Private detective Duncan Andrews has the home-team advantage when it comes to solving paranormal crimes: His best friend, Gina, is a centuries-old witch. His dog is a zombie. And his boyfriend, Robbie, is a ghost.

Duncan certainly has his work cut out for him with this case. Someone’s been using the skull of a powerful wizard to control animals, and whoever it is, they’re not out to set up a petting zoo. For Gina, the case hits close to home—she knows just how dangerous it is, since the wizard was her father.

Just when he thinks they’re close to breaking the case, tragedy strikes, leaving Gina in a coma. Then, after years as a ghost, Robbie finally decides to move on, leaving Duncan to protect young Ashton Marsh, the victim of several strange animal attacks. Suddenly Duncan is working without his supernatural safety net. Without his friends, can Duncan defeat the power of Eleazar’s skull and keep Ashton alive? Or will the struggle for his life end in broken bodies as well as broken hearts?

The second book in the Duncan and Robbie saga just gets better.

This story had everything the first book had and more. We get to catch up with Daisy and learn a little more about Gina, but mostly we get to go on another case with Duncan and his ghostly sidekick. This time the case holds more mystery and intrigue, but Duncan and Robbie again kept me laughing, apart from the times they had me choking up. I admit to being worried in places, expecting the expected, but I worried needlessly. This book keeps you guessing, then just when you think you have it all figured out, it spins it a little more.

I really don’t know how I want these books to play out. I just know I want more please.

ETA

Second time reading loses nothing of the excitement or humor, it also lost none of the bitersweetness. That ending choked me up as much as the first time reading. Can't wait to see where the next book takes me.

ETA That ending still gets to me.

ETA What can I say except I wish Daisy had a change of appetite lol

Meet Duncan Andrews - Private Eye. Not your usual P.I. though, he doesn't handle missing person cases, cheating spouses cases, or missing jewelry cases. Nope, Duncan Andrews deals with supernatural cases. You get your daughter being tired and called her dead boyfriend (careful, he might be a vampire!), you call Duncan Andrews. Along with his has-been-dead-for-10-years ghost boyfriend, a witch best friend, and a zombie dog, Duncan will sure help you (you don't need to know about the ghost, witch, or zombie dog, though).

Gina's (Duncan's best friend) father's skull is missing. Because he is a very powerful warlock, his magic is dangerous to those who doesn't know how to use it. Soon, Gina is put on state-like coma, and Duncan must find the skull before the person is killing more people. Luckily, the latest case that falls into his lap gives him the clues needed on where to find it. If only his ghost boyfriend can concentrate on helping him, and not thinking about moving on ...

------------

I like this book slightly better than the first. I'll get to that main reason later. Pace wise, the story moves quick. I have read two other novels by Stephen Osborne and he has a humorous tone that makes reading his books so much fun. Duncan is still witty, with funny one-liners that entertain me throughout.

Vampires aren’t sparkly. They smell like gym socks that have been left in a locker for months. And if they weren’t beautiful before they turned into one of the legion of the undead, they aren’t going to have some magical transformation and suddenly look like Robert Pattinson. If they had bad hair and freckles when they were living, they have bad hair and freckles as vamps.

It doesn't take long for the mystery to be solved -- I think it's around 2/3 part of the book, Duncan discovers who is responsible. The rest is about how he deals with it. This book has humor, wit, and well HORROR. Trust me, there is one scene that involves death by squirrels, and after that, I will not look at squirrels the same again *shudders*

... Now let's get to the part in which I think the book is better. I know that this is not a strong romance, but more on the urban fantasy with romantic tone , but one of my main worries in the first book relates to Duncan's relationship with Robbie and a potential (live) boyfriend named, Nick. In that one, it is suggested somehow, that they should involved in some kind of love triangle, in which Robbie can possess Nick's body so that Duncan and him can have (sort of) sex. I say, ICKY!!

Fortunately, in this book, it doesn't happen! In fact, Duncan realizes that he only loves Robbie (after the event in book #1) and if he must be a celibate for years and years to come, then so be it. So he has broken off things with Nick. Nick is still around a couple of times, and he seems to still waiting for Duncan a bit. And Robbie still suggests the 'possessing' thing once in awhile. But I'm sure that Duncan is determined enough that it won't happen. So that's quite a relief.

ALTHOUGH, the fact that both Duncan and Robbie are yet moving on, are playing a big part on this too. Robbie keep thinking if it's time, that he should have let Duncan go. More than one people also put the thought on Duncan that he might keep Robbie from something better on the other side. It adds the angst nuance in it, which I enjoy.

