Jess is no ordinary vampire. Protected by the Manchester vampire clan, and initiated by her family’s east coast American coven, she is sought after by every dark witch and warring vampire faction. Jess must fight if she wants to keep hold of her friends, her sanity and finally her existence.
As the dead bodies of human girls begin to stack up, and her recently accepted vampire boyfriend, Daniel, finds himself in prison, Jess goes on a crazy, forbidden trip to London, racing against time to save an old friend and solve the mystery behind Daniel’s incarceration. In battling new enemies and finding new friends, Jess’s confidence finds room to grow, but who will she lose along the way?
Emma Mills is a stay-at-home mum, who after a recent move some 200 miles south now lives in the beautiful county of Somerset, in the UK, with her husband and two children.
Emma writes Young Adult fiction. WitchBlood was her debut novel, published in 2012 and quickly followed by WitchCraft and WitchLove. Emma published WitchHunt, the finale to the series, late in 2013. Flying With Fire is a new YA novel, to be followed by on a completely new YA project for 2015.
Witchcraft is the newest book in the fantastic Witchblood series by author Emma Mills. As I have said many times on this blog, what makes a book great for me is one that hooks me emotionally. Love or hate, sadness or happiness, anger or laughter. Those are the things that pull me in and keep me there. Emma Mills knows how to do just that. When I went into this book, after reading the first, I was firmly Team Daniel. But by the end of this one, I am now Team Luke, thanks to the emotionally charged story of this novel! It was a bit darker than the first, taking me up, down, to the left, and to the right, and I loved every minute of it.
The story between Jess and Daniel was at times as wonderfully romantic and sweet as in the first book. But eventually I got so involved with their story that Daniel and his behavior began to to annoy me as much as it did Jess! And the interference of Eva, Daniel's maker, had me wondering just where that relationship was going. Luke, who made me want to slap him in the last book with his narrowmindedness, turned around for me. What I like best about Emma's writing is that it is real , even when dealing with fantasy beings. While Luke did turn around, it wasn't complete. He wasn't perfect, but flawed. The same with Daniel, even when he annoyed me. The characters were real and their fantastical side was just a part of them, rather than being all that they were. That made the entire story much more engrossing!
If you haven't read Witchblood, read that first and then IMMEDIATELY begin Witchcraft! :)
This book is too good for words! I honestly don't have anything bad to say about it which if you know me you'd know that's astonishing. The characters are well developed and the story pulls you in from the very start! I would suggest reading the first book Witchblood before reading this, but that book was just as good as well! The end of Witchcraft leaves you craving more needless to say I CANNOT wait for Emma Mills to publish this! STRONGLY SUGGEST EVERYONE READ THIS IF YOU LOVE A GOOD BOOK WOTH LOTS OF LOVELY SUPERNATURALS! :) <3
I read 'Witchblood' yesterday and found it unique and fascinating, the fact that it was set in Manchester made it even more so, my only issue was Jess, at times she seemed a little too childish but I couldn't wait to start this book. Now I'm not spoiling the story because this happens in the first chapter. It's not often Jess is left alone, and for good reason, anyway she's been left alone with one instruction 'do not answer the door' so of course she answers the door, invites the person in, allows them upstairs, alone where the super secret 'book of shadows' is just left lying on the dresser, I mean seriously..... I know, I know she's only eighteen am I being too harsh, am I that out of touch with young people but then I think no, my youngest is seventeen and my house is constantly full of friends of that age and I can honestly say that none of them are that stupid and this a real problem for me and one it would would appear is not shared since most people loved this book, I find it difficult to get past it and struggle to like a book where I don't particularly like the main character. I considered stopping at this point and I think if I'd had a break between the books I wouldn't have continued but I literally started this one as soon as I'd finished the last, so I continued on, this wasn't the only 'idiot' moment Jess had and I'd decided that I'd finish this book and not continue with the series but apart from these moments the book was good and towards the end Jess started to show some maturity so I'm going to continue on with the series. I appreciate that maybe Jess was written like this to show how she grows and matures through the series but it still didn't sit well with me and yes I'm fully aware that I'm not the target audience of these books but I do read a lot of youth books, often recommending them to my children so it's not as if I'm not used to them, Spencer Baum's 'Girl's Wearing Black' is a fantastic youth series and one of my favourites, so it's with my fingers crossed that I start the next book.
