Let me say that I'm not a Civil war expert, so I'm unable to judge if what has been described here is accurate or not, but I must say that I loved even the descriptions of battles and skirmishes, of planning and war strategy!

So, this is not only a romance, but also an interesting insight to what happens when to people from opposite sides fall in love.

Emaline, a pampered southern belle, widdowed and left alone to work her plantation and Reece, a northern colonel who comes to said plantation to requisition everything on it, food, cattle, the very house, for the war effort.

Their first meeting is obviously as enimies: who's that man and who gave him the right to take eveything from her?!?!

And who is this hellion with a rifle who wants to stop me?!?!

But since the beginning there's something that attracts them to each other... and so it begins... They fight each other, but they lust after each other... until....

Her plantaion has become a war camp, her house a hospital...

And she begins to change... how can she ignore the suffering soldiers, even if they're the enemy? They have family, they have wives and children waiting for them like she waits for her brother... And she starts helping.

And her brother returns wounded, Reece falls in love with her, everything goes topsy-turvy! And the pacing of the story goes from fast to lighting fast!

There're so many things happening in so few pages that I felt light-headed: the wounded brother, the deserters, the risky rescue, the near rape, the wounded Reece... I would have liked a few more pages and a slower pace, but still I loved the whole feeling of the book!

Reece and Emmy are often separated because of the war and many month pass between their reunion. Both are feeling hopeless, but they're helpless too because what they're feeling for each other is overwhelming and, at the same time, impossible.

In a world gone mad, in the middle of a war they strive to find a way to be together. It's heartbraking...

They both change during all that time. Both find out that they can love and heal. Reece finds out that there're other reasons for living besides obeying orders. Emmy find out that the northerners are not so very different from sutherners: they're men with all the good and bad in them.

A wonderful, sweeping romantic story... very similar to Gone With The Wind, but shorter and not as majestic. Still wonderful and well worth reading!

This is an epic story that covers many years through the American Civil War until peace returns.

Emaline McDaniels is a widow who is attempting to keep her dead husband's plantation running with only a few slaves who did not leave. She has frequent panic attacks, but she is also strong. She is loyal but also open-minded and kind. I appreciated her spunk and her willingness to care for others.

Colonel Reece Cutteridge is a widower who is trying to run from his past and forget his pain by immersing himself in war. He is a good leader and a just man.

The romance builds slowly and competing loyalty come up over and over with the war and family and friends. Right and wrong are not clear. I appreciated the beautiful writing and the way many issues were tackled.

The only thing that prevents me from rating it 5 starts is not being fully emotionally invested. This should have brought tears more than once but it did not. I think this is a story that could affect individual readers quite differently as I've seen varying reviews.

I've just re-read Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell and, racist as both the book and the author obviously are/were, you can't deny that's it's well researched and it draws you in and keeps you reading.

Now, I'm not going to compare No Greater Glory to Gone With the Wind, it'd be an unfair comparison, what with this being a romance book with no great aspirations besides entertaining the reader.

But having read Gone With The Wind I became aware of all the rules of society going on at the time.
And the characters from No Greater Glory behave in a way that wouldn't be acceptable even during my grandmother's time, let alone during the civil war.
For instance, Reece, the enemy, invades Emaline's house, takes her food and supplies, then asks if he may call her by her first name. She, a southern widow from a great plantation, just says yes and starts calling him - a Yankee - by his first name as well.

Not to mention that their relationship was instant lust, not exactly what one would expect from a woman whose home is being invaded by enemies...

All of that I could excuse but the book was endlessly boring.
It rarely takes me more than one day to read a book - it took me 3 days to read this one!

It literally only picked up by the 82% mark. I honestly don't know how I made it that far...

It's not badly written or anything, it's just boring.

So, I don't know, maybe it just didn't work for me, but it'll work for other readers?
Give it a try, I guess.

