticlimactic scene at the end left me feeling just a tad bit dissatisfied. Not that it was bad, don’t get me wrong, I was on pins and needles hoping no one would die because I had grown quite fond of Ani, Dana and Diego, heck even Marcel at the end. I just wanted Donavan to burn, or something else, anything other than what happened! I’m an action kind of girl and for all the adrenaline I had coursing through my veins, I wanted a bit more of a fight.

Good thing there is a sequel, must know what happens next!

We first meet Ani and Dana in present day and learn that Ani is a vampire and Dana is human. Then, we learn that in 1912, Dana was married and her husband, Bryson, was dying. A man named Donovan approached her and made her an offer to spare his life. She agreed and Ani was created. The story switches back and forth between modern day and the early 1900's to give us good background on the two sisters. Ani and Dana's lives are now in danger and they round up allies to help them survive.

I enjoyed this story! It was a unique take on vampires and how they're created. I also liked the flashbacks since we were given bits and pieces of their story and I wanted to keep reading to find out more about them. Dana and Ani are very different but they get along well and watch out for each other. When I found out that Dana had been alive since the early 1900's and was still human, I was interested to learn how that was possible. I liked the pacing and felt that the plot moved along and kept my attention.

There is some language in this book, including two f-bombs. There is also light kissing and sex with no details. If you enjoy vampire novels, this is a series you will definitely want to check out!

* I received this copy for review from the author*

This book really took me by surprise! I wanted to read this book because I read my first "twin" book a few weeks ago and now that's all I want to read. So when Janiera contacted my sister asking us to review her book I was like awesome another "twin" book but I was like Vampires? I recently just read a book with vampires in it and while I was reading it I was like " Am I ever going to read a book that has a different concept of Vampires besides the usual they drink blood, sparkle in the sun light (that ones for you Janiera) , & Blah Blah BLAH! With all that said Soul Sisters is not your usual Vampire story.

In Soul Sisters you have Dana the human and Ani the Vampire who happens to look just like Dana and she is her Soul Sister and protector. Dani&Ani have lived comfortably well over 100 years

So, I am very picky when it comes to my vampire books. It's hard for me to just read a "by the numbers" vamp story that follows the basic plot line of pretty much every other vampire book out there. That's why 'Soul Sisters' by Janiera Eldridge was so refreshing. There is so much going on here, and so much of it new, or at least original. I love the idea of two sisters being immortal; one a vampire, one simply able to live forever, and yet linked for all eternity and kind of bound to one another. That's a story in itself, and then there are the added elements of going back in time for various origin stories and I always love that aspect of watching the sisters develop, but not age, through time. Add to that the core conflict of one sister having/wanting to save the other at all costs (for reasons you have to READ to find out!) and this book really fires on ALL cylinders!! If you are looking for something new and distinct in the vampire genre, look no further than Soul Sisters to satisfy all your genre needs!

Once I was left alone long enough, I couldn’t stop reading this book till the end. When Dana’s husband gets sick and it looks as though he isn’t going to make it, Dana makes a deal with her own devil Donavan and gives him some of her soul so she can save her husband. From her soul, Ani is created and is considered her soul sister. Without one the other would die and now have lived for over 100 years even after an accident claims Dana’s husband. They are two completely different personalities. Dana likes the low profile, while Ani can’t behave. Once Donavan gets word that Ani isn’t playing by the rules, he orders her to turn herself in and meet her death. They kick into action and meet up with an old flame, Diego who vows to help them fight the evils of Donavan and live. But can he help save them or will it be his end as well?
I want more of this series. It ended too abruptly for me so I know I’m going to get the next book. I really enjoyed this story Ms. Eldridge, thank you for sharing it with us.

A Review of Soul Sister by Janiera Eldridge

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this book for an honest review.

I appreciated the plot of this book - it is a very clever twist on the paranormal or vampire tale. The story, however, had potential in its telling for more description on the internal psychological conflict that must surely exist within each twin. There is also a need for further description to draw a reader into the scenes within the book.

As a reader, I do believe that this book is 'on to something', it needs to be 'fleshed out a bit more'. Well done to Janiera though on her imaginative application of the vampire tale in this novel.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book as it is not your normal run of the mill vampire book.
I loved the intrigue and strong story line it kept me turning the page until I realised I had reached the end and I hope there is a second book as I can't wait to see how Ani takes to being the creator and if anything develops between Dana and Christian and also to see what happens now that Ani has become the Creator.

