Okay, time to breathe as much as I wanted; this is going to be a long, craze-infused ride... I don't think I'll have enough lung capacity to endure what's to come. BUT HELL YEA, LET'S RIDE IT!

What I feel for Ayanami... it doesn't go with words... like "like" or "want to go out with." It's as if... she's a part of me that was torn away a long time ago...

Freaky. I don't want to think more about it but remember when they're so in sync on the previous volume, like instantly without a practice together? And remember something like Rei is the better version of Shinji or something like that that I completely ignored on the earliest volumes?

Oh wow great volume! Action, funny scenes, emotions and dark secrets... I wonder what is going on with that Adam and Eva things.. and what is the Angel doing there in NERV headquarters. ..and about Shinji's mother. ..And finally what did Shinji see when he was a child?
As much as mad scientist parent cliche got old, I can't help but love this kind of stories!
My only complaint is the interrupted Shinji&Asuka kiss (which was awesome in anime! )

So, I've been reading the Evangelion series on and off for awhile now, really unsure of the whole thing. I had heard from several people I know that the series was just amazing, and that it was a really deep work of art. I didn't really see it, though; to me the whole thing seemed like just your average "giant robots vs. monsters" story.

That all changes with this volume. I get, now, why people rave about this series; it's much more than a giant robot series, but instead an examination into the relationship between technology and spirituality, as well as being an exploration of heterodox Christian mysticism, Kabbalah, and Buddhist spirituality. Tall order for a giant robot series, but pulled off well.

Otro tomo increíble con un montón de desarr0llo de trama y personajes, lleno de situaciones divertidas y drama profundo. Creo que este tema se trata básicamente de las relaciones entre las personas, de la dualidad que suele existir en los distintos aspectos de la vida de una persona. Esa dualidad está impresa en muchos temas de Evangelion: Divinidad/Humanidad, Ciencia/Tecnología, Ritsuko/Misato, Rei/Asuka, son todos opuestos que de alguna forma en esta historia se complementan y generan dinámicas muy interesantes.

Ahora recuerdo por qué Kaji me empezaba a caer bien, y es porque introduce de lleno la trama de la "conspiración" de NERV, que es mi favorita de toda esta serie (principalmente del manga). Que lindo leer este manga de nuevo, es excelente.

this series tackled a bit more of Misato's past and her complex relationship with her father. in a Freudian lens, her attachment manifests in her gravitation towards Kaji. furthermore, this volume revealed the inner workings of NERV. there's a scene that takes place in an aquarium where Kaji reveals to Shinji (after his stumbling on Adam), the link between NERV and SEELE and underscoring Gendo as morally ambiguous. I loved the foreshadowing and subtle hints dropped throughout the volume on Rei's character. Shinji constantly reflects on their relationship and describes it as a connection of souls. the anticipated disclosure of Ayanami's true identity makes even more sense when we realize it was the reason why their two Evas were coordinating so well.

Ich liebe diese Geschichte! Auch, wenn die Hintergründe auf den ersten Blick nicht leicht zu verstehen sind. Selbst beim 3.(?) Lesen werfe ich immer noch die Zusammenhänge zwischen den Engeln, Adam, Eva und Lilith durcheinander... wie die Charaktere es eben auch tun. Gut, dass es für solche Fälle ein Evangelion Wiki zum Nachlesen gibt.

This is where I start to waver a little bit. I really think the Asuka/Kaji/Misato stuff is just the worst. Thankfully Misato and Asuka are great characters on their own. And there's plot intrigue happening too, so I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt for now. We'll see where the next volumes take us.

{2nd readthrough}

The Story: While maintaining a degree of listlessness by experiencing shades of what might be considered normality in this universe (friends, school, parties, love triangles, first times, monsters-of-the-day, times-of-the-month, etc.), this volume also starts exploring the dark secrets of NERV. It feels like a bittersweet closing chapter on the "happy" third of Eva. And even though this arc has a solid button on it, it's different from the four others in that we are just starting to uncover a whole new can of worms about the folks pulling the strings.

