Never meet your hero, because they’ll probably turn out to be a villain.
That thought didn’t even cross my mind when the magazine I work for assigned me to do a feature article on Dane, the greatest country singer of our generation. You know, the kind of celebrity who doesn’t require a last name because they’re that prolific.
Along with being one of my favorite artists, the notoriously private man has never given an interview in his twenty-year career, so this piece could make mine. Unfortunately, from the minute I step foot on his massive Texas compound, Dane is determined to break it.
Between his icy stares, lewd gestures, and mocking comments, the one week time table to ask him my questions comes and goes with zero answers. But for some reason, he won’t pull out of the article. And when he insists I move into his guest house in order to observe him, since he refuses to sit down one-on-one, I have no choice but to suck it up for my job.
After the year I’ve had, and the outside world I no longer want any part of, the seclusion is almost welcome. That is, if it didn’t include a sexy recluse who seems hellbent on messing with me. Working with someone I despise wouldn’t be so hard if it meant going home at the end of the day.
From his checkered past, to the rumors about his love life, to the fact that he vanished from the music scene five years ago, to the teenage daughter he’s raised as a single father her entire life … there is so much to unpack in order to learn the truth about the man buried beneath the ink covering his skin.
But the real danger comes when Dane drops the curtain completely, allowing me to see every side of him. Because it makes me want to show him every damaged part of myself.
Except two such opposite, but equally broken, people can never find a happily ever after. Especially since a villain has no heart. So what do I do when the fallen hero I can’t have wants to give me his?
Author of romance novels such as Fleeting and Love at First Fight, Carrie Aarons writes books that are just as swoon-worthy as they are sarcastic. Her stories are fueled by vanilla lattes, meloncholy music, and copious amounts of candles.
When she isn't writing, Carrie is busy binging reality TV, having a love/hate relationship with cardio, and trying not to burn dinner. She lives in farm country with her husband, two children and ninety-pound rescue pup.
I adored Say You Love Me Again, and when it comes to character follow ups I always am nervous when my expectations are high. But heck if this didn’t meet me in the sky and blow those expectations out of the water.
📔 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼: Makes The Heart Grow Fouler by Carrie Aaron’s
📚𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Rockstar romance, grumpy/sunshine, enemies-to-lovers, single father, broken man, age gap.
📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: In trying to give a charity he cares about some publicity, country star Dane gives his first interview in nearly 20 years. But he’s greeted at the door by Margot, a young journalist who wants to dig deep into his past and write a story that matters. The two are immediately at odds, until their dislike morphs into unlikely passion.
🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: Guys, if you love a beautifully broken man, let me introduce you to Dane Rivers. He’s been hurt so bad and so many times he’s built himself a compound in Texas, and he absolutely never lets anyone in. Until Margot. And I freaking love the fated vibes of this story.
When I read and reviewed Say You Love Me Again last week, I had no clue this book was coming out so soon. The mysterious Dan getting his own book? Sign me up. So I pounced on the ARC and to be honest, I’m so glad I did.
Dane was such a fiery character to read. Margot was equally as multi-faceted, giving off journalist vibes but also nailing the sassy, independent woman Dan needed in her life. The story was complimented by the pursuit for their interview, and how it gave a great backdrop for Margot to thaw Dane’s icy exterior.
The book hit all the best tropes - giving us single dad with a great teenage daughter, age gap that felt natural and not forced, and all of the trappings that come with a gorgeously written rockstar romance. It’s 5 stars from me, dawg.
𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 4.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 3.5/5 🌶🌶🌶
𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀: I mentioned it in the review, but Say You Love Me Again by Carrie Aarons is a related standalone, with similar rockstar vibes and is second-chance perfection. If you want angst with your rockstar romance, I always recommend the Bittersweet Symphony Duet by Kate Stewart.
After I finished Say You Love Me Again & Carrie announced that Dane would be getting his own book, my anticipation for this book skyrocketed.
Dane is about as grumpy as rockstars come but the love and compassion for his daughter was astounding. And that love kept him grounded enough to realize what he felt towards Margot was real. He's also very isolated and keeps to himself due to his very rough history.
Margot is the journalist that's sent to obtain the only interview Dane has ever allowed. It's also her first job after being out on extended leave.
