I’ve been kinda on a hit with the recent books I’ve read. What a juicy, amazing and differently interesting book! 👏 I really really loved it. 😍 This book actually made me stay until 3 am to finish it. 😁 Absolutely loved every moment reading this one. I was completely mesmerized. 😌

Let’s not beat around the bush. Darien is a thief. But in his defense, he’s a philanthropist thief. 😂 He ran away from home very young and has been on his own for a very long time. He’s not greedy and he doesn’t steal to become rich. He steals just enough to survive and he steals to support those unfortunate souls in need in hospitals on those deserted planets. But now, he has stolen from someone deadly who won’t just ignore him. Now goons are on his arse and he has to run away as far as he can to escape his demise. And then he met a stranger who appeared out of nowhere and wanting to help him escape from his fate. Can he trust this huge stranger or not? 😉

R'kos, son of the Ankylos Emperor aka Ricky is definitely a rebel. He’s supposed to marry soon and enter a triad marriage that is a traditional custom on Ankylos. The triad usually consists of two males and one female. And Ricky is gay all the way. 😁 He doesn’t want to be married to a woman and a man. And human males irrationally and irresistibly attract him. 😉 It’s time to leave his home planet and go to Elora Ki to explore the flesh and love of human males. And then he met Darien whose scent attracts him like a moth to the flame. He needs to know this man and he needs to be with that man. If only Darien opens up to him and let him become his lover. 😌

While escaping Elora Ki and went on a shipping mission to other planets, Darien and Ricky found out that although they are of different species, they can’t be more compatible and made for each other in the bed. 😁 But it’s not only about sex, it’s about all those maelstrom of emotions and feelings swirling inside their hearts. 😌 But running away from your problems is definitely not a good and a permanent solution. It’s going to bite them in their arses and hard and soon. The goons are still after Darien and the warriors of Ankylos are on a frantic mission to find their wayward prince. Will they be able to overcome everything and be together in the end?

Wow! This is a 126 pages book and I was totally blown away by how much emotions and feelings were packed into this just over 100 pages novel! 😱 Definitely a bookgasam! 😍 While the sex is on fire and the anatomy of Ankylos bodies totally thrill me, it’s the bittersweet angst here that captured me completely. 😌 I really cried like a baby not only once but also twice while reading this book. 😭 It was just sooooooooo angsty and heartwarming and emotional. I really love EVERYTHING about this book. 💙 The worldbuilding is phenomenal, the MCs are soooo attractive and likable and the storyline was top-notch. I’m very very impressed. 😊 The chemistry between Ricky and Darien is just dynamite and those lovemakings definitely were a volcano explosion! 🔥 And I was very worried about the misunderstanding between these two lovers but it ended very well. I definitely would have appreciated an epilogue though but it was a very beautiful and heartfelt HEA. 😌 A great read for every sci-fi romance lovers out there. Can’t recommend enough! 👍👏

Favorite excerpts from the novel: 💗💜💗

“Oh, no, not at all.” Stink? Darien smelled exciting, new, enticing and right. He loved it. But diplomacy had taught him tact and reticence among other things.

Darien stuffed two slick fingers into his mouth to keep from squealing like a girl. A cock with self-lubing precome flavored like licorice and perfectly configured to massage his prostate while buried deep inside. He couldn’t have designed a more perfect sex partner, but he was so turned on, he wasn’t going to last long enough to get Ricky to fuck him right now.

“Put it in me. Fuck me,” he whispered in Ricky’s ear. Ricky reared back. “Fuck… oh.” If Darien had any say in the matter, Ricky would not be unfamiliar with the word fuck by the time they got back to Elora Ki. “Yes, in me, please.”

“I am impressed. A few of my brothers believe most humans are selfish. We may be a warlike race, but there is always a place in the hive for the elderly, infirm and disabled.”

The loneliness had been bearable before he’d know what it was like to have a companion like Ricky. A lover like Ricky. Darien might not ever recover from such a loss. He loved everything about Ricky, especially his complete and utter acceptance of the differences between them and his fascination with humanity.

“Please don’t leave me,” Darien whispered, heart hurting at the thought of never showing Ricky so many things. Never having Ricky in his bed again. Never hearing Ricky’s possessive sounds, the ones that made Darien feel important and loved even as they turned him on.

“You would seriously risk everything for this… nobody?” “I would risk everything for Darien, yes.

