Children of divorced parents are sometimes confused or troubled when one parent decides to remarry. This book offers them reassurance. The sensitively written Let's Talk About It Books encourage preschool-age and early-grades children to explore their feelings, and speak openly to a parent or other trusted adult about things that trouble them. Each title discusses a particular concern or anxiety that children often encounter in the course of growing up. All books in this series have appealing color illustrations on every page, and are available in both English and Spanish language editions. A short section at the back of each book offers advice to parents.
As the book begins you can tell the little girl loves her daddy. She is confused on her feelings and dreams one day that her mom and dad can be friends again. One day, she meets her daddys new friend and realizes that even though she wanted to out about it at first, his friend wasn't going anywhere. She has mixed emotions when she finds out that they are going to get married. She is sad that her "dream" that her mom and dad will never be married again but happy with his new friend. In the end, she sees that they all can be happy and even her mom is happy with her dads new friend.
I think preschool and early school aged kids can relate well to this book. The pictures help tell the story. I think children of divorced and remarriages often struggle for words and ways to express their feelings.
I can relate personally to this book because my parents were divorced when I was too young to remember but can vividly recall when they both told me they were going to get married to someone new. Tables turned more than 20 years and I have two wonderful step children who I can relate so well and wish I would have had this book to let them (especially his daughter) know that I wasn't going to take their daddy away and their feelings were validated.
