K-lee Klein grew up in the beautiful mountains of British Columbia and now lives only two hours away in Calgary, Alberta. Her life is blessed by three now-grown (but still spoiled) kids and an adorable grandson who calls her Gwaa Gwaa. She has a patient husband of over thirty years and spends her days being bossed around by a kitten named Poe, a senior feline called, Miss Chili, and a canine who thinks she's a princess, Chewie.

K-lee’s writing muse is terribly temperamental so to keep him close by and in-check, she had him inked on her left calf. Yet she still writes on his schedule and inspiration, and quite honestly, he can be a bit of a drama queen. K-lee writes mostly contemporary but has forayed into paranormal and urban fantasy, and her favorite tropes to write and read are hurt-comfort, friends to lovers, opposites attract, and relationships with children. Her biggest accomplishment as an author was overcoming all the hurdles to transition from publisher releases to her first self-published book.

Although K-lee considers herself to be an extroverted introvert and revels in her solitude, she very much enjoys traveling to conferences to meet up with friends old and new. She’s grateful for all the people in her life who accept her as she is and support her through the ups and downs as a mom, wife, friend, and joyfully obsessed writer.

Not only sweet and funny, but as cute as the cover implies. My only complaint is its too short lol. I would love a follow on, maybe a few years from now. Watching Gabe trying to control a toddler or saying goodbye at the school gates for the first time would be the perfect cherry on the top.

Still adorable and fun.

He Wants To Be A Baby-Daddy
3.5

Gabe is 42, Matteo is in his late 20's and the two of them are about to start a family. Gabe's twin sister, Mira, has offered to be their surrogate and the story follows this family unit throughout the pregnancy.

Gabe is a big tattooed bear of a man who's funny, a bit high strung, a bit of a worrier and kind of a like a teenager wrapped up in a 40-something year old's body. Gabe had me laughing more than once and I really enjoyed his character. He cares about people and he's hilarious when he's drunk.

Matteo is the rock in the couple. He's an old man wrapped up in a young man's body. He loves Gabe and Gabe's family. He also knows how to handle Gabe and lay his man's fears about being a daddy to rest. I liked Matteo a lot.

Mira, Gabe's sister, and her husband Bill were very cool secondary characters. Bill was damn near a genius when it came to Gabe and Mira. Mira's banter with Gabe was fun and had me smiling.

All in all this story was cute even if there wasn't any baby time in it. It's one of the better Father's Day daddy stories I've read and left me with a warm feeling.

This is a sweet, funny story about Gabe and Matteo, two guys in a longterm relationship making the decision to have a baby by surrogate. Matteo is the sperm donor and the willing mother is Gabe's twin sister, which is lovely and familial, and at the same time a bit weird and uncomfortable, at least for Gabe. I laughed out loud more than once at the interplay between Gabe and his sister, and loved the playful quality of Gabe and Matteo's relationship. This is a short story, but I heard rumors there may be a sequel. I'd love to see more of these two men and their journey through fatherhood.

Matteo and Gabe's relationship is in transition. Spanning from idea, to conception, to pregnancy to delivery, their relationship is evolving at a quick pace as they try to adjust to the impending delivery of their first child. This is a story about how Matteo and Gabe work together in their relationship as well as a story about their frightening and exciting impending fatherhood. Gabe is a 40-something silver bear of a sort, and unlike assumption is instead outgoing, lively, and sometimes immature. Matteo is his much younger twinkish partner, who despite his small frame is often the more dominant partner in their relationship, as well as more mature than Gabe. They've finally decided to start a family, and Gabe's twin sister Mira has offered to carry the child. It's part strange, in a sibling dynamic way, but also kindof amazing to them. The story is about the change they each go through and the change their relationship goes through in the months waiting until they become daddies.

I had a bit of a mixed reception to this story. I think that it did many things really well. The dialogue and characterization are fantastic. There is very little narration -- the bulk of the story is firmly rooted in setting, place and time and each character is immediately distinctive through their voices in the dialogue. It is often funny and sometimes touching. I really felt like the panic, fear and uncertainty over the course they'd set upon came across well and showed what the author's message seems to be -- that gay fathers go through the same issues and fears that other parents have to deal with.

