Overview Southern Belle--Living in the war-torn South, beautiful widow Samantha Winchester did all she could to keep hope alive for her family. Now she was heading west to be a bookkeeper in Abilene, Kansas.
Northern Soldier—Stripped of his rank during the war, Jack Barnett looked to restore his name by catching an embezzler who was skimming Army coffers. But he couldn’t believe that his assistant for the job was a woman!
From different worlds, they collided like a dust storm in the rugged Kansas cow town. Jack took a chance on the feisty beauty with the reddish-brown curls, and she surprised him with her ability and her courage. Samantha was upset that he had been a Northern soldier, but her anger melted when she looked into his slate-gray eyes. And, as they surrendered to the passion that swirled around them, they found the courage to take the sweetest gamble of the all.
ABILENE GAMBLER was originally published as ABILENE GAMBLE by Berkley Jove in August 1995 under the pen name Margaret Conlan
"First, a little biographical information as introduction: Born in Richmond, VA, I grew up in Northern Virginia in Arlington, close to Washington, D.C. I attended university and received a Bachelor's degree in English Literature & Journalism, married, and started my family there. All four of my daughters are grown and established in careers of their own and are literally scattered around the globe. I now reside in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado with two very demanding dogs."
I love Maggie Sefton's knitting series and was so excited to read something different from her. Most of this book was very good, though it took me awhile to read it as there is a lot of details and not a lot of action. Except all of a sudden there is a lot of action and it's over. The build up kind of dragged compared to the climax, which went too smoothly, I thought. I would still recommend this book if you like historical fiction but don't have very high expectations that this will measure up to her other books.