Dana is human who has built a normal human life. As much as you can when she was born in 1912. After making a deal with an ancient vampire shortly after her marriage, she gave part of her soul to create a vampire – her soul sister, Ani. After a long journey over the years, the two now live together, best friends and greatest confidants, the siblings are enjoying their eternal lives in their own ways.

Except Ani’s reckless behaviour draws more attention from the powers that be. Until her passionate defence of Dana against an attacker leads to more public deaths the vampire leader refuses to ignore. He demands their deaths and can find them anywhere

This launches a battle to find allies, to find a place to hide which, inevitably, leads to its own revolution as the siblings are forced to take the battle to the enemy.

This book has an extremely unique twist on the traditional vampire tale. In this world vampires are created by taking part of the soul of a human and creating a vampire “twin”. They look very alike and they depend on each other to survive. If one dies the other dies – resulting in a vampire and an immortal human. While it’s clear that not every vampire/human twin has a close bond, Ani and Dana definitely do.

The book also focuses on Dana, the human of the pair, and her journey into this life. Her life as a human in 1912, her life with her family and then her husband – followed by how she first made the decision to give up her soul and create Ani, and how her life developed with her new sister. Her past is rich and really well built with a full sense of what set her on the path. So much so that I think I would have liked to see more of Dana’s past in between the present and the loss of her husband, just to see the character develop more.

It’s also pretty rare to see a book that focuses so much on a sibling relationship. That mutual affection, care and worry for each other still spaced with that very common frustration at the others actions. It’s a very natural relationship for the most part and underpins the book.

For a long time though, the book does seem to be spinning it’s wheels. We’re introduced to these characters but they don’t seem to be overly involved in anything except developing them. Even when the path is set, they then spend a lot of detailed time training all interspaced with odd little conflicts as one of the characters gets angry over something – which then disappears or fades away. The end of the book does pick up very well though, racing with plot and intensity towards the conclusion.

Unfortunately, while the book had wonderful things going for it, it was then badly let down by the writing. Firstly, it needed an editor. I understand this is a later edition and considerably improved on previous versions but there are still grammar and word issues that need correcting.

Beyond that, the book just didn’t flow for me, I found the language and, especially, the dialogue extremely stilted and unnatural, often bogged down with unnecessary explanation and exposition, too much telling rather than showing and an almost repetitive need to drive every point home. I think the best way to show this is with a quote:

“Her friend Tasha said loudly. She said it so loud it left her ears tingling. Dana knew it was her friend Tasha because of the extra drama she poured into saying the simple words.”

After this we get a long explanation of who Tasha is (a friend – which we already know) and this character never really comes up again. This kind of writing continues throughout the entire book, stilted, long winded and often unnecessary.

This story kind of feels like an origins story. You know, an origins story is like an introduction. Hou have the fun of introducing the characters and getting to know them, but that takes time. With the second one, you can just get on with it and have a rollicking good time. I love the fact that she changes from modern times to the past, which makes it even more an origins story.

The Writing
The writing in this book is really good. Props to Janiera for that! Sometimes I had the feeling there was a word missing in a sentence, but that was just 3 times or so and I don’t give a thing about that because of the awesomeness of the rest of the book.
The book reads really quick and it’s kind of short, but I don’t care. It’s still cool.

The characters
I love all the characters, but the one I love the most is Dana. I can see myself in her. She’d rather stay home, reading a good book instead of going out to a club or something. She’s a little shy in the beginning of the story. We learn about her past, so many many years ago and by that also the reason why she is in that situation in the present day.
The rest of the characters are also cool, although I think Donovan is a douchebag.

The vampires & other supernatural creatures
Because of the great amount of vampire books these days, I have to judge this book on that too because these guys have gone through a lot of transformations lately. From sparkly ‘vegetarians’ to spiritual beings with tattoos on their face that have to go to vampire school to murderous vampires out of the closet that have to drink fake blood out of a bottle. The image of these creatures that we used to have (mainly because of Bram Stoker’s Dracula) is long gone. Yes, I think it’s safe to say that most of us no longer see them as vicious creatures that scream ‘I vant to suck your blood!’. Some authors did a pretty good job at reinventing them, but others not at all. BUT Janiera did. The vampires are the kind of creatures that suck blood, burn in the sun and are pretty indestructible. You know, the vampires we know and love.
The werewolves here in this book are pretty much the same. As in many books, they don’t have to wait for a full moon either and they can change in a giant puppydog anytime they want. Which is fine with me. At least they don’t sparkle in the moonlight or something.

