Crackscam is a fast-paced action thriller set in an authentic background in which ordinary people become unwillingly caught up in the harsh and merciless world of illegal drug dealing. The action takes place over four days and is seen through the eyes of a production engineer, Oliver Howsen, who finds out from a young accountant that there is a major financial irregularity in the firm's books. Together, they are propelled from tranquil Cotswold life into a ruthless world of illicit drugs, building to the final dramatic denoument. It is a journey of menace, anxiety and ingenuity - with a touch of humour and romance - as two young people struggle to outwit the forces of organised crime.
This is a good fast paced thriller that has plenty of twists and turns and red herrings to keep the reader guessing without being overly confusing or complicated. The characters are well written and the main storyline is very engrossing, however I did find some of Oliver's monologue moments a little over done with far too many questions being thrown up (it could just be that I don't tend to think in questions and find it strange when fictional characters do) and I did find this detracted from the story a little bit. I also think that could have benefited from being a bit longer to allow the author more time/space to develop the main plot and the romance between Oliver and Emma, which came across as developing almost instantaneously as there was little room for any depth to this aspect of the book. However despite these niggles this is a good read that is perfect for a couple of hours of escapism.
