Getting Control of Your Anger

Rate this book
A nationally recognized Cornell psychologist presents his clinically proven program to help you break the generational intergenerational cycle of anger for good

"Getting Control of Your Anger" helps adults who have "inherited" destructive anger patterns learn constructive ways to express themselves and get their needs met. Focusing on breaking the cycle of anger, Dr. Allan helps you discover the reasons for your anger, find more constructive ways to get your core needs met, and break the cycle by avoiding passing destructive patterns along to your children.

Already successfully taught to over 10,000 people, Dr. Allan's 3-step program gets to the source of anger: Step One identifies the "hooks"--good reasons to get angry--and how to avoid them. Step Two identifies the "need" that is causing the anger. Step Three teaches you how to fill the need.

This book suggests that it would be wise to create a "hook book" as a way to understand what causes your anger, so that you can prevent yourself from becoming angry in the first place. The author does not condemn anger, because it's a natural emotion that everyone experiences; instead, he teaches you how to avoid the "hooks" that cause you to release your anger in a productive way. Overall, I think the book is an eye-opener for people who are beginners, like me, in managing their anger. However, if you are looking for some fresh, new ideas on how to express your anger in a more productive way; then, this book misses the mark.

A great start I believe for me, I found the anecdotes super relatable to a certain degree (I’m not married) but the actual steps on how to control your anger still seems a bit lacking

This book taught me to look out for ‘hooks’ and to focus on fulfilling my needs. Changed the way I approach all my relationships at home, work, and with friends. There’s a lot of fluff to read over but at the end there’s a really good summary and supplemental reading.

This book was a pretty decent book. It was filled with many everyday life situations that can lead to completely normal anger. It also had many steps and situations to find the root of your anger and put a stop to it. Only downside of it was that if a person had control over themselves, they would be able to figure out how to put anger in its place on their own; not have to read a book about it.