Dane & Margot have the perfect dynamics but it’s not as easy as that. Dane holds everything close to his chest and Margot refuses to compromise her job just because of attraction. But he's promised this interview or has to pay up.
I absolutely loved how this story played out. Carrie's words brought this story to life & i could picture every scene so vividly. Dane's childhood home, refurbished - probably one of my favorite scenes and I could see that whole concept crystal clear on my head.
I've always been a huge fan & reader of Carrie's. This book just proves how much she's grown in her writing and style.
Definitely grab this book and you'll be devouring it in hours.
Well well, where should I start with this book? First of all I must say I had a love/dislike relationship with it. I felt the first 45% of this story was very confusing and rushed, the way they kinda went from not being able to stand each other to instantly being completely in love like I didn’t feel it happen, I didn’t see how or when that changed, that parted happened way to fast and maybe also the writing got a bit confusing for me but around the second half of the book it got way better for me, I started to enjoy not only the writing but the plot itself a whole lot more, I loved Dane’s relationship with his daughter and the way he acted around Margot’s mom, it was really nice to see. Also Margot and Shiloh’s relationship was absolutely beautiful. I also think all the matter’s approached here were well intended and the premise of the story overall was really good but the epilogue was lacking something, at least for me.
All in all it was an enjoyable story to read with great storyline and for that I give it 4 ⭐️
When Margot is sent to the home of Dane, a huge country star, she is still healing from an accident that she barely survived and losing her father at the same time. Dane has been a recluse for years, shielding his daughter from the outside world. Margot has been a fan of Dane since childhood but hopes she can write the article and leave unscathed! Dane is anything but polite and doesn't answer questions. Struggling to get the article written she ends up moving into the compound so she can observe and find her words that way. The more time she spends with Dane, the more she gets feelings and between them a friendship of sorts is born. When they catch feelings, will they translate into the real world? Will their little bubble burst or will it continue to grow? This was another brilliant Carrie story with characters full of flaws looking for their HEA. Margot is healing from a traumatic time and Dane is helping her through. At the same time, Dane is growing and leaving his shattered past behind thanks to Margot.
This book absolutely freaking destroyed me. In the best possible way. If you are looking for a book to gut you emotionally..look no more! Makes The Heart Grow Fouler by Carrie Aarons is an epic enemies to lovers, grumpy-sunshine, single dad rockstar romance that delivers raw feels in every page. Dane and Margot are not perfect at all. Both have demons in their closet, scars on their heart and emotional baggage. This is the story of their healing and falling in love.
After one year of break, when Margot arrived to take an exclusive interview of the super elusive country music legend Dane, she expected some kind of resistance. But she didn't expect the downright hostility. Dane doesn’t do interview or parties or award ceremonies. His property is his personal space and only his daughter Shiloh and his best friend aka manager Brady are allowed. But he agreed to do this interview for a charity close to his heart. Margot is getting under his skin like no one else has and then Brady invites her to stay in the pool house. Is it beginning of something big?
Me and my love for broken brooding musicians..a dangerous combination and a sure way to make me go obsessed with a story. Dane is everything my romance loving heart wants. A past full of tragedy, regrets and mistakes has turned him into this closed off recluse. To the world, he is c0cky and volatile and angry and off limits. He was completely toxic and hurtful and total ahole to Margot at the beginning. But our girl is tough and bada&&. She is still recovering from the massive grief and physical scars and she has been fighting her own emotional battle. So she recognizes the pain behind Dane's vitriol. The more she spends time with the cold hearted grumpy music God, the more Dane opens up to her and shows his bloody pieces. They had an instant electric chemistry from the first day..they knew it will be a disaster but it was irresistible and inevitable. The slow burn was phenomenal. The enemies-to-lovers tension was beautifully mixed with red hot passion and messy feels. It was definitely heartbreak after heartbreak. Dane cannot trust or open up easily and it took all of Margot's unconditional love and empathy to melt the ice around his big heart. And these men..when they go down for a woman, they go hard. I am equally crazy for the sad Dane, the possessive Dane, the messy Dane, the sweet Dane and the musician Dane. His love for his daughter is ovaries exploding kind of material. Margot and Dane got their broken pieces together through their love and my heart is overflowing with so much emotion!
