God, the sex between, Conor and Ethan, on pages 63, 64 was really bad. If we are considering, that Ethan said he would go slowly beforehand, because he saw it was Conors first time, we would expect a slow developed sex, but hell NO; the scene was cheap and BAD.
“I want you to fuck me hard, Ethan. Treat me like a cheap whore.” Okay, I get that there are different kind of kinks and a role playing games, but come on, a bit of a chat before such an action wouldn’t make it worse.
To be truthful, I was disappointed in this story. It wasn’t worth my time. The storyline was bland and undeveloped.

Hm. I’m disappointed.

At first it was nice. As expected, not the typical simplicity of the gay shifter genre. No heaps of money, easy living, no unquestioning pack loyalty, no fated mates or any such thing, and Ethan is smart enough to try to solve his problems with words rather than prolonging them by using force. He also directly makes fun of the usual clichés, but not in a heavy-handed way.

The fighting is appropriate to wolves, for once. Mercy is not something affordable, and flesh and fur gets ripped out in chunks. Good thing it can grow back. I suppose that (and a few other small things, such as strength and possibly agelessness) puts a check in the super-powered box, though.

My first issue actually occurred with the sex. Huh. No prep? No lube except on the condom? For a first-time catcher?
Yeah. As with Rook's Demon, this author’s brand if sex does not appeal to me. For example we again get that “treat me like your cheap whore” thing. I comprehend that some people are turned on by that, but if this crops up in every book by this author I’ll stop reading them, since for me it’s an intense turn-off. Plus the uneven sexual interactions kind of spill over into the relationship as such.

Conor really is clingy. At times it even seems like he might be delusional, although I think that would be the author failing to make the reader see what Conor sees in Ethan’s behaviour. The way he keeps thinking about how this is shaping into more than just sex and how Ethan has feelings for him, while we know Ethan’s thoughts and, well, any feelings seem very mild to me at best. It just does not feel balanced or comfortable.
By the end of the story I felt that no actual romance occurred here. Don’t feel the love at all. We have one needy guy who latches on to his first male lover, and one unfeeling guy who gets a sexual submissive out of it whenever he wants. Sure, he says the right words at the end; I just don’t feel them. Too little, too late.

Also, the story is a little slow. Normally I don’t mind that, but for a long while it felt like most of this consisted in me waiting for something to happen. Then it did and I was back to waiting. And so forth.

The writing, as well. It started out fine but entering the final third phrases are suddenly repeated, information imparted all over again after merely a few pages. Granted, this does not occur a lot.

*sigh* As I am writing this up I realize that maybe, when all is said and done, this was no more than merely okay. It seemed so much better for a long time that I’m surprised now. But when the romance in a romance does not work, the other issues gain weight.

Reviewed by Stacey Jo: Conor Black has just recently come out of the closet. He finds himself at a local bar called The Wolf Pack, where he meets sexy Ethan Stevenson who happens to not only be the owner, but half wolf-shifter and the pack leader. After a brief hookup in the back up the bar, neither one can get the other out of their mind and they soon find themselves in each other’s arms again. Unfortunately for Ethan, he has a pack member who is trying to take over as the alpha and he’s creating all kinds of trouble. Ethan has to confront this rogue pack member and his cronies, while trying to save Conor.

I found the story to be engaging and well-paced. It didn’t delve too deeply into the dynamics of the pack. Ethan also wasn’t super alpha male either which I don’t care for. I don’t read a large number of were books because I don’t care for the dynamics of the alpha but this story doesn’t have an overpowering alpha. He’s very respectful. Conor and Ethan are pretty hot together. They definitely care about each other. I’m looking forward to the sequel to see how things play out.

Bland werewolf fare with unrealistic sex and cheesy dialogue during aforementioned sex scene. As another reviewer has noted, this was Conor's first time, so what ensues is just ridiculous.
