Elzie Crisler Segar was a cartoonist, best known as the creator of Popeye, a pop culture character who first appeared in 1929 in Segar's comic strip Thimble Theatre.
I probably bought this in the early 1990s and have read it a few times but I did not record when. By this time Popeye is the star of the strip and Castor Oyl has been relegated to a minor occasional role. There are three adventures in this book. Popeye's adventure in Nazilia with King Blozo and Oscar in which he first mentions eating spinach, Popeye and Olive Oyl's adventure in the wild west when he is restored to fighting fitness by eating a can of spinach and finally an adventure when Popeye, Olive, King Blozo, Oscar and Merlock Jones set sail in search of gold. The final story introduces Bluto as the villain and again Popeye eats a can of spinach to fortify himself. This is great and very funny to.
Bluto finally appears! Then leaves fairly quickly. It's so interesting that he became integral post-Segar because I've read all but volume nine and ten (of 11), and only seen him for the one long scene at sea within. I just flipped through nine without seeing either...