While I found this story to be as exhilarating as the first one, I could only give it four stars because it left me wanting. The read is excellent but the twist in the plot infuriated me... What can I say I love a good love story and Daniel was ripped from "my life" I was left empty and alone. (pathetic I know) Emma Mills did a wonderful job in telling her story and I'm definitely hooked, I just wish the series was complete so I could maybe get some closure! Job well done!
Well I did not expect this story to go down this route. This follows Jess and her battle between being a vampire and being a witch. Because she is both this makes her very appealing to both vampires and witches. Her and Daniel have to battle more forces and they become unbonded. She makes a few new friends in her attempt to save her best friend Alex, who has been used as bait. The book leaves you with unanswered questions and the need to read the next instalment. This book follows Jess as her powers improve and she starts to come to terms with who she is. My least favourite character is cole. I think he plays a very dirty game and has become greedy with power. My favourite character is Brittney. I think she deserves a second chance after realising her mistake. It's also interesting to watch lukes part in all this
Jess, a seventeen year old girl who is half vampire and half witch. She is not like other vampires who bites a human to drink their blood. Although she doesn't bite them she still drinks human blood that comes from a pack. She is afraid that if she drinks from a human she will not stop before she drains them of all their blood and they die. Jess is a very independent girl who likes no one telling her what to do. She likes to make her own choices and on occasion does.
Eva, Daniel's maker finds Jess' families Book Of Shadow and gives it to her. Jess being half vampire, half witch everyone wants Jess to be a part of their "family" especially now that she has her book of Shadow. The white witches, the witches that practices black magic and other vampire clans all what Jess. Jess is a very powerful witch and they want her on their side. Jess is a new witch and doesn't know how to use her powers. She needs someone to teach her how to use them.
When her human friend Alex comes up missing she wants to go looking for her on her own but Daniel her maker and Eva won't allow her to go by herself. Jess being a newly turned vampire it is to dangerous for her to be around humans by herself. But when Daniel is arrested by the angles, Eva being his maker is allowed to go with him to his cell. With Daniel and Eva gone Jess leaves with Luke to find Alex on her own.
Witchcraft is a very intense read that keeps the adrenaline flowing with all the twist and turns. You don't want to put it down, you want to keep turning the pages to find out what is going to happen next. I felt like I was in the same room as Jess seeing and feeling what she felt and saw. Emma makes you feel as if you are a part of Jess's world with her writing skills. It is like having esp you see the things that Jess sees through Emma's eyes. If you have not read Witchcraft then you need to read it now unless you have not read Witchblood the prequel to Witchcraft then you need to read Witchblood then Witchcraft.
In “Witchcraft,” the second entry in the “Witchblood” series, Emma Mills transports us back to a world that manages to seem so similar to, yet also so different from, the one we currently inhabit. And what a world it is—brimming with vampires, witches, angels, and an uneasy peace that the reader knows cannot last much longer!
Everyone’s favorite heroine, Jess, has been through some traumatic times and has undergone some dramatic changes … but she hasn’t seen anything yet. Before the reader can blink, Mills rockets Jess through a whirlwind of events that threatens to turn her world upside down and risk the lives of everyone she holds dear.
We’re reintroduced to old friends and introduced to new enemies. Jess is forced to do some unthinkable things, while being faced with unspeakable cruelty. And through it all, the cost of her decisions continues to grow. In a display of true literary prowess, Mills comes up with an ending that is at once satisfying, tragic, and suspenseful … while leaving the reader anxiously awaiting more.
Fans of YA, paranormal romance, and even light horror should check out “Witchcraft.” I highly recommend it.
Witchcraft sees Jess develop as a character into a headstrong, but unsure young woman / vampire, into a very sure one who's still headstrong.
We discover more about her witch powers and how they affect her as a vampire. Emma did a GREAT job going into the intricacies of certain spells and rituals which were highly accurate and true to [Wiccan] life practices.
We learn more about Luke too, and about Sebastian, the yummy, dark-haired vampire who clearly knows more than he ever says in an Eric Northman kind of way.
