Where to start?

This book is hilarious! That was one of the things I really, really loved about the story. It's just made me giggle with glee. It isn't as scary as some of the other books in the series (though the sharks made me both laugh and flinch), but it has some absolutely mind-blowing set pieces in the land of Faerie that just had my mind in a whirlwind of glee. Oh, my God! Seriously, so much fun, so much imaginative eye-candy, and such great fun humor.

This is a must read series for me. I can't put the books down once I start. I really, really love it. I can't wait for the final and fifth book to come out.

I highly recommend it!

You can read all of my reviews at Alluring Reads.

This series never ceases to amaze me! I have tried a few other fairy books since reading this J.L. Bryan series and have been so not interested every time. But, when I read these I am completely lost in the fairy lore and the wonderful writing. Fairyland is an epic adventure in just that, a Fairyland. In this one we get to go with Jason and Erin as they fight their way through marshmallow swamps and the Southward sea (which is full of sharks with attitude and mermaid pirates!)

All of my favourite characters were back in full force. Grizzlemore was as grumpy and sarcastic as ever and is still reigning as my favourite. We get to watch Erin and Jason's relationship grow as they venture through fairyland which was exactly what I was looking for in this fourth installment. Some of the mystery surrounding Erin is revealed but just a touch. J.L must be longing to drive me insane with anticipation as he is constantly giving tid bits of information but always just shy of enough to fulfil me. We are also treated to more of Aiode and Liadan's adventure to retrieve the stolen instruments. Aiode still had me laughing in this one as she figured out the inner workings of the man world and was exposed to rock n' roll.

For the fourth book in this series I will admit that I had worried about it being carried on and how it could be kept fresh and exciting. J.L. accomplished that, I've mentioned how fascinated I am with this authors imagination before and this one just pushed it even farther, there are so many new creations in Faerie; Sourgum & Sweetgum trees that spit gum as far as the eye can see, giant pork loving bog frogs and vicious swamp cobras made everything feel brand new. There is also a little twist in this one that, once it hit me like a slap in the face, I was kicking myself for not suspecting it because it makes so much sense.

I can't say enough about this series, you have to read them for yourself. They are fantastical, hilarious and written so well. This is a great addition to a series that I love and I can't wait for more!

*****FINAL RATING: 4.65 STARS*****

CATCHALL
I love these books. I really do. For one thing, they are incredibly addicting. Once I start, I never want to stop. For another, they continue to become better and better and I am almost afraid to see how spectacular the next book will be! I completely adored this installment. With excellent character growth and a beautiful plot, it irrevocably drew me in and didn't let me go until I had finished it in its entirety.

THE HERO
JASON
I have no idea how Jason continues to grow as a character, but he does. In every single book he becomes more mature but not so mature that he becomes boring. It's sweet how much he cares about his sister. Also, he is very clearly smart, which is awesome, since I'm tired of reading about idiot heroes who I will not name but anyway, moving on! Jason is probably one of my favorite heroes ever! (But do NOT tell any of my other favorite heroes that. They will get jealous.)

THE LOVE INTEREST
ERIN
I adore Erin. She's such a relatable and awesome character and maybe even one of my all-time favorites. She finally makes a choice I'm very happy with in this book and stands up for herself in a good way. She might even have the biggest character arc so far from the first book as far as I'm concerned. She's always been sweet, and I've always liked her, but she's definitely changed along the way, and in the most marvelous way!

THE OTHER BAND MEMBERS
MITCH
Mitch is ridiculous, but I love him. He's remained the same and different since the first book, and yes, I do enjoy saying things that don't make any sense. But, seriously, he's such a fun character. He's impulsive, but that only makes everything more fun! We can't all be focused all the time. That's boring.
DRED
Dred still remains the voice of reason, only not completely, which is nice. She's not nearly as boring as she used to be. I'd even say that sometimes, she can be fun! She definitely has a good head on her shoulders and usually manages to cleverly get the band out of tight spots. I really do like her, and learning more about her will be a pleasure.

