Born in the UK, I migrated to Australia in my early twenties. It was only when I retired to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland that I wrote my first novel.
The Anna Davies Mystery series comprises five books, Missing in Egypt, Missing at Sea, Missing in London, Missing in France and Missing in Australia. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083RQ2QDG/
If you ever want to visit Egypt, this is a good start to armchair travel, as the author takes the reader on an exciting journey of probable circumstances that could really happen. Adventure, romance, drama and mystery all wrapped up in a short read of 127 pages. Overall the read included descriptions of landmarks in Egypt which made me reminisce about the good times I had in Egypt and after this read, I long to return again and explore some more sites mentioned in the story.
The author has produced a riveting book with an investigator that we can all appreciate! Join Anna Davis on her quest to find a missing person in Egypt and uncover a mystery of a hidden tomb of treasures. The quality of the writing is poignant and reflective, a great read for the summer! The plot took a few twists that I wasn’t expecting.
When a man goes missing, an adventure is born. Rita Lee Chapman’s Missing in Egypt is both smart and engrossing. It’s a classic mystery to its core with an air of Indiana Jones. Great for any Agatha Christie lovers out there!
Anna Davies is presented with an intriguing problem at the very start: a plea for help from a very attractive Egyptian man, Kareem, whose brother, Ramy is missing in Egypt. Anna has a new job as PA to the Minister for Foreign Affairs. She passes on the message and the reader is plunged into the world of Australian politics, which is either familiar to Ms Chapman or extremely well researched since Anna, in the absence of the minister’s wife, attends the inaugural dinner following the state opening of parliament by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988.
Kareem appears again after an abortive trip in search of his brother and Anna becomes his lover. The scene is set for the couple to fly to Egypt together and, amongst vivid pictures of bustling Cairo and Abu Simbel, the last place Ramy was known to be, a trail of mystery, hidden treasure, tragedy, and murder, unfolds.
Many times I was sure I knew what would happen next, and I was always wrong. The end is impossible to guess. Ms Chapman’s debut novel is a four star read. Don’t miss it, or the five star Dangerous Associations that she published more recently.
I chose this book as I am in Egypt at the moment. I always try to read something on an Egyptian theme when I am actually there. I enjoyed the story. Some odd phrases like "he was speaking Egyptian" several times. The language spoken in Egypt is Arabic; Egyptian Arabic, but still Arabic". A nice piece of fantasy and adventure. A light hearted, fun read.
I thought that the plot idea was good and well thought out, but I don’t think it was delivered as well as it could have been. While I found the pieces of information regarding Egypt and Australia and their cultures quite interesting, and I liked seeing the story from both Anna’s and Ramy’s point of views, I felt that there was a serious lack of description, particularly in the opening page. As a result, the story failed to grab my attention, and I struggled to read it.
I also felt that the dialogue seemed a bit wooden and unbelievable at times, and often repeated information from the main body of text. Because of the lack of description, and the unbelievable dialogue, I found it really hard to engage with the story, and could not award this book any higher than 1 star.
With twists and turns in mysterious Egypt, Rita tells the story from two points of view -- her heroine Anna, and Ramy, the missing person. Her insights into the culture and ancient Egyptian history added to the story. The additional bonus of Australia, especially from the political side was interesting as well. The book was well-paced, and the author was able to keep the suspense alive until the end.
I'd been looking forward to reading this book for some time and it did not disappoint. I've long wanted to go to Egypt an, by golly, this is the next best thing. The author took me on a trip of a lifetime - armchair travelling at its best because the descriptions were engrossing and vivid. The author weaves romance and mystery expertly and kept me guessing to the end. Definitely a recommended read.
I really enjoyed this story. I liked Anna’s strong character and sense of adventure very much. The other characters were very interesting, and the locations varied and wonderfully described. I could imagine the places clearly in my mind, especially Canberra where I lived and worked for a few of years. The story itself flowed easily and kept my attention all the way. Now that I have found this author, I will be reading more of her books.
Received book as a giveaway through Goodreads. Fun quick weekend read that kept my interest with some romance and a lot of suspenseful twists and turns. The author does a good job describing the tombs and the rich history of Egypt. Great job on a first novel Rita, thanks and keep up the great story telling!
It's quite a good story when you get into it - It seemed to take a while to start - I did enjoy the action towards the end - saying what would make this a spoiler and I don't do those - not fair to the author or other readers.
I ‘m always looking out for new authors or something a little different from the usual murder mysteries that fill the bookshelves.
Missing in Egypt by Rita Chapman met both criteria. The story grabbed me in the first few sentences as Kareem Hasif reports his brother Ramy missing in Egypt to Anna Davies, who works for the local politician.
We get to know a lot more about Anna, who’s a determined and organised woman and Kareem, who is an attractive and cultured client, keen to find his lost brother. It’s the start of a journey which will take them to Egypt in a journey that will challenge them in more ways than they can imagine. At the heart of Ramy’s disappearance is a pharoah’s tomb that only a handful of people know about. Previous generations uncovered the tomb and took artefacts. Most of them died shortly after, fuelling beliefs that they were killed because of a curse.
Someone wants to find the tomb and its treasures and will go to any lengths to get what they want. With strong characters, beautifully described settings and plenty of twists, not to mention some romance, Anna's adventure and quest to find Ramy and the people behind his disappearance tests her to the limit.
And just when it all seems to be coming to a satisfactory conclusion, there’s a final twist that leads to an exciting climax.
If you enjoy a good mystery, that’s as much about the characters as the plot, all set in some exotic locations, I hope you’ll enjoy this novel as much as I did.
Missing in Egypt (Anna Davies #1, by Rita Lee Chapman
A mystery story that begins with a narrative about a segment of the Australian government but steadily increases the stakes through a romantic relationship between Anna Davies and an attractive Egyptian man Kareem Hazif. Kareem learns that his brother Ramy is missing somewhere in Egypt. Kareem decides to leave Australia to investigate his disappearance. Anna, motivated by her love for Kareem, goes with him. Chapman's characters are likable because they do not pretend to be superstars. Ordinary people caught in the middle of a crime which has international consequences, they do what must be done to survive the ordeal. The mystery plot, although relentless, takes second place to the strength of Anna's personality in dealing with a welter of emotions: love, bewilderment, vulnerability, danger, deception, grief, acceptance, and eventually, hope for a new beginning. This is my first book by Rita Lee Chapman, and I wasn’t disappointed. The descriptive passages of ancient Egypt took me on a virtual journey to the place I’ve always wanted to visit. The vivid imagery and fast-paced flow made me feel as if I were part of the action as these fascinating events unfolded. A blend of mystery, politics and romance with plenty of plot twists, it kept me turning the pages. Nice twist at the end and totally unexpected. I definitely recommend Missing in Egypt.