There were some super-sexy, blood-drinking scenes thrown in too ;)
All the characters from the first book are back, and we're introduced to 3 or 4 new ones who will undoubtedly be making an appearance in the next book... not to mention... the ENDING! OMG! Are there characters we will NEVER be seeing again??? Anything can happen in Emma's plot-filled stories...
This was ok but to honest I hadn't planned to continue on with the series, because I'm finding the mc Jess to be quite annoying making stupid decision after stupid decision, and the dialogue is still not written as well as it could be, but after the way this one ended, there are a couple of things that I need to know.......so I guess I'll be making a start on the third book anyway. We'll see how far I get.....
Holland House Editing read and edited this fantastic continuing story of Jess. A beautiful young witch/vampire who goes on an amazing journey. Emma Mills creates a vast array of interesting, fun and quirky characters that you immediately love and chapter after chapter sinks you in further into the story, making you only want more.
A excellent second book in a series of 2 (right now) the third book will be released January 2013.It was very exciting and filled with twists and turns. There were witches, angels, and vampires. A MUST read!!!
This author is great. I can not wait for the last installment of the series. Loving the characters and the story. Leaves you wondering and pondering what will happen next.
After finding myself completely engrossed in WhichBlood Book#1, naturally, I downloaded the rest of the series and flew straight onto Book#2.
This is by far a brilliant read! Whichcraft steps up a notch from WhichBlood Book#1. You see quite a bit of action in this story, Jessica finally embraces ( to a degree ) What she is and for that reason becomes much stronger with her powers. We meet quite a few new characters which I really enjoyed and glad to see one or two will be there in the next book.
Wow, the ending of this book was quite impressive and emotional. OMG Daniel and Eva... But I do feel we are seeing a lot of deception, and we are going to get quite a few answers answered in the next book. Well, I hope anyway!
I'm a sucker for romance. I can't read a book without it. I'm hoping we hit a point somewhere in this story that the romance part is going to pick up a little. We have a kinda love triangle going on... But not... Jessica a newbie vampire cross Witch and Luke the Angel boy were together, Jessica is now with Daniel the brooding & needy Vampire but Luke still has feelings Kinda for Jessica and she still thinks about him, but she has growing feelings for Daniel, while Daniel hates Luke and Luke hates Daniel as they see each other as competition... Well, you get my drift... But we are not really given any great romance side to any of it... So I'm hoping somewhere Jessica finds her Firework, the one who sparks up her character.
This is a really enjoyable read and again flying onto Book#3 Witch Love.
Wow what a great continuation of this series, I couldn't put it down. Love the way it's exploring into each character and how it's continuing on. Can't wait for next book.
I think this book can stand on it own but I highly recommend reading the first book in the series, Witchblood, before reading Witchcraft, which is book 2 in the series.
Witchcraft's first chapter opens with Jess, who is half vampire half witch, trying to understand her "witch side". Eva, who is Daniel's sire and has become Jess' friend, has given her a very powerful spell book that has been passed down in Jessica's family for generations. Jess is not very strong for a vampire because she is refusing to drink blood from a living donor, still preferring bagged blood from a blood bank. Jessica is also not very good about following instructions. She feels no compulsion to obey her sire (Daniel) as a new vampire should, but she is definitely attracted to him. Her independence and inability to do as told leads her in to trouble time and time again.
During a short period of time that she is left alone she is kidnapped by some dark magic witches. With her strength negatively affected she still battles to escape and save her ancient book of spells. Luke and other fallen angels show up to help her fight for her freedom.
Upon her return to Daniel's, a white magic witch is waiting to complete her ceremony for her induction in to the coven. All this is done with the vampire leader (Sebastian) permission as he is hoping to share her with the witches in a deal that will give him access to her potential power. With her induction completed the two supernatural parts of Jessica battle over her soul and strange side effects impact all of those around her.
Her potential powers also bring forth new enemies. A rival area vampire leader (Cole) kidnaps Alex, Jessica's human best friend, in hopes of trapping Jessica and her powers for himself. As the situation escalates, the leaders of the supernatural world must step in to protect humanity. Battles are fought as all interested parties fight to posses Jessica and she struggles fiercely to maintain her independence. But not everyone Jessica cares about will walk away from this fight.