The conflict of the story is a bit subtle, only within the uncertainty in Matteo and especially Gabe that they show one another behind closed doors. I didn't really have many problems with the story at all, except for the format, the time jumps. The story isn't shown in linear fashion, instead mixed so that each "chapter" or designated scene could either be in the future or past in relation to the last one, at varying lengths (12 weeks, 28 weeks). Not only did I find the way these were designated confusing (I had to stop and think every time, is that 12 weeks in relation to when??), but I suppose I didn't really see why the non-linear story-telling was needed in the first place. It made the story feel a bit choppy to me, and though it didn't distract me terribly, it made me wonder just what the point was, and was I missing it?

All in all, this is a solid Fathers and Kids story. I usually like the stories where the children play a more prominent role better, but even though this story focuses on the time before the birth, I still felt like the idea of children became a character in the story all it's own, like a tulpa created by the two characters Matteo and Gabe, from overthought, whether good or bad. I definitely enjoyed the story, and I liked that the main character's roles were so clearly mixed up (dominant, mature young twink with immature, older bear). I had one little niggle: Bill (Mira's husband), often remarks to Matteo things like, this is how you deal with them together, referring to Gabe and twin sister Mira. But Matteo and Gabe have seemingly been together a while and the twins are pretty close, wouldn't he have already gotten to know the family dynamics pretty well?

I'd recommend this one. I liked it even though there were a few things that I had to think about and didn't quite seem to work for me. Pretty Good.

Gabe is 42 years old and Matteo I guess is about 28. Matteo is the mature, level headed sexy twink and Gabe is the huge muscular bear but is hilariously childish and immature (he is responsible and a clean freak though). The interaction between Gabe and his twin sister Mira is hilarious! Snark galore had me snorting in laughter and Gabe's antics were so out of character from a bear of a man I estimate to be at least 6'4. I seriously recommend this to everyone. Especially gay men who want children and considering a surrogate. Matteo is far from just a pretty face and gorgeous body Submissive-- he is the cool and collected top yoga instructor (those guys earn a lot)who balances out Gabe's immaturity and is understandably adored by everyone.

This was surprisingly the best among the 4 DADDY books I got from MLRpress. It was the one I had least expectations from and expected a 3 star rating at most.

LOVED this book!! I haven't laughed out so many times in I don't know how long. And it's a short story too! 48 pages and it didn't feel short at all. K-lee did a fantastic job showing Gabe and Matteo's love, strength and weaknesses so well. And how they knew exactly when the other needed them. Loved how Gabe and Mira interacted! Reminded me of me and my siblings. lol And Bill, yeah he's a genious. This is def a fav of mine and I can't wait to read more of Ms. Klein's work!

I really loved this little story! It had humor, heart, and just enough sarcastic repartee to keep me chuckling the entire time. And at the end when I was wiping my eyes for the hundredth time it wasn't due to just the incredibly humorous storytelling but to a genuinely sweet story that ended with such tenderness that--well, yes--I needed a tissue or two.

The story is a simple one. It takes us through the process of two men using a surrogate to have a baby that they can adopt for their own. But this is not just any surrogate--no, this is the sister of one of the father's to be--Gabe. His twin sister to be exact. Two wonderful things you should know about Gabe--first he is a bear who likes to bottom--and the second is that he is in love with a younger man who is often mistaken, despite his age, for a twink--Matteo or Matty as Gabe lovingly calls him.

Matty is the calmer of the two--and he guides his boyfriend Gabe through the treacherous waters of fatherdom with true finesse and wisdom. Gabe is a neurotic mess who loves his sister but who has such a fear of anything girly that the simple act of going through breathing exercises with her is beyond his endurance. It had something to do with her enormous breasts resting on his arms as he is forced to rub her belly--I'm not sure as I was laughing so hard I could barely see the words on the page at that point!

The remarkably well drawn minor characters of Mira (Gabe's sister and baby Mommy) and her husband Bill are absolutely hysterical. Bill the fount of pregnancy wisdom becomes Matty's hero. Here is just an example of the delightful imaginings of K-lee Klein's fertile imagination that is given voice by Bill at delivery time:

"Trust me, she's like a she-devil on crack when those contractions hit and she wants absolutely no one in her space. I've seriously feared for my balls in the past when I got too close."