This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Carrie Aarons!
Makes the Heart Grow Fouler is a standalone Romance about Margot and Dane.
Makes the Heart Grow Fouler is a standalone, but it’s set in the same world as Carrie Aarons’ other book Say You Love MeAgain. After reading Say You Love Me Again, I wanted to know more about Dane, he was such a mysterious and interesting man. When Carrie Aarons announced that she was going to publish a book about Dane, I got so excited! And let me tell you, Carrie Aarons did such an amazing job with this book. I truly loved the story and the characters, and it was hard to stop reading. This book was really addictive and I had to know how the story was going to end.
Makes the Heart Grow Fouler is a Romance book with a few tropes: rock star, grumpy/sunshine, single father, age gap, … The perfect mix for a good Romance book if you ask me… The story is about Margot and Dane. Margot is a journalist and Dane is a rock star who has never done an interview before. Some lines are crossed and they both don’t know what to do with that… Ugh, I loved both characters. I’m a sucker for broken characters who mend each other’s hearts. Margot and Dane are perfect for each other and I loved reading about their situationship becoming a relationship!
Carrie Aarons wrote another amazing Romance book, and to be honest, I didn’t expect anything else. She’s such a talented author and I love how she combines different tropes and writes amazing and interesting stories. I also love that she isn’t afraid to write about difficult topics such as postpartum depression, loss of a parent, addiction, … Makes the Heart Grow Fouler was such a good Romance read, and I highly recommend it if you love a good Rock Star Romance with a grumpy, older guy!
This one was such a thrill to read. From start to finish I was immersed into it and I couldn't put it down. Dane and Margot have more in common than they care to see or admit. While she's come to do her job, he is determined to make it difficult. But the more time they spend being unproductive, thanks to Dane, slowly feeling starts to emerge. And pretty soon nothing can stop in the way of the sizzling chemistry. But the past is not so easily forgotten, and when Dane crosses a line, she's not willing to overlook it. But as they spend time apart, they start to see that nothing can be worse than letting go of the loved one without a fight.
The last book in the series nearly broke me, but this one is just the icing on the cake. It was heartbreaking and beautifully written story about two people who were floating around just waiting for the ONE to come find them.

Makes the Heart Grow Fouler rocked my world and then some! A perfect country star romance with a rich, hot, closed off man and this cute, sweet, heart of a gold lady who wins his heart.
Dane and Margot, one strange pair. He was this cold, barely talkative country star who knew what he wanted, who after years of having a tough childhood and later after years of living through negative side effects of fame and fortune, has had enough. He stopped caring of what others tought and he distanced himself from it all.
Insert Margot, this sweet, loyal, caring, persistent journalist who came to his house to interview him. He was so cold to her, awful even, but she took it gracefully and in the end managed to brake down his walls.
In summary, this was a superb read and one I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. It's a wonderful read and one that had me hooked throughout.
I was so excited when Carrie Aarons revealed that Dane was going to be her next hero, because I was intrigued after meeting him in Say You Love Me Again. Then I started reading MTHGF, and I gotta admit… I hated him those first few chapters! He was such a jerk! But as he fell for Margot, I fell for Dane and loved getting to know the vulnerable man underneath that grouchy exterior.
I really don't want to say much about this book, because I think the blurb itself speaks volumes. It was unexpected in so many ways, and I loved the journey that Margot and Dane go on from the first page to the last.
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
Let’s start with the great cover, this fits this book so well. I was curious to know more about Dane after his brief introduction in “Say You Love Me Again”. Getting to peel back his layers, from grump, to recluse, to father, and breaking down his walls. Margot has been sent to interview him after he agrees for a fundraising opportunity. She is running into delay tactics and feels there is much more to Dane’s story. Then there is the attraction. She has secrets as well.
As they warm up to each other, will they let each other in?
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
Y’all when I say I love broody, jerk heroes DANE IS IT!! Ahhh I loved him so much even when he was being a total jerk face. Their chemistry is fire and passion. I loved everything about them. They both had such tough pasts, but they made the best of it in different ways. Also, I love love love the fact that Dane is a country singer. I love country and that aesthetic has me swooning. The spice has to be my favorite so far from Carrie aarons. IT WAS HOT AND SPICY!!