In Cindy Nord’s No Greater Glory, another Southern plantation, Shapinsay, joins the famous Civil War plantations of Tara, and Twelve Oaks. Inhabiting this plantation is Emaline McDaniels who is joined by a Yankee colonel, Reece Cutteridge. This is a beautifully written book by Cindy Nord. It is fraught with desire and doubt! The research done by the author of the era is minutely perfect - right down to the clothing worn by the characters. The love story is fantastic!
Emaline meets the hated and feared Yankees when Col. Reece Cutteridge commandeers her magnificent plantation for his troops winter bivouac. They take over the whole plantation, including the bottom floor of the house to be used as a hospital. Knowing she cannot do anything about it, the beautiful mistress of the plantation bides her time. Soon, though, her hatred of the Yankee colonel is overshadowed by something else. What is it? Respect? Understanding? Acceptance? Another emotion more akin to love? Read Ms. Nord’s novel of the War Between the States, the Civil War or whatever nomenclature you prefer. You won’t be disappointed, I assure you.

“Colonel Reece Cutteridge spotted the woman the instant he turned onto the lane. He informed his comrades he’d handle the situation. But just how, he didn’t quite know yet. The blazing animosity reflected in her evergreen eyes indicated she wasn’t open to hospitality. The rifle in her hands underscored that fact. Of the many plantations he’d commandeered since the beginning of the war, most were deserted or housed civilians cowering within.”

Ms. Nord has a command of the language of the day, just as Colonel Cutteridge had command of his troops. She knows the history of the period. She writes an engrossing story of love between enemies, as opposed to fighting brother against brother.
Born in Arizona to a family of educators, Cindy Nord moved from the southwestern desert to southwestern Indiana during her teenage years. After the birth of her two sons, she became a stay-at-home mom. At this point, she decided to try writing an historical romance with her own special twist. The result, No Greater Glory.
I recommend this debut novel to those who love romance and historical fiction. It has both in abundance.
Ms Nord is a veteran of Civil War reenacting that started when she met her husband, Tom. She donned a corset and began a hobby that her whole family could enjoy together. From what I know about Civil War Reenactments, the research is thorough and the actual reenactment is true to the era. This, I believe, is what helps to make No Greater Glory so well written.
A member of numerous writers groups, Cindy’s work has finaled or won countless times in chapter competitions, including the prestigious Romance Writers of America National Golden Heart Contest.

Civil War Romance Rich in Historic Detail

A well-researched debut novel with considerable detail of the various battles around Virginia, this is a romance for those who like to become very involved in the Civil War.

Set from 1862 to 1865, it tells the story of Emaline McDaniels, a widow trying to hold onto her Virginia plantation, Shapinsay. Then Colonel Reece Cutteridge, a Union officer, shows up to requisition her home and her livestock to winter and feed his troops. Despite her disdain for the Union, Emaline finds herself assisting the Union doctor and nursing the colonel’s men, all the while fighting an attraction to their commander. Reece, who lost his wife and child, resists Emaline, too, but quickly finds himself falling in love with her. Separated by war, they will find themselves brought together by fate.

Nord describes what it was like to hold a plantation on the edge of war with intruding soldiers, deserters and miscreants all trying to steal what is not theirs. And in the midst of all that, a love between two people on opposite sides. Reece is a strong, capable leader of men. Emaline is a sympathetic Southern woman. Though some parts of the book seemed more like historical fiction than romance, the love story taking a back seat to the war, history fans will love it!

I was expecting so much more from this one... The love story felt rushed, it had enough potential to be epic but it was extremely fast-paced and sudden. They fell in love (more like fell into extreme lust) out of nowhere. The war wasn't really described at all, important battles were slightly mentioned and years went by too fast! It wasn't bad but maybe I was expecting a lot more development? It was just OKAY.

This one is for history lovers! Details the the Civil War reminiscent of Gone With the Wind and Ashes In the Wind abound in this book. A Northern officer and a young Southern widow are brought together several times during the course of the war and fall in love. Many dangers associated with the war plague each of the them and ingenuous solutions help them overcome the trials.