He’d been a fool to dream of a future with Ricky. Stupid romantic notions like that belonged in books. He’d go back to Elora Ki, take up where he’d left off, and find a man or ten to fuck this idiocy out of his heart and brain. Make him forget Ricky.

His ship was the only thing in this life that was truly his. Somehow, he’d thought his and Ricky’s shared experiences would be enough, but they weren’t. Darien couldn’t live like Ricky wanted him to, and he sure didn’t want to be the reason people laughed at Ricky.

“I will try to be better in the future to tell you, show you what I am thinking and feeling, but I am saying it now, and I hope you will try to remember it always. I love you, and I want us to be together.”

“I love you, too,” he whispered, low and fast, hoping it got easier to say. “I missed you.” Ricky didn’t say anything, just kissed him like the answers to the meaning of life could be found in his mouth. And maybe they could. The meaning of his life was there in Ricky’s kiss, in his love.

He was one fucking lucky thief. Stole an alien’s heart, and wasn’t ever going to give it back.

Alien n Outlaw by K C Burn

2nd book in the Galactic Alliance series. M-M science fiction romance with erotic elements. Can be read as a stand-alone.

Darien accepts help and a ride off the planet Elora Ki where he’s being pursued for Robin Hood tendencies. His rescuer, Ricky doesn’t understand the human’s need for privacy butt he smells intriguing and aroused.
The two discover their differences and their similarities in this outrageous and sexy hot romance. Often laugh-out-loud humorous and uplifting with acceptance as a strong message.

I listened to the audio version narrated by Chad Maxwell who did a good job with emotional cadence but I sometimes got lost on whose perspective I was hearing.

I'll write as proper a review as I can in a bit, but first allow Spongebob and Patrick to show you how I looked like almost the entire time I was reading this book.

description

Yup. Giggled and almost managed a blush I did and was going to post something on Facebook at some point except I figured no one in my friends list really would appreciate a grown ass woman giggling over a lavender penis. No, you heard right. There was a lavender penis involved as well as some naughty inter-species man lovin' and pretty decent world building, all of which managed to save this book from a 3-star rating despite an unsatisfying end part with the MC's HEA road.

R'kos aka Ricky is a buff lavender skinned alien who goes on a bit of a road trip - or should we say space trip - to temporarily escape some arranged mating thing and to explore his attraction towards human males. While on a planet called Elora Ki, he meets and helps Darien, a futuristic Robin Hood, leave the planet and get away from some pissed off mob people. They go planet hopping, have some wild sexy times, and we get to giggle and sigh over some awesome differences between human and alien anatomy.

Let's start with the part I loved most about this book because I prolly won't be able to discuss anything else - Ricky's man parts. It says a lot about me that the main reason I adore this story is because of something between an alien's legs, but there you go.

description

It's not just the fact that Ricky has though that one little tidbit alone should win all kinds of awards. It's how the reader was introduced to it and Darien's enthusiasm when he discovered it. The guy was practically salivating over all the different creative carnal ways he can make use of this delicious development. I could probably come up with more decent reasons why I'm obsessing about this, but I feel Ricky's man parts are reasons enough.

It also doesn't hurt that both Darien and Ricky are great MCs. The chemistry is there even prior to the discovery of the wink wink nudge nudge and you just can't help falling in love with the adorable skin-headed lavender alien. The guy's ripped and in possession of some badass bedroom tools but is still so gentle and loving and in possession of some badass bedroom tools. Sorry, bit obsessed.

The world building is pretty cool as well. I don't read a lot of sci-fi alien stuff so I don't have a lot to compare this with, but I feel like the author did the job of helping me picture the planets and the different species out.

In fact, the world and the MCs and the awe inducing presence of Ricky's man parts were pretty much enough for a 5-star rating until later in the book when Darien turned from hardcore Robin Hood player kind of guy to an insecure teenage girl. It wasn't a huge change, but it was enough to knock off a star. I feel like there should have been another way for the characters to get into a conflict so they can make up and we get some more alien man lovin' other than just throwing in something so 90s romance novel-ish. It was a bit lazy IMO, but was acceptable enough considering how invested I already was with the MCs and their happiness.

All in all, a fun read and something that has definitely made me check out Jathan One-Moon's own HEA.