I have been super intrigued by Dane ever since he popped up in Say You Love Me Again and was not disappointed in the slightest. This was full of angst, great spice, and wonderful romance. I loved that Dane always put Shiloh first and did everything he could to protect her. The tension and chemistry were so, so good. *I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
You guys know Carrie Aarons is on the list of my favourite authors. No book has disappointed me, and Makes the Heart Grow Fouler definitely won't join that list either. First off: When I got the chance to read an ARC, the cover wasn't available yet. Now that it is, I have to say they did a brilliant job.
Margot and Dane are such wonderful characters. Dane seems to be this cocky and private rockstar to the world, but he has been through so much, which has shaped him. He has built himself a compound in Texas, not wanting anyone to know who he really is. He decides to give an interview to give a charity he loves some publicity, so Margot, a journalist, steps into his life. As a reader, you soon realise they are immediately at odds and have demons in their closet. Other books of the author have also dealt with heavier topics (CW: death of a parent, child abuse and neglect, mentions of homelessness, car accident and drunk driving [...]). Aarons does it in a way that won't overwhelm you and still pays enough attention to the issue at hand. This is mainly why these two protagonists are so great - the detail in their writing. Both are equally multifaceted characters. Dane's fiery nature and Margot's sassiness and general being, as well as their stories, make you sympathise with them.
This book serves so many fan-beloved tropes: rockstar romance, grumpy/sunshine, enemies-to-lovers, single father, and age gap. I was a little scared with the latter, as I had my fair share of stories that butchered it. In MtHGF, it felt natural and not forced. Aarons has a way of writing certain things and tropes that is simply brilliant and will always make me enjoy her books. A 5/5 star read.
[I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review.]
Dane and Margot were PERFECTION! I love an enemies to lovers that makes the characters work for it and this one hits the mark ten-fold. Dane has closed his life away from the world, focusing on raising his daughter and making music on his own terms. He's never been one for interviews, but his daughter and a cause he deeply supports puts him in the situation where he finally agrees to giving one. His deeply troubled past made him the man he is today - but what's hidden beneath the surface is nothing short of beautiful.
Margot has experienced her own tragedy. But she's back to work and ready to use her skills to get the reclusive Dane to open up to her. His music has often been her saving grace and once she steps foot inside his home, she questions her abilities to give the magazine, and the world, on what they were looking for. Through Dane, she not only discovers that there is a lot more to the reclusive man than what he shows the world, but also, she finds a bit of herself.
Shiloh is a bright spot for these two, opening the door for each to look beyond the dark times of their life and focus on a future - possibly one together.
There are so many moments that had me in tears at what these two had gone through and every tear was so worth the ending! Absolutely one of the best from Carrie Aarons!
So, I don’t read a lot of musician romances, and when we first introduced to Dane. Man, I really didn’t like him ☹ He just plain annoyed me. But once you start reading the story about his past you kind of understand why he is the way he is. I love that with everyone he is an obnoxious grump but with his daughter and his friend Brady he is a totally different person.
Margot came back to work after a year break to do an exclusive interview with a famous country music legend, Dane Rivers. She knew he would resistant after all, but he was downright hostile towards her. And he doesn’t like anyone in his personal space, except for his best friend and his daughter, but for some reason he agreed to the interview. So why is she struggling to get anything out of him. How is she going to get him to talk to her and maybe save her career…
Like I said wanted to smash him over the head a few times, but in the end, I fell in love with the character. Watching him fall under Margot’s spell was a treat. Loved the angst and the drama in this one. From the start you just knew that his story wasn’t a good one and Margot sharing her story with him was what eventually brought down the walls. Loved the story, loved the characters 😊
Makes the Heart Grow Fouler by Carrie Aarons is a standalone, however, Dane, the main male character, was introduced in Say You Love Me Again. You do not need to read it to read this one, but I loved it and highly recommend it. Dane is known as the best county singer in the country and is beloved by all. He is very protective of his privacy and of those he loves. It is not easy for him to let anyone in. His life has not been an easy one, even with all his success. He was grumpy, protective, and fiercely loyal. Margot is grieving, lost and on the verge of the most important story of her career. She is set to interview one of her heroes, but the man she meets is anything but.