PS: The Duncan and Robbie relationship sort of reminds me of another human/ghost couple I love. Check Drew Zachary's "Eye Spy" series, if you want something similar. In there D.B. is also a private detective, and his lover/partner, Jesse, is a ghost!

What a great series this is turning out to be! I love Duncan, hunting ghosts and helping people with their paranormal problems, but my heart absolutely breaks for Duncan and Robbie, Duncan's ghost boyfriend. Should he move on, should he stay here with Duncan, as he has for the past ten years? It's quite the problem, and I'm anxious to see what happens next.

In the sequel to Pale as a Ghost, we are back with Private Detective Duncan Andrews and his cast of unusual companions, from his zombie dog, his ghost boyfriend, and his witch best friend. Duncan isn’t just your usual detective, though, because he’s always out solving the random Twilight wannabe vampire running amuck or in this instance, a stolen skull from a powerful wizard being used to harm and even kill others. This case strikes personal for Duncan and his best friend Gina, as it is her father Eleazar’s stolen skull.

Soon Gina is put into a coma, and he has another case that brings him clues as to who stole the skull. Weird trick of the skull? Its power uses animals to harm.

Amidst that you have Duncan and Robbie questioning their reality of a relationship and whether either can make it on their own. And Nick is still tagging along.

I loved this book just as much as the last one, but it was different in its own way. The reader still has Duncan’s priceless one-liners, his awkwardness, his love for his boyfriend, and everything else that makes this wonderful man up. Robbie….SIGH…my fictional hubby, Robbie. Damn, I love that man. That dead man still wearing his high school letterman jacket that wants to have sex with his very alive boyfriend. Trust me it’s not as creepy as it sounds. And gahhhhh, he is so freakin cute and hilarious. When Duncan was getting hit on??? Robbie’s reactions were classic. Even in the dream sequence where he’s wandering around observing and asking questions. He’s just so caring, sexy, pouty, and wise in his own way. These two FIT. I can’t see them apart ever…ever, ever, ever. Mr. Osborne, do NOT break my heart. That scene in the car where Duncan and Robbie are discussing whether Robbie should move on to the afterlife? How awesome and neat (not really). You knew I wanted to sob like a 5 year old.

Then there is Nick, who I’m coming around to (again not really). Don’t get me wrong, he’s fine and nice and dependable, but he’s not Robbie. He is a good friend, though. And Duncan needs a great friend that has no association with the paranormal world. Gina, when she was there in this book, is just as lovable as always. And Daisy, that sweet murderess dog. Yeah, me likey her.

I thought the case in this book was more interesting than the ones in the last book, and I also thought the instances where the skull worked its magic were creepy. That makes me happy. M/m books need more great suspense or mystery novels. I’ll never look at squirrels the same way. Or that damn grinning cat.

Oh and Eleazar?? You, my kind floating head sir, are so, so, SO badass for the gift you gave the reader and, most importantly, Duncan at the end.

Highly recommend for fictional hubby love and a good mystery and suspense.

Animal Instinct

I'm trying to be less nit picky and more helpful in my reviews. But that means I actually have to write them rather than posting my notes. Fortunately, I barely thought of notes as I read this. It was that good.

None of the issues I had with the previous book came up. It was a joy to read. There were interesting characters, a good plot, interesting magic experiences, action, drama, romance and live, and some great humor. There was even a happy little surprise at the end.

I look forward to reading the next in the series.

Its been a while since I read book 1 but it all cane back.
Duncan is off looking for a person whi has stolen the skull of a powerful warlock and is turning animals into killing machines.
The old gang are there even if Gina is indisposed for much of the book.
I really enjoyed this. Some humorous moments and some sad ones with Robbie trying to decide if he wants to stay earthbound.
I have a couple of books to read for other challenges but will be back soon to binge read the remaining books in this series.

Interesting. I didn't know how this would play out. My attention kept being pulled away from the story and I never felt I HAD to keep reading. It was enjoyable and fun and I did have to know how it ended, there felt like an element was missing. Still, Robbie, Daisey, Duncan, Seth, David, Ash, even the drugged out mother kept me entertained. Death by squirrel, has to be a first. 😊

Now the ending, cool! Robbie and Duncan are given a short term gift that was sweet. It makes me wonder what I'm earth is in store for this couple. Ghost boyfriends can only do so much. I do look forward to the next. I have to know what the HEA looks like.

