Ryleigh Simmons just turned seventeen. After losing her parents in a fatal accident, Ryleigh moves in with an aunt she was unaware of and is introduced to family she never knew existed. After finding out she is a descendant of the Fae, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery with the assistance of Tristan - a long lost cousin. Ryleigh's Uncle Finar wants nothing more than to consume her and those like her to become the most powerful Fae in existence and Ryleigh is the only one who can stop him.

Slowly starting to stir, she could hear the voices say, "Shhh, quiet - she's coming around." Ryleigh groaned as she attempted to open her eyes. "It's okay, little one, wake up," she could hear the soft voices calling to her.

Ryleigh opened her eyes and shut them immediately. The blinding light felt like fire raging through her skull. She could hear rustling around her. Opening her mouth to speak, her voice caught the gravel coating in the back of her throat. "Hello," she choked up.

Have you ever felt as if you didn't connect with others on a personal level? Have you always felt different? Things are clearly not as they seem and I was anxious to find out more.

I was intrigued by the story right away and as I got further into the story the more mysterious it all became. Parts seemed so real and others were pure fantasy. Mixing the two together made for an eventful ride. A journey I enjoyed taking as everything became clearer. This supernatural story was an entertaining read.

"This was her daily routine - to get up and run. It helped release the stress that built beneath her quiet exterior. Outwardly, she looked as undisturbed as a secluded pond; however, one stone's throw could perpetuate an outward ripple that threatened violence. Her father taught her how to release the caged animal inside her through exercise...and running was the way of it."

After losing her parents in a fatal car accident, Ryleigh's aunt swoops in to save her. The first thing that happens when she arrives at Aunt Vera's mansion? The butler locks Ryleigh in her room. And she just accepts it.

Long blink.

That was my first problem. My second was once she realized her parents hadn't died in the accident, she didn't insist on where she could find them. She was more fascinated by her heritage and her new cousins. Her cousins didn't have any powers of hypnosis either. When Ryleigh realizes her aunt monitors her every movement in school, she also doesn't cause a fuss. Again, she simply accepts it and tries to just work around it. For a girl that was rebelling against her parents in the beginning of the book, this was a complete 360 in comparison.

There was also the incident where Ryleigh accidentally got her friend Cyrus sick because of her awakening powers. She simply shrugged it off. She didn't once regret that or worry that it might happen again. But what I liked most about Ryleigh was her connection to her father. Except when she was physically present with him that connection seemed to vanish.

The relationship that stuck out was the one Ryleigh had with Tristan. Despite their perceived relationship as cousins they feel an immediate connection. I liked the way she built up a relationship with him. Although she felt an immediate attraction to him, she didn't give in to her feelings right away. To me, that was the highlight of the book.

Now the Fae in this book are actually all Halflings, half Fae, half Human. Let's put aside my disappointment I had that there weren't any full Fae in the book. It's neither here nor there. Halflings can't do full magic on their own. They need imps to facilitate the process. I thought the idea was imaginative but lacked something in actual execution. The imps themselves were a little too under developed. They seemed like nothing more then little puppets rather then beings of vital importance to the Halflings.

The way the Halflings wielded magic was by manipulating Chi. Myers never fully explains Chi. I thought it was a bit odd to use Chi as it's an Eastern concept and Fae is such a Western platform. The explanation would have gone a long way.

The language used in reference to the antagonist, Finar seemed more suited to a teenager then to a centuries old being.

"Finar was ticked off. It took him a long time to calm down to think about what to do."

It was hard to take him seriously when such juvenile words were used with him.

Ultimately, I wasn't very happy with this book. The imps didn't win me over nor did the behavior of Ryleigh.

As a statement of full disclosure, Ms. Meyers approached me to edit her book after a review mentioned the edits.

Any issues with the edits after this date fall squarely on my shoulders, not Ms. Meyers who is dedicated to providing the most enjoyable read possible. All that said, on to my own thoughts on this story.

It was an absolute kick. This is a story I would have no problem recommending to any parent whose looking to get their child to read. There story is not "dumbed down" for its target YA audience. It has a fast pace and provides all the hooks needed to get the reader to want to continue turning the page.

There is love, betrayal, and a fantastic villain. The story lays a foundation for an alternate reality full of magic and supernatural creatures. This first book sets up many of the rules for what I am sure will be a continuing saga.

I would say that this story is very much targeted to the teen female (like Twilight). Don't discount it based on that as it is simply what I feel is the target audience. However, as a much-older-than-teen male, I still enjoyed the story and believe Ms. Meyers has a series here that will gain a very devoted audience.