THE LUTIST
AOIDE
Aoide is an awesome character, too. I adore her. She's no longer just a fluffy faery. Sure, she doesn't always make the smartest decisions, but if she did, she wouldn't be Aoide and would also be boring. I love her attitude and how she gets so excited over things! She's an adorable character. I definitely want to see the way she keeps developing because I know that she will, and what direction her life will take her in now.

THE QUEENSGUARD CAPTAIN
ICARUS
I love Icarus. I'm not entirely sure why, but whatever. That's so not important. He's actually not in this book very much at, but that's totally irrelevant. I so want to know more about him, and I think he's awesome. Awesome gold, actually. ;) Obviously he has his problems, but you know, they could be worse problems.

THE PLOT
So many twists and turns! It was impossible for me to guess what was going to happen next because there are so many times where the plot goes in a totally different direction than what I was expecting and random but awesome events happen, keeping me completely on my toes.

So many things are just so unexpected! Which is good, because nothing is more boring than predictability in a book. I love the element of surprise in every aspect of the plot, and the way I can never be sure what is going to happen next.

There are so many twists on traditional fantastical elements, too. (Werewalruses, anyone? Mermaids as pirates?) I probably shouldn't say anything, but I just can't resist. This stuff is too awesome not to mention. I absolutely adore it, and it's completely fascinating. It thrills me just to think about it. Reading about it is like being in heaven, or something.

Also, one of the best parts about this plot is that we see so much more of Fairyland than ever before! Until this point, there hasn't been a whole lot of Fairyland to see, but I knew when I saw this title that that was about to change! Now, there's so much more new stuff to see, and it's awesome! I actually won't even bother to try and describe how much I loved everything because I would not be able to do it justice.

THE ROMANCE
I love the way Erin and Jason's relationship grows in every book. It seems in this book like finally all the rough edges have been smoothed out, but I'm pretty sure there are more rocky times ahead! It's definitely a dynamic relationship and anything but boring. The spark between them is practically tangible and it only gets stronger as time goes on. It develops so realistically and prettily but not too smoothly ;)

THE WRITING
Jeff's writing has got to be some of my favorite ever. His description is beyond gorgeous. I can literally picture Fairyland and all these awesome places that he describes. That's always a good thing! And of course, the dialogue just…glitters. It does. I can't resist its pull. I love the way that every single person has a distinct voice. It sparkles in the most beautiful way. I love that. When an author has good writing, it makes my world happier. More gold.

THE ENDING
Fairyland ended on the perfect note. There's a definite cliffhanger, but it's not so cruel that I feel like, you know, doing something that's probably not legal. Yet, it left me wanting so much more! So much is resolved, and it's not dragged out for an necessary length of time. Instead, it moves on!

WRAPUP
I'm seriously not sure if I'll ever get enough of these books. They're awesome gold, and highly recommended! I'm not even kidding when I say that if you haven't read them yet, you should go and get started right now. I for one cannot wait to know what happens next!

FINE.

So, if you’ve read my previous reviews of books one, two and three of the Songs of Magic Series by J.L. Bryan then you know just how much I love this series! And guess what…book four, Fairyland, is my absolute favorite so far! Which means this book is awesometastic and fantabulous!

Picking up right where book three leaves off, Fairyland finds Erin and Jason in (wait for it)…fairyland! The evil dullahan has taken Katie into Faerie and Erin, Jason and Grizlemor go after them and find themselves up against strange and dangerous obstacles in this fantastical world. After making a deal with some clurichauns the three must go on a mission across fairy land in order to retrieve a special bug in exchange for Katie’s freedom. Meanwhile, in L.A. Mitch and Dred must prepare for a concert without half the Rioting Zebras, with Aoide and Liadan hot on their trail and just a little peeved. And everybody encounters some unexpected surprises.

Author J.L. Bryan really rocked this one! Packed full of fantastical adventure, jamming music, electric romance, awesome characters and superb world-building, Fairyland is the perfect mix of fun, fantasy, humor and excitement.