I think I enjoyed this story even more than the first in the series. It brought back all the characters I loved from the previous book and introduced some more unique individuals. The relationship between Duncan and Robbie becomes even more bittersweet as it swings between funny and sad throughout the course of the book. The mystery part of the story was very engaging and the whole story had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion. I am looking forward to more books in this series.

This series rocks! It's funny, creative, dangerous, sweet, and heartbreaking. This is definitely not a standalone book. I love Duncan, his ghost boyfriend, Robbie, Daisy, the zombie bulldog, and Gina, the witch. In this second book we also see more of Nick, Duncan's almost hook-up from he first book.

The dialogue in here is crisp and witty. I love the pop culture references the author throws in; and I love that I get them! There are horrifically funny leather attack by animals. Yes, someone died and I laughed. Am I sick or is the author just that funny? I, thinking a little of both.

And guess what? You know how Duncan has been celibate and horny as hell for 10 years since Robbie died? Well, he finally gets some--but I'm not gonna say from whom!

As soon as I finish this review, I am picking up the third book in this series. I can't believe it took a challenge for me to find this author--yay!

Just love these stories by Stephen Osborne. The humour in them has me often laughing out loud. I love Daisy the squirrel muncher.
In this episode, Duncan is lucky to be alive at the end. Someone is able to enthrall animals to do their bidding. The mystery isn't really a mystery - whodunnit is easy - it's getting the skull back and stopping the evil that's difficult.
Thoroughly enjoying this series.

Review:
The craziness continues. I love this paranormal series. The characters are interesting, funny and deadly serious. The plot of the second book involves the missing skull of a dead warlock, Eleazar. Eleazar is very powerful, even though he no longer exists on earth, he can still make his presence known. He is also the father of Duncan’s best friend Gina the witch. When animals start attacking people, Duncan finds himself on the case to find Gina’s father’s skull, stop the vicious killings by animal attacks, protect a boy from his cat, and keep his one true love Robbie from crossing over. Yes there is a lot going on, and I loved every page of it. There is still this amazing chemistry between Robbie and Duncan, but Robbie feels that he is holding Duncan back from starting a new relationship with someone that is alive. This story is exciting with all the mystery and suspense. There is a powerful ending with a special thank you from Eleazar. These characters blend so well together and the more I get to know them, the more I like them.

Originally read: 7-10-12 thru 7-12-12
"You're always a little sad leaving the Magic Kingdom, but you're just glad you had the experience."

I'm so digging this series, and that quote from the book actually sums it up nicely. I want it to go on but when it ends I'm both satisfied, but can't wait for the next one. Unfortunately, I just read the book that came out like two months ago so.... I wish like the Harry Dresdan Series I hadn't discovered this series until there were a ton of books to just devour at once.

Once again in this book we have Duncan, our quippy hero and his gang which includes Robbie, his ghost boyfriend, Gina, his witch best friend, his zombie dog, Daisy and Nick who I'm not sure how to describe so let's just call him a friend. Oh then there is LT. Carson the local officer that knows that Duncan is involved with all things supernatural, but wished he didn't. This time Duncan is called in by a friend of one the kids from the case he worked in the last book. Weird things are happening to young Ashton Marsh, which as it turns out is connected to his friend Gina, and a case Lt. Carson is working on. When Gina ends up in a coma he and Robbie see if they can find help elsewhere. They end up talking to Rick Vallis a tv psychic who believes that Robbie and Duncan are holding each other back.

This is another winner. I laughed and cried a little and ended satisfied and wanting more. What else is there?

I just wish the author had a website that I could obsessively check for updates and frequently asked questions but hey can't win them all... I'll likely check out other books by this author as well...

Re-read: 11-15-14 So good. Of course I was sort of fueled by the fact that I had a vague memory of how this ended and I wanted to get to it. But it's amazing how much you forget. I'm so excited to start this next book- one that I haven't read yet! YAY!

How can you not like a quirky book where the main characters are a PI who deals in paranormal crimes, his ghost boyfriend and their zombie bulldog. It has so many things to keep your attention, beginning with the fast pace and Duncan's snappy one-liners. Those had me chuckling...the author has a humorous way of writing that really moves the plot along and makes the book fun and entertaining.

Duncan is dealing with a couple of problems in this book. The first is the mystery--the case he's trying to solve. This brings Detective Carson back in from time to time and gets Gina involved at the beginning. It's here Mr. Osborne weaves in all kinds of interesting information, not only about the stolen skull, but about Gina's personal history. Unfortunately she ends up in a coma, which is a big twist. It leaves Duncan to deal with the paranormal problems alone. Not good. Then there's the issue with Robbie thinking he's holding Duncan back from having a relationship--with a 'real' man--namely Nick. It's during these moments that Mr. Osborne expresses the pain, fear, frustration and uncertainty both Duncan and Robbie are feeling. And who wouldn't be frustrated. They haven't had sex in a decade. Good job Mr. Osborne.