The last thing Dane wants to do is give an interview to anyone, but especially not to the woman who he is drawn to as never before. He thinks she is too young, naïve, and not at all right for a man with past. She sees a man who is hurting and haunted. But the more time they spend together, the more they are drawn to each other. But can he trust her enough to give her his heart and hold it safe? Can she trust his heart to truly let her in? This was an emotional and touching age-gap romance.
We meet Dane in her previous book, and it is obvious that he is a big, reclusive country star. What we don’t see are all of his scars-both internal and external- and his demons. He has a lot of them, and he wears them almost with pride. He uses them to keep others away from him, and locks himself away from the world, with the exception of his daughter, who he loves beyond reason and a best friend who he trusts more than anyone else in the world.
Into this world enters Margot, a woman who also has scars. As you can imagine for a man who is both private and damaged, he does not take well to Margot. There is a time where I wasn’t sure she would stick it out, but I had to admire her strength and tenacity.
As these two lovers of words tangle together, a bond is formed and secrets are revealed. The journey is emotional and painful at times. Written with care and love, this book made me see that everyone has pain and heartache in their lives, but it is how it is overcome that makes us who we are. Dane and Margot battle it out, but in the end, it is a sweet story of love and overcoming.
Margot is going to interview the famous Dane who hasn’t had an interview in twenty years. Dane is a very grumpy and rude gorgeous man. He gives Margot the runaround. His manager Brady invites her to stay in guesthouse for two months because Dane needs to do interview. The animosity and attraction between Margot Dane is intense. Dane’s daughter Shiloh and Margot get along and it annoys him. He starts to open up to Margot and she starts to see a different side of him. They keep fighting their attraction until one night. Can two people who are broken and so different be together? Great characters and storyline Highly recommended Amazing book. I absolutely love Dane and Margot character development the supporting characters are excellent. As usual with Carrie you get all the feels
I completely fell in love with the characters on this book. This author does an amazing job at giving us character who we can connect with and who we absolutely love and some even hate. This is an incredible story and one I loved from beginning to end. I went along the journey with both Margot as she goes back to work and goes on the journey of her first assignment back which is a huge one. Then we also get to go through the journey with Dane as he is pushed out of his comfort zone which he has worked very hard to keep. This is a book you won’t want o miss and one that will have you so enthralled in the story and I the characters. Highly recommend
Dane Rivers is so well known as one of the great singers that he is only known as Dane but very few people know much about him because it is well known that he doesn’t like reporters. But he signed a contract for an interview to raise money for the Full Hands charity for post-partum depression. Dane agrees to give Margot Hallow an interview but it will be on his terms.
Margot won’t tell Dane that his music saved her after the accident but there is something about him that makes both of them take notice.
Loved this grumpy/sunshine age gap romance. Dane is a sexy country star nobody knows my h about until Margot is sent to interview him and tell his story. These two are complete opposites, but I love the way Margot gets Dane to open up and you get the see a whole other side to him. Both of these characters have gone through so much in their lives, it's nice to see them not have to do it alone anymore.
I wanted Dane's story when I first saw a glimpse of him in "Say You Love Me Again" and he lived up to my expectations and more of him. He's rugged, damaged, alpha, and a singer, my reader heart swooned for him. Add in Margot and close proximity and all the swooning and falling in love, I loved it! This book was a weekend read for me. A page turner that I enjoyed and I am looking forward to more from this author.
Oh this grumpy single dad musician didn't stand a chance when he met his match with the beautiful journalist. Dane and Margot couldn't be more opposite but they were so much fun to read. I love how Margot got Dane out of his shell so to speak and the way her relationship was building with his daughter. Dane was busy protecting his and his daughters heart that he almost missed out on the best thing that's happened to him and I loved reading how he lowered his guard. These two had me swooning with their emotional sweet story.
I knew this book would be amazing. Dane had me intrigued from the previous book. I couldn’t wait to get his story. Margot was the woman to bring him to his knees though he didn’t go down without a fight. This book was brilliantly written and I couldn’t get enough
I give up. I stopped this book because it was boring, tried again but still boring. They both annoyed me and it was too insta love for me. I loved the first book, what happened? Is this the same guy we met in book 1? Wanted a better heroine too. 🤷🏽♀️ Good luck for the next book author.
