"Shahāb ad-Dīn" Yahya ibn Habash Suhrawardī (Persian: شهاب‌ الدین سهروردی‎‎, also known as Sohrevardi) was a Persian philosopher and founder of the Iranian school of Illuminationism, an important school in Islamic philosophy and mysticism that drew upon Zoroastrian and Platonic ideas.
He is referred to by the honorific title "Shaikh al-ʿIshraq" (Master of Illumination) and "Shaikh al-Maqtul" (the Murdered Master) in reference to his execution for heresy.

Mindblowing. Great read for spiritual revival and use of logic to shed light on the concept of the soul as a part of Divine light. 10/10 recommend for those going through existential crises.

No words can I describe this book. The Epilogue especially, described the ultimate reality of self.

This is a great book that will require a re-read a bit down the road to take it all in - but the Epilogue alone was worth it the first time around!

Promising text marred by scholarly bias and dubious execution

While a new translation of Suhrawardi’s work is always a potentially welcome addition to the field of Islamic studies, this particular effort was, unfortunately, a profound disappointment.

The most immediate issue is the editors' persistent and anachronistic characterization of Suhrawardi as "Azerbaijani." Suhrawardi was born in the village that bears his name, located in the Zanjan province of modern-day Iran. He lived and died in the 12th century, a time when the modern nation-state of Azerbaijan did not even exist, not to mention Zanjan has never been part of it or even a neighboring province.

This historical revisionism is as shocking as it is insulting to the reader's intelligence and raises a fundamental question: if the editorial team is willing to so flagrantly distort a basic biographical fact for the sake of a contemporary political agenda, how can a reader trust the accuracy and integrity of the translation itself? This overbearing Turkic lens casts a long shadow of doubt over the entire scholarly endeavor.

Regrettably, this lack of trust proves to be well-founded. The final product does not come through as a vibrant introduction to one of Islamic mysticism's most profound and innovative thinkers, but rather one of the driest and most sterile pieces on the subject I have ever encountered. The translation reads as lifeless, entirely stripped of the philosophical daring that is supposed to define Suhrawardi’s original "Philosophy of Illumination", leaving the reader with a hollow shell where a rich intellectual tradition should stand.

In the end, this translation serves as a cautionary tale. It demonstrates how an ideological agenda can poison a scholarly project from the outset, and how a failure of style can ultimately be a failure of substance.

A little too neo-Platonist for my taste even as I find the metaphysics of light to be compelling… I suppose I prefer the Sufi texts that read like poetry more than philosophy…