This is also the most nostalgic volume for me. When Viz was releasing the singles in the early aughts, meaning Eva was packaged like standard American comic books (similar to the colorized Akira), I had picked up stages 27, 28 and 30. Imagine being me, and the first exposure to the series was 'The Party'. What might have felt like a light-hearted series was all going to go downhill from there. And the perfect-ish unison we finally get from the pilots defeating Sahaquiel (the 7th Angel in the manga versus the 10th in the anime as noted by the dossier). Yeah. Not going to last. Missing out on the in-between Stage 29, Centopath may have also given me a skewed first impression. If I would have seen how callous Gendo was, and at that point in my life, I don't know if I would have been turned off by it or loved the series even more. In any case, what I may have ascertained from Shinji and his father's relationship in the surrounding chapters had no bearing on my need for more.

Questions raised: (1) Asuka choking Shinji seems throwaway gag during Misato's promotion party. However, this chapter was released after End of Evangelion. Methinks this might be a humorous attempt at foreshadowing? (pg. 29) / (2) It's a trope as old as anime: Why does Misato look the exact same during the events of the Second Impact, which was 15 years ago as she does now? Sadamoto never changed anything about her appearance, even though other characters get that level of detail. For Eva, I expect more. Come on, Mr. Character Designer. (pg. 43) / (3) Page 179's panel 4 features another unbeknownst mystery woman, different than the one mentioned in volume 4's review. Us seasoned folk will recognize her, and this one will for sure have an important role to play in the future. Who is she? Not telling.

Quote appreciation! There were so many good ones. I did weed it down, but had to include way more than necessary at the same time.

1) You're so scrupulous... If you do your job, when you think it isn't right... how are you going to look people in the face? Let me know. - Ritsuko, to Maya; the first part seems condescending, but when she says, "Let me know," I feel like it's because her own doubts plague her. (pgs. 37-38)

2) All we talk about is work. He seems to care about me, but he's really thinking about someone else. I'm the one... for whom nothing is going to change. Rei, acknowledging Gendo's arms-length distance (pg. 80)

3) "You're just an old bitch." "The "old" part was uncalled for." - Misato to Ritsuko and her reply; Maybe I've been watching too much Drag Race, but the volley made me chuckle. (pg. 89)

4) "Stand on your own two feet, and walk." That was it. That was his advice to me. Those were his first and last words as a father. - Shinji (pg. 160)

5) "I'm just one of his pilots! There's no point in telling me!" "You're wrong. You have not just a right but a duty to know the truth. - Shinji to Kaji and his reply; our Shinji is subject to reactionary withdrawal, angered by his father for using him as a pawn, and Kaji, gentle but stern, encourages some soul-searching. (pg. 177)

Art appreciation!

1) We'll start with a half quote / half art hybrid. After Rei's failed attempt at making tea, Shinji attends to her burn and finishes the process. They share a drink. He warns, "It's a little bitter." Rei replies, "Yes... but it's warm." It's such a satiating little sliver of slice-of-life pie. Rei's heart really starts to beat in this scene, and she encourages Shinji to talk things out with his father. It's just a good Eva moment, and scenes like this really make me happy. It's more than just a panel or a quote; it's a moment, but the 4th panel on pg. 65 featuring Rei's soft smile while savoring her drink is very sweet.

2) The spread of the Second Impact on pages 44 and 45 is forever seared in my memory. 'Nuff said.

3) Even though there is a more emotionally charged panel with similar art of the aquarium on pg. 181, I dig the overall vibe from pages 172-173 (though my copy is slightly marred by grease stains). We just see Shinji and Kaji strolling down the freeway. Kaji's hair tussling. The grit. Kaji's shades, his cigarette. What's that sweet car they're cruising around in? A comfortable mood is created for the boys have some real talk in.

The Extras: No longer an Action Editon, these are now Viz Media Editions. In this rebranding we see our first glimpse of Naoki Urasawa's Monster on the back survey page. All that to say, is there anything remarkably different or substantial to note with the change? Nah.

If we weren't already made aware in his last afterward, the editor points out that Evangelion's manga had been releasing at the pace of molasses. In his self-portrait, Sadamoto is beating himself with those "lashes" he mentioned last time. This particular volume took two years to release. I can't talk. I can only hope for that level of productivity.

Grammar and spelling woes haven't popped up too much, but we've got some examples here. Luckily, there were all found in the supplemental material. (1) Sadamoto may be celebrate it in Shonen Ace with a special event. (2) [...] the waveform pattern of the Angels is 99.89% expresses information similar to that of the human genome. (See: Angel dossier.) I think there may be a smidge of misinformation, too. The Over the Rainbow, a CVN-75 which is the real-life designation for aircraft carrier U.S.S. Harry S. Truman, looks to be misattributed to Theodore Roosevelt. There were also some oddities. What was up with the lines in some of the text boxes, like with pg. 177, panel 2?

