What do three sons—one murdered by Iraqi terrorists, one who lost his mother in a fire, and one involved with an underworld sex ring—have to do with Jan Phillips?
Two sons bring fear and death, forcing Jan to wield the awesome power of his office as the North American head of Mundus, a sub rosa organization with roots in the ancient order of the Knights Templar. The other son threatens Jan’s life and the world he shares with Michael Lin, his partner of twelve years.
As Jan struggles to survive another man’s quest for revenge, the love of fathers for their sons is the only constant among shattered lives, despoiled love, and an unknown yearning for family.
The best book so far in the Jan Phillips series. I adore Mr. Halfhill's poetic, graceful descriptions and his deeper sense of characterization. Not a traditional M/M romance, but a story about relationships - this one specifically about parents and children. The novel begins in France with a wonderful, witty tale that reads like a parable and sets up once again Jan's love/hate relationship with the Catholic church.
MILD SPOILERS:
Jan is a tortured soul in need of guidance, but his is a good and honest soul. He grieves for those whom he is unable to save, and blames himself for not being able to save them. He is a good man, he just doesn't believe that he is good.
Jan's partner, Michael, is back in this sequel. It was a pleasure to read about their relationship which now is about 12 years old. But nothing is easy for Jan - he's a man haunted by his childhood and by his relationship with the man who introduced him to the secret society he now heads. Surprises abound in this book, and I was on pins and needles for the last quarter of the book, chewing my fingernails waiting to see what would happen. Mr. Halfhill did not disappoint!
