I AM STILL VERY EXCITED ABOUT SHARK WEEK!!!!!

one fish, two fish, red fish, dead fish

 photo IMG_4075_zpszyyrl75h.jpg

this is a nonfiction book in verse, featuring the cat in the hat and thing 1 and thing 2, that shares the wonder of SHARKS with little kids, teaching them that they're not the monsters of the ocean they may seem

 photo IMG_4066_zpsr54azrmg.jpg

tell that to those fishies!

 photo IMG_4076_zpsqvrr7yra.jpg

there's plenty of age-appropriate factual information about sharks here. it's not deep science or anything, but it does show where baby sharks come from

 photo IMG_4068_zpsbl9itjg6.jpg

and it has a good overall message about how humans are more dangerous to sharks than they are to us and they need our protection, so just say "NO!" to shark fin soup!

considering how annoyingly sing-songy it is, it's pretty impressive that it manages to squeeze in as many facts as it does, although it's true that the verse is occasionally a bit weak.

Pectoral fins lift -
I have been thinking -
like two airplane wings,
to keep sharks from sinking.

but it maintains the balance between instructional and fun, and covers a broad range of species, including my buddy:

 photo IMG_4067_zpsk8nqnosc.jpg

the best part is the segment in which awards are distributed to the different species based on their characteristics: biggest, smallest, oldest, etc

The Things are now holding
a Shark Spotter contest
to reward each shark here
for what it does the best.

my favorites:

but i think we need to be a bit more cautious about how we deploy our second person pronouns

don't try to tag sharks, kids! "you" should not be finding out anything, except by watching SHARK WEEK under the supervision of your parents.

a fun shark book and a good way to kick off SHARK WEEK!

come to my blog!

Not putting dates so it doesn’t count to my reading challenge but everyone needs to know about my shark book because it’s special to me

Our girls love the books in The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library series. They combine the fun and rhymes of the Cat in the Hat with science topics and fun facts.

Our girls also love sharks, so this was an easy choice. My only critique is that it covers each type of reptile very briefly, with seemingly random information, but it is an easy reader after all.

I didn’t even realize this series was a thing until now, but it’s cool that it is.

The only reason I grabbed this one is because I love sharks and it looked cute. This was a cute but age-appropriate way to teach kids about sharks.

I enjoyed the photos and facts, though the one about the oldest shark isn’t quite true. There did seem to be a lot packed into this book, so it might be better for more advanced readers of the target age group.

Love that this spoke about why people fear sharks as well as how we can protect sharks. I liked that a good variety of sharks was shown as well. Some of the verses needed some work, but overall this was enjoyable and I’m glad it exists for kids.

Dr. Seuss's beloved character, the Cat in the Hat, takes children on an educational undersea trip to learn more about sharks. An enlightening read for mid-late elementary school students, especially those who like expository text about animals.

A children’s library has to have some Cat in the Hat books. If your child loves visiting oceans and aquariums this is a must have book! This book introduces beginning readers to true facts referencing the history of the ocean and creatures living in the ocean.

This book was very informative! I enjoyed the facts about sharks as well as the rhyming words, it created a nice flow to the story. The illustrations went well with the words, however I found them to be somewhat distracting. I would read this if my students were learning about sharks!

I like this informational book about sharks. At the end, it even mentioned that sharks are endangered and we should help them. It talks about shark facts, and that we should not be afraid of them. I, however, will stay afraid of them.

This is the perfect book to teach kids all about sharks. It is not a textbook, but they still get the information. While some of it is simplified for kids, some vocab couldn’t be simplified and this book didn’t shy from that just made sure to explain the word.

A cute idea, but it's too long for the target age group, and the verse gets in way of the facts.

Why do people insist on rhyming when it then makes bad choices for words and information??? Preachy at the end against human beings being part of the food chain (eating shark).

The Cat in the Hat early reader series book, not written by Dr. Seuss, provides educational material about sharks. My granddaughter enjoyed this book and its information very much. I also enjoyed it!

I like when teeth from sharks mouths go into the ground so people can find them. I learned that sharks come in different shapes and sizes