The dossier included is a nice brief of key terms and world-building history. It reminded me that the First Impact is the one that split the Moon from the Earth. So, thanks! I keep forgetting what are referred to as Impacts are publicly known historical events fed to the masses, and any human entanglement inciting such events is withheld.

Also, a Kabbalist's explanation of the -el suffix, from 'elohim', in an Angel's names supports the theory that they are not outsiders / alien lifeforms. El indicates that they were created for a specific purpose and seals any power that would exceed their creator wishes. If they were invaders bent on dominating the human race, why would they have been suppressed so?

Luego de presentarnos a cada personaje principal, poco a poco nos van contando la distinta relación que existe entre cada uno de ellos, y en este volumen, en especial la relación entre Misato y Kaji. Esta pareja eran dos jóvenes universitarios que se enamoraron y tuvieron una linda relación, pero por diferentes motivos, dejaron estar juntos, sin dejar el cariño que ambos se tienen. A medida que ellos recuerdan su pasado, Misato se sincera sobre que realmente sentía en ese momento, teniendo una gran reflexión sobre las relaciones; ella le menciona que terminó con él porque sentía que ella no era la única, siempre tenía la sensación que él iba abandonarla, y una de las cosas que más le aterraba era (o es) ser abandonada. Kaji se sorprende, debido que él pensaba que fue por las infidelidades y se sentía culpable por esto, así mismo le dice que él conserva esos dos años con ella como lo más preciado en su vida, y que siempre estará agradecido de haber estado con ella. Entonces Misato le dice la verdad, le comenta que su padre cuando era pequeña siempre estaba inmerso en el trabajo, tenía poco tiempo para su familia, y ella no era una prioridad. Se sentía desplazada, poco amada, y siempre con la sensación que su padre no estaría con ella. Pero en el momento más importante, en la situación más crítica de su vida, su padre estuvo ahí, para darle su último (y quizá primer) acto de paternal, salvarla del segundo impacto y sacrificando su vida para que su hija pudiera vivir. Por lo que ella sentía (o siente) que Kaji se parece a su padre; nunca se sentía querida por él, siempre sentía que iba a ser abandonada, y para no revivir ese dolor, para no tener que volver a pasarlo y sentir que no puedes volver a verlo, prefirió romper con él, por ese miedo latente que tenía. Estas reflexiones tienen tremendas repercusiones en nuestra vida, porque son los traumas nuestros principales enemigos para seguir adelante, el sentirnos solos, el de forma inconsciente alejar a las personas que amamos, y muchas veces en las relaciones que tenemos en nuestras vidas, no sabemos como enfrentarlas, porque proyectamos muchas veces en nuestra pareja nuestros mayores temores. Por eso el sentimiento de Misato es tan noble, es tan puro, porque en este estado de borrachera pudo decir lo que sentía, lo que realmente pasaba dentro de ella.

Por otra parte, presentan otra historia interpersonal entre dos protagonistas: Rei y Shinji, para posteriormente, una breve, pero importante, conversación entre Shiji y Ikari. En la primera historia nos cuentan como Shinji va al departamento de Rei, y ella se abre a compartir con él, quizá porque se siente agradecida por la preocupación que tiene él por ella, algo parecido a lo que siente ella por Ikari. Si bien no conversan mucho los dos, ella siempre que Shinji es sincero con ella, y eso lo valora. Dentro de la conversación, Shinji le menciona su malestar con su padre, y como él siente que eso va afectar de alguna forma a su sincronización con su EVA, ahí es cuando Rei le menciona que la forma más simple de solucionar esto es expresándola lo que sientes a tu padre, de esta manera, se va sentir mejor. Shinji se sorprende, porque Rei, la persona más introvertida en la historia, le da un consejo muy sincero y fraterno, por lo que siente que es importante intentarlo. Pero fracasa lamentablemente en su primer intento, llamándolo por teléfono, por lo que al día siguiente, el cual era el aniversario de su madre, va al cementerio donde está su lápida. Para sorpresa del piloto, se encuentra con el comandante, al frente de la lápida de la mujer que ambos extrañan. En la conversación que tienen ambos, su padre le menciona que debe dejar de seguir buscando cosas que no serán posibles, al fin de cuentas, ya no es necesario darle más vueltas, es importante que él continúe y siga su vida, y con sus propias convicciones. Poco a poco iremos entendiendo realmente porque el padre de Shinji le dice eso, pero sin duda lo que pasó con la esposa, es un evento clave para sentir que él se siente derrotado ante la vida, lo que no quita las ganas que tiene para seguir adelante con los distintos planes que tienen. La perdida de un ser querido es muy fuerte, pero la pérdida de su soporte es aun más fuerte. Eso fue lo que le pasó a Ikari, por eso después sabremos que realmente significa para él y que ha intentado de hacer. Así mismo, al final de este volumen tenemos una revelación aterradora, fría y cruel, un recuerdo que Shinji tenía guardado en lo más profundo y Kaji lo sacó poco a poco, para vaya entendiendo la verdad, qué realmente pasó la última vez que vieron a la madre de Shinji en una experimentación.