I love this series. I can hardly wait until the 3rd book, WitchLove is released. The author, Emma Mills website posts a January 2013 release date. This is a series that I will look forward to re-reading just as the new book is ready for release.
Wow! This book was so good! The first book took me a little bit to get into but about half way through it I was hooked, so I was SUPER excited to read WitchCraft! I think the best part about this series is that, its about Vampires yes, but there is a Vampire Witch! That is just so unusual that it makes me excited to read how it turns out!
So this book starts basically where the last one finished, Jess still refuses to drink human blood, but she does drink from Daniel (which is kinda hot) Eva is still around and although she is like a major B most of the time, she is still pretty cool although I still think she has an angle, I dont trust her completly yet.
Then there is Daniel, *sigh* and Luke... I LOVE Daniel, and if Jess chooses Luke over him I may start screaming. Luke is such a pompaus JERK! Yes he is an angel, but well he DID let Jess die so he has NO reason to hate her for what HE allowed her to become!
But Daniel? WOW! Yes he is controlling, and gets very jelous if Jess talks to Luke, and ok maybe that equals a non healthy relationship but, he is also so sweet and he IS a vampire so i understand where his jealousy because well vampires are very territorial right? But I think what I love about him the most is that is it SO obvious that he loves Jess and just wants to protect her. You know, this Daniel, Jess, Luke love triangle kinda reminds me of Damen, Elena, and Stephan (yes I am a HUGE TVD fan) but seriously? both guys love her a different way, and just like on TVD I side with the 'Bad Boy' so I am totally Team Daniel!
I gave this book 5 stars because it was a very fast paced book, and SO much happens, and I love Jess's new ability with her magic and how it makes her much more confident. She still really needs to think before she acts though.
I also generally really hate cliffhangers, but in this book it worked so perfectly! I was mad and upset and going slightly CRAZY because I didnt know what happened with Daniel! But the fact that I had WitchLove waiting on my Kindle, as well as little things that were said and not said at the end of this book really helped me through it.
*Special thanks to the author Emma Mills for providing copies of Witchblood for review*
Witchcraft is book two in the series, and honestly – I wasn’t sure how I was going to like it. I really enjoyed book one, Witchblood, but sometimes the second book can fall flat. That is not the case with Witchcraft! It is definitely a terrific addition to the series.
The book starts out with action, and it keeps the pace up the entire book through, and that’s just how I like it. There is still plenty of things going on in Jess’s life; she's still learning about all of her abilities - vampiric and witch. At times I thought it was just gratuitous action possibly, like the events were so short that they didn’t really feel like they belonged. However, they did do a good job of either introducing new characters or giving background and history for some events to happen later. So even though at the time it felt a little bit short, it wasn’t later when everything came together.
I also think that Jess’s character has grown quite a bit. It’s not like this book takes place far in the future, she’s still only a couple months into her new life. But she is definitely not as whiney and she is also more independent with her actions and her thought process. I definitely liked that, and it keeps me excited for book three, WitchLove.
Romance still isn’t really a focus in this series, which is also a welcome change. I read a lot of romance, so its nice to have something that puts it on the second string. However, with that said, I would love to see a novella or something with Jess and Daniel. Why? Because I feel bad for Daniel! He is really kind of getting the short stick in all of this. He loves Jess right away and expects a future with her, but her ability to have free will really throws a wrench in that. In book two things aren’t much different. She professes her love, but I don’t really think she proves it at all. I can understand all of Daniel’s insecurities regarding Jess and her heart. So yes, I feel bad for the vampire.
I am definitely enjoying this series. The reading goes fast and I find myself itching to start the third book right away. Unfortunately I have to wait a couple days. But I do have a review post on the Witchblood tour coming up later this month, so definitely come back and check it out then!