There’s quite a bit going on in this book, in both Faerie and man-world, but the story flows effortlessly and seamlessly. Bryan continues to bring an absolute wonderful and fresh sense of humor to every page. I love how laugh out loud funny these books are, without ever being cheesy or over the top. And the story is hip and current, while at the same time appealing to all ages.

I was so excited to explore the world of Faerie with Erin and Jason and I’m completely in love with this world! Bryan has created a very eclectic Wonderland meets Narnia kind of world that dazzles and sparkles with fantastical originality. This fairy world is as enchanting as it dangerous and as beautiful as it is forbidding, with frogs the size of mountains, volcanoes that spew jewels, clever pixies, hungry loan sharks (of the oceanic type), hippie mermaid thieves, rivers of chocolate and peanut butter cup flowers, oh my!

I loved journeying with Erin and Jason through Faerie, but Dred and Mitch’s run-in with Aoide and Liadan is as equally entertaining. I’m still Dred’s #1 fan and have a huge crush on this feisty gal! Aoide continues to fall in love with man-made music and there’s a lot of awesome music appreciation in this book, from Ella Fitzgerald to Buddy Holly to Led Zeppelin…for those about to rock, this book salutes you ;)

The love sparks continue to fly between Erin and Jason and there’s even some long awaited smoochin’. I really love these two together and how natural their relationship has progressed. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating, this is a romance that readers will believe in and be invested in completely! There’s also some long awaited exploration of Erin’s mysterious, otherworldly specialness…I won’t spoil it for you, but I’m totally loving the direction this part of the story is taking.

The book concludes with a little mystery and suspense and excitedly sets up the fifth book and I cannot wait to read the next book!

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: This series continues to captivate and enchant with its humor, thrills and wonderful characters and settings, and Fairyland hums with awesomeness. A MUST read book and series!

If you’ve been following my reviews of the books in the Songs of Magic series (Fairy Metal Thunder, Fairy Blues, Fairystruck), you’ll know that they have been one my favorite fantasy series to read. And I’m glad to see that JL Bryan has continued his streak with writing a better book each time he delves back into the world of Jason and the Rioting Zebras.

At the end of Fairystruck, the Dullahan has kidnapped Jason’s sister and fled to the land of Faerie after Jason and Erin’s failed rescue attempt. Now the guitarist and lead singer must travel deep into Faerie with the goblin Grizlemor in tow, hot on the trail of the Dullahan as she races away with Katie in a cage. But it’s not as simple as catching up with her and taking back his sister because Faerie is full of dangerous plants and wildlife, and the Faerie Folk that live there don’t say that “Humans are bad luck” for nothing.

Jason and Erin find themselves on a quest across Faerie to bring back a specific type of bug in exchange for Katie’s freedom. JL Bryan’s imagination has run wild as they traverse Faerie on their way to the island made entirely of iron. They encounter bubble gum chewing trees, literal loan sharks, were-walruses, pirate mermaids, acidic-glitter throwing pixies, candy plants, and that’s just a few of the wonderful things that the author has dreamed up and described in this book. The world of Faerie is so much more vivid and fun, and JL Bryan does a great job of taking what we see in our everyday world and twisting it in the most fun ways.

Left behind in Los Angeles to cover for Jason and Erin before the band is supposed to play a special live show, Dred and Mitch have to deal with the heat coming from their record company. It quickly morphs into a huge awareness concert for Jason’s missing sister–complete with A-list celebrities and bands such as Claudia Lafayette. But the fairy Aoide (who’s instruments Jason stole in the first book) and the banshee wolf Liadan are also in LA, and they’re hot on the trail of the Assorted Zebras to get the stolen instruments back. When all of these players meet up, some very surprising revelations are brought to light, which have repercussions reaching far into not only the band, but also into different factions of Faerie.

I give Fairyland a five out of five. This is a solid book in the series, and the character development is solid while the story is still moving along nicely. I’m especially happy with the way Erin and Jason’s relationship is evolving, while I did guess the surprise with Erin and Claudia earlier on in the series. This book is fast paced–especially the time that was spent in Faerie–and the world building is superb. The final bombshell dropped in the last chapter was something that I didn’t necessarily see coming, so bravo, Jeff–you fooled me with that one! I cannot wait for the next installment of the excellent young adult fantasy series.