Finalmente, quiero destacar las historias sobre qué realmente es NERV o qué está ocurriendo en este universo, debido que el comandante Ikari nos revela que sabe exactamente cuantos serán los próximos ángeles que van a venir atacar. Así mismo, en otro hilo en paralelo, Kaji y Misato descubren una verdad sobre NERV, dado que ven a Adan, el primer ángel, el cual sería la clave para el Proyecto de Complementación, si bien esa información es cierta, finalmente lo que ven es a Lilith, pero eso lo sabremos más adelante. Veremos que nos depara este universo de ángeles y EVAs, pero poco a poco nos van enseñando la verdad.

This is a review of the entire series!

After the disastrous results of a cataclysmic event known as the Second Impact, an alien species known only as Angels terrorizes the last remnants of humanity. Young children are raised in military schools and trained to combat these godlike entities by piloting giant biomechanical mechas into battle. The story revolves around the personal struggles of the members of NERV, the shady organization responsible for the creation of these mechas; most notably the cold and calculated leader Gendo Ikari and his chronically depressed son Shinji.

The surface level story of Evangelion is deceptively simple. It appears to be a straightforward apocalypse story about the last survivors of humanity fighting back against an alien race that nearly drove them to extinction, but there’s a lot of depth in the background of the plot. There’s more to the Angels than meets the eye. NERV has a disturbing number of skeletons in its closet. And the few survivors in charge of fighting against the aliens have an abundance of mental scars in desperate need of being healed lest they destroy themselves before the Angels can get to them.

I love the subtle depth of the characters. Shinji appears to be a cold and distant boy with odd tendencies that are almost sociopathic in nature, but he turns out to be an extremely sensitive and anxiety-ridden teen who suffers from a lack of parental guidance and affection. He’s not always likable, but he’s uncomfortably relatable. Asuka appears to be a bratty and spunky girl with all the confidence in the world, but she suffers from a self-destructive inferiority complex caused by past tragedies that causes her to act out in front of adults to make herself appear more mature than she really is while struggling with emotional breakdowns in her private time.

Every character has a facade they put on in front of their peers, only for it to be revealed that they’re hiding a brutal amount of unhealed trauma and emotional baggage that usually causes more damage than the main threat of the story. In fact, the main story is just a part of the background. What makes Evangelion a masterpiece in my eyes is how horrifyingly human the characters are, how painful their struggles are and how disastrous their bad choices end up being.

A very bleak, depressing and terrifying series that tackles nihilistic philosophy and twisted religious allegories in abundance, but there are faint glimmers of hope and lessons to be learned from the catastrophic mistakes made by the mentally and emotionally broken cast.

I enjoyed reading this much more as an adult than I did as a teen!

Los primeros capítulos o stages de este volumen se enfocan en las relaciones, sobre todo entre Misato y Kaji, por una fiesta que se organiza por el ascenso de ella, y entre Shinji y Rei, que se toman un tecito juntos. Luego llega el episodio que le da nombre al tomo: Lápida, el momento en que Shinji vuelve a visitar, después de muchos años sin hacerlo, la tumba simbólica de su madre, y en ese lugar encuentra a su padre, con quien tiene una charla durísima. Ataca el ángel Sahaquiel, un ojo gigante que se arroja sobre NERV en forma de bomba, y que detienen entre los tres Eva de forma similar al animé. El manga se saltea y omite a dos ángeles del animé: Sandalphon, el que está en el fondo del volcán, y Matariel, la araña tira ácido que aparece durante el apagón. Durante el corte de energía se producen algunos encuentros al estilo comedia romántica, concluyendo con una escena cómica entre Misato, Kaji, Shinji y Asuka. Y algunos misterios clásicos de Evangelion se revelan en este volumen: la Lanza de Longinus, el ser que se oculta en el Central Dogma (al que llaman Adán), la muerte de Yui durante la creación de los Eva y los propósitos de SEELE.