I was recently given a copy of No Greater Glory to evaluate for a contest. It was initially a little disappointing to find that I had been given a Civil War historical to read. I am more of a Regency/Victorian England type of girl. BUT...was I ever wrong. This book was beautifully written. It gave an accurate portrayal of the time. The story was compelling and the characters were believable. Most importantly, I have continued to “live” the story in my mind hours after finishing it. That's impressive.

It is not hard to have dramatic conflict in a Civil War story. Drama is inherent in the regional conflict between fellow Americans. Thirty-five year old widow Emaline McDaniels is distraught when Yankee soldiers commandeer her land, house, and livestock. She has been struggling to hold her house and property together with only a few loyal servants. Emaline is surprised and dismayed to find that she is attracted to Colonel Reece Cutteridge, the leader of the Yankee battalion. Reece has a tragic past, having lost his wife in an Indian raid. He is attracted to Emaline, too, but feels he is too damaged to offer her anything. Besides, they are in the middle of a war and on opposite sides.

The events that Emaline and Reece encounter are realistic for their situations. Yes, there is a little bit of coincidence involved, but it wouldn't be a great story without it. Reece finds little ways to look out for Emaline, even when he is off fighting battles. Emaline holds everything together at her home while finding ways to help injured Yankee soldiers. They both come to believe the war is nothing but senseless death and destruction. I liked that they didn't fall into bed immediately – Reece was a truly honorable man – but the steamy scenes were quite satisfying.

This was an extremely well written book. The use of descriptive language painted pictures that were easy to visualize. The best part for me was that the characters were so believable. Author Nord made me understand who they were. Their behavior was completely consistent with backgrounds and personalities. Their love for each other was deep and genuine. I cared about them. One important measure of the quality of a romance is the degree to which we are emotionally invested. I was totally invested in this story from beginning to end. It doesn't get much better.

No Greater Glory by Cindy Nord is a historical romance set in the deep south during the Civil War. Normally, I love a historical romance, but this one was just okay for me. If you are looking for so much more than just a romance this will probably be perfect for you. I, however, feel that the actual interactions between the hero and heroine were few and far between. It seemed that every encounter between the two of them was rushed and filled with anger. Yet, all of a sudden they were madly in love.

Emaline McDaniels is a widowed plantation owner just trying to get by until the war is over and life can go back to a more peaceful time. It doesn't help that all of a sudden the war is brought straight to her back door. Hating everything about the war and having to share her land and food with the yankee army has pushed her over the edge. She blames the Colonel for taking over everything that is hers, including her heart.

Reece Cutteridge is a Colonel for the yankee army. He is very good at leading his men and following orders from his superiors. He doesn't question when he's told to requisition Shapinsay and it's livestock for his army. It's his job and a job he means to do well until the war is over. He isn't prepared for the widowed plantation owner holding him at gunpoint the day he rides in or the way she makes him feel as he watches her tending his wounded and dieing despite her hatred of the war invading her backyard. He knows he needs to stay focused and stay away from the beautiful widow, but he has a feeling it's not that easy.

I was only half way through this book and I had to order the second book in the series. It was that good!

I read a lot of historical romances. Some authors merely use it as a backdrop and/or the setting with no actual research into the time period. I cannot say that about this fantastic book. Cindy Nord has not only done her research on the turbulent time period in America's Civil War, she literally brings it to life. And yet the detail and descriptions do not bog down the book, but enhance the beautiful love story she carefully created here.

The characters are rich, complex and well developed. This is no easy path to HEA. Our hero and heroine are not only from two completely different backgrounds and ways of life, they are literally on two different sides of a nation at war. Their emotions and feelings are well grounded in the hardships they both have experienced since the beginning of the war. Slowly but surely they begin to share themselves and their experiences and discover a love and a passion neither thought to ever experience. It was a joy to watch.

This is my first book by Cindy Nord. I just loved her writing. I was sucked in from the very beginning and the entire ride was thoroughly enjoyable. Onto "With Open Arms" the second book in the Cutteridge Family Series!

