About the author

Ms.Susan D. Jewell has studied wildlife from Maine to Florida by motorboat, airboat, canoe, airplane, helicopter, tree-climbing, scuba, and muddy feet. She previously worked for the National Audubon Society and National Park Service and is now a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (since 1992). Her previous books include Exploring Wild South Florida and Exploring Wild Central Florida.

This is a guide book of Southern Florida from Lake Okeechobee to the Florida Keys and the Dry Tortugas. It covers the federal lands such as the Everglades, state, county, and city parks plus some private lands.

The book covers how to get to each area using roads or by water, what hiking trails there are, and various camping spots. It describes what animals, plants and birds are in the area. It's a must for birders, botanists, and those people who just want to see what south Florida is all about.

A good introduction to wild south Florida. The author has a "clear voice" -- even though this is a guidebook, her opinions come through the pages.