I downloaded this book when the author advertised it for free on Amazon. My only regret is that I didn’t read it sooner. I have always loved paranormal and fantasy books and Myers did not let me down! I love the image of the Fae she created. It was unique and interesting. The only speed bump for me was that I got frustrated at times with all the “lying” and withholding of information that the characters were involved in. It didn’t take away from the story, but it did take a while for some discoveries to be made. This is a great book and I do look forward to the next one in the series. In my opinion, Myers did a wonderful job with her first novel!

This book is the bomb dot com! I don't want to reveal any plot twists by going too in-depth, but the visuals are just stunning! If you know what's good for you, you'll give it a shot! I can assure you, you'll be sucked in.

Excellent paranormal tale. A little on the Young Adult side, at least at the start, but a very enjoyable read. Ms. Myers has developed an interesting mythos using creatures of legend with new sets of rules with her first novel. I hope there will be more with these characters soon.

I don't know, book was interesting I guess but the writing just seemed off, kept shifting points of view, a lot of exposition. You know how authors are supposed to show, not tell? Well, there's a lot of telling here. And while it's nominally written in third person, focusing on Ryleigh and sometimes Tristan, every time there's a paragraph or two on any minor character, her father Tom, Aunt Vera, the villain Uncle Finar, there's a sentence or two revealing what the character's thinking or planning. And I noticed typos in a couple of places too. It all made Dark Revelation a very amateurish read.

Until about the halfway point, I kept asking myself, what's the point of this? Because besides what seemed like the typical girl loses both her parents and moves into a cold relative's house where she's forced to attend a new school, falls for some guy who may or may not be her cousin, and stumbles upon some secret about her heritage, there's only the writing, and well, I really didn't like the writing. Like the transition between chapters one and two, I wasn't sure whether I was reading a dream sequence, a flashback, whatever, until I figured out later Ryleigh had been in a car crash and chapter two was from Tristan's point of view and happens right after the crash. But once Aunt Vera and Tristan started explaining things, I have to give Myers credit, the back story is very creative, it's an interesting spin on fairies and I especially liked the imps, although I wished they were fleshed out a little more, got more development, because as they are they're just sort of talking pets that helped the characters perform magic.

Too bad the interesting world building didn't save the plot though, even after Finar's revealed to be the bad guy out to kill Ryleigh and absorb her magic, I still had a hard time getting into it. Like when Finar makes Tristan absorb his twin's magic, what kind of a villain would do that, make one of the good guys stronger while giving him a reason for revenge too? I know what Finar's overall motives are, but a lot of his actions aren't explained very well, some like what I just mentioned making even less sense than that. Most of the time, I just didn't get it. I kept wishing I had more of his story, and some things felt like contradictions, like Finar's father Valen, eventually killing off his henchmen before finally dying himself, and then Finar not having any henchmen until he shows up for the final confrontation with some. Or Ryleigh believing Tristan killed her mother when she walks into a room and sees Tristan and her dead mother, when he was fighting Finar a few moments before. All of it was just really weird.

Anyway, the overall story's not bad. After I finally figured out the point of the plot and ignore the gaping holes, it was actually fairly good. But I had to suffer through some very subpar writing to get through it, it's not even as good as many other self published books I've read, and I read a lot of self published books. My recommendation? This one desperately needs a good editor.

Ryleigh Simmons had a tendancy to seek out trouble when confronted with a "Fight or Flight" situation. She has anger management issues and moving around all the time with her Father's job isolated Ryleigh and she made very few friends. A tragic car accident finds Ryleigh waking up in a hospital and being told her parents were killed in the crash and her Aunt Vera turns up to take her in. Things go downhill from there, Aunt Vera seems nice enough but is obviously hiding something and Ryleigh needs to find out what her secrets are. Learning who and what she is will change her world forever and she needs to learn to protect herself from what is coming. A touch of romance with Tristan who is drawn to her and wants to protect her though I never really felt their connection as there was no undying love declarations they just seemed to bond having known each other such a short time. It was an enjoyable read. The imps were an interesting addition to the story line about the Fae though I thought the characters could have been developed more and the romance explored in further detail.

This book seems like its going to be good, but then it just keeps getting worse. The story line continues on before a plot is even developed. The author switches between an omniscient point of view and a first person point of view, without fully developing any of the characters. It gets confusing, and doesn't allow you to become attached to the characters. Reading this book felt like I was reading the authors notes on the basics of how the story would eventually develop the story, not the final draft of a story. Nothing is explained in depth, and the story randomly jumps around from topic to topic with very little to segue from one topic to the other.

This story has some potential, but awkward phrasing and some abrupt transitions kept me from enjoying it. The fact that the author mashed together several different mythologies kept me distracted as well and I found it difficult to suspend my disbelief.

This book started out very intriguing and interesting. I couldn't stop reading at first but then it kind of fell apart for me. I liked Ryleigh but considering she had no idea that the was a Fae, she accepted it very quickly.

The story had serious potential, but the writing left something to be desires. Yet another great idea poorly executed.