This had a much stronger sci-fi world-building than the first book in the series. I think because it was essentially a road trip and we got to see the characters move around the universe and interact with people on different worlds. I liked that a lot.

Lots of bed action here and I enjoyed the physical differences and how the sex between different species was incredibly hot. Darien and R'kos are extremely likeable characters. There's a sweet chemistry between them and the relationship that develops works on a lot of levels.

I'm curious where this series will go next. Addison? Vaughn? Sven? There's a lot of potential here for more stories. I hope we'll get them. If you enjoy your MM romance with a sci-fi twist this might be a book for you. This could be standalone but you'll get a better feel for the world and characters if you read the first in the series.

3.5-4 stars overall. This book was a little bit uneven in terms of my enjoyment. I loved the first 50% or so when R'kos and Darien were getting to know each other. The next 30% was less enjoyable for me because it focused on the outside forces keeping them from being together more than their relationship. I felt like the story kind of veered a little too far off course in these parts. The last 20% was good, though, because it came back to center and focused on our main couple again and what they needed to work through in order to find their HEA.

The story, briefly.
R'kos, a lavender-skinned alien from another planet, has essentially run away from home in a search for adventure and human contact. He's lived a rather sheltered life as the son of the emperor. In his visits to human planets, his curiosity was piqued by humans...and human desire. Luckily for him, almost immediately after his arrival on a human planet, he meets Darien, a trader who's on the run for engaging in some less than aboveboard activities. The story follows them as they make their way off-planet on Darien's trading route. When misfortune strikes them en route, however, they have to call for backup, and that's when the real trouble starts. After all, an emperor's son can't go missing for long before someone starts looking for him.

The characters.
I loved them! R'kos was such a sweet, gentle giant. The differences between his alien race and humans were different enough to be fun and entertaining without being totally outlandish and gross. A number of those differences were focused on the *ahem* sexytimes aspect of their differences. In a good way, of course. I was giggling and saying "Oh no they didn't!" when R'kos revealed his . More on this aspect later. Darien was initially a rather gruff character, but I warmed up to him and his blustery ways. He had a lot of bravado, but I think that also hid a vulnerability that stemmed from his being rejected by his father for his homosexuality when he was a youth. He ran away from home as a teenager and has been on his own ever since. They had great chemistry, and the possessiveness and caring they showed for each other were really sweet and sexy.

The sexytimes.
Brought to you by this image:

Heeeeeeee! Like I alluded to above, alien sexytimes were fun! Darien was super excited by R'kos's *ahem* anatomical variations. R'kos, in turn, was incredibly turned on by the scent and feel of his human lover. These scenes were smoooookin' hot! The only thing that detracted from the sexytimes is the ~30% in the middle when the two lovers are apart or otherwise incapacitated. I felt like the book kind of lost its momentum there.

Overall.
I loved this story when it focused on R'kos and Darien. I think the story introduced too many outside elements, though, that detracted from the discovery of their relationship and compatibility. I can see why those elements were brought into the story, but I think there was too much focus on those parts. Overall, though, I liked it quite a bit, and the discovery of each other's differences (and their attraction and love for each other) was very sweet, touching, and sexy. :) I'm curious enough about this sci fi world to see what's coming next from this author.

I expected much more from this book based on my friends’ enthusiastic reviews. (You know who you are 😉 and I still love you even if I didn’t love the book as much as you!). It took me a long time and a few re-starts to finish this galactic tale 😱!

Issues: simplistic writing style; funky narrator, odd plot.

Liked: 🔥Hot sex! Comparison of alien and human genitalia, mating practices, and living styles. Easy read/listen.

Fun for all: prehensile penis. Yes, you heard right!!! Is it waving at me? “Well, hello there you handsome, purple, limber length of goodness!!” (Not a quote from the book—just me 🍆😱).

Should you? Sure! But read the first in the series to get a better layout of the land.

Enjoy yet another purple alien book!!

An alien and human mating? Oddly its quite sensual and unique, especially with the liquorice flavour part of the story which was weirdly interesting. I had no idea what to make of it at first, lets just say it came as a surprise a good one, Lol. Ricky has some potent and special assets he knows how to use them much to Darien's delight. Darien is in heaven, happy with his little alien and who could blame him. Cute, likeable and very entertaining. A fun read without being too strange or off putting, that's saying something coming from me as this wouldn't be my usual read. Recommended!

