Peter Madsen is a drawing artist and illustrator, an author, a filmmaker and a lecturer. He was born on 12 May, 1958 in the city of Århus, Denmark. As a boy he moved around Denmark with his family until they settled down in the city of Roskilde. Peter Madsen had his first strips published at the age of fifteen, then chose to study medicine. During the years 1980-84 this was his main occupation until he gave up his studies to be able to concentrate on directing the animated feature film Valhalla. He is probably best known for the series of comic albums called Valhalla (1979 -), humourous comics about the gods of Norse mythology. You can read the history of Valhalla here. In 1995, Peter Madsen published The Son of Man, a graphic novel of 136 pages in water colour, based on the four Gospels in the New Testament. In 1999, he contributed to the interpretation of The Book of Job by publishing an expressive graphic story for adults, The Story of Job. In cooperation with Johannes Møllehave, Peter Madsen wrote Signe's Christmas (2003), which is a familiy book on Christmas, illustrated by Peter Madsen. In 2004, Peter Madsen published a new interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Story of a Mother" in the form of a graphic novel called The Story of a Mother, based on a tale by Hans Christian Andersen, in water colour and gouache. In 2008, Peter wrote and illustrated The Journey to Jersualem, a book about Easter. In 2009, the first books in the picture book series, Troll Life were published. Troll Life is co-created by Peter Madsen and his wife, Sissel Bøe. So far 9 books have been published.
On top of this range of comic albums and graphic novels, Peter Madsen has created a lot of artwork for book and LP/CD covers, posters and illustrations for magazines and periodicals, newspapers and associations; storyboards,T-shirt designs, stamps and murals. He has illustrated several books, among them the Troll Story, (Troldehistorien) by Henning Kure (1989, rhymes by Rune Kidde) and the School Bible by Bodil Busk Sørensen from 2000. Peter Madsen is also a prolific lecturer. Over the last fifteen years, he has given more than 700 lectures. He is married, lives in Silkeborg, Denmark, and has two children and two step-children.

This comic has such great retellings of the Nordic myths and seeing them accompanied by the stories of how they were made as well as the original myths is really great. I like the colouring in the later comics better as well as the drawings but it was fun to see the first ones again.

Starten er god, men lidt for fjollet. Høj 3/5

Very cartoon-y style and quite simple versions of the legends of Norse mythology. It reminded me of my childhood, so I enjoyed it, but not as much as I enjoyed Fables. This is originally in Danish, not Norwegian, and unfortunately, the translation was not exactly sound.

I had been eying these for quite a while and I am so happy that I finally got it. It was a great experience to read this for a couple of different reasons.
One thing is the nostalgia this universe brings me. I read at least some of these comics when I was a child, but even more so did I watch the cartoon, multiple times throughout the years. It was nice to be able to return to something a remember from back when I was little.
Gernerally this is an easy read. Most of these editions are the original comics, and in between them are short texts and many more pictures. I personally loved the aspect of the added information to go along with the comics themselves. Giving the chance to learn about the process of the comic coming to life.
I am also a big nerd when it comes to mythology so the fact that the original myths, that the stories are based around, are also included makes me eternally happy. I appreciate the ability to separated the “real information” from the fiction made up for this universe.
The art style is probably not my favorite, but I do understand that these comics are of a different time.
Another thing of a different time is some of the views presented. It is quite clear in some parts that this comic is a little bit dated, and includes things that would probably not go over as well in a story of 2020. It is nice though that the authors themselves at least somewhat acknowledge this in the comments after one of the comic issues.
I had a great time reading this, and learning more about the norse mythology. It is not perfect but it is still really good.

(Same review on all 5 parts)

These comics are absolutely fantastic! They were what drove me into my huge interest in nordic myth and legend. Here you’ll meet them all! Odin, Tor Loki (mostly), but also all the other gods and goddess! And the two human servants living with Tor and Sif.

It’s clear to see how the creators have gone from the very bulky drawing style in the beginning to the refined and beautiful drawings that quickly show up the more of these stories you read.

And the stories don’t follow the myths and legends perfectly, it’s mostly Madsen and his team and their take on them. So they are a bit kinder than they really were, but that is an understandable change.

These are some HIGH QUALITY comics that everyone should read! Especially in these luxury collections, where you got so much behind the scenes stories!

The first comics I read as a child, besides unspeakable amounts of everything with Donald Duck and his family, must have been Valhalla.
Therefor it filled me with happy childhood memories just opening this and as I read through I wasn’t disappointed.
The drawings is beautiful, though perhaps a bit to the very “cartoon’ish’ side. The 3 stories in this is a strong opening and especially the first “Ulven er løs” made a great impression on me.
I have seen others that mean these Valhalla stories are sexist and so on, but I beg to differ. I actually thought that they where very much ahead of their time, and their sexist view on things and the steriotypes they show, is exactly made so to prove a point that something is wrong and should be changed or at least set some thougts in motion.
Obviously I didn’t see that as a kid, but that’s also the beauty of comics, when there is something for both the young and the older audience.

An accurate and gripping, yet simultaneously bloody hilarious, take on Norse mythology. Great art too.

It's ok if you want introduction to norse mythology in very accessible form. The stories are either based directly on particular myth, with the text of myth of included at the end, or stories fill up the gaps between myths.
The artwork is very much in classical comic book style, very similar to Asterix & Obelix series.

Oh man, talk about a childhood book series. I was absolutely thrilled that they released the comics in 5 collected books.

Or those who are unfamiliar wit the series, the comics follow the two Midgard siblings Tjalfe and Røshva, as they travel with Loki and Thor to Valhalla, after Loki tricks Tjalfe into braking one of the bones of third goats. This book tells the tale of Røshva meeting the great Fenri wolf as well as the tale where Thor most disguise himself as a woman when the jetties steal his hammer and finally the fable of Odin's bet.

The series has its silly moments as it is a comic series and was made with children in mind but it is still a great series that tells a great deal about he different Norse gods and the myths which surround them. I would certainly recommend them to anyone how has a love for mythology or just a good series to read with the kids as well as share some truly notable books of Danish literature.

Surprisingly this ages very well. The characters feel very fleshed out and with their own unique voice only in this comic book straight from the start. Great art and surprisingly quite feminist (especially in book 2) for the time when it was released. I can't really fault much in this book and the package is really first class with all the interviews and extra material. I'll be buying the rest of these books.