Love & romance
Believe it or not, romance is not the most important thing in this book. It’s refreshing, actually. Sure, there is a relationship and it’s really sweet, but it’s not the main thing here. I kind of got a love-triangle-vibe at some point, but I didn’t care in this story because, like I said, it’s not the main issue here. They are in the background. The only love that isn’t on the background is the love between the sisters. They love each other, although they don’t want admit to that sometimes. They fight sometimes and there are moments were they think they hate each other. So kind of what all bonds between siblings are like.

Conclusion
This is a cool, refreshing, original and badass story. It feels like an introduction, but that’s not bad. In fact, it’s really good. It means that more badassness is on its way in the second book. I don’t have anything negative to say except for the fact that it is kind of short. So good job Janiera and keep up the good work!

Light-years better than the Twilight Saga series. Characters with a real personality and not only this but also ones that each of us can relate too. Another thing I must highlight is the fact that Eldridge doesn’t make her characters fit the mold but rather opens up a new realm – coloured characters and this is a new/fresh and fantastic thing to see hero’s and heroine’s with a different backgrounds to the otherwise typical and over-represented characters.

The journey the characters and that we the reader go through isn’t a light everything is going to be alight one. There is a real serious threat at the core of this novel, there is real fear and raw emotions/passions – strain underlining the feelings of the character which very precisely border on what real life emotions are like. Eldridge does don’t shy away from exposing what is at the heart of her characters whether that is their lust/desire, their anger or the everyday battle that takes place within their soul and the transgression between these is an eloquently one.

A novel with a gripping plot and the 2 interlinked time period’s create tension and mystery. It stirs up our emotions and really makes us feel. There are moments that parallel with real life situations and emotions throughout this book which will really move you, you have to be a rock for it not to do so! I’d hardly ever cry at a book but there were points I was crying on the inside– I’m not going to include any spoilers. There were moments when my heart panged gleefully with joy and when my heart shrivelled with confusion, pain and anger. Moments of happiness and sadness are mixed together in a blending pot; moments where emotions spill into one another and just like in Shakespeare’s play’s a tense scene is followed by a anti-tension/comic scene – however there is no comedy here!

Let me tell you this before hand readers – you can’t run away from that fact that there is A LOT of tension in this novel whether it is in that scenario of life vs death, sisterhood or love. I wanted both to get to the end to find out what happens and at the same time I didn’t want it to end because I would have to part with the character which I had become attached to and fallen in love with.

Furthermore, the bound that exists between the sisters is a powerful one – that really strikes the reader at the core of the heart. I know it did this to me. I was fascinated at how real their relationship was and how the novel reveals to us the very building blocks of this and the way it moves us through their plight/journey as sisters.

The powerful force of conflict that exists is something that I can’t describe to you because it is something you have to personally experience by yourself. Consider yourselves warned when I say that it will consume you – it will split you - on who to root for, who to hate and who to aim your anger/frustration at. You will struggle to pick whose side you will be on!

If you don’t read this novel then you are missing on a really fantastic read and that’s a real shame because something like this magnificent master piece shouldn’t be ignored/side-lined for the typical, main stream, hyped-up works of vampire fiction like the Twilight Series or The Vampire Dairies – I have read those yet this is simply in a league of its own.

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a copy of Soul Sisters from the author for a review via Full Moon Bites Book Tours.

Dana a young woman is on her honeymoon and goes for a walk with her new husband. While they are out enjoying the beautiful day and their time of just being together her husband has an accident. Dana has been staying by his side day and night waiting to see if he will live or die. When she can't take it any longer she runs out to be by herself for a while. On her walk she meets a stranger who says he can save her husband and she will become immortal. Dana will do anything to save her husband. She ask what she would have to do to save him.

The strange whose name is Donovan tells her that he is a vampire. He explains that he will save her husband for her soul. Why does he want or need her soul? She will become immortal and he will give her a soul sister who will be a vampire. Her soul sister will always protect her and keep her safe.

Dana meets her soul sister for the first time a very short time after her husband gets better. You see the reason she meets her then is because she is watching out for Dana and has always been near. She saves Dana from being ran over in the street but she doesn't have time to save her husband. Dana loved her husband so much that although she is over a 100 years old she has never had many relationships. She likes her life and she lives it like going to work and coming home to her own place and reading her books.