I'm loving this series so much! The sci-fi elements and romance are perfectly in sync--never too much of one or the other. R'kos was alien enough to make it blazing hot fun reading of him and Darien as they forged a believable connection. Each of the MC had been seeking something and found it in each other. Glad we got to visit the culture on R'kos planet, which I'd been curious of since book one, as well as a cameo from Jathan from book one. Another thoroughly entertaining read. I look forward to reading book 3 soon.

With Alien 'n' Outlaw I had the exact opposite problem than with Spice ‘n’ Solace - I liked the beginning, but had isses with the ending.

Content warnings include: violence, homophobia, misogyny, trans excluding language, sex on-page; mentions of abusive parent, child running away from home to live on their own.

This started out great as a human meets alien adventure romance.
The aliens were more humanoid that I would have liked but just alien enough to satisfy what I want from sci-fi books.
It helped that the alien culture was very different - except I could barely enjoy it, because Darien, the human character, was so uncomfortable. Which was my issue with the ending. I liked what was happening, but Darien didn't, which didn't make it enjoyable to read. I wish he had been more open to the new culture, even if I can understand his discomfort (like, I would be soooo uncomfortable in that particular culture too.)

It also felt like some threads of the plot were left unexplored and kind of fizzled out, with a vague "oh year we'll fix it" in a side sentence, which also wasn't very satisfying to read.

I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as the first one but I did still like it. I loved the first part with Darien and R'kos (Ricky) were on the run and heading out to the different planets. It was fun and interesting and I liked the relationship between the two. I have to admit the physical differences that R'kos had were interesting to say the least. I wasn't as crazy about the part of the book where they ended up on R'kos homeworld. Talk about some interesting cultural differences. I liked Darien but he was a bit too altruistic for a smuggler and I would have liked him to be a bit more on the gray side. I enjoy this and would definitely read more when I'm looking for a fun sci-fi alien book.

The Galactic Alliance series are outside of what I normally read, but I'm happy to say I really enjoyed them. Sci-fi isn't usually what I reach for, but I seriously love the characters. R'Kos and Darien's story had action, adventure, sex and romance. Even though these books focus a lot on their erotic escapades, their story is so much deeper than sex. It's about them accepting their wants and desires even if they're surrounded by people who don't understand their love. Even though they are so different from each other, R'Kos and Darien find a way to be together and I just love that!

Ok, well that was different…not bad, but certainly different. I very much enjoyed the first book in this series and was looking forward to the second. While I didn’t like it as much it is still a very fitting sequel and builds nicely on the first. We get to learn a lot more about the Ankylos and their nature’s in this one, and well you just might want to hang on to your hats with this one boys and girls.

R’kos is the youngest son of the Ankylos’ emperor. He was appointed as the ambassador to the last trade talks with the Galactic Alliance. That meeting changed everything for R’kos. He’s always been a little different than the rest of his siblings, less of the hive mind, more indepenedent. As much as he loves his family the humans fascinate him. But at his last meeting with Jathan One-Moon when he smelt Jathan’s mate’s scent on his skin, he knew that there was more out there that he wanted to explore. His people’s eye sight is not the best and they’ve learned to rely on their sense of smell to determine many things for them, that scent was too alluring to pass up and R’kos is determined to explore what he can with these humans, even if it means sneaking away.

Darien is on the run and while it may be for a good cause, pissing off one of the worst mob bosses on the planet probably wasn’t the smartest idea. Stealing from him might have worked out ok if he hadn’t stuck around for a little action between the sheets and got himself found out. Now he’s on the run and knows his ship is going to be watched, taking off might be a little difficult. Still none of that will even matter if he can’t loose his pursuers first. When some stranger in the bar decides to help him out, well he’s not going to be picky, he’ll take all the help he can get. Finally seeing what’s under the disguising hood, well that certainly knocks him on his ass but good.

I loved the first half of this book. I really enjoyed R’kos, or Ricky, and Darien getting to know each other, being on the run and exploring the stars together. I didn’t love the second half quite as much, ok so really it was probably more like the last quarter. While the world building was really interesting and the ideas put together for R’kos homeworld were fascinating, I felt like the story kinda took an abrupt left turn. I was all in up until the point they landed on Ricky’s planet. Somehow that killed the ending for me. I get the reasons for it and all, but I don’t even know why, I just didn’t like it.

