Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Oh, Sanji, what are you doing? What are you doing? You were supposed to be the chivalric white knight that respects women and protects them from the worse types! Your lechery and amorousness were meant to be endearingly lighthearted and with some limits to them, not genuinely threatening! No good. This one trait's been gradually dominating his character, and in this volume - in his battle with Absalom - it tips over into becoming old news... yet even from here it continues on and on and still shows no signs of the author growing tired of it.
Good thing the rest of the volume's got no complaints. The last two ones were largely spent on figuring out what was going on with this place, running away from fights, getting spooked, and getting beaten... but now we know exactly what's about and what's at stake, and the counterattack begins. A great charge right at the start as the heroes get serious. Luffy has his first encounter with the Warlord villain... who, instead of beating the shit out of him and leaving him for dead like the last guy, just runs away. What a craven lazy git. Yet he still manages to be pretty threatening when he tries to.
At the opposite end, Zoro has a great fight, and Usopp gets one of his best moments period. Usopp could use more highlight in the post-timeskip, to be honest. Chopper finds himself at the center of surprisingly strongly-tugged heartstrings, a great speech about the value of life and what a great scumbag Hogback is. Franky doesn't get to fight, but he does get a great gag, so it's all good.
And then there's Oars. Right there on the cover, ending the volume about to kick the whole crew's collective asses. A real cliffhanger.
One Piece, Vol. 48 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next eleven chapters (460–470) of the on-going manga series.
This tankōbon continues the Thriller Bark Arc. Just when the Straw Hats start looking for Geckō Moria they run into Oars, the gigantic zombie who has been given Luffy's shadow. Before they deal with him, the crew splits up to get rid of the leaders of Moria's army.
Sanji saves Nami from one of them, Usopp defeats another, and Nico Robin and Chopper take care of the third. Roronoa Zoro, meanwhile, fights the zombie that houses Brook's shadow, and when it is defeated Brook is restored to his former self. Their immediate objectives completed, the crew turns their attention to Oars.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part it is written and constructed rather well. It is mainly a battle tankōbon where the Straw Hat Pirates are battling to get the shadows of Brook, Sanji, Roronoa Zoro, and Monkey D. Luffy so they won't be used by zombies and rescue Nami, who had disappeared. Everything was done, except getting Luffy's shadow back, which happens to be held by the biggest zombie of them all – Oars.
All in all, One Piece, Vol. 48 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

This volume was fun, focusing on Luffy and co as they are still fighting zombie son thriller bark and we learn of the origins of different characters, Usopp is fighting Perona meanwhile Chopper is fighting Hogback and his zombies and like there is this great moment where he gives a speech and is able to sort of convince the zombies! Then Zoro vs Brook's shadow and the battle is epic and so well done! Meanwhile Oz has completely submitted to Moria and is after strawhats, what will their fate be? Its an interesting story and continues character progression and build sup on different mysteries. I loved this volume!
2025 reread : I am reviewing this a couple of days after having finished it and honestly most of what I remember is 'fighting happens'. Which isn't bad but isn't my favorite. I do like how at the end the crew teams up againt the giant zombie. We rarely see them team up all together like that.
I like how the fights aren't stretched uselessly. Plus some of them are very cool. Like the one against Perona. While the others show how much our characters has progressed in the last few arcs.
it has some good moments (zoro vs. the samurai, usopp vs. perona, and chopper just being the absolute best) but i fear thriller bark is not for me. after water seven and enies lobby this just feels... meh. and the way women (nami, robin and cindry) are being treated throughout this arc makes me uncomfortable
SO FUN SORRY! (also i’m ignoring sanjis reason because there must be another reason he wanted the fruit … right??) ANYWAYS. USOPP V PERONA. AMAZING. LOVED IT. CHOPPER AND HOGBACK. UGH AMAZING LOVE MY BOY CHOPPER. ZORO AND RYUMA??? straight HEAT. i love their little 1 v 1 it’s so fun to see omg and idk man thriller bark is A WONDERFUL TIME
"No matter how thick the fog lies on these waters, there's no guarantee that the sun won't shine through."
The momentum really kicks in here as the chaos in Thriller Bark ramps up. The crew is split again, and each group finds themselves tangled with strange enemies—from ghosts that zap your will to fight to zombies trying to force a wedding. The way each character handles their opponent feels true to form, with some standout moments in both comedy and combat. Sanji's over-the-top reaction to Absalom’s behavior is ridiculous, but somehow still satisfying. Meanwhile, Zoro and Franky chasing after the legendary zombie samurai adds a cool mix of intrigue and swordplay to the madness.
The pacing in this volume is quick, and the transitions between different group battles are smoother than in the previous one. Usopp’s interaction with Perona’s “Negative Hollows” is a fun twist that reminds you how Oda balances humor in the middle of danger. Luffy continues his relentless drive forward, this time running into Gecko Moria’s powers head-on, and the clash of ideals starts to shine through. You can really feel the buildup toward a bigger confrontation without it dragging the plot down. Each fight has its own flavor, and the action keeps you locked in without feeling repetitive.
One thing that still bugs me is how names and techniques get translated instead of just being romanized. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before, but I really hate it—it messes with the tone and takes me out of the world. Annotations would go a long way without dumbing things down. Still, this volume brings a lot more weight and sharper momentum to the arc. There’s a real sense that something major is brewing, but it still gives room for each Straw Hat to shine in their own way.
THRILLER BARK ARC - PART 3 1. usopp not being affected by the ghosts is brilliant because that's true - he is a little negative missy. once again, what a funny and clever little way to circumvent the problem, mr. oda. and him winning against the girl - LOOOL. the battle of negativity and lying, clearly usopp's gonna win.
2. zoro's new sword!!! i love it, it looks insanely cool
Straw Hat Pirates want to get their shadows back and save Nami. They split into two teams.
Battle occured: - Chopper vs Dr. Hogback - Robin vs Cindry - Sanji vs Absalom - Usopp vs Perona - Sogeking vs Perona - Brook vs Ryuma - Zoro vs Ryuma - Straw Hat Pirates vs Oz
Sogeking is back 🔥 Usopp is on fire in this volume. He used his head to defeat Perona.
Its been way too long since I've read a One Piece volume and I've missed it so much. I was scared I wouldn't like it as much since it's been so long, but no, I'm still head over heels for the Straw Hats and their adventures.