With the historical scope and richness of Gone With the Wind and the passion of Rogers and Woodiwiss, Cindy Nord sculpts the Civil War saga, No Greater Glory, with a deft hand.

Her historical details are rich and her obvious passion for the time period is evident. She pulls you into the hell of Civil War battles. You can smell the death and regret.

At the same time she shows us how two people; one confederate, one union manage to find each other and find love amid turmoil.

I loved this story and I look forward to her other books.

I really enjoyed this novel by Cindy Nord - I believe her debut novel, but my first by her at any rate. It's rich in historical detail about the American Civil War and although I can't comment re authenticity it did seem to me as though an inordinate amount of research had gone into it. I thoroughly enjoyed this aspect in particular and finished this story very much the wiser. Cindy Nord certainly has an ability to immerses her readers in the atmosphere surrounding a bloody battle. And she is also particularly good at the development of her male characters of which there are many.

The love story was very romantic but a little rushed in its development, one minute absolute hatred the next smouldering attraction. Dare I say that it is almost bordering on the purple side? Only just, but there were just too many flowery descriptions for my taste. And I did find Emaline's character to be overly dramatic which took me out of the story a little - but not enough to abandon it.

The narration was excellent - in parts - and her accents (as far as I can tell) were excellent and authentic. At other times her telling of the story (narrative) didn't flow and she came over as rather stilted and wooden. I also felt that her portrayal of Emaline was over-played giving this already overly dramatic character a rather childish, whinny voice at times. Reece, however was superb - he was a lovely character all round and the narrator gave him a rich baritone voice which was very easy on the ear. Having said all of that, I still really enjoyed the overall story, especially the fantastic historical content and shall certainly read the next in the series.

This novel is extraordinary in its portrayal of a war torn country during the Civil War. I found myself tearing-up over the horrible conditions the men and beast endured during this horrible time. Cindy Nord has done her research. Since she and her husband are involved in Civil War reenactments everything is thoroughly descriptive. In her story “No Greater Glory” set amidst this terrible event in our country, an unlikely romance evolves between a Yankee Colonel and a spirited female plantation owner struggling to keep her southern plantation thriving after the death of her husband. Her Negro Slaves, free to leave if they chose, will not leave Shapinsay; rather plant themselves firmly to help the woman they love prevail. When the Union army rides up on their horses to take over Shapinsay as their fortress and hospital, this daring woman points a rifle at the chest of Colonel Reece Cutteridge and demands he remove his troops immediately. When Reece only smiles and says they need her property, she pulls the trigger to his chest. The gun misfires and from that point on, the colonel finds himself smitten. From hate and revenge, to acceptance and human need to care for the sick and dying at the side of an enduring Yankee doctor, Emaline thrives and flounders in a man’s world and through improbable moments of exquisite romantic episodes finds her heart belongs only to Colonel Reece Cutteridge. I was completely engrossed in this story. Nord’s command of well-rounded characters and events held me spellbound to the very end. Margaret Mitchell would applaud this book. It rivals her “Gone with the Wind” in a superb way. I did not want the story to end and cannot wait for this author’s next book. READ THIS ONE!

When Yankee soldiers take over widowed Southern Belle, Emaline McDaniel's plantation, home, Shapinsay in Falmouth, Virginia, she has no idea what she is in for when she comes face to face with Colonel Reece Cutteridge of the 6th Cavalry. Holding a rifle squarely at the Colonel, Emaline stands firm in her attempt to protect all that she has left. But the Colonel has a job to do and this stubborn female won't get in the way of getting his orders done, or will she?

Both the Colonel and the Southern Belle had lives before the war. Lydia had her marriage, not a happy one, but it was something. Once she meets Colonel Reece Cutteridge, all bets are off. The passion that stirs between the soldier and the lady is something than cannot be denied, and even when duty calls, love and passion can prevail.

