This is a zombie-less zombie story that lives up to its title, Origins. Our story begins with our young hero, more of an asshole at this early stage in the game, being shipped off to his dad, a nighttime security guard in San Diego at a pharma company, for the summer. Mummy and the new Hubby have decided that Junior is in need of a reality check now that's he graduated uni but hasn't a clue what to do except to chase his on-again, off-again girlfriend. And take his blue and pink pills for his depression.
And Junior gets to spend a whole car ride with his dad, whom he hasn't seen in eight years, before dad is off to work and Junior is left alone in his apartment with a six-pack and some pizza. And.... ...and dad doesn't return from work. What's an out of town Junior to do?
And the answer to that question is this book, as Junior's decisions (I really have to remember his name, damnit) plot the course of this story, which lead up to an uber-secretive pharma company with designs for world domination.
Genetic experimentation. Population control. Canada. It's all here.
I typically don't care for zombie apocalypse books that spend a lot of time explaining how the began, but I've been reading so much crap lately that anything half decent is suddenly awesome!!
The scary aspect of this story is that it really could be true. Okay, maybe there is not a massive hydra-headed collective of genetic engineering of which one head is located in San Diego-but given the incidents of this story, and the explication by one of the scientists involved, it’d be very surprising if something on this order never actually occurred.
The second surprising aspect is that this first in the series is pretty much devoid of those lovable moaning, groaning, brain-dead shufflers. Yep-we scarcely get introduced to a real zombie here. We do get some action, a lot of explanation (that’s what really scares me-how true it could be), and we also get a lengthy preview of the next in the series (with a lot of action!) I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep at night anymore, though, for wondering: what if there is a megalomaniacal conglomerate, secretive and unseen, out there somewhere stealing the homeless and those not-to-be-missed, working marvels of genetic and bionanotech engineering? What if? Makes me afraid to sleep and even more afraid to wake up…. Don’t miss this one-or you won’t be forewarned…
I downloaded this ebook because it was free and not many pages, so I thought it would be a short read to catch up my annual Goodreads goal. Well, I was surprised that I really enjoyed it! It is a sci-fi set in present day and is actually a pretty realistic premise. A clandestine corporation with roots in world leadership has come up with a contagion that can wipe out big numbers of people in an area, but then be controlled so it cannot advance. This way it stops world overpopulation. It can be used in selected areas, then stopped. It is a form of germ warfare that could actually be real today, which is what makes the story so interesting.
I loved it and I have already downloaded the 2nd and 3rd books in the series. Last night when I let my dogs in I was actually a little jumpy from the rustling of the trees and the darkness - haha.
The reason for 4 stars is the lack of editing for spelling/grammar/syntax which is a little distracting. Nevertheless, it is a great read!
I did not like this book. The title says zombie origins, there were no zombies in it!!. Once the guy went to visit his dad and found out that his dad is a security guard at a pharmaceutical company, the author then was cramming in a rush, mind you information on the virus. I found myself speed reading to be able to finish this book. I gave it 2 stars for the cool zombie picture on the cover, that is the only zombie in this book!! A very lame book, very lame. I wasted my time reading it!!
This was an Ok read. It was fast paced with plenty of action, and who does't enjoy a story with a good conspiracy? I felt that the plot line was a little derivative (but then it's hard to be original with zombies I guess), but my big complaint is I found it hard to engage with any of the characters in the story, so in the end wasn't particularly concerned about who met a grisly end!
This book was quite enjoyable. Since it’s an origin story there isn’t zombie action but it’s entertaining to read how it all starts. I’m going to go purchase the next book after this review. I’m excited to see where this next book takes the story too. I don’t say much because I don’t like to leave spoilers. This is a good book, but don’t take my word for it…READ IT
Short, action packed story beginning the Zombie Fever by B.M. Hodges series. Would have liked to have been introduced to the main character Tomas a bit more, but definitely a great start – made me want to continue the series (downloaded book # two right away and so far that looks promising as well – it's a full length story)