Her soul sister Ani is a little different she likes living life on the wild side. Ani loves her sister so much that she will do anything and I do mean anything to keep her sister safe but that is why they are soul sisters. One night Ani talks Dana into going out to a bar and having a little fun. When a man attacks Dana, Ani kills him and there is a witness to the murder which leads to big trouble for the twins. Vampires are not supposed to kill humans or do anything that will expose them.

Donovan comes to Dana to get her to talk to Ani so that she will turn herself over to him. He wants to kill Ani. If he kills her then Dana will die also and neither one of them want to die. So Dana, Ani, a werewolf and an ex-boyfriend of Ani's all set out to kill Donaovan before he can kill Ani. Ani has to be the one who kills him and after she kills him she will be the vampire queen. She will take over Donovan's place as the head vampire. She will rule over all the vampires. Will Ani kill the head vampire Donavan? Will she become the vampire queen?

I know I have said it over and over but this time it is actually the truth. I have never ever read a vampire book like this one before. The way that vampires are created is so very unique. I have never read a vampire book where vampires were created in this way. They maybe one out there but I have not read it. I loved how they were created it gives the vampire genre a whole new twist. The ending is very amazing. While I knew how it would end I never in a million years expected it to end quite like it did.

Soul Sisters Ani and Dana are in a fight for their lives…literally. Vampire Creator Donovan has revealed he will end Ani’s life due to her killing of an innocent. But Ani claims it was all to protect her sister Dana from being raped and possibly killed. Now they must travel thousands of miles in search of an ally and figure out a way to stop Donovan. Because when one sister dies, so does the other. That’s what happens when you share a soul.

Throughout the book we get transported from present time to back in the past beginning with 1912. Each time we are taken back the reader gets a little more info into how vampires are made and how it all started for Dana and Ani. Soul Sisters was a really interesting book with storyline that was different than the other vampire genres I have read. Once I understood the difference between Ani and Dana being 'twins' and 'soul sisters', I was able to understand the book a little more. I love how one sister is a vampire and immortal while the other is just immortal. It really is a great concept and makes the book unique.

But I did find I was confused throughout the book in different parts due to not enough detail and clarification. Some of my questions were answered but there was still a few that I was left with in the end. Hopefully they will get answered as the series continues.

I also couldn’t connect much with Dana’s character at all. I think largely due to the fact that there wasn’t much detail to her or development. You would think that if someone was around over a hundred years they would have a little more depth to them. At one point she is furious with Ani and the next thing you know she has forgiven her for everything in the past…all because Ani saved her from slipping on some ice? Ani on the other hand was pretty neat character and I enjoyed seeing her relationship with Dana play out from her side of the story. She was more developed and I would love to see more of her and Diego’s past and present brought forth.

I also found the ending to be a little flat. There was a lot of buildup to take on Donovan and then it just ended. But with the ending I think it’s a great lead in to the next book of the series. All in all Soul Sisters was a fairly good read and quite interesting. The authors approach into the vampire world is appealing and I look forward to see where she takes the series.

WHAT I LIKED:

I adored how unique the premise of this story was. Basically, Dana gives her soul to Donovan in exchange for saving the love of her life. In doing so, her soul sister, Ani, is created. Ani is Dana's identical twin except for one key difference: Ani is a vampire. That right there is an awesome concept and so unique from anything I've ever read. Overall I thought this was pretty good, there was some romance, plenty of adventure, and a great relationship. The sisters are over 100 years old and you get flashbacks from present day to when Dana was younger and first gives away her soul. These are handled in separate chapters so it's clear when the flashbacks occur. I felt this was a great way to approach these and I think they really enhanced the story.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:

There are a couple of things that bothered me about this story. First of all, the formatting needs to be redone. Initially I was given a review copy but I bought the book on Amazon since it's only $0.99. Before I get into the formatting issues, let me say that I have a Kindle keyboard. Now, there are no indentations for the start of a paragraph and except in a few places, there's no extra white space between paragraphs. This made it very distracting when reading because it felt like the text all ran together. Additionally, the chapters didn't have definitive breaks so it was easy to miss the heading "Chapter X" amidst all of the text. Maybe it doesn't look so bad on other Kindles, but on mine it made me have to focus a bit more and disrupted my ability to truly become immersed.

My other issue was with the style. The author jumps perspective and sometimes I'd get confused about whose thoughts I was reading. You'd have a large block of one character's perspective then suddenly it would jump to someone else's. With no clear breaks in white space or anything to indicate a section break, it was jarring.

OVERALL VERDICT: 4/5 Blue Duckies!