*4 1/2 stars*

Before this synopsis for Fairyland was released the book cover appeared, and I fell in love immediately. I love the new designs for this whole series but Fairyland has to be my favourite one. Fairyland picks up straight after Fairystruck, with Dred and Mitch/Mick travelling from their cancelled rehearsal due to half the band being AWOL. The chapters alternate between the band, the faeries; and Erin, Jason and Grizlemor as they all take their own paths to find their target.

I really enjoyed reading Fairyland, more so than the previous books. With Jason and Erin we get to see more of Fairyland which I loved. We got to learn more about all the different creatures that lived there and the different things that come to life. My favourite had to be the Sweetgum and Sourgum trees, they had me laughing out loud at them. I loved the adventures Jason, Erin, and Grizlemor got up to and I am so glad that Jason and Erin got their act together.

I loved Aiode and Liadan's journey. Aiode was so clueless about the human world but it made her that much more hilarious and endearing. She was like a fish out of water in the human world, and considering the circumstances I think she coped very well. When the faeries and the humans are all finally together secrets are revealed that I had no clue about but my suspicions were right about another character and I was glad to finally see it in action.

By the time Fairyland finished I couldn't stand Mick/Mitch, he is getting far to big headed and thinks everything revolves around him. I hope he gets his reality checked soon and is pulled back down to earth.
I really don't want to say too much about Fairyland in case I spoil it for others, just know that it is a great instalment in the series and I am really looking forward to finding out what happens next.

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to J. L. Bryan.)
This is the fourth book in the ‘Songs of Magic’ series, and kicks off where book 3 left off. (Trying to avoid spoilers so some names will be starred ** out.)
Jason and Erin are in the land of fairy, searching for ***** who has been kidnapped by Mrs Dullahan, (the keeper of the fairy gate that Jason originally went through to steal the instruments), whilst Mitch and Dred are left alone on the set of their next big gig, trying to hold the band together until Jason and Erin return.
Meanwhile, Aoide, the lutist from the fairy band is making her way to find the band and take back the stolen instruments.
Will Jason and Erin find ***** in time? What will happen to the gig without a guitarist and singer? What is Mrs Dullahan’s game? Will Aoide ever get the bands stolen instruments back?

This was a rollercoaster ride of a story! The amount of strange things in fairy was just huge and so varied, from sabre-toothed ducks to rivers made of chocolate, unicorns, electric bugs, gumball trees, the ‘sickly sweets’ infection and boats shaped like ducks. It was totally nuts! (In a good way!)
I loved how the band was separated and each had their own thing to accomplish, I loved how Jason and Erin’s relationship moved forward, and I loved how more was revealed about several of the characters, including Erin!
This really was an imaginative and interesting story, and the questions raised in this book leave room for further dramatic reveals in the fifth book ‘fairyvision’!
8 out of 10.

Grammar/editing: ungraded – since I was listening instead of reading, I don't know, but Albert said it was well done.

Albert (my son) and I have continued this series as a read-aloud in the car on our way to and from work.

We're back with The Rioting Zebras, Jason, Mitch, Erin, and 'Dred. This is the fourth book in the series and picks up right where FAIRY STRUCK left off. Do not read this until you have read the first three books and in order. The Rioting Zebras are hosting an awareness-fundraiser in support of Jason’s missing sister. Jason is certain that the Dullahand knows what has happened and leaves Los Angeles and returns to Chippewa Falls so that he can look for her sister. Erin volunteers to accompany him. Together they re-enter Fairyland in an attempt to locate and rescue Katie. Where is Katie? Can they rescue her without being captured themselves? How will Mitch and ‘Dred handle the benefit without Jason and Erin? Will the fairies locate them and retrieve the instruments?

