The Little Mermaid living in her underwater world always wants to be one of the people who live 'on mountains, in deserts, and beside the sea where the sky arches above them and soft breezes blow'. But she knows that with her tail instead of legs that is not possible.
But one day while swimming underwater she rescues a prince who is drowning after his ship has been shipwrecked. She takes him to the shore and deposits him on the sand and then departs back to whence she came.
She often thinks about the prince and longs to be with him as a human but she realises that is not possible. That is until a witch comes along and tells her that she could make her a human with only one problem and that is that she will be unable to speak.
The Little Mermaid takes the chance and finds herself with humans and indeed she meets up with the prince, who she instantly falls in love with. But, even though he likes her very much, he has other ideas and goes on to marry someone else.
The Little Mermaid is sad and does not know what to do until her sisters appear in the water alongside the boat she is on and tell her that they have arranged with the witch for her to return to her underwater world - but there is a condition attached.
She cannot fulfil the condition but she takes one last look at the prince and is then able to return to become a mermaid once again - that is until something else happens to her ...
This little book is almost the same as the one I had as a child. It is the nearest I can find even though it was printed some years later. The story is very similar but the pictures are a bit different to my old book. Even so it has a treasured place on my bookshelf linking me with my childhood reading.
A beautifully illustrated book based on the original story of the Little Mermaid! No Disney ‘Happy Ever After’ here, in fact, I don’t even like the prince in this story! I mean, he’s really selfish! But this book was the first book I read which inspired my love for mermaids, this is where it all began for me, so obviously I have to rate it highly!
I read this as a child way before the 1st Little Mermaid movie by Disney came out, and boy was I surprised that the Ariel didn't dissolve into sea foam at the end 🤣
I adore this story so much that I will pick up a copy of this book no matter which continent I happen to be in….. In this Asia! Yep, while vacationing, I ran across this book at a Philippine bookstore and immidiately snatched it up. I cannot resits the call to buy copies of this book! In this case the story was just as Hans Christian Andersen had intended it to be and the magnificent illustrations by Brian Price Thomas was so beautifully, it's was just too good to pass up.
I don't remember exactly what I thought of this; I read it when I was 5. But thinking about it now, I wonder how my parents allowed me to buy it when it featured a lot of female upper body nudity. >.>
