Story follows the journey of a mouse on his way to find dinner through the dark dark streets. This story is good because it has a lot of repetition so children can start to recognise words such as dark, path, town, street, gate, yard, house, stairs, room and door. Suitable for EYFS. The illustrations are also nice and children could re create them using charcoal/ pastels.

A great little book, the story follows a mouse as he travels from a street to a house at night time. The book uses large illustrations which display and highlight how scary the night time can be, especially for young children. The final page finds the mouse discovering a piece of cheese after all of the built up drama of running through the dark. The ending is perhaps a surprise as the mouse finds a reward for continuing to brave the darkness.

The book can be used to highlight the use and introduction of adjectives, commas and ellipsis as they are used frequently and repetitively throughout.

This story may help young children to overcome their fear of the dark as they can use this story as motivation. I picked up this book from my year 1 placement class and would certainly recommend it for this age group and even for a nursery and reception class.