We have continued to love this series. Both of us were laughing out loud throughout this. This series has, so far, been very good. Mr. Bryan writes terrifically detailed descriptions that bring this fantastic world alive.

Albert hasn’t had near enough hours the last few weeks, so we haven’t started the fifth book, but hopefully soon! This series is not lagging. It is not becoming boring or predictable. Keep on writing J.L. We’re loving this!

First off, I love this cover. I think it's funky and awesome in a sparkly kinda of way. That's a good thing, in case you were wondering. Sparkly stuff is good when it's shooting out of your guitar. Or off your wings. I speak from experience. But that's neither here nor there. What I'm trying to point out is that I like the cover. It works. It works very well.

As for the book, I love love LOVE how Faerie is slightly off kilter and when someone says they have corn and bean soup they really mean candy corn on the cob and jelly bean soup. J.L. Bryan's imagination is like the kid in the candy store who bounces from bin to bin and wants to put his hands in all the sticky goodness. It's frantic and wild and a total trip to experience.

Without giving away too many details, things are definitely moving forward in the overall arc. Jason and Erin discover some interesting truths while on the hunt to rescue Jason's little sister, Mitch and Dred are dealing with missing half their band with a huge live show looming over them, and Aoide is within reach of her stolen instruments when a bombshell drops on her. Things happen, guys. BIG things.

This book ended on a suitably ominous note and it looks like Faerie and all her creatures are going to be in for a rough ride. As for me, I can't wait to see what diabolical critters J.L. Bryan comes up with next. *cue evil laugh*

There is a ton of stuff going on. The story starts with the Rioting Zebras going to have a fundraiser but things are starting off bad when half the band is missing. Mitch/Mick and Dred are trying to do the concert while Jason and Erin return to Chippewa Falls to try and find Jason’s missing sister Katie. They then have to travel to Fairy to find her.

At the same time Liandan and Aiode are still navigating the human world trying to find the stolen instruments but are getting closer to finding them. They are still trying to figure out the different things they run across but they do catch up to the kids.

This series just keeps getting better and better. I love how Jason and Erin are starting to get closer with their relationship. Mitch/Mick is driving me up the wall with his attitude. I hope to heck he gets knocked off his high horse soon. I adore Aiode and how she reacts to everything she comes across. It’s like watching a kid in a candy store. Plus there are a ton of things happening and some secrets revealed.

I can’t wait to see what happens in Fairyvision. This is a great series that will appeal to any age.

I received this book from the author, a long time ago, for free in exchange for an honest review.

Fairyland is the 4th book in J.L. Bryan’s Songs of Magic Series and each book draws the reader farther and farther into the world that the author has created.

This book has the reader spending a lot more time in Faerie than any of the others before it. Bryan holds nothing back with his imaginative descriptions and takes readers on a tour of a world that is as amazingly beautiful as it is terrifying. This author’s Faerie is not a place that I would want to go to alone.

I really like where the series is headed. Of course, that may have to do with all the quality time that Erin and Jason are FINALLY spending together. It’s more than that though. As silly as the story gets at times, there is still a lot of ‘meat’ to it. A lot of secrets are revealed. Some of them I saw coming and some of them I didn’t. There are also some alliances formed that should prove to be interesting. From where Fairyland ended, there is still a lot more to come. I can’t wait to see what J.L Bryan has in store for our band of characters next.

It's always a good day when I get to download a new Songs of Magic book to my Kindle. Since my second daughter was born 12 weeks ago, I've been a bit out of the loop, so when I found out that Fairyland was out and that I could download and read it, it gave me a serious happy.

This one is a bit more of a roller coaster than the last one, even though they've all been action packed. I'm thrilled that we were given a chance to explore the Fairy world with a set of Human eyes, and that we were able to find out more about certain characters (some of which we had inklings about in the previous works).

There's a lot of comedy along with the adventure and action. It keeps the pages turning. I found myself reading too fast sometimes, and having to go back because I'd missed bits of the action! That's how much I love these books! :)

I highly recommend this series to everyone I know who's looking for something to read, and will continue to do so.