The story and premise in general were great and really interesting. It definitely kept me reading and I was dying to find out what happened next. I just wish it were better formatted and that the author hadn't jumped perspectives so much.

Soul Sisters by Janiera Eldridge Reviewed by Nanette Bradford (Member of the YATR Review Panel) Date read: 17th October 2012

What an awesome new twist for how vampires are created. I would of never thought of something like that and it was a good thing that Janiera Eldridge did because I loved this story.

Back in the late 1800's Dana was a 23 year old black girl in Harlem. She lived in a high class area with her mother and father, loved reading writing poetry and collecting her porcelain dolls. On a walk to the only doll store in town she runs into a beautiful young man named Bryson. They quickly fell head over heels for Each other and get married. While on their honeymoon something happens that causes Dana to have to turn to a mysterious Stranger for help to keep her Bryson with her. What he does is just amazing. He created Ani from a part of Dana’s soul. Ani is Dana’s Soul Sister and protector and in return Dana became immortal.

Currently, Dana and Ani are two totally different girls. On the outside they are almost identical but while Ani is the wild and crazy Vampire that loves to go out and party, Dana is the solemn and quiet Human who loves to sit around at home with a good book.

Ani and Dana are as close as can be. Dana has been a stick in the mud lately and Ani wanted to get her out and just let herself Loose for once. Dana got herself into trouble and ended up outside with some guy who was forcing himself on her. Ani Was not a happy vampire. She went a little crazy and ended up feeding off of the jerk and some other guy walking past.

This is a big no no in the eyes of the vampire society and they decide they want to terminate Ani’s life. Well, Dana and Ani Are connected so if one dies guess what happens to the other? Yep.. you guessed it.. Now they are on the run from Ani’s maker and they will stop at nothing to save their own lives. They’ve lived centuries But they are not ready to die today..

This was such an exciting book but I felt like Ani a bit disappointed there wasn’t a great fight. I love a great fight. J I Can’t wait for the next book to come out, Dark Expectations. I'm hoping its just as crazy and exciting as this book was.

Soul Sisters
Soul Sisters begins with Ms. Eldridge setting up the relationship between her two main characters, sisters Ani and Dana. Ani is a vampire and kills a girl that Dana works with for arbitrary reasons. The author then flashes back a hundred years earlier when Dana was a girl and Ani was not in her childhood-Quite a hook that kept me reading. Later, the title is explained. Dana’s husband dies and she makes a deal with Donovan, a head vampire, for her husband’s life. Part of the deal involves a “soul” sister or her identical twin. Dana’s husband dies shortly after he is saved and she lives her life without a serious boyfriend, using her soul sister as her primary relationship. Later on Donovan comes back into their lives and threatens them. They form a group with Diego, one of Donovan’s old bodyguards, Christian, a werewolf, and Marcel. The five of them plan to take Donovan out and install Ani as the new head vampire or queen. There are sparks between Ani and Diego. The author hints at a possible relationship with Dana and the werewolf, but that never materializes. The ending is left somewhat open. Possible sequel?
My thoughts: Ms. Eldridge has a great imagination. For example, I liked how she explained the ineffectiveness of holy water as a vampire weapon and added a new weapon called a diamond spur used for killing. I also liked the premise of having a soul sister as part of the vampire bargain. Ms. Eldridge’s dialogue was modern, realistic, and humorous at times. She gave the book a sense of fun and added modern day references to modern day music and TV, making the book very contemporary. Overall, I really enjoyed the read and was thoroughly entertained. I think readers who like Twilight will also like Soul Sisters. Although the book is not YA, it was clean enough to let a teen a read it. Terrific job and great first novel! 5 stars/5 stars

Soul Sisters

Janiera Eldridge I am intrigued. I really enjoyed the twist in this book and the new story. I read a lot of paranormal fiction, and this has a totally different story, fresh and new. Vampires why yes we have them! Eternal souls, they are not to be missed. Love why that is present too, now add a bit of mystery and YOU have this book. The story was well written with very few grammar errors. I thought it was a fabulous first outing for the author. I started the book and found it to be a quick read, since I did not want to stop reading it. The sisters were wonderful characters. (With a unique twist on vampires) Dana and her soul sister Ani who was created after Dana made an agreement with the creator in an attempt to save her husband's life. Sadly this was not a deal that had a long shelf life. Ani is a vampire born of Dana's own blood and Dana is immortal human for all eternity. Ani wants to protect Dana at all costs. I found the soul sister concept to be very interesting.