So, if you didn't get it before, let me be clear. I enjoyed this sequel, maybe even more than the original--Pale as a Ghost. The writing is tighter, the characters more deeply developed, the pacing smooth and the suspense with the young villain nicely integrated into the plot. The unrequited sexual tension of these two lovers is handled well and in the end you're going to get a big surprise courtesy of a powerful ghost. Watch for it.

This book was such a good addition to this series!
I love how snarky Duncan is in this book. So in this book you get more of the characters from the first book plus meet new characters too. There are animals attacking people in this book plus a very jealous dead wife who likes to cause trouble and tries to Possess people.
I have to say I love the humor the author puts in this story and how he mixes the action, plus the serious parts in perfectly so once I start reading it just grabs me so much that then I am staying up almost all night reading this book not wanting to put it down.
So you get Duncan who is a supernatural private investigator which I love his character. Then there was Robbie his ghost boyfriend who has been dead for 10 years and has been sticking around Duncan since he died. They are still very much in love and neither one is willing to let the other go. This part was so sweet to me and also so sad that Robbie died so young. Robbie does go through a lot of soul searching in this book trying to decide if it was better for him to let Duncan go and move on or not. Then you get Daisy the zombie dog and Gina the witch who is Duncan's best friend. So I do not want to give away anymore of this book because you really need to read this series for yourself it is just so good!

So all together I really loved this book!
I would definitely recommend this book!

I've been meaning to read this book off and on for the last year. I enjoyed the first one and was curious how the whole ghost-boyfriend thing was going to work out. Plus the author seems to be able to mix humor and mytery in a way i find very entertaining. Sequels can be a bit of a gamble though, so i have kinda put it off, hoping to get around to it (or be forced to read it) at some point.

So the verdict? Pretty good. It does a great job of continuing the story between Duncan and his merry band of weird and spooky (and yes, Nick totally gets that label too. Anyone who offers to let a dead guy posses him so Nick's sorta-ex and his non-corporeal lover can get it on, is well worthy of the title Wierd). But it also presented a new and interesting mystery for me to solve.

I will say the mystery was pretty easy to figure out, but watching Duncan try to figure out how exactly to deal with a being of unimaginable cosmic power (and itty-bitty living space) was fun. And a bit painful all 'round. I know I will never quite trust my cats agian--the evil little buggers.

Overall, very entertaining and i will definitely be moving on with the series.

I think I like this series even more after this book. I enjoyed the first, but this one solidifies it as a must read for me.

There is humor, and a little romance. I like Duncan's sense of humor, and the paranormal aspect. I LOVE Daisy. The ending was very nice...it's about time Duncan got something nice.

Still loved this the second time around.
This series has a great cast. Who can resist Daisy, the zombie bulldog? I just want to love on her.
There is a lot of humor in all the books.
Love the mystery...even knowing who the culprit is (since I have already read this once) I still enjoyed the process.
I disliked the psychic more this time around. I wanted to keep him away from Robby.
Really though, he wasn't portrayed as being anything other than someone who sees and tries to help the dead cross over....but somehow in my mind, he can't be trusted, and is trying to force Robby to cross over, without listening to Robby or Duncan wishes. But that's all in my head as the reader. I don't think he is actually written to be a villain.

I love all of the cast...but special love to Daisy.

4.5 stars.

A worthy sequel and continuation of a promising series. The plotting was tighter and the premise more interesting than the first book.

The man/ghost romance which was so poignantly intriguing in Pale as a Ghost enjoys the spotlight in this one. The boys can no longer avoid the question of whether they are holding each other back by continuing to cling to a relationship, and their struggles to deal with it form the focus and heart of the story. Supporting cast members Nick and Gina are more deeply characterized, the suspense/action sequences keep the pacing brisk, and the angst is lightened by humor and bantering dialogue. The smut factor is happily notched up from the first book. Bonus for another gorgeous cover by Anne Cain.

Highly recommended.

Really interesting case, great characters, sweet romance between Duncan and his ghost boyfriend Robbie. It was nice to see Nick, Lt. Carson, and young Ash becoming permanent members of this circle of friendship. Some tearful moments with conflicted Robbie....shall I go or shall I stay....so needed a couple of Kleenex. I'd like to see more world building in the series, but overall it's well written and edited, and very entertaining. On to #3, The Scarlet Tide. Recommended to fans of mystery/paranormal stories!