Now, that being said the, shall we say, physical attributes that Ricky is blessed with…OH MY WORD!!! Licorice may not be my favorite flavor, but still wow… I was more than a little stunned at the uniqueness of those alien adaptations. Still the possibilities…my brain takes many a love trip down that road. Still I don’t want to give away too much in that respect…suffice to say, read it, I’m sure you’ll be intrigued. Fascinating concept. Hmmmmmm….*drool*

I loved the sweet soul that is the real Darien. While his actions to get what he needs to help people may not be the most righteous, his results are. He’s an outlaw smuggler up there with the best of them. Even Han Solo wasn’t quite that altruistic despite his loveable bad boy soul. The bumbling, yikes your alien and I don’t know quite what to do with you, moments on both Darien and Ricky’s part were adorable. I enjoyed getting to see Jathan again, though I would have loved to see a Kaz appearance as well. :D

If I had one request walking away from this one...can we please have a Sven book! After two books with his appearance I’m more than a little in love with him already. He totally deserves to have his own HEA.

Altogether this was a wonderful little book. It didn’t have quite the grasp on my heart the first one did, but I still very much enjoyed my read. And hey, if I get a Sven story later I’ll absolutely be back. I really enjoy the writing style here and it flows along smoothly. I was sucked in throughout and will definitely be back for more by this author.

Fans of Spice 'n' Solace will probably love this story, but I had similar issues with this one as I did with the first, which is odd, since I love Burn's Cop Out. An enjoyable story with an interesting world, steamy sex, and a unique alien specie, but nothing that really jumped out and impressed me. I wanted to enjoy this story more than I did, and though I felt disappointed in some elements, overall it was a pleasant read.

Review
The writing wasn't bad, but it didn't thrill me. It felt clunky, and while it didn't detract from the storytelling, it didn't really enhance it either. It could be personal preference, but it didn't do it for me.

I liked the challenges that get raised for the lead males, but the solutions felt too easy, much like Spice 'n' Solace. Misunderstandings and a simple conversation clear up problems that needed more attention. Maybe I just like my characters to struggle. A lot.

I love different takes on alien sex, and this series already caught my attention with the triads, but the anatomy differences were especially appreciated. They are cute and almost funny out of context (...though most sexual anatomy things are...), but in scene they are pretty darn sexy! Also, from the descriptions, I think I want to rub up on R'kos. He sounds divine.

There was a good balance of science fiction and romance, and while romance/erotica is obviously the driving force, the science doesn't get ignored, although hard-core sci-fi fans would probably find it lacking. There is brief exploration of other planets and cultures, which was there to help explore parts of the characters that we may not have seen otherwise. I enjoyed those elements of it.

Requested this book for review.

While reading the first book I wanted it to be longer and explain more about the world building. I've got my wish in this one. R'kos, the Ankylos ambassador and Darien a human thief/small time criminal, travel together through the galaxy and while Darien explains the human colonies to his Ricky, the reader can catch up on this new world and learn more about the Ankylos race.

I thought this alien race quite fascinating, even though I hate licorice, and you have to read the book to find out, why I'm talking about licorice and the Ankylos.

For a novella it's well done, a lot of action, we visit the home world of the Ankylos, the character from the previous book make a brief appearance(the human ambassador Jathan One-Moon). I loved the characters and would have wished their relationship did take a bit longer to develop, but I understand that pages are more limited in a novel. R'kos or Ricky, like Darien calls him is very sweet character, but then again I did say I liked this race, he was my favorite, especially for defying tradition.

All in all I was well entertained and it gets points for creativity in creating an alien race!

I'd recommend this book for anyone who likes to read about human/alien mating and a romantic space adventure.

Book two is R'kos' story. As the son of the Ankylos Emperor, he is expected to settle down. Stifled by familial obligations and the hive-herd lifestyle on his planet, R'kos steals a ship and heads to Elora Ki to see if he can find Mr. Right. Darien is the Robin Hood of the Galactic Alliance. He and R'kos' paths cross when Darien is in trouble and R'kos offers to help. Together, they evade Darien's pursuers and sneak aboard his space shuttle. Traveling along Darien's route, R'kos and Darien's friendship quickly turns into passion.