First, I must say that I am a history nerd. The Civil War holds great interest to me. Having said that, this book is not just about the Civil War, it's about two people from two different worlds, coping with the times and what life has thrown at them. Colonel Cutteridge is a true gentleman, and from history we know that is not always the case where women were concerned in situations with war. I love Reece, a character with such depth and such conviction. Emaline is a character who changes for for better. Leading a life of privilege at first then being tossed in the middle of the war has brought out the true woman she was meant to be.

No Greater Glory is Cindy Nord's first published book, and I enjoyed it immensely. I would love to see Reece and Emaline in the future. Ms. Nord really makes you care for them and the outcome. I hope to see more from this author soon!

No Greater Glory is a wonderful historical romance set in the American South during the Civil War. There are some typical elements usually found in this kind of story.

You have the Southern belle who wants to hold onto the family plantation and the Yankee officer who threatens to destroy all she holds dear.

What sets this story apart is Cindy Nord’s grasp on this time period and the people who lived during this era.

The history woven into the story is accurate and brings to life the plight of Emaline, who like so many in the South, had to come to terms with great losses. Nord also brings to life a soldier and the hardships they had to endure. I loved Reece, who is an officer and a gentleman. Yet, by no means, a stereotype.

I highly recommend this beautiful love story if you are looking for a true historical romance. Or, if you just bored with the Regency era, you’ll love the change of pace.

HR set during the American Civil War, with 34 year old widowed Southern plantation owner who was forced to submit her beloved home to the occupation of Yankee troops under the command the authoritarian Colonel Cutteridge. It's a nice change to have a more mature heroine, but pity she couldn't act her age and have more dignity and self-respect. She succumbed to the giggles every few pages, which got my ire after a few inappropriate moments. The two protagonists somehow fell passionately in love after exchanging a dozen words during a handful of meetings, and in less time it takes to say "fickle", she went from ardently defending her plantation and "her people" to abandoning the same in order to chase the good colonel across the battlefield.

This is the first book If I could give this book 10* i definitely would! I have read by Cindy Nord. Let me say this definitely will not be the last. Once I started this book I simply couldn't put it down. The hero in this book is every woman's dream. The author has a way of describing the events that you feel like you're actually there during the war. The romance and emotion between the hero and heroine is so hot you have to keep turning each page to see what happens next. There is so many obstacles with the war that keep these two apart that I was routing for them the whole way through the book. I laughed, I cried, and went through so many emotions while reading this book. So if you like a emotional civil war romance read this definitely is the book for you!

This should actually be 3 and 1/2 stars. The hero was a bit more dominating than I prefer, but he's a Calvary officer in the army during a war so it made sense. The heroine, too, was kind of all over the place emotionally (which tends to drive me a little crazy), but again, she's in the middle of a war so it made sense. The historical detail is fabulous, and very descriptive. I don't normally get involved with the Civil War period, so I had to look some things up, but I like that in a book--a very cool way to learn! Overall, definitely worth the price and, more importantly, totally worth the time I invested :-)

This wonderful Civil War romance will have you turning the pages deep into the night. Widowed plantation owner Emaline McDaniels must contend with the sudden appearance of a bevy of Union soldiers determined to use her property as a stop as they move south. Colonel Reece Cutteridge--commanding and resolute--finds himself falling under Emaline's spell despite every effort otherwise. Against the backdrop of heartbreaking atrocities, they come together in a blaze of passion and need. Ms. Nord handles the details of the time period with ease, but it's the tension and love between Emaline and Reece that will leave the most lasting impression. I really enjoyed 'No Greater Glory'!

This is a beautifully written Civil War love story with complex and very appealing characters. The story is emotionally honest and exciting, and the dialog is natural and feels appropriate for the era. NO GREATER GLORY grabs you at the outset and never lets go. Ms. Nord doesn't shirk from dealing with the terrible cost of war, but her uplifting story focuses on the power of love to bring out the courage and compassion in people, even when they are enemies. I highly recommend NO GREATER GLORY.

THIS is an epic Civil War historical romance on par with GWTW or North & South. An incredible story, as well as excellent historical detailing and insight into the eastern theatre of the war in Virginia. For nearly a full year, this book was the #1 Civil War Romance at Amazon.