Review: Jess has just learnt that her heritage includes a family of witches. Then one of the shows up and initiates her into their coven. Now she’s a mix of both witch and vampire and everyone wants a piece of her. It’s really nice coming back to characters you love. Jess is now vaguely used to being a vampire, but still wants remnants of her old life, leading to a rather amusing scene involving tea.The being a witch makes for a new set of discoveries waiting to be made. Once again, she’s strong, independent and takes it all in her stride. I really like the supernatural mix of vampires, angels and witches. It’s not your typical mix, but it works really well. Each supernatural subset has their own society/heriarchy/ whatever and I really enjoyed seeing Jess navigate these. It’s a very quick read, or maybe it’s because I was kept reading it for ages. Or maybe both. The writing is descriptive, and also accurate in the cases of the Wiccan ceremonies. The first bit is mainly grounding the setting with Jess’ witchiness, still with a lot of action there, but the second part is where it builds up and people die and such. Wholly shipping Jess and Luke. We definitely get to know him a bit more (after not getting that much of him in Witchblood) and I think they share a deeper connection than her and Daniel, even if both of these boys are annoying to her at times. THE ENDING. EVIL AUTHOR. There are certain cliffhangers which should not be allowed to exist. This is one of them. Two of the characters who I was starting to really really like....and then.... WE DON’T KNOW. Must read Witchlove sooner rather than later!
Overall: Strength 4 tea to a mustread for any supernatural lover.
I was given a copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review.
This is the second book in the Witchblood Series. Sequels are not necessarily better than the first book. However, that is not the case with this book. I loved it!
Jess is a fascinating character. After being turned into a vampire, her latent witch powers are called forth. She is still struggling with her new vampire life (still having cravings for toast!). However, after being initiated into her American family's coven, things start to happen that will test her to her limits.
This is an exciting sequel that unites Jess with some old friends, and also with some new ones. I struggled to put this book down! I was taken on a journey from Manchester to London, and on a wild ride of danger and action. I made a comment in my review of Witchblood that Sebastian, the leader of the Northern clan of vampires, crept me out. He still does, but we get to see a bit of his life in this book, and it made me change my perception of him slightly. Jess also makes a new friend, in the shape of a 16 year old witch called Brittany.
Emma Mills has written a fantastic YA paranormal romance series that is completely unique. I love the way the story flows. It seems a bit more fluid compared to the first book. Perhaps it's because it's the second book, and she has found her stride. Whatever the reason, I found myself loving this story more. I certainly didn't see the ending coming! It's a bit of a shocker, let me tell you! I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the series to find out what happens next! I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a totally unique vampire/witch YA paranormal romance. - Lynn Worton (WaAR)
'Witchcraft' is the second book in a young adult paranormal romance series that follows Jessica - "Jess" - as she continues to adjust to her new life as a half-vampire witch. She has the powers of both supernatural beings, but the inability to control them. Now there are dark witches after her and a vampire war to deal with. On top of things, Daniel - Jess' vampire boyfriend - finds himself in prison and it's up to Jess to find out why he's in there and how to get him out. Jess must learn how to fight and how to depend on herself if she has any hope of staying alive and helping her friends.
This was a fun, if somewhat campy, paranormal teen book. The characters continued to be pretty shallow, although we do see some maturation and growth with Jess. There are romance issues to deal with on top of several supernatural beings that are introduced into the series. It's kind of hard to keep tabs on the multiple threads of the story as well as which characters are fighting with who and why. The plot was more in depth and layered than the first book, but the concepts aren't anything new to the genre. Most of the content continued to be at least mildly cliched and stereotypical, but I liked losing myself in the story. This series continues to be an interesting ride with an enjoyable plot line and fun (if confusing and shallow) characters. Recommended for fans of YA vampire fiction and those looking for a fun paranormal read.
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Jess is still sassy and I lover her for it. There's nothing worse than a limp lead character! But, her confidence is growing, especially when Susannah sows up on the doorstep and whips Jess into a black vortex. Thankfully, Luke (swoon) is on hand to save the day with the other angels.
This book concentrates on Jess being initiated as a witch and her fight to rescue her best friend Alex.
I was right beside Jess as she ran off to London, at the expense of pissing off Daniel and incurring the wrath of the leader of the London clan, Cole. I admit, I was cheering her on because although Daniel was growing on me, I'm still all for Jess and Luke getting back together - not that I see it happening, but I had my hope built up when Cole broke the bond between Jess and Daniel.