The book played back in forth in time frames. I at first did not think I would like this and in the end found it to be nice, since it allowed me present and past. It complimented the book for me, when I was concerned it would confuse me. I ended up being pleased with this, so kudos!
The book is fast paced and full of action, and some romance. I enjoyed the characters and did I mention we have another Vamp and oh let us not forget the hottie Werewolf. I mean come on! I enjoy a good fur ball. LOL! What will happen once they get together and try to correct the wrongs of Ani. Will the creator Donovan punish them with their lives? I suggest you pick this book up and find out. Please take the time and give this new up and coming author a shot. I am looking forward to see what she comes up with next.

Soul Sisters by Janeira Eldridge
I downloaded this book from Amazon during a promotion and on behest of the author for a review.
The premise of the book was delightfully novel and fresh and gets a 4 * review rating without a doubt. It is seldom that with the amount of books I read and review that I find a vampire story with a truly unique plot line and this book is truly unique in that regard.
Characters in the book are mostly well fleshed out when they are major characters and the other characters are believable within the story line. I found the conflict between the sisters at time forced though and the dialogue between them, especially when they were in conflict with one another a bit confusing and I found the one sister to be a drama queen extraordinaire. This however is purely a personal observation and should be read in that context. Overall most of the characters were believable and likeable if that was the role they were to play within the book. For character growth however I again felt the major role players lacking in growth and at times very naïve. Thus a 3 * rating for character formation in the book.
Editing in the book was a problem for me personally. I felt that it could have been really good if it underwent one last edit. Spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes were not overbearing but it was present and it did distract me from the story line. For Editing I give it a 3 * rating.
General enjoyment and recommendation for a specific target market.
I really enjoyed the book. I think that most people who have a love for new adult, paranormal fiction will and thus another 4 * rating for that fact.
Overall this book thus gets a 3.5 * rating which I convert with ease and pleasure to a 4 * read.

Although Dana is human, as soul sister to vampire Ani she could potentially live forever. Unfortunately, Ani’s decision to kill a human who tries to hurt Dana causes the vampire leader Donovan to decide that the sisters are more trouble than they’re worth. Fortunately, the sisters have some powerful friends and if they manage defeat Donovan, Ani will be safe as the new vampire leader. But first, they have to survive…

This book has a lot of potential. The writing was occasionally stilted, perhaps because the words and sentence structure were reasonably simple, but the writing was certainly not bad and wouldn’t have distracted me from a really good story. At the beginning, I was completely engrossed in learning more about the unique vampire mythology the author created. It’s so fun to see a new take on an old legend, especially one in which vampires enjoy being vampires instead of being all angsty about it. At only 80 pages long, I was dreading running out of book!

Sadly, I ended up feeling very let down by the second half. In the last forty pages, nothing happens except the characters preparing for a massive, climactic showdown with Donovan. There’s training, and more training, and the book slowly started to drag. Eighty pages suddenly seemed like a lot to get through! If this had, in fact, lead to an epic showdown, I would have been ok with all the lead up. Instead, the bad guys basically just surrender and the anticlimactic ending takes only a few pages. I might read more be the author since she had some great ideas, but in this case I was disappointed with the execution.

I REALLY LOVED this book! It's so FRESH and ORIGINAL!! I received this book from the because I will be doing a blog tour for this book towards the end of the month(June) so make sure you look out for the dates, it's going to be GREAT!

This book tells the story of twins, Dana and Ani. They aren't actually twins but they are but they are in fact sisters by Dana's soul and they just happen to look exactly alike(Isn't sounding GREAT already?). If this isn't making any sense then you should read this book to see how this unique scenario plays out. Well Dana is a Human and Ani is a VAMPIRE. Ani is EXTREMELY protective of Dana and can get a little out of control when it comes to her. Ani has a maker and he is has decided that Ani should be killed for her reckless behavior that could out the vampire community. If Ani dies then Dana dies too and Ani is NOT having that.

I don't want to give away any spoilers because this book is worth reading! The characters were so intriguing and I wanted to read more about them, I loved the relationship between the twins and the bickering between them was always FUN to read about. The intensity is there throughout the book which keep me turning the page/screen(kindle :). In this book you will find out what happens on the twins journey and who they meet along the way are quite interesting.

I recommend this book for anyone to read, it is fun and a good read. I read this book way to fast and I miss the characters already :(

Thank you to Janiera for giving me the opportunity to read your book and letting me find out what is really going on in that head of your in a good way ;)

Thanks for listening!