I liked this book. Again, I found the world K.C. Burn created as well as the characters in it, riveting. I enjoyed both R'kos and Darien. I liked that their adventure allowed for a little more world building than we were privy to in book one. I'm intrigued by the Ankylos planet and it's people populace. I hope that we learn more about them and R'kos' family in the upcoming (I'm hoping for that too!) installments.

Bottom line: an exciting and entertaining sequel in what is fast becoming a mesmerizing series. I can't wait for book 3!

Thanks to Vio for bringing this one to my attention, it sounded good, but since aliens and sci-fi isn't my preferred genre I probably would have skipped it.
Darien is a 'criminal' but really more of a Robin Hood and a real sweetie, and Ricky is a big purple gentle giant ( no, not like Barney, thank goodness).
Both don't fit in, Darien left home at 15 and had to make his way in the world anyway he could and Ricky lives in a very ( really very) close knit society , with no personal or privat space , but he doesn't quite fit in there.
They fit well together though despite all their differences, but the real world, or worlds in this case don't make it easy on them. I got my HEA and wouldn't mind more of their journey together, because I'm sure there is more trouble for Darien to get in! :)
There is also the alien pysiology, which makes sex new and interesting for Darien!

I absolutely loved this story.

It has every ingredient I love. Alien sex and...uh. Okay, that's really all I needed to love this book to bits.

This story was far more interesting than the first book. I found R'kos to be utterly adorable, horny and clueless while Darien was amusingly horny.

One of the highlights for me is the different cultural perspectives between human and Ankylos. Specifically the concept of personal space and privacy.

Did I mention I loved this story? Everyone should read this!

I am glad that this series can be read as standalones as I read book 1 so long ago.
It was nice to be back, this time with Dairen and R'kos. I am so glad Darien called him Ricky as I couldn't decide how to pronounce his name.
It was a nice jaunt even if the ending did come so smoothly. Although not a big fan of angst, I thought the misunderstanding was cleared up a little too easily.

Love this series! I am now a big fan of KC Burn. The whole alien culture based on scent, the whole Galactic Alliance universe created here, wonderful and well thought out. Character building just as wonderful, and chemistry between Ricky and Darien, sizzling. I hope to see more and more of this series.

4.5 Stars - I really liked both characters and the fast pace of the novella. It was fun and sexy.

Even though this was book two, it can totally be read as a standalone, though now I want to read book one :)

Lol, a lavender alien with purple eyes and a self-lubricating, prehensile dick that tastes like licorice.
Fun to read. :)

Audiobook review:

Overall – 5
Performance – 4
Story – 5

Even better than the first book in the series.

I had to start this right away after listening to book one and I liked this story even better. The narrator changed and I usually find it a bit disconcerting when that happens in the middle of a series but these books easily standalone so it didn't bother me.

I think I should say that this audiobook was released in 2012 and the idea of what constitutes a good audio performance has changed quite a bit. So, considering that, I think the performance of this story was really quite good. Unless Chad Maxwell narrates under another name, this is the only audiobook he has on Audible.

This book has a lot going for it – a person of royal lineage who doesn't want to follow tradition, a space pirate who's really more like Robin Hood, and a sexual relationship of convenience that turns into so much more.

This story has some seriously hot scenes; I thought my headset might go up in flames. 😊 I loved how the Ankylos culture was so different and how disconcerting it was for Darien when the people showed no modesty and it caused him to blush and be uncomfortable.

Through the writing and the narration, I felt the connection between Darien and Ricky and how much they came to care for each other. I was quite disappointed to learn that book three isn't available as an audiobook. Fortunately, I have a copy of the eBook!

1.3 stars. I might have given it 2 stars, but, when they got on that planet it made me feel really suffocated....and then especially at around 84.5%, I got so pissed off by Ricky and everything that I had to stop myself from grinding my teeth and I felt myself flush with rage from head to toe. At that point, I wanted to give it zero stars, the ending made up for it a bit though.

Also, The whole alien anatomy and stuff made me feel kind of ill or squeamish.

This is the second book in the Galactic Alliance and I may have liked it more than the first. Neither book is my usual go-to but I found something to enjoy in both. This book had some humor in the form of Ricky (his human name) being alien and having alien tendencies such as lacking proper respect for privacy. I think the overall theme is acceptance and the love story is actually quite sweet.

Good, I found myself tuning out during the sex scenes, not sure why, since the two heroes have good chemistry. I like the world building, the descriptions, etc. Good.