This is where things start to fall apart - in that deliciously horrible Evangelion way. Moving the schedule up a bit compared to the TV anime, Shinji catches a glimpse of the terrifying reality behind NERV, and gets a grim pep-talk from Kaji in an aquarium, a completely new invention unique to the manga. It's all downhill into the terrifying red-lit darkness from here, folks, and I appreciate that the main character gets a series of revealing heart-to-heart conversations with several other characters.

This volume is still infected by some of the weird sitcom hijinks that followed Asuka into book 4, but overall the people and events continue to develop, and I like how the characters' personal journeys are entwined organically with the plot - unlike some of the weaker parts of the TV show, it never feels like one is being put on hold in service of the other. It's also nice that some of the more throwaway Angels get skipped; they're horror-genre enemies, and having one pop up and get dispatched again in monster-of-the-week format never really fit their whole thing.

This masterpiece has taken a special spot in my heart. After watching the anime, I thought how about read the novel. So I did it. Since it was soo good that it left an impact on me. I decided to go on and research about Evangelion. This leads me to discover the depressing things author Hideaki Anno had to go through. He mentioned in an interview that Evangelion is a way of expression Hideaki Anno was using to burn down his feelings of depression. I wouldn't say that Shinji Ikari is my favorite protagonist, but I can't help it but feel relatable to him. During this novel as well as the anime it almost feels like I am Shinji, I felt like I was betrayed. My feelings were betrayed. Shinji will always be the most unique protagonist I will ever see, because the protagonist is not the ideal version of himself, as if Evangelion is telling me that Shinji is the person you would never want to be. This is my review of Evangelion as a whole.

Azuka se traslada a vivir con Misato y cia (pingüino, que vuelve a hacer su aparición estelar); por lo que parece que se avecina algo más de comicidad en los eventos futuros narrativos. Y así es, ya que en realidad ésa una parte fundamental del tomo (hay un retorno de la esencia surrealista del segundo), junto con la profundización de relaciones, algunas enquistadas y otras futuras, de los protagonistas y secundarios.
A medio tomo, hay un despegue del nudo y una evolución significativa dentro del argumento; con verdades que salen a la luz y personajes que se manifiestan, dándose a conocer realmente.
Ahora Shimji ya sabe parte de su pasado, el patrón de su padre, lo oculto en Nerv..¡ y podrá tomar cartas en el asunto!. Un final de vértigo, sumamente interesante. Prometen mucho los siguientes.

Scopriamo il prototipo degli EVA, viene recuperata una lancia delle dimensioni di un EVA e viene utilizzata per trafiggere il prototipo. Intanto gli angeli continuano ad attaccare la terra, e ogni sfida è diversa dalle precedenti. Nell'ultimo scontro, tutti gli eva si trovano a dover sorreggere l'assalto di un enorme nemico. Sul versante umano, Myato e Ryogi continuano la loro relazione basata su avvicinamenti e respinte, ma sul finale Ryogi si rivela una spia decisa a raccontare al mondo l'assurda casualità degli attacchi degli angeli e le macchinazioni della NERV in merito. Shinji e Myato vengono messi al corrente dell'esistenza del primo angelo e di una situazione tutt'altro che chiara. Insomma: molta carne al fuoco per un numero interessante come i precdenti.

Parto con estas palabras porque este volumen, que cuenta con los mangas del 27 al 33, nos adentra en el conflicto de padre e hijo entre Gendo y Shinji. Siendo estas las primeras y únicas palabras que ha recibido el joven piloto del EVA de su padre, más el descubrimiento de unos de los secretos de NERV, se nos forma un panorama más profundo del conflicto y de los intereses detrás de la trama.

Un muy buen tomo que nos presenta lo que ya se sospecha desde hace unos tomas atrás: hay algo más, un terrible secreto está ligado a la destrucción o transformación de la humanidad.
