I read this before reading the Deadly Hallows and I remember it was even weirder when Snape turned out not to be a bad guy after all - relatively speaking. It's fanfiction but it was still very good and I'll probably read it again now that it's been almost 10 years. Can't give it the 5 stars because JKR!
--- Update ---
I read this again in Jan 2016 and it's still good... for fanfiction. In fact, the writing is great and the plot is great. I'd love to read something original by Melinda Leo.
There's too much focus on Harry/Ginny for my liking and there are things the protagonists do that are out of character for them, as we know them by JKR. The one that was best depicted is Ron in my opinion.
I'm astonished at the similarity in plot between this and the Deathly Hallows as both explanations for Harry make sense.
Finally aside from the fact that this is fanfiction, it's a young adult book more that it's a children's book because there's too much focus on relationships.
I read this book before the real one came out. But wow, it was awesome. Now everytime i pick up the HP series, I read ML's book too. Its hard to differentiate her writing from JKR's. The plot and horcrux theme is in direct continuation with the story line and there are hardly any inconsistencies. It draws heavily from the previous books and even predicts some horcruxes correctly (if my memory serves me right).
The only regret you will have after reading this book: You might sometimes mix the 2 story lines, its that good :P
I started reading this by a mistake. I thought I was reading a parody of Harry Potter, but it was a serious fanfiction. Later I found out the one I wanted to read didn't have the "THE" in the title.
This book was great as fanfictions go. It was notably different than JK Rowling's style, more romantic, but it was a complete work. And considering it was published before Deathly Hollows, I'm surprised of how much of the canon Melindaleo has predicted.
Of course, the canon is much more realistic in Harry Potter universe. There are things in this book that feels like a Deus Ex Machina. The overall magical progress of the main characters is one of the weak points of this book IMO. But the worst part for me was the 3 paragraph at the end of the epilogue. Why?!? Just why?!
TL;DR, if you like Harry Potter fanfictions, this is one of the better ones.
Impressive that the author wrote this before the 7th book came out and she guessed so many things correctly? But, couldn't get super into the plot, even though I like this author's writing style overall!
I read it a long ago. After knowing it was not written by J.K. Rowling, I was a bit unhappy. A writing of this caliber should not go unnoticed. Truly, it almost fooled me into believing that I was indeed reading the last book in the Harry Potter series. Then the real 7th HP book came and I forgot all about this fanfic. Recently, I remembered and searched for it again. (I've found it! :) )I will definitely re-read it and try to give a review.
Really great read! I love that its our favourite characters coming to life to fight the good fight one last time! I hope there is more fan fiction out there. Well written, full of adventure, some sauciness, and a good dose of magical mayhem. Have fun reading this classic twist.
An utterly genius story. Melindaleo managed to correctly deduce so many things, it's difficult to believe this story was published before Deathly Hallows!
The first time was when I was about 14, had it in printed form as a crude folder, I binge read it in 4 days, it was that good.
The second time was while in class, in pdf form.
Let me start by saying that you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between this book and the official last HP book.
I could write a very long review here and sing all of its praises, but I’ll keep it short-ish.
I’ll get the parts I didn’t like out of the way first
Every character is well rounded but some of their traits are a bit exaggerated: Harry constantly saying that he is fine and being overly hard-headed. Ron becoming stupid when food is in the scene. Hermione being too much of a pain in the ass sometimes regarding “swear words”, manners and other unimportant aspects, too nit picky.
I know that these traits defined them in the official novels, but here they are a bit overused.
There, that’s basically all that I found that I didn’t like.
The good aspects are the rest of the book: There’s good character development, Harry and Ginny’s relationship is wonderfully developed. Something that is even better than the official book is how the trio acts their age. They drink, have makeout sessions, and generally behave like the adults they are.
The use of the magical world is done almost expertly, developing the story in various places like Grimmauld Place, The Ministry of Magic, Hogwarts, caves, etc.
As a Draco fan I was pleasantly surprised that he had a much bigger part in the story, especially towards the end.
The Dursleys make a surprise appearance, too.
Voldemort is scary and the battles are well structured and described, I was absolutely invested in the whole thing from start to finish.
Another great part was the ending. I won’t spoil anything, but I liked how we got more to the story after the big showdown and not just a one-page “and they lived happily ever after”. We get real closure and even a long, heart warming epilogue.
To sum up: I wouldn’t be the same without this book, it gave me a much better ending than the official one. There is virtually nothing wrong with this wonderful 700 page awesomeness. If you like HP even a little bit, you need to read this.
This is just amazing. I had a copy of this for years, received in stead of original HP7, a few days before the release. Once i realised this is fake, i had not read it coz i would have messed up the storylines in my head. When i finally read it a few days ago, i felt this was a much better story than the original.
Ofcourse, the hallows are the super-magical items in the original while here she makes Harry larger than life. Some predictions are spot on, you start to feel if she wrote this after the original or she had any access to it? the interpersonal details she gives, the treatment of feelings and relationships is amazing. You can think of parts of this story as being what was happening in Harry's mind while he went along in the original book.
I love the way this is written I loved the adventures, the drama, the twists-and-turns that this story took
There was a lot of focus on relationships but that was okay, because I knew it wasn't the real thing so it was fine :)
This was a good good story and even though the ending is a hell of a cliffhanger and scary in its own right, it makes sense with the way that particular character was written :)
Edit (re-read): still really liked this tbh And with that my reread is over ☺️
There was nothing special about this fanfic, I remember it came out before the actual finale and I was highly disappointed by this. The story never felt in line with actual series and the writing style was noway near satisfying. All those kissing and romance amidst the serious quest of horcruxes annoyed me. The only thing I liked was the way harry defeated Voldy, that was quite unique and the theory was actually worthy of actual HP series. Apart from that below average stuff