I'm making it short and this counts for all three books of this series: Read them. They have a plot, great and funny characters and funny and good dialogues. They are unique and the writing is good. I've devoured all three in a few days. There isn't much not to like. I'm hoping there will be more Duncan Andrews thriller in our future.

Duncan and friends are back. This time around they are solving a case of someone who has managed to get hold of a wizard's skull and is gaining control of the animal population. While Duncan is not on his own, because he has Robbie, he misses Gina, who is in a coma.

The mystery wasn't too mysterious, as it was pretty obvious who the perpetrator was from the start. And Duncan knew who it was fairly early on, too. What did work for me in this book was the relationship between Duncan and Robbie, and the issues that they had, and how they dealt with them. I also liked the psychic who could see ghosts, and how Duncan didn't believe him at first, because psychics are all charlatans.

*I received a free ecopy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.*

This book had all the same good things the first one had—likeable characters, a solid plot, unique relationship struggles, writing that flowed well, snarky humor—but I actually liked it even more than the first.

For one thing, I found this one to be funnier because, in addition to Duncan’s snarky/sarcastic thoughts and remarks, there was that specific type of humor in which ridiculous things just keep building up until you can’t help but laugh. In this case, it was often thanks to the ghost of Duncan’s client’s neighbor who was recently killed and decided to haunt them and would always show up with perfect timing (he was rather harmless though, so don’t get confused and think this story is about a haunting).

I also thought the plot was more intriguing this time since it had a more legitimate mystery with a whodunnit aspect.

Another thing I liked was that Duncan was no longer doubting his relationship with Robbie and knew that he still wanted to be with him, regardless of the lack of sex. I loved how much they cared about each other and were willing to talk things out and try to make things work. I mean, even that brief snippet of a scene when they were lying together on the bed—it touched my heart that they were really trying and willing to work on things and were so comfortable with and in love with each other. I get that maybe clinging onto each other instead of moving on isn’t necessarily the healthiest thing, but I 100% understand why they’re doing it and think that their relationship, in the way that they treat each other, is really healthy.

My only negative is that, though this book was maybe a tad more emotional than the first, I was disappointed that there wasn’t more emotion wrought out of the characters and the situation. The emotion was there, but I didn’t really feel it. But as I mentioned in my review of the first book, it’s probably the perfect amount of emotion for people who don’t like heart-wrenching but still like just a little bit of feels, or for anyone who needs a break from emotional and wants to read something lighter. And the ending of this one did give me some warm, fuzzy feels at least.

Overall, this was a great sequel with a fun mystery plot, snarky humor, and likeable characters!

So I don’t know if it’s too early for me to be saying this since this is just book 2 in a 5 book series I believe but I’m going to say it anway…I LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!

I had such a good time reading this book. It is just such a steady consistently good ride without being boring or predictable (which I have found is very hard to find). Duncan is slowly moving up my scale of favorite characters he is just so dry and sarcastic while genuinely wanting to help and protect the people around him. And sweet dead Robbie is just to precious for this world. And the rest of the characters are fantastic I don’t know the last time I had a cast of characters and didn’t dislike at least one of them but all them just work so well together and with the story. The plot flows amazingly well, the plots developed, makes sense and is interesting.

Full disclaimer: I’m an animal lover and was a little hesitant about reading this book in the series because it’s about animals being controlled and was worries I’d have to read about them being harmed but amazingly the author managed to avoid that while keeping the book exciting. There is one particular scene involving Duncan and a wolf that had hearts in my eyes the way Duncan handled it. Plus Winter the cat is possibly my new favorite character in this story so I'm happy about how that turned out :)

On to the next very soon!
(I'm so mad at myself for putting this series off)

I enjoyed the first book Pale as a Ghost, and this sequel is just as enjoyable.
Stephen Osborne makes me laugh; that's a great gift in an author, and I love him for it.
The plot sounds, quite frankly, over the top, yet somehow as you're reading it, it all makes sense. It's a roller-coaster ride of improbability brought to life and made believable. At least for the duration of the book.
I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to be entertained and leave feeling happy with a big smile on your face.
Just have to add what a gorgeous cover this one is. The characters; the gorgeous guy with the gun (so hot!); the moon and the bats... lovely. Sums up the quirkiness of the book in a cohesive way - just like the book itself. DSP and Anne Cain - again!
