I accidentally came across this series. Being familiar with the Front Mission game series I was interested to see how this would translate to comic format.

And I have to say what a first volume.

First, to make sure we are on the same page - mechas (or Wanzers as they are called in Front Mission) are in background here. We see them in heavy urban fighting or leading air assaults and beach-head capture. Art is great, and mechas truly dominate the battlefield.

What is in center are people caught in the storm of war - from civilians, journalists to military personnel. We see how war changes people, and how easy is to become horror junky, always needing more horrifying situations, in the end becoming sort of jackals or hyenas that smell blood and just know where to be to record the bloodshed and destruction - like notorious photo reporter who is common element in all the stories in this volume.

Modern war is not human in any way, or to be more precise it is as humane as any war in history. From this carnage nobody escapes unscathed.
What author's present very well is how, outside the island engulfed in war, life goes on, almost like nothing happened. I say almost because governments involved in the conflict start sending their troops in ever greater numbers and this I have a feeling will play a role in the other volumes.

Excellent graphic novel, highly recommended.