At this point I was gasping for air from laughing so much--primarily because of interchanges between Gabe and Matty like this one:

"I did it, Matty. I broke of the most coveted of gay rules in the gay rule book."

"There's a gay rule book?" He slipped the keys between his fingers, his head cocked to the side in thought. "Keys? Rule book? Oh! You did not!"

"I did." Gabe's eyes stayed shut but he tossed a hand in the air for emphasis.

Matteo almost choked on the laughter threatening to burst from his throat. "You bought a mini-van?"

I laughed till it hurt to draw breath. K-Lee Klein is a master at characterization--her men breathe--they lift off the page and stand there in front of you and you--lucky reader--get to watch their story unfold.

I cannot give this novella enough praise! It was a lovely tribute to gay fathers and a well-written story to boot!

But this--well--this dear reader is what was truly the best part of this story. Matty, strong, sure Matty who throughout the book is a veritable wall for Gabe to lean on--always reassuring, always calm, until the actual birth. Here is his moment--such love--such remarkable love Ms. Klein puts down on the page.

One thing needs to be very clear on this story – you have got to enjoy the process of pregnancy. Not the making of the baby, but it is the countdown to the baby of Gabe and Matteo, surrogate mothered by Gabe’s twin sister, Mira (who is a joy unto herself, the way she talks and acts. A great female character, yay!) The story begins with the “it’s time!” phone call (loved them immediately, Matteo for being huffy the all-important sticky-note didn’t get to be on his side of the bed, and Gabe for being panicked enough to try to put on Matteos’ underwear).

The Twink and the Bear, that is how Matteo and Gabe are described. Gabe is big, tattooed, tough, and well, bearish. Matteo is more delicate, with wide eyes a very young face and very much the more centered of the two. Big bad Gabe is high strung, and that is SO adorable.

Gabe is so nervous, so panicked, so wanting to be a daddy yet, wow. He tries to play it off as if Matteo is too young, but everyone knows it’s just another cover up for Gabe being scared. When they go to dinner with Mira and her husband Bill to celebrate the pregnancy, Gabe just cracked me up. From his toast to “my fabulous sister and her own more fabulous uterus”, to asking Matteo for sex with drool on his mouth, to humping Matteo’s leg while trying to get undressed for a shower, to his morning after whine, he just made me smile.

Matteo is the cool one, scared but keeping it inside. He accepts the breaking of the gay rule book (Gabe bought an SUV! A hybrid!) Together, they are going to be some rockin’ daddies.

These guys are just so cute, their family so loving. I would love to see how they are adjusting to fatherhood (subtle hint, Ms. Klein). Very sweet.

Cutest book cover ever. I've seen this cover on other books too and it still charms me every time I see it. That was the extent of my enjoyment, however.

This book did nothing for me. It seemed formulaic and made use of one of the tropes I dislike: the childish partner. It does not matter if the childish partner here is male, as opposed to the Barbie female or is the bear and the older of the couple. Some people, from reviews I read, were apparently enthralled by this mix-up. I found it transparent and the immaturity was still grating. I also found the writing sophomoric.

There was a lot of repetition and conspicuous attempts at humour. The bickering was forced and un-funny, the "twink's" continuous mention of "my man" was annoying (we got it), the sentiment was syrupy, and the time plotting was overdone. Plus, being short, there was little development.

It just read generically and like a coercible effort.

Not much to sink your teeth into here. It's cute enough, but I bet if you sat down and imagined you were a gay man (maybe you are!) awaiting the birth of your baby, your experience would be just as satisfying.

Nice, slightly humorous short story with cuteness all around. A good enough in between read or in my case, a pleasant way to defrag the brain after an intense read.

Cheers.

The cover is adorable and earned one star all on its own. The story is okay. The characters aren't very fleshed out and, while I liked the format the author chose, I think it would have been much more effective for a longer story as it felt quite rushed.

