When Daron’s father disappears through a mysterious Gate, Daron and his girlfriend, Avril, decide to risk their lives in order to search for him. But no one knows what lies on the other side of the Gate...
Rese has been imagining the fantastic since she was a child. She grew up wandering through myriad book worlds, and her taste for crazy tales eventually led to a BA in English from UC Berkeley and a PhD in Creative Writing from Royal Holloway, University of London. When she’s not writing about the impossible, she’s pursuing various interests, such as traveling, photographing, horseback riding, and piano playing; she especially enjoys sleeping and dreaming.
Ingress is a nice mix of science fiction and fantasy. For me, the story is reminiscent of the Stargate series with its own unique storyline. I was hooked from the first paragraph of chapter one. The Gates, ancient stone archways, are absolutely intriguing. No one knows who built these arches or where they lead to, but once you step through one of them, you disappear either into darkness or into another world.
Short fiction is a very tricky thing to write. An author has to include so many elements into such a small amount of pages without packing too much description and subplots into the storyline. I felt that Ingress was very well written and well rounded. I wasn’t bombarded with too many characters or too much description. It was a simple story that was nicely crafted from beginning to end.
There were nine of the mysterious Gates situated in different locations around the Earth. No one knew what their purpose was except those who had crossed through the gates, and they were never heard from again. When Daron entered the Pebble Beach Gate in search of his scientist father, he had no idea what to expect. Neither did his girlfriend Avril, who loved Daron enough to follow him into the unknown. If only she hadn't slipped from his grasp as he entered the Gate.
"Ingress" was an imaginative short story/novelette that introduced the fantasy world of Ranoa. I enjoyed the story very much, but to say much more would be a spoiler.
