a deranged arthur wanders about the castle calling for merlin like he didn't just watch his father burn him alive; the story tumbles into a clattering catastrophe from there.
i noped-the-fuck-out when his strategy for defending camelot from sorcerous invasion seemed to consist entirely of standing in the throne room surrounded by the symbols of his monarchy.
The story starts out with Arthur, suffocating in his guilt, while he watches Merlin, one of the only good friends he has ever had, burn at the pyre for sorcery.
The plot twist was that Merlin, a seemingly, clumsy servant boy, has been protecting Camelot with all his life for the years he has lived there. And now that Camelot's unknown advantage has disappeared, it is at its most vulnerable state.
The Sorcerer-King takes advantage of this, amassing an entire army of Druids takes over Camelot at night.
Arthur and Merlin, newly resurrected from the dead, struggle to return Camelot to its rightful king (no, I'm not talking about Uther here).
I didn't think it was worth the read, honestly.
It might have had a good storyline which was well drawn out and the characters had a lot of depth to them, but I just couldn't stop the boredom threatening to overcome to me every 100 words or so. My mind wandered to the next book I was going to read and I was easily distracted.
I just felt The Sorcerer and the King dragged on for too long which is a pity, because it had real potential.
But other than all those negative points, I felt it was extremely believable. The author wrote convincingly and when I started reading The Sorcerer and the King , I was impressed with the high level of vocabulary that he/she had.
But overall, it was an okay read, interesting in some parts, but something I would definitely not be reading again.
This was actually quite interesting. In the beginning Merlin gets burned at the stake because Uther Pendragon somehow found out about Merlin being a sorcerer. And soon everything else starts to crumble: Camelot is defeated and a new King reigns--the Sorcerer-King. Now everyone who doesn't have magic isn't worth much anymore, besides being servants of those with magic. This is Arthur's new place in his former kingdom as well. He's only a mere servant--and the sorcerers have their methods to force him to comply. When there are rumours about a new sorcerer, more powerful than any other sorcerer who lives , the Sorcerer-King wants him to join his kingdom. But what he didn't expect is that this sorcerer is as far away from joining him as Uther is.
It is, indeed, very interesting to see roles reversed. Artur now being not just a mere servant, but . I have to admit that I'm not really sure if the MCs are really all that true to character. Arthur's, IMO, too accepting in regard to his new place at Camelot. He, of course, hopes and wishes to get Camelot back, to become king, but he really doesn't put up that much of a fight. Especially the psychological effects in that regard are a bit lacking..
Futhermore, the relationship between the 2 MC's is somewhat sudden. There's not much sexual tension between them, IMO, and then, suddenly, they're an item. It wasn't all that believable...