I admit that I shed a small tear when Luke told Jess that Alex's memory would be wiped and then Daniel and Eve were killed during the clean up. Yeah, the vamp's growing on me.
This was a 4 star book because certain aspects of the story were a little bit predictable. It didn't distract me from reading, but I guessed a fair few of the twist outcomes.
Guy number one ... wrong choice Guy number two ... wrong choice Ok, are we going to have the guy number three who would be the right choice for Jess? My thoughts about Daniel in the first book didn't change reading the second one. In the first book it felt that writer tried to force me to think that Jess and Daniel belong together and it seemed wrong, forced. Guy number one (Luke) seemed as the right choice because I didn't know anything about him, close to the end of the first book and now in the second it was obvious that he is far from the right choice for our girl. Some of Jess's choices/actions annoy me and I do need to remind myself that she is only seventeen. I won't even say how weird it is that Jess is best friend with Daniels ex-girlfriend / maker. Most of the time she is not sure what she is feeling, but she is only seventeen and I guess now is the time to grow up. So being annoyed with both love interests and hoping for a third right choice to show up in the next book I have to say that I enjoy reading this series and would buy the next book. What I also love is the location.
This book was even more exciting and explosive than the first. I couldn’t put it down and read it in only a few hours.
I was happy to see Jess more accepting of her new life, making her less whiny than in WitchBlood. As her transformation progressed with the help of her initiation, so Jess became more confident and independent. She no longer had to contend with bond that tied her to Daniel, and it was great that she was able to explore her feelings for him without it.
I really love the twist Mills has put on the vampire myth. I love how different Jess is, and the amazing abilities her witch blood has afforded her.
Each of the characters within this story has made their way into my heart, although I’m still on the fence about Luke. He has a long way to go before he’ll be deemed deserving of a place. Daniel, on the other hand, I adore. My heart shattered at the end of this book and I can’t wait to jump straight into book 3, if for nothing else but my sanity, because my broken heart could use some mending.
If you love vampires, but want something different, don’t hesitate to grab this series.
I quite enjoyed this second book in the series, Jess is a likable character and still having problems adjusting to being a vampire/witch. She is also dealing with the two men in her life Luke, an old boyfriend from her human days and Daniel a vampire who sired her and is very protective and controlling. I actually found Luke kind of annoying, he was so anti-vampire yet he made the decision to not let Jess die and now he is pissed off because she needs blood to survive. He needs to get over it already and either move on or at least shut up whinging that she is a vampire now. Daniel on the other hand is way too controlling and jealous of her past with Luke and that in itself is a problem for Jess. There is also dealing with her newly acquired witch powers, fending off dark witches and other vampires who want to control her and then her best friend goes missing. Life is never predictable and the ending is a cliff hanger for sure.
Witchcraft picks right up where Witchblood left off and jumps right into the action. This time the focus is on her growing witch powers and those that will stop at nothing to get Jess on their side making them either a very powerful coven or clan. I loved the story very much I couldn't put it down until I finished it! Jess is still as stubborn and naive as ever, she's so set on what she wants to do she misses the obvious traps until it's too late. I was a little irritated by this, thinking at what point will she finally get it, but then again she is new to the supernatural world and the wicked in disguise individuals that inhabit said world. I was happy when she finally let go of her feelings for Luke and gave into her love for Daniel. She still struggled with trusting him, but that didn't hold her back from wanting to see where their relationship could go. The ending I did not see coming and I have to say I'm hanging on by a thread for the final book which can't come soon enough!
The book has definitely improved, and I'm glad I had the chance to continue the story. This book is more focused on Jess' magic side and I loved how this was developed. People who know me, know how much I'm intrigued by spells & stuff, so I really enjoyed that side. I really have to thank Emma for naming a character after me, and I'm really excited about the role I've been given! I admit at the beginning I wasn't sure if I was evil or not, but you'll have to read the book to find out! :) Jess is impulsive as always, but this time I found her more tolerable. The only things I didn't enjoy were Alex's scenes. I don't think her shock was very believable. To me it looked like she was shocked by the events, but not that much. I think this could have been developed better. The HUGE cliffhanger was really unexpected, so I really hope the third instalment gets released soon as I need to know!!