Perfect for Father’s Day

Gabe and Matteo love each other and Gabe’s family loves Marty. Gabe’s sister Mira gives them the ultimate gift by donating her eggs and her body as surrogate. This story is brilliantly framed out in snapshots throughout the pregnancy that let you know what the fathers-to-be are like as a couple and a glimpse of what kind of fathers they will be. It’s beautiful and funny and full of life.

I have to admit I love a beautiful book cover and I think the cover to Countdown to Daddies is totally adorable! The cover alone would make me want to purchase the book (I know…it’s a sickness, right? LOL) Since it’s also a K-lee Klein book AND it has a gorgeous cover, well it’s simply a no-brainer for me to want to read and review it.

The blurb does an excellent job at describing this little gem of a book. Matteo and Gabe have been together for five years. They have a wonderful relationship, but they both feel like something is missing from their lives. They want children, but with the problems with gay men adopting AND the hassle of finding a worthy surrogate mother, makes them wonder if they’ll ever have children of their own. When Gabe’s twin sister offers to be a surrogate for them, the next nine months begins to prepare them for being the daddies they long to be.

I loved this book. Ms. Klein writes compelling, thought-provoking stories with characters that live and breathe off of the written page. Between her sexy, well written characters and the intense emotional connection they have together, it keeps this reader anxiously wondering what will happen next. I loved the relationship Gabe and Matt had together. The love and respect they had for one another was so intense it really resonated with me as a reader. I also adored the humorous banter between them and other family members. There were many times I found myself laughing out loud from the things they said and the way they communicated and teased each other. This book is definitely an uplifting, feel-good read that totally had me hooked from the first page to the last word.

Funny, heartfelt and beautifully written, Countdown to Daddies left me with a happy heart and a huge smile on my face. I loved every second of this book and hated to see it come to an end. It’s the great mix of sweetness and romance that would be perfect pick-me-up on a cold, dreary winter’s day. Highly Recommended!

Oh man, as if that cover isn't enough to make my ovaries 'splode then the story sure is! Adorable...and well-written beyond the surface cuteness. I loved the uncertainty, the fear, the grumpiness. I really adored how the older character was the MC that actually needed to mature a bit in the story.

It was odd, though, having read another book (Las Palabras De Amor - Words of Love) by this author earlier in the week to have both female characters (who were both pretty sanguine about giving children they birthed to biological fathers) were named Mira. Not only that, but in each story a male MC had the last name Torres. Husband names weren't the same (Jerry/Bill) so I don't think it's meant to be the same people...but still way confusing to your readers to recycle specific names like that for somewhat similar stories.

Synopsis: Gabe and Matteo have decided to have children, and Matteo's sister has agreed to carry them. As they discover that they are having twins, and deal with becoming fathers for the first time, they also have to deal with helping Matteo's sister throughout her pregnancy. Matteo is older than Gabe, and has never really wanted to become a family man, because he fears it will make him one of "those" people.

What I liked: Gabe. In spite of the fact that he was the younger man in the relationship, he seemed to be the more mature of the two. I liked how steady he was, and how supportive he was with Matteo's sister.

What I didn't like: Matteo. 40-something and still worried about partying and having fun? Come on, it's time to grow up.

Such a sweet and funny little story. I loved all the witty banter between not only Matteo and Gabe, but also with Mira and Bill. And Gabe's actions often had me cracking up as well (starting with when he tried to put on Matteo's underwear by mistake in his haste to get to the hospital). Even in the midst of all the chaos, the tenderness and love between Matteo and Gabe was simply beautiful. Brought back good memories for me from when my own kids were born :)

These two guys were so funny, they had me in stitches. Gabe and Matty have been together for five years and are ready to settle down and raise a family. Gabe's sister offers to carry the baby for them so each of the men has a biological connection to the child. The story follows Gabe and Matty as the countdown to the baby's due date approaches.

There's no doubt in my mind that Gabe and Matty will make wonderfully loving parents! This story was short, but very sweet.

This was really sweet and beautiful, not only the wait for the birth and the MCs relationship, but the entire dynamic of the characters. Really beautifully written. I think one of my favourite things about this was the fact that it was Gabe's sister's idea to help give them what they wanted the most, all the time while her husband never once showed any doubt about the process.
